As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

During the past three years Lurgi's Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology has been successfully applied to roasting of refractory gold ores and con- centrates. In comparison with the so-called Stationary Fluid Bed roasting systems, a considerable improvement of gold recovery, to around 95 per cent, has been demonstrated and achieved on many occasions in pilot CFB units and in commercial CFB roasting plants as well. The major reason for such improved gold recoveries is the excellent controllability of the roasting process in the CFB reactor system. Here, temperature, gas atmosphere and solids residence time are more precisely controllable at optimal values during roasting operation in order to achieve the highest possible gold recovery in the subsequent leaching process step. Further dominant benefits of CFB roasting systems are their flexibility with regard to feed material, throughput capacity, dry or slurry feed, almost unlimited oxygen enrichment, direct fuel addition and in situ capture of SO2 in the presence of limestone and dolomite. The system will accept 50 per cent turndown ratio, large variations in feed composition and particle size, as well as a variety of different fuel types. The commercial applications of CFB roasting systems for gold con- centrates have been realized so far at Fimiston, Kalgoorlie/Westem Australia and for whole ores at Cortez, Nevada/USA.

Studies of the rate of interdissolution in oxide systems in the solid state are of importance in materials processing through the powder-metallurgical route. As there is a need for following the rate of the such reactions continuously, a new method based on high temperature X-ray diffraction was developed. Mechanical mixtures of the oxides were placed in a high-temperature X-ray diffraction unit and the changes in the intensity and position of the peaks with highest intensity for both the components were followed as functions of time. A suitable theoretical model has been developed in order to interpret the experimental data and evaluate the diffusion coefficients. The method was applied in the case of the system MgO-NiO. The results obtained are compared with those obtained by another new method, based on solid-state galvanic cell technique with calcia stabilized zirconia electrolyte, developed in the Department of Theoretical Metallurgy. The advantage of the present techniques to monitor the progress of the reaction continuously make them suitable for computer control of such processes.

Research on modern hydrothermal systems provides quantitative measures of the processes of formation of hydrothermal fluids and of precipitation mechanisms from them. Studies of ancient deposits provide new information regarding volcanological processes that are related to the deposits, as well as data on their spatial and temporal compositional variations. Mew exploration guidelines result from both aspects of research. The most fundamental requirement for large metalliferous hydrothermal systems is an abundant heat supply for the upper two kilometers of the crust. This heat may come from a focused heal source (shallow-level subvolcanic intrusion), but ambient heat also may have provided enough energy for the reactions necessary to effect leaching of metals, especially where heat flow is particularly high (i.e. very large or high-temperature magmatic source, such as ultramafic environments). For most VMS systems, the majority of the metals were derived through leaching from footwall strata; in addition interstratal fluids may enter subvolcanic intrusions during episodes of magma a chamber "cracking," engendering some '?magmatic" component in the hydrothermal system. Direct contributions of metalliferous magmatic fluid also may be significant from arc-related or back-arc felsic or alkalis systems. These latter contributions may form exceptionally high - grade portions in some deposits. Subvolcanic intrusions, which are excellent indicators of high heat flow and may have been the direct driving mechanisms for some stems undergo two stages of alteration: On intrusion emplacernent. fluids may rapidly enter and react with their mesostatic portions, evident in the sills in the Middle Valley. High temperature interactions caused albitization and destruction of oxides and sulfides, releasing metals. During terminal hydrothermal stages, the metalliferous fluid collapsed into the intrusions, forming disseminated and vein sulfides.

The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

Proper calibration of portable gammaray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment is essential if they are to be used for accurate quantitative determinations of radioelement concentrations. In the case of both types of equipment, it is necessary to determine the system calibration constants (stripping factors and sensitivities). In the case of borehole logging equipment, it is further necessary to determine the system response characteristics if the data are to be computer processed to improve the accuracy and resolution of the logs. Facilities are now available near Ottawa for the complete calibration of portable gamma-ray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment, in addition to already existing facilities for calibrating airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. Limited additional facilities are also available or planned in several other areas of Canada.

