Ontario leads Canada in production of structural materials and ranks third in production of non-metallic minerals. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1997 was $1.6 billion. The province is the leading producer of nepheline syenite, salt, talc, clay products, cement, lime, sand and gravel, stone and a major producer of gypsum and silica. Barite, sulphur in smelter gas, elemental sulphur, tremolite, serpentine, gemstones and peat are also produced. Table 1 shows recent actual industrial mineral production levels in Ontario. Other industrial minerals, including phosphate, petalite, diamonds, wollastonite, vermiculite, kyanite, garnet, graphite, silica, kaolin, dimension stone and anorthosite, have been the target of exploration and development projects. Investment opportunities exist at all levels from grass-root prospect through to production level.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.INTRODUCTIONGeorgius Agricola (1494-1555) was not the first writer on the subjects of mining and metallurgy, but is well known as the author of De Re Metallica (‘of things metallic’ or ‘on the nature of metals’), a book that documents and illustrates the observations he made in the course of his extensive travels in the 1500s. Agricola wrote extensively about mining methods and metallurgical processes that were in place in the Middle Ages. The original Latin version of De Re Metallica was published in 1556, the year after Agricola died. It was translated into English by Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer and later President of the United States, and his wife Lou Henry Hoover, a geologist and classicist. The English version of De Re Metallica was published in 1912."

Insurers are hesitant to provide coverage for Open cast Pit side wall collapse, and even the consequent damage to plant and equipment in the pit as well as the resulting interference with the mining operations. After a general introduction to relevant principles of insurance, this paper addresses some of the major reasons for that reluctance based upon the authors? extensive claims experience, examines what limited coverage can still be obtained and looks to the future possibilities. Confidentiality of sources and examples referred to in this presentation is a natural imperative so that a bibliography is not provided but reference is made to relevant sample insurance policy wordings.

Innovative marine bulkhead design and construction techniques were used in the fast-track design and construction of a high-capacity, deep-water dock in the highly seismic region of Alaska?s Aleutian Islands. The geotechnical investigation and design through construction phases were completed in just eight months. The adaptable OPEN CELL® design, readily available standard flat sheet pile and an experienced contractor were integral to the successful completion of the project. The cost of the structure was determined to be approximately 50 percent of a comparable pile-supported platform dock structure, allowed higher load capacity, rapid construction, less maintenance, and provided substantially more uplands. This paper details the design and construction of this unique and challenging project. The OPEN CELL structure is a vertical flexible membrane system that offers significant advantages over other structure types: ? Its flexible membrane structure is not dependent on toe embedment for stability. ? Poor soil conditions, shallow bedrock, high seismic loads, deep water, scour, etc., can be accommodated due to its adaptable design. ? It has a very high load capacity?capable of several thousand pounds per square foot. ? Allows buried utilities which results in lower cost and reduces freezing conditions ? The sheet pile tail walls can be extended to provide increased global stability if needed. ? Standard sheet pile and connectors with traditional installation techniques allow accelerated construction schedules.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans European railway corridors. These tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. The excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffi c tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. With the great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstifi ed rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. This lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. With the present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. The research and development efforts presently underway with the intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

Slope stability in open pit mines is governed by rock structure, rock quality, ground water conditions, blasting, pit geometry and excavation method. Of these factors, the control of ground water pressures often represents the primary tool to improve slope stability. Production equipment has recently been used to stabilize two slide areas by dewatering using blasthole drills for vertical holes and secondary drills for horizontal holes. This paper describes both of these dewatering programs and contrasts an earlier slope stabilization program that employed a subcontracted horizontal drill.

Craigmont Mines Limited mine 50,000 tons of ore and waste per day from the open pit at Merritt, British Columbia. An electric-powered "down-the-hole" drill, a diesel-powered rotary drill and two electric-powered rotary drills have been used. All primary drilling, as a result of cost and operating experience, is now performed with two electric-powered rotary drills. Trials with various loading techniques have increased the amount of AN-FO and decreased the amount of commercially prepared slurries used for primary blasting. Approximately 95 per cent of the primary blasting is accomplished with AN -FO, mixed at the hole. Introduction THE Craigmont mine is located near the village of Merritt, B.C., 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. The concentrator has been in production since September of 1961. Craigmont is a combined open-pit and underground operation. To date, slightly more than 95 per cent of the mill feed has been mined from the open pit. As underground development proceeds, the ore requirements from the open pit will decrease. The average milling rate from September, 1961, to April, 1964, was approximately 4,900 tons per day.

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories. Tonnage Requirements, Ore and Waste Loading, transporting, and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Generally, the greater the tonnage requirements, the larger the equipment size selected. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tons (total) per month, medium size for three mil- lion tons, and small size for one million tons or less.

