If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

"Numerical modelling is becoming universal in rock engineering practice. Most applications focus on the prediction of failure loads of 2D problems, where the numerical models are useful extensions to analytical methods and experience-based design criteria. For 3D problems and problems where the assessment of serviceability indicators – displacements, ground-structure response, etc. – are of importance, the selection of the constitutive models themselves and the implications of the selection of material parameters may have a very heavy impact on the reliability of the model outcome and its predictive capability.This paper overviews basic common aspects of constitutive equations used in practical rock engineering and summarizes some challenges that are frequently observed when reviewing numerical models performed for routine problems in rock engineering. INTRODUCTIONNumerical methodsFrom a philosophical perspective models, either analytical or numerical, are idealizations of a perceived reality. For us engineers, models are just tools we use to guide our judgement and understanding of the problem in hand. When dealing with problems in rock engineering, we resort to a wide range of techniques:1. Closed form solutions like confinement-convergence methods for circular tunnels: these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements at the cost of a crude simplification of the material behavior and geometry;2. Limit analysis methods, like bearing capacity formulas: lower bound methods satisfy equilibrium but sacrifice compatibility, and upper bound methods do the opposite. Material behavior must be simple, geometry admits limited freedom;3. Limit equilibrium methods, like method of slices for slope stability: they satisfy restricted forms of equilibrium, do not satisfy compatibility requirements, require simple material behavior but have a much greater flexibility on geometry;4. Numerical methods, where a mesh is employed to discretize the problem geometry: when properly formulated, these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements and give reasonable approximations to the behavior of very complex geometries and construction sequences. Very little restrictions remain on geometry and material behavior, but the cost of calibrating the material parameters can be very high."

Proper selection of large walking draglines, based on sound engineering principles and field experience, has not kept pace with the large capital expenditures needed to buy these stripping machines. The use of large walking draglines for stripping overburden in US surface coal mines grows steadily, but equipment selection continues to pose problems. An improper size, model, make, or spoil reach selected for a particular stripping application results in additional, unnecessary coal production costs. Large walking draglines are being used to dig deeper tar sands at the Syncrude operations near Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta, Canada. This application is compared with typical deep digging operations and dragline use prevalent at typical US strip mines.

There are seven basic comminution circuits that can be used to prepare beneficiation feed from the product of a primary crusher. This paper gives a comparison of these circuits based on average process and economical data. The paper is principally devoted to a discussion of the test work required to obtain the process data needed to evaluate each circuit. The results of the test work in conjunction with geographic and economic factors can be used to narrow down the choice of possible circuits to one, two, or three before making a detailed engineering study.

The goal of this work was to select an appropriate electrode for dummy load of diesel engine in fully salt-water in the DESA factory. The electrochemical corrosion rate of general structural steel, commercial pure aluminum and cathode copper calculated as weighting, volumetric and commercial in fully salt-water by city power. After several tests and then applying the fuzzy logic method, it was determined that general structural steel is the best selection for this purpose.

Metallurgists operating Knelson Concentrators (KC) often rely on manufacturerÆs recommendations for selecting operating parameters, such as fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. Recent studies have shown that these parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics, such as size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. It is known that a particle entering a KC initially traverses a circular path within the bowl. For a particle to maintain a given orbit, the required centripetal force must be supplied by external means. It has been argued that this centripetal force, which is dependent on the mass of the particle, its radial position and the rotational speed of the bowl, is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the BagnoldÆs force created by the particle/particle collisions. Depending on the fluidising water flow rate, one of two situations can occur where the porosity of the bed increases or decreases, which influences the amount of material retained within the bowl. The amount of material of a given size and density retained in the bowl is thus dependent on the extent of the centripetal force provided. Based on the above concept, a criterion that can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It may also be construed that this criterion demarcates the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state. By identifying the transition values for the different constituent mineral particles in the feed, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. In addition, the kinetics of gangue displacement by incoming heavy mineral particles were also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build-up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum. A model has been proposed to predict the optimal batch cycle time for a KC in terms of the feed characteristics and machine operating parameters.

