The purpose of my presentation is threefold: a) to make you aware of what is available in Canada in terms of refractory minerals. b) indicate the mineral deposits that have potential for development. c) show the advantages of Canada as a supplier of electrical energy necessary for the production of electrofused minerals. Canada is a producer of natural refractory minerals, electrofused minerals, and synthetic refractory minerals. Several deposits also have good potential for development. The natural refractory minerals produced in Canada are shown in Table 1. The major minerals by decreasing order of importance in terms of tonnage and values are: dolomite, graphite and magnesite.

São apresentados e discutidos os aspectos teóricos e práticos relativos às principais propriedades físicas, térmicas e mecânicas de três refratários comerciais de MgO Al2O3 C e Al2O3 MgO C para a zona de metal de panelas de aço. Normalmente, o desgaste do revestimento dessa região é governado pela propagação de trincas, penetração de aço e sucessivo destacamento das camadas superficiais deterioradas. A deformação irreversível na direção circunferencial do revestimento também tem despertado interesse. Os resultados da caracterização laboratorial mostraram que o projeto microestrutural exerceu influência significativa nas propriedades desses refratários. Os principais fatores que concorreram para modificar o desempenho dos tijolos foram a pureza das matérias-primas, a quantidade de antioxidantes metálicos e o comportamento dimensional dos refratários. Os tijolos denominados MAC2 (MgO Al2O3 C) e AMC (Al2O3-MgO-C) apresentaram melhor compromisso entre a variação linear dimensional, resistência ao creep e resistência à propagação de trincas, exibindo, assim, maior potencial para suportar as variáveis de processos e práticas metalúrgicas vigentes na Usiminas.

Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

1 Triton Square was originally a six-storey building with a one-level basement located within a commercial development near Euston, London. It was designed and constructed in the 1990s and the foundation scheme comprised straight shafted London Clay piles arranged singly beneath columns. The scheme added three storeys and a five-storey infill in the central atrium area to increase the building floorplate by 70% and maintained the usability of the basement space. As the loads to support the additional floorplate area were greater than the capacity of the existing foundations, an optimised strengthening scheme of small diameter piles installed within the existing basement and a slender retro-fitted raft was installed to augment the existing piles. The re-use and strengthening of almost all of the existing foundations enabled re-use of a very high proportion of the superstructure and in approximately 35,000 tonnes of concrete and 1,900 tonnes of reinforcement and structural steelwork being re-used. The structural embodied carbon for the refurbished building scheme is estimated at an average of 136 kgCO2e/m2, achieving a Structural Carbon Rating Scheme (SCORS) “A” rating with components detailed in the paper.

INTRODUCTION An efficient refuse-disposal system is a necessary part of the modem cleaning plant. The large-scale refuse system and disposal area, engineered for the lifetime of the plant, has become more important due to the greater tonnages of refuse produced from increased quantities of mechanically mined and prepared coal. Laws and increased government regulations have affected the design and operation of disposal systems. THE EFFECT OF MINE AND PLANT OPERATION Refuse disposal starts at the mining face. The mining system, the type of roof support, the machinery used, and the degree of discipline at the face contribute to the amount and type of refuse that must be removed through the disposal system. Economies gained through modification of the mining system or mining machinery may be partially offset by increased dilution of the mined coal with impurities from associated rock formations. In some cases the change in the mining system and equipment has reduced the dilution. The thickening and dewatering characteristics of refuse slurries are as variable as the coal mining operations and preparation plants that create them. This paper discusses these characteristics based on field studies at a number of mine sites. The connection between bench and full scale performance is confirmed with the design, construction and operation of an integrated 18m (60 ft) diameter thickener and 2.5 meter belt filter press system in Western Kentucky. "The Regal Silver mine is 5 miles north-northwest of Albert canyon; a station on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway; 21 miles east of Revelstoke; British Columbia.Development, commenced in 1918, comprises more than 8,000 feet of workings from six adits, one of which extends into the Regal Silver property from the adjacent Snowflake ground. Production has been limited to a little tungsten concentrate recovered recently from a few r..undred tons of ore treated in a small underground mill. The property has received some attention as a possible source of tin. The deposits are large quartz veins containing irregular sulphide bodies. Ore minerals normally make up less than 1 per cent of the veins and include pyrite, galena, sphalerite, scheelite, and stannite. The veins are approximately parallel with the bedding of the enclosing graphitic, siliceous to calcareous, slates and argillites. These strata are of Precambrian age, strike about northwest, and dip northeast. No other rocks are known in the vicinity of the workings . Granitic rocks, intrusive into t'he sediments, outcrop 4 miles to the southwest and 7 miles to the northeast and may underlie the property at no great depth."