Several new methods have been developed on the Iron Range to remove the material adhering to truck bodies in freezing weather. A machine known as a Gradall, incorporating the features of digging both above and below the horizontal, digging angle of blade control, full revolving, travel almost anywhere, and operated by one man, has proven successful in trials at body cleaning. Several of these units are in use with great saving in box-cleaning costs and improvements in efficiency of the truck operation with full capacity boxes. In addition to their winter use, the same machines have been used for ditching and excavating in the summer with great saving. The latest method of combating this freezing problem is to carry the exhaust from the engine through the body, making use of the tremendous heat that is now being wasted. To do this, the present wood sandwich which is used between the bottom of the box and the wear plate is removed and replaced with angles or channels run lengthwise of the box and spaced to permit gases to flow between or through them and also provide a good sup- port for the wear plate. The channels or angles are cut a little short on each end to form a cross passage that permits the gases to flow through the area. In the front end, openings are made in the wear plate and connect to a manifold created by welding a plate across the whole front of the box, spaced from the original end by the original vertical reinforcing angles at that point. The body being described is for a Euclid truck which is the only truck that has been adapted to this body-heating idea to date. At the rear of the truck, the holes from the cross passage are made in the bottom plate of the body and lead into a triangular-shaped body cross member under the scoop end of the truck.

The evolution of surface mine layout configuration is a function of the schedules and sequence of material excavation within the optimized layouts. The production schedules and sequence of materials movement from multi-bench and multi-face operations are difficult to plan and execute. However, the ability to maximize the profit or net present value of an orebody is largely dependent on the mining schedule. The mining schedule will determine the life of the mine, the projected cashflows, and the investment requirements over the mine life. The pit geometries, pit expansion rates and the periodic volume of materials from different benches in a multi-bench, multi-face open pit mine determine the equipment requirements. The volume of materials excavated, as well as pit layout changes from circular and elliptical geometries of an oil sands mine were modeled using analytical geometric and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and solved within Matlab. The results show that the geometric values are almost the same as those obtained from PDEs for different pit configurations. The economic analysis shows that both the current mining system (CMS) and the cyclic excavator conveyor belt control system (CycEx CBCS) are viable with high NPV (= $3.20 × 1010), PI (> 19%) and IRR (> 29.02%) with short discounted payback periods (= 3.24 months). The CycEx CBCS option is more economic than the CMS option. Its NPV is 1.27 times that of the CMS option. The PI and IRR for the CycEx CBCS option are respectively 2.24 and 1.13 times that of the CMS option. As well, the CycEx CBCS option has almost half the DPBP of the CMS option. The CMS option has an operating cost of $1.386 per tonne ($2.774/barrel) while that of the CycEx CBCS option is $0.779/tonne ($1.558/barrel). These results show that the CycEx CBCS option is the better option for mining companies working on oil sands deposits to invest in.

In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. This method is especially suitable for operation under severe winter conditions and has reduced the detrimental effects by a far greater extent than other methods of water control, Spring runoff is handled in open sumps, but all other water from four mines, with flows exceeding 16,000 g.p.m., is pumped all year 'round from about thirty-five wells. A common casualty of modern open pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can really be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period. And grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot. INTRODUCTION Open pit mines are large and complicated operations, which require significant initial and ongoing investment. A single mine may employ hundreds or thousands of people and creates substantial benefits for both the surrounding and global communities. Planning an operation of this magnitude requires a lot of effort and cannot be done optimally by hand. Mining engineers today rely on many techniques from operations research to guide decision making, and to maximize the value of the mine. Techniques including linear programming, metaheuristics, and network algorithms are all used to solve different problems throughout mine design and optimization. However, techniques based on Boolean satisfiability, including the optimization extension of maximum satisfiability, have not seen much use in mining despite being used in many other fields including electronics design, scheduling, and artificial intelligence. We claim that maximum satisfiability is a useful and meaningful way of expressing and solving optimization problems in mine planning. However, this technique does not come without challenges; the problem is NP-hard, and modern techniques for solving these problems can struggle with the number of variables and clauses that a typical mining problem requires. Also, some of the constraints that mining must contend with do not fit nicely into the satisfiability paradigm. Despite these challenges, we believe that maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for considering operational constraints and expressing some problems that other techniques can't easily express. Maximum satisfiability can be solved exactly, yielding the true optimal answer which metaheuristics cannot guarantee. In this paper we show the applicability of maximum satisfiability to mining by specifying three fundamental problems in open pit mine optimization. We show how these fundamental problems can be formulated and how they can be extended within the framework of maximum satisfiability. For the remainder of the paper we first give a brief background on common elements between the three problems and an introduction to satisfiability. Then we tackle the three problems; the Ultimate Pit Problem, the Block Scheduling Problem, and the Grade Control Polygon Problem. In the Ultimate Pit Problem we specifically show how to extend the problem to support a minimum mining width – a coveted result for many mining engineers. We then discuss some of the complexities and shortcomings of this framework and possible research directions.

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.