An optimum method for selecting exploratory drilling locations has been developed. The process has been modelled as a highly non-linear programming problem subject to constraints. Solution involves an iterative algorithm which converges rapidly and procedures have been developed to distinguish between local and global optima. The algorithm has been implemented as an interactive computer program which allows the user to influence directly the solution process and to evaluate the effect of any manual adjustments to the optimal solution.

During operations, mining and metallurgical processes may generate effluents such as tailings water, acid mine drainage (AMD) and seepage and process acid streams. Depending on the type of ore and the metallurgical process, these effluents may contain one or more toxic compounds (eg acidity or alkalinity, cyanide, ammonia and/or nitrate, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate) in elevated concentrations requiring treatment before their discharge to the environment or recycle/reuse in the process. Natural oxidation of sulfide minerals present in mining wastes (eg tailings and waste rock) at mining sites may generate AMD, which is characterised as a low pH, high acidity effluent containing heavy metals and sulfate. If generation of AMD cannot be controlled and/or prevented, AMD needs to be collected and treated for neutralisation of acidity and reduction of metals and TSS to meet regulated water quality standards. It is important to note that some of these compounds may persist in run-off from mine sites, even after the mine and processing facilities are decommissioned. Treatment of mining and metallurgical process effluents can be accomplished by means of various physical, chemical and/or biological methods. The mode of process application may vary from the use of either specifically designed, controlled and automated facilities or passive systems. Lime neutralisation and precipitation is the most common method used in the mining industry to treat AMD. To reduce the problems associated with disposal and long-term storage of the resulting sludge, the use of a high-density sludge process (HDS) has become a preferred option. The use of other chemical reagents, waste or by-products from other industries, and biological sulfate reduction methods can also be considered as viable options for site-specific situations. Recently, several passive treatment systems have been designed and successfully operated, even in the cold North American climate. This paper will discuss available options and provide insights for selecting a suitable method for a given situation using case studies from projects conducted by Golder Associates around the world over the last decade.

"Adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code, regulatory requirements and community concerns have increased the need to implement suitable cyanide destruction processes at gold operations to meet ever more stringent discharge limits. As standards set for the allowable concentrations of cyanide, cyanide compounds and other contaminants may vary from country to country, jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and even from site to site, there is no “one size fits all” technological solution. Currently the most common cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and Caro’s acid. Regardless of the process used, cyanide destruction plants must be reliable and achieve permit guidelines at all times. The selection of the most appropriate cyanide destruction process for an operation depends on several factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Only after considering all these factors together can the most effective approach be selected to achieve the permit guidelines economically and technically feasible. Finally performing the correct test work program is the most important step to ensure that the correct process design criteria can be determined to accurately calculate capital and operating costs.IntroductionThe adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code in 2005, stricter regulatory requirements and community concerns prompted by environmental incidents involving cyanide have increased the need to implement cyanide destruction processes at gold and silver operations.Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values are comprised of both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution, with the exception of cobalt complexes. Total cyanide levels in solutions are in most cases higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically, in Canada CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions."