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

"Base metals and precious metals can be recovered from a nickel matte or nickel concentrate using the Outotec nickel chloride leaching process. The raw material is leached with hydrochloric acid and the metals are recovered by solvent extraction, where ammonia is used to control the pH. Ammonium chloride is regenerated to ammonia and the side product of this step is calcium chloride solution. The regeneration utilizes either calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide. The calcium chloride solution is used to convert sulfuric acid into a hydrochloric acid solution while producing pure gypsum as a side product. The regeneration and reuse of ammonia and hydrochloric acid in this process will have a positive impact, from the point of view of both operating costs and environmental sustainability. This paper concentrates on the test work and technical concept development performed by Outotec to implement and develop chemical regeneration and recycling into a vital part of the nickel chloride leaching process.INTRODUCTION According to a nickel market analysis, the nickel market is expected to grow in the future. Main driver for this growth is the increase in stainless steel consumption as the living standards are equalizing globally. The expected increase in the amount of electrical cars and the need for nickel in the batteries of electrical cars also gives potential for the increased need for nickel in near future. At the moment the use of nickel in nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) Li-ion batteries is in the range of 14 ktpa. It is estimated to increase to the level of 90 ktpa by 2025. In every era of the nickel industry, Outotec has been constantly developing new processes to create environmentally sustainable and economically viable processing routes. The Outotec® Nickel Matte Chloride Leaching process is a great example of a process that is flexible regarding raw material and could also treat nickel raw materials that are difficult for smelters. Outotec’s main options for pyrometallurgical nickel treatment include the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting process (DON) and the Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process. The DON process is operated in Boliden Harjavalta Nickel Smelter in Finland. Ausmelt process is in use for example in Daye nonferrous plant in China. In the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting Process, a sulphide nickel concentrate is processed in an Outotec Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF). Producing concentrates and processing them by Outotec Direct Nickel Flash Smelting to matte followed by hydrometallurgical refining offers a reliable route from concentrate to product. In the DON process, high-grade matte with low Fe content is produced in the FSF and the valuable metals in the slag are recovered in an electric furnace (EF). The Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process can use a large variety of raw materials (concentrates, secondary material and scrap metal) as feed. Fuel and oxygen are injected into the furnace through TSL (Top Submerged Lance) and this enables efficient smelting. Both Flash Smelting and TSL plants produce nickel mattes, which can be refined with Outotec hydrometallurgical processes."

Catalisador monolítico comercial de níquel foi selecionado com o objetivo de se determinar o regime cinético da reação de oxidação parcial do metano (OPM). As estruturas cristalinas deste catalisador foram identificadas por DRX. A composição química superficial e o estado químico dos elementos presentes na superfície da amostra foram determinados por EDX. A técnica de microscopia (MEV) com emissão de campo foi utilizada neste trabalho com as finalidades de análise morfológica do catalisador antes de sua utilização nas reações de oxidação parcial. Análises de TG-DTA foram realizadas com o objetivo de se estudar o comportamento térmico do catalisador. A área superficial e a área metálica foram determinadas por BET e Quimissorção, respectivamente. A temperatura de redução do catalisador foi determinada através de TPR. Foi utilizada uma unidade experimental para realização de testes catalíticos. Antes das reações, os catalisadores pulverizados na faixa granulométrica < 0,150 mm foram submetidos a uma etapa de redução para ativar os sítios de níquel metálico. As análises dos produtos de saída do reator e das cargas reagentes foram realizadas por cromatografia gasosa, utilizando-se um Cromatógrafo VARIAN CP3800. Foi determinado o regime cinético na OPM utilizando as massas de catalisador 65, 80 e 95 mg.

