In 2009, the Queensland Government developed a series of amendments to environmental authorities (EAs) for mines throughout the Fitzroy Basin in response to studies that assessed the cumulative impacts of mine water discharges in the basin. One of the key amendments was the requirement for all mines in the Fitzroy Basin to develop and implement a receiving environment monitoring program (REMP). The intent of the REMPs was to provide baseline information on the condition of the receiving environments of the mines and any impacts resulting from release of mine-affected water. Since this time, the requirement to complete a REMP has been incorporated into new or revised EAs for mines (including metalliferous mines) in other regions, as well as for other industries that discharge to natural watercourses (such as coal seam gas). This paper discusses the approaches that can be used to incorporate biological monitoring and direct toxicity assessments into REMPs. It highlights the importance of collecting biological data using sound experimental design principles to investigate whether releases resulted in environmental harm; and the use of monitoring data, coupled with direct toxicity assessments, for setting more realistic, site-specific trigger values and release limits (compared to the default guidelines such as Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC), which may not be appropriate to the region). INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

"Coarse ore sorting is here defined as the physical separation of a mixture of coarse (+3/8 inch) ore particles into two or more separate groups of total value greater than that of the unsorted ore. An ore will probably be sortable if the geology of the orebody and the mining practices employed meet conditions outlined in this paper.The paper points out how sorting can substantially reduce tonnage variable operating costs because sorting can double the mill head grade of amenable ores by rejecting waste rock from the mine output. The effect of sorting on ore reserves is outlined. It is also suggested that sorting is a low cost alternative to conventional expansion.The mode of operation of the Ore Sorters Kadel 13 Photometric and MK VI A Radiometric sorters is detailed. The report concludes with detailed descriptions of the photometric sorting plant operated by the Doornfontein Gold Mining Company is South Africa and the Radiometric Sorting Plant presently under construction at the Schwartzwalder mine of Cotter Corporation in Colorado."

This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

Aeromagnetic compensation plays an important role in most airborne geophysical exploration programs, dealing with the modelling and elimination of interference effects generated by the aircraft flying in the Earth’s magnetic field. This work discusses broadly recent developments on adaptive compensation (which allows continuous optimization of the solution through a recursive algorithm), real-time compensation of on-board electronic systems (whose effects are not captured by the conventional model), attitude-reference sensors, compensation of UAV platforms, and various modelling issues.

Some developments in copper, lead and zinc extractive metallurgy which have gone in to production or seem to be close to production scale are described with emphasis on why these innovations have been adopted.Mineral processing operations are now using: automated quantitative mineralogy,high capacity fine crushing equipment, ò fine grinding equipment, andcolumn cell flotation.Extractive metallurgy plants are using:ò bath smelting of concentrate at various scales, and ò flash converting of copper.Hydrometallurgical process developments are slower to make a commercial impact. Concerns about ability to handle impurities in the feed and production of saleable by-products are often major hurdles.An expression for the probability of implementing the first example of a new development is presented.

As part of the Federal effort to help maintain an adequate supply of fertilizer minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to characterize complex, low-grade western phosphate rock and to develop methods for economic recovery of phosphate. The rock varies from soft, friable, altered phosphatic shale to hard, tightly cemented, unaltered phosphate rock. To supplement current beneficiation by sizing, a flotation procedure was devised that included depression of phosphate minerals with H2SiF6 and anionic flotation of carbonate minerals, followed immediately by cationic flotation of silicate minerals. Application of the procedure to several different ores resulted in phosphate concentrates that ranged from 28 to 31 pct P20S in grade and from 60 to 70 pct in phosphate recovery.

"Abstract: How to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has become a vexing problem, meanwhile, there exist high energy consumption and low efficiency problems in the existing CO2 capture and storage technologies. For CO2 comprehensive Utilization, this paper researches a new technology of absorbing the CO2 emission with high alkaline calcium or high alkaline wastewater sludge mineralization of calcium and invent a core device for multi-level jet carbonation. The industrial test has been carried out in China Xinyu slag Engineering Co., Ltd. The wastewater flow is 150m3/h in the pilot scale. The prepared calcium carbonate has a whiteness greater than 90%, particle size less than 150nm. The mineralization of aluminum exhaust with waste carbide indicates that the CO2 absorption rate is greater than 99.0%, CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas is lower than 0.08%, the purity of mineralized calcium carbonate is greater than 99.0% and particle size is less than 100 nm.InstructionAccording to the statistic data from IEA (2009), the carbon dioxide discharge from fossil fuel consumption in China has exceeded it in the US by the year of 2007, China, has become the largest emitter of carbon dioxide all over the world. Meanwhile, the economic scale is still on an increasing trend in the next 50-100 years, leading to a continuous increment in carbon dioxide discharge. According to the international energy agency forecasts, the energy-relative CO2 discharge in China will rise to 11,615 million tons, 91.3% higher than it in 2007. In the year of 2012, the CO2 gross discharge has reached 10,000 million tons, obviously higher than the predicted value. It is a tremendous task to reduce the emission. Non-ferrous metals industry is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide among the industrial circle, the whole industry might discharge a huge amount of carbon dioxide (over 600 million tons), in which the electrolytic aluminum industry is the largest energy consuming industry and CO2 emitter. At present, the CO2 discharge has focused by the whole world due to the environmental problems it causes; meanwhile, supplement of new carbon source is needed due to the exhausting oil and coal resources, so that various countries in the world are attaching importance of the recycle and purification of CO2. Many countries are studying on the cyclic utilization of carbon dioxide. Gas CO2 is mainly applied in chemical, pharmaceutical raw materials, beverage filling agent, refrigerant, inert medium, solvents, pressure source, the welding protective gas, antioxidant and fire extinguishing agent, etc. Solid CO2 is mainly applied in penicillin production, fish, cream, ice cream and other food storage and transportation at low temperature, etc. nowadays, such methods as absorption method, membrane separation, adsorption, etc. are widely used to recycle CO2, with such problems as high investment cost and technical constraints etc."