"The operators of mineral processing plants collect daily samples from strategic process streams with a view to prepare production balances to assess plant performances. The rules to minimize the risk of systematic sampling errors are known and applied in many mineral processing plants. The mass of the sample to be collected is calculated to yield a target measurement reproducibility considering the fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous material. This paper demonstrates that this practice is partly valid if one does not account for the time variation of the ore composition during the day. The concept is demonstrated using samples collected on a 30 minute basis from different streams of a gold ore concentrator. Results show that depending of the natural variability of the stream characteristics the mass of the daily samples may not be the critical variable to obtain reproducible measurements. On the other hand the number of cuts taken during the day could impact on the variance of the measurements obtained from daily samples.IntroductionMineral processing plants may treat several thousand tons of ore every day to produce concentrate or impure gold ingots. The operation and performances of these plants are monitored on a daily basis through the collection of ore samples from various streams of the processing circuit. The samples are prepared and assayed to obtain the concentrations of target elements that are subsequently used to calculate the mass flowrates in the streams of the circuit and ultimately the distribution of the target metals for the estimation of the plant performances (Morrison, 2009; Lachance and Leroux, 2016).The acquisition of representative and reproducible samples is therefore the first step in the characterization of plant performances. The term representative sample is used here to indicate an unbiased sample, i.e. a sampling procedure that does not introduce a systematic error. Rules for the collection of unbiased samples are reviewed in the literature by different authors (e.g. Morrison, 2009) and are not discussed in this paper. The term reproducible indicates the dispersion of the measurements around the average value of a characteristic of a stream meets an acceptable level of variance. The reproducibility of a measurement process (sampling and analysis) is assessed by the relative standard deviation or coefficient of variation of the measurement that is a function of the sampling and assaying errors (Morrison. 2009; Gy, 1979). Usually the focus is put on the fundamental error of sampling whose variance can be controlled by the choice of the primary sample mass or adequate particle size reduction during the preparation of secondary or tertiary samples extracted for the chemical analysis. When a sample is taken from a stream that exhibits a time varying characteristic, the obtained measurement exhibits a variability that is not only a function of the sample mass but also of the natural variability of the ore in the sampled stream. This paper examines this aspect of the sampling of a time varying process on the reproducibility of composite samples for a day of production."

"Careful review of site conditions and constraints is essential to select the appropriate shoring system for each project. Key evaluation criteria include the geotechnical profile, groundwater and environmental conditions, adjacent buildings and utilities, schedule and any project specific access or other constraints. Typical earth retention schemes range from rock or soil nail walls, through conventional anchored pile and lagging walls to deep internally braced cut-off systems. The Owner’s design team will often develop the conceptual approach under their design studies, and this is refined with Contractor input through Design-Build or Design-Bid-Build procurement. In downtown San Francisco, underground construction must accommodate a unique combination of variable fill, soil, rock and groundwater conditions, potential for severe seismic loadings, and constrained sites within a dense urban environment. The quarter square mile of San Francisco’s Transbay and Rincon Hill districts has seen repeated cycles of development, destruction and re-building through earthquakes and the economy, and has been intensely redeveloped over the last decade. Over 50 acres of this land has been reclaimed from the Bay since the Gold Rush and within 3 city blocks the bedrock slopes from over 250 FT depth below the fills up to outcrops over 100 FT above sea level. A series of project examples from within this small area illustrate how varied shoring systems have accommodated the highly variable subsurface conditions while offering best value in terms of cost, schedule and appropriate protection of adjacent facilities.INTRODUCTIONA walk of 3 blocks from Rincon Hill on San Francisco’s Harrison Street, north through the Transbay area to Mission Street will traverse an urban zone which has been reinvented twice within its 150 year history in response to major seismic events. This small area highlights the range of subsurface conditions and urban environments which are encountered and accommodated in shoring schemes throughout the city. This route down the north side of Rincon Hill overlies a steep bedrock slope, outcropping over 100 FT above sea level at its south end and dropping to over 250 FT below sea level at Mission Street. A complex overburden soil profile, shaped by seismic activity and changing sea-levels has created layered soils ranging from soft estuary muds, dense sandy strata and deep clay layers, in turn topped with urban fill, frequently contaminated with debris from the Great 1906 earthquake. This route runs parallel to, and 350 yards inland of, the San Francisco shoreline resulting in groundwater elevation close to sea level with almost limitless recharge within granular layers. On the higher slopes of Rincon Hill, groundwater is typically observed flowing on top of and periodically within the fractured bedrock formation. The Transbay and Rincon areas were developed early in the Gold Rush era of San Francisco. After destruction in the 1906 earthquake and fire, they became a transit gateway into the city throughout the 20th Century. Demolition of the Embarcadero Freeway in response to earthquake damage and social pressure has opened this large area to redevelopment within the last 20 years, creating a new commercial and residential hub for the city. In its latest wave of building, planners are developing taller structures with deeper basements, in turn creating new construction challenges. Selection of shoring systems appropriate for these developments requires detailed evaluation. The process must address both the rapid spatial changes in subsurface conditions and the constraints surrounding, and specific to, each site in order to define shoring performance requirements. This paper presents an overview of the subsurface conditions and land use development of the Transbay and Rincon Hill areas, with examples of the shoring systems selected to meet site-specific conditions and requirements. A sulfate reducing bacteria strain (named SRB-A) is isolated from sanitary wastewater by using anaerobic technology of Hungate. The studies of physiological, biochemical and phylogenic of the isolated strain are carried out. The colonies of the strain are circle. Cells that are slightly curve, rod-shaped with the size of 1.0~3.0µm in length and 0.8~1.0µm in width. The optimum temperature for growth of the organism is 30~35°C. The optimum pH for growth is 7.0~7.2. Strain SRB-A can use sodium lactate, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, ethanol and acetone as electronic acceptor but can not use glycerol, glucose, sucrose and sodium oxatate. The isolated strain reduces sulfate, sulfide, sulfur, DSMO and FeCl3, then nitrate and nitrite can not be used. The strain has higher tolerance of NaCl, and the optimum growth occurs in the presence of 5%~8% (w/v) NaCl. The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicates that the isolated strain SRB-A is the most similar to Desulfo-vibrio halophilus, and the level of the similarity was 98.4%. The isolated strain has a stronger ability to reduce sulfate, and the level of sulfate reduction reaches about 90% at pH 7 in the liquid medium. 0.6 to 0.8 is the optimum COD/SO42- in the medium for the isolated strain to show better ability to reduce sulfate. At pH 2.5 the level of removal of Cu2+ reaches 96.3%. Under the condition of pH 3.5, the level of removal of Zn2+ reaches 92.6%. When the value of pH reaches about 7, the Fe3+ is precipitated by the formation of Fe(OH)3, and Fe3+ is removed up to 89.4% at last.