"Most of the recent renewed interest in manganese nodule mining has been focused in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the NE tropical Pacific where nodules are rich in Mn, Ni and Cu. However, equally interesting, but compositionally different, nodules occur in the tropical central South Pacific (CSP). The CC Zone deposits lie in the International Seabed Area whereas those in the South Pacific lie mainly in the Exclusive Economic Zones of Island States, principally the Cook Islands and Kiribati. The CSP nodules should not be regarded as an alternative resource to CCZ nodules, as they are enriched in different elements. Rather, the CCZ nodules should be thought of as a source of one group of metals (Mn, Ni and Cu) and the CSP nodules the source of another group (see below), mutually complementing each other and to be mined in parallel for their different metals.Manganese nodule mining in the South Pacific has been mooted since the 1970s. However, new data on manganese nodule composition and abundance there have recently appeared. Also, a recently developed interest in 'rare', 'green' and 'technology' elements has necessitated a re-examination of old South Pacific nodule data for information on these elements (previously thought to be economically unimportant), and the re-analysis of the deposits to obtain new data on them. Additionally, current and possibly future applications to the UN to extend island 'continental shelf' areas necessitates an appraisal of the manganese nodules in these areas. These developments have prompted recent work that has helped to refine our understanding of the distribution and abundance of metals of traditional interest in South Pacific nodules, namely Mn, Co, Ni and Cu, but has also drawn attention to other elements of possible economic interest including titanium (Ti), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE)."

Significant changes in ownership and production of industrial clays have occurred since 2000. Clays covered in this presentation are kaolins, ball clays, smectites, (bentonite), and palygorskite (attapulgite)-sepiolite. IMERYS discontinued production of paper coating kaolins at their Cornwall operations and have expanded their kaolin production in Brazil. J. M. Huber sold their kaolin operation in Georgia to KaMin whose headquarters are in Ft. Worth, Texas. BASF purchased Engelhard?s kaolin and attapulgite operations in Georgia. ActiveMinerals purchased Southeastern Kaolin in South Carolina, Wilkinson County Kaolin in Gordon, Georgia, and Zemex Attapulgite in Quincy, Florida. Chemical Lime purchased Spinks Ball Clay Company in Paris, Tennessee. Most of the ball clays used in Italy and Eastern Europe comes from expanded operations in the Ukraine. Bentonite operations have expanded production in Wyoming and Montana because of strong demand for drilling mud, foundries, cat litter, and iron ore pelletizing. The production and exports of palygorskite in China continues to increase. Nanoclays utilizing sodium montmorillonite, palygorskite, and halloysite are actively being developed.

"Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir&apos;T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called &quot;geology&quot; has been indicated in&apos; reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David&apos;s map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia&apos;s mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). Three-way analysis of covariance with repeated measures (frequency, backrest, and workload) with a fully crossed design was used to evaluate the differences in the oxygenation and blood volume responses (measured in optical density [od] units). Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on final land use plans. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mines. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The Grampian Highlands and English Lake District evolved as part of the American and European continental plates, respectively, and were separated by the Iapetus Ocean until they were tectonically juxtaposed during the late stages of the Caledonian orogeny. The similarity in the controls of the distribution of gold pathfinder elements and gold mineralisation in the two regions thus provides important information for understanding the genesis of gold deposits in comparable tectonic settings elsewhere. The data presented are inconsistent with models that invoke a juvenile source of gold or its pathfinder elements. Instead, they support a model whereby gold and its pathfinders were initially concentrated in volcano-sedimentary sequences in rapidly subsiding, tectonically controlled basins and in associated volcanic rocks. Remobilisation and mineralisation occurred subsequently, probably as a result of an increase in oxygen fugacity associated with the influx of granite magmas into the crust and the establishment of hydrothermal convective circulation systems

The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au. Estimated reserves for the Rezende area are 20 t Au and for Manica district 4 t lode Au and 19 t placer Au

Originally developed for use in mineral exploration, regional geochemical mapping based on stream (and lake) sediment sampling is showing broader application in other areas of the earth sciences and in environmental science. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the role of regional geochemical mapping in relation to geological and environmental studies. This is achieved using a descriptive equation for the chemical composition of a stream-sediment sample and then relating it to the use of successive approximations in geochemical and environmental investigations. The procedure is further qualified with reference to time and process in the formation of regional geochemical patterns. Examples are included of studies based on stream sediments related to bedrock geology, surficial geology, ecology and man&apos;s effect on the geochemistry of the environment. The range of applications of regional geochemical mapping in earth and environmental studies is outlined and some conclusions drawn regarding the future development of geochemical mapping under Canadian conditions.
