A Special General Meeting, followed by the February General Meeting of the Institute, was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on 18th February, 1970, at 4.30 p.m. Mr J. K. E. SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING The President: "You will have received notices of the Special General Meeting and I declare it duly constituted. In keeping with the trend of overseas and local institutes, your Council recommends that we should change our membership classification as indicated in the notes of the meeting. The new grades are proposed to replace those presently in the Constitution and By-Laws. In terms of Clause 4.8 of the Constitution a special general meeting must be held for the purpose of considering and, if approved, adopting with or without amendments, the revision of the undermentioned clauses of the Constitution, which Council now recommends should read as follows. Clause 2.2 'Corporate Members shall comprise the grades of Honorary Life Fellow, Fellow and Member', these being the equivalent of Honorary Life Member, Member and Associate Member. Clause 2.6. 'Non-Corporate Member shall comprise the grade of Honorary Fellow, Graduate, Associate and Student.' Are there any questions in regard to this proposal? If not would someone propose that these clauses be amended and adopted?" Proposer: Mr A. J. Nixon. Seconder: Prof D. D. Howat. The motion was then adopted. The President: "It is recommended that Clause 2.15 should read, 'A Corporate of the Member of the Institute shall be entitled to use the following authorised letters designating the grade of Membership in Honorary Life Fellow and Fellow, F.S.A.I.M.M. and Member, M.S.A.I.M.M.' Previously we used the letters M.S.A.Inst.M.M. and your Council considered that we should adopt the simpler lettering. Could I ask someone to propose that this amendment be adopted?" Proposer: Mr R. Special General Meeting A Special General Meeting to consider the changes to the Constitution was held immediately prior to the AGM. 1. Purpose In order for the SAIMM to remain relevant and ensure maximum value to all members, Council propose three changes to the Constitution. 2. Background Three changes to the Constitution were proposed by the Council on 21 July 2006. These changes now have to be approved by means of a ballot at a Special General Meeting. These three proposed changes are discussed briefly below:

INTERNATIONAL conferences on safety in mines originated in 1912 when, in response to an invitation issued by the United States, representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, and Germany participated in a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pa The record shows that a permanent organization was proposed to be developed through. diplomatic channels. However, the advent of war 2 years later prevented this proposal from coming to fruition. No further cooperation between the Bureau of Mines and a group having: similar interests in a foreign country took place until 1924, when formal cooperation with the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain was established. Interchange of personnel and results of research under that arrangement have resulted in a number of publications in both countries and more rapid advance in knowledge than could have been obtained through the same efforts exerted independently.

Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso aurífero con polvo y zinc desarrollado en la mina Algamarca a través de cuatro procedimientos: Precipitación con polvo de zinc o MEC (Merrill Crowe), carbón en Pulpa o CIP, carbón en Columna o CIC, y la lixiviación en Rumas o LIR. La finalidad de su aplicabilidad es determinar cuál es método más adecuado para la extracción del oro dentro del marco técnico-económico. En ese sentido, la evaluación se dio entre el período de 1989 y 1990, donde se operó con el proceso denominado Carbón en Lixiviación o CIL y se aplicó los métodos MEC y CIP. De acuerdo a esto, los procesos últimos se ajustan a las características propias de los minerales existentes en el yacimiento. Sin embargo, es conveniente utilizar el proceso LIR en los minerales de la veta Leona y donde no hay acceso para el transporte del mineral en camiones hasta la planta de lixiviación. Asimismo, la elección del proceso a emplear en una planta de lixiviación debe resultar de una adecuada evaluación de todos los factores que influyen en los resultados de la operación.

En Antamina se ha realizado un estudio para predecir el tratamiento del mineral (TPH) en planta en función de resultados geoquímicos calibrados con datos operacionales. En un estudio realizado con 381 muestras metalúrgicas de conminución constituidas por Axb (SMC test) y BWi (Bond Ball mil Work Index) y a su vez que tienen análisis de 27 variables geoquímicas se han construido modelos de machine learning para predecir los parámetros Axb y BWi en 313,262 registros que corresponden a todos los compósitos de taladros que cubren depósito de Antamina.

El presente texto señala el proceso «Strategic-Udy Modificado Angeles» utilizado para la producción de fierro o semiacero en Chimbote, Ancash. En ese sentido, durante la producción de aceros, es opcional el uso de fierros secundarios en la fundición (Scrap). La gran flexibilidad que ofrece el proceso permite producir tan bajo tonelaje sin sacrificar el costo de producción por tonelada de metal. Asimismo, las reparaciones pueden hacerse con gran facilidad, quitando la alimentación, drenando el horno eléctrico y cortando la corriente. Se puede operar el tonelaje deseado en una planta ya instalada con un pequeño descenso en la eficiencia. Por ello, es el método más adecuado en los lugares donde no se dispone de coke, tal es el caso de Chimbote - Perú y en donde se dispone de energía eléctrica barata, y de carbones que requieren procesos caros para su coquificación.

La lixiviación es un proceso hidrometalúrgico que permite obtener el cobre de los minerales que lo contienen, aplicando una disolución de ácido sulfúrico, agua y agentes oxidantes. Este proceso consiste en que los minerales son sensibles al ataque de soluciones ácidas y oxidantes. En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto fue determinar la respuesta de los sulfuros secundarios de cobre a la lixiviación ácida y oxidante utilizando cloruro de sodio como portador de cloruro al sistema de lixiviación. El desarrollo de las pruebas y la ejecución de las mismas, definiió el proceso de lixiviación para minerales sulfurados de Minera Pampa de Cobre.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso implementado por la minera Yanacocha para el tratamiento de las aguas de exceso a través de la Tecnología de Membranas (EMS- Engineered Membranes System) o proceso de Osmosis Inversa, conocida también por las siglas en inglés de RO (Reverse Osmosis). El proceso RO tiene por objetivo tratar la solución barren proveniente de la planta de Merrill-Crowe para reducir el contenido de cianuro, así como los metales disueltos y otras sustancias como nitratos y nitritos en la solución.También, busca clarificar el agua tratada para cumplir con las exigencias que establece el Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM) y el Banco Mundial (IFC) en cuanto a límites de descarga permisibles. Una vez alcanzados los niveles establecidos, y con la aprobación del área interna de Control de Calidad, el agua tratada se descarga al medio ambiente.

El Proceso SUTOM efectiviza la precipitación y flotación selectiva del Hg contenido en soluciones cianuradas, generando reducidos volúmenes de espumas con altas concentraciones de Hg, que representan aproximadamente el 5% del volumen de tratamiento, que son fácilmente filtrables con filtros de prensa convencional. La aplicación del proceso es técnica y económicamente factible, logrando extracciones superiores al 98% del Hg, preservando intactos los contenidos de Au y Ag presentes en la solución, obteniendo un precipitado con una ley superior al 39% de Hg