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising?s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

In Japan, geological condition do not only vary in a wide range of strata but are also extremely complex with the existence of faults and aquifers. With respect to rocks, in particular, it is very rare that homogeneous rocks are distributed uniformly. In general, geological conditions are distributed in a wide variety, ranging from earth, sand, soft and medium rocks to hard rocks. Under these geological conditions, when planning of the tunnel construction is to be made out, either blasting method or tunnel boring machines must be selected taking into consideration the geological structures along with the designed tunnel route,' possibility of encountering aquifers, hardness of rocks anticipated and also, the adjacent environ- mental conditions. In the process of select- ing an excavation method,, it is important to make a comparative investigation between the above two methods considering the advantages and disadvantages with regard to the respective operating efficiency, economical efficiency and the conditions and scope of application as well. Furthermore, in addition to these considerations, the recent environmental restriction, which does not allow the blasting in the surroundings of residential areas, must also be taken into account. Because of this, in some cases there is no alternative but to use a static excavation method or a tunneling machine even when these are less efficient than blasting.

The progressive rise of an H-pile during driving of an adjacent pile is described in this case history in which piles 15 to 18 m long were driven to end-bearing for the foundations for a 230 m long building. The use of a reaction beam-soil anchor system for compression load tests is discussed. The results of static load tests to determine pile capacity are compared with those obtained by the Pile Driving Analyzer and by theory. Unusual high temporary compressions were observed by field control staff. Proof testing was necessary to determine the need for restriking of some piles in which rise had occurred.

H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. As a matter of fact, when Carpco first began investigating the possibilities of upgrading specular hematite, the first thought was in terms of magnetic separation; and the second thought was in terms of gravimetric separation.