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Drillability of rocks by mechanical means is closely related to the physical properties of the respective rocks, Various approaches by previous investigators on rock drillability are presented, as well as recent techniques studied by the Bureau of Mines. The studies show drillability concepts based on (1) theoretical drilling equations derived from laboratory drilling experiments extended to field drilling results and on (2) a statistical method where multiple regression analysis is used to develop a prediction equation for drillability.

PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

Recent and on-going studies on the leaching of gold, the properties and activity of carbon, developments in the elution of gold from carbon, and methods of recovering gold from solution are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

Over the last 10 years the diameter of unbraced, unlined and unanchored circular shafts has grown dramatically in many parts of the world. This progress has taken place through improvements in: construction methods; concrete rheology; and design capabilities. Excavation equipment has become more precise in terms of operator control and ability to correct alignment of digging elements leading to better alignment tolerances. Also contributing to the increases in shaft diameters is the evolution of design models. A better understanding of soil structure interaction is being incorporated into the analyses in terms of radial soil stresses and imposed loads on the shaft. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress made in circular shaft construction, the primary design considerations, and some innovative uses of efficient arc elements to develop unsupported structures of other shapes. In addition, a summary of recent circular shafts constructed worldwide is provided.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Geological concepts are employed routinely in porphyry copper exploration at the area selection, prospect appraisal and deposit definition stages. Regional, district-scale, deposit-scale and laboratory-based concepts can all play a role, with the resulting porphyry copper models providing templates for the integration of geochemical and geophysical responses and interpretations. Of the 19 concepts and parameters selected for brief discussion, those relating to subdivision of porphyry intrusions, understanding of diverse and commonly complex alteration-mineralisation patterns and lithocap characterisation are undoubtedly the most influential in exploration. Several of them are of particular importance because of their role in promoting grade development. Additional belt-, district- and deposit-scale features are currently little used but hold promise, whereas others have less practical value but help in underpinning the evolving porphyry copper genetic model.CITATION:Sillitoe, R H, 2015. The concept of installing a steel sheet pile retaining wall into the ground by "pressing" has resulted in the development of various equipment solutions over the last thirty years e.g. Taylor Woodrow ?Pile Master', Giken 'Silent Piler" & Tosa 'Still Worker?. Dawson Construction Plant Ltd (DCP), have recently advanced the pile pressing concept with the introduction of their 'Push-Pull' system. This advancement offers significant improvements in the quality of installation compared with traditional pressing solutions but also greater versatility, higher productivity and, most importantly, generates new opportunities through a wider range of applications for "silent piling'. This paper will focus primarily on the use of the Push-Pull concept in the construction of a unique "integral" bridge in Milton Keynes, England. Finally, the paper touches on the development of quiet, vibration-less pile extraction equipment, which allows steel to be considered the foundation material of choice for truly sustainable construction. It is no longer acceptable to leave unwanted piles in the ground.

Different variations of soil nailing techniques have been used in the United States since the late 1970's. Such techniques owe their origins to French developments, which began in the early 1970's as a spin-off from European tunneling excavation support practice. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation and environmental protection have created an active and expanding soil nailing market demand for earth retention and slope stabilization in the United States since its early developmental years. There is a clear need for a fundamental review of the large number of soil nailing techniques that are currently being used in the United States. Following a brief summary tracing the historical development of soil nailing and a generic classification of applications, this paper provides a review of the different recent advances in the design and construction of soil nailed systems. Discussion topics include nail design advances, permanent "top-down", structure support/underpinning, alternative face stability measures, composite systems, hollow bar and fiberglass nails and architectural reinforced concrete/shotcrete facings. Case histories will be presented to illustrate each of these advances.