"A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. Cette approche contraintes-ERF (SERF, de l’anglais strain-ERF) est appliquée à un programme d’instrumentation pour la mine Brunswick située près de Bathurst, dans le Nouveau-Brunswick. The most commonly used instrumentation for monitoring rock mass behaviour around open stopes is extensometers. The y-axis of Figure 1 represents how the changing rate of movement, measured using either displacement- or stress-type instruments, can be observed over time. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.

"Utilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Almost ten years ago, an experimental research effort was carried out in the US to investigate the magnitude and mechanism of development of the bond strength between micropiles and existing concrete. The study resulted in important conclusions on the mechanism of connection capacity development and provided specific recommendations for practical design of micropile-to-footing connections. In the last five years, the original study was complemented by an intensive experimental effort in Portugal aimed at answering many of the questions still remaining on this topic. This paper is a summary of the knowledge that is presently available on the capacity of micropile-to-existing footing connections. It presents the results and observations of model tests performed in the US and Portugal, as well as some tests from actual construction sites. The paper presents clear evidence that friction may be the most important component of connection capacity. It also presents a clear correlation between confinement and connection capacity.IntroductionUtilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. That investigation led to several publications (Gomez et al. 2005, Wilder et al. 2005, Cadden 2009) on the mechanism of development of bond strength between micropiles and concrete, which included a chart for preliminary bond value selection depending on the diameter of the hole and texture of the micropile.An intensive testing program was carried out in Portugal in the last five years. The program focused on answering questions posed by the original investigation and on finding the relationship between connection capacity and level of confinement. Both investigations, and especially the testing performed in Portugal, provided an invaluable amount of information on the mechanisms of failure of micropile-to-footing connections. This information should be the basis for development of design procedures that, until now, were not available."

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. A new copper-molybdenum flotation technology developed for a certain coppermolybdenum ore is introduced. We achieved copper-molybdenum bulk flotation in lowalkali conditions. Locked-circuit test results showed that the bulk concentrate contained 21.05% Cu and 1.10% Mo, with copper recovery of 87.37% and molybdenum recovery of 77.07%. For the copper–molybdenum separation process of the bulk concentrate, we use a new depressant, BK511, to replace the traditional sodium hydrosulfide. We achieved copper–molybdenum separation through one rougher, nine cleaner, and two scavenger processes. The results of locked-circuit tests showed that the molybdenum concentrate contained 46.19% Mo and 0.75% Cu, with molybdenum recovery of 93.80%; the copper concentrate contained 21.50% Cu and 0.069% Mo, with copper recovery of 99.92%. This new technology overcomes disadvantages of using large amounts of lime, sodium hydrosulfide, and other reagents in traditional copper–molybdenum flotation.

Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. "A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the environmental benefits of properly managing slurry waste as it is generated on site. The following projects will be used to illustrate the importance of proper onsite waste management. Project: Jet Grout Backflow Dewatering The goal was to dewater the backflow directly onsite to produce a dry, solid waste and reusable water. The backflow spoil was pumped directly to the dewatering system as it was generated. Utilizing mechanical separation equipment and flocculation polymer the waste volume was reduced by 44%. Due to the site footprint and high volumes, slurry waste removal and onsite processing were the only two feasible options. Onsite dewatering proved to be the environmentally beneficial option as it eliminated the need for slurry waste hauling and disposal. The benefits of utilizing a dewatering system are listed below: Project: Soil Mixing Spoil Recycling for Slurry Wall Construction In this application the spoils generated contain bentonite mud, cement mixture and organic ground soils. The goal of this project was to process the backflow mixture to recover reusable bentonite mud and separate the soil as a dry, stackable waste product. The treatment system replaced the traditional method of vacuum truck extraction and facility disposal. The environmental benefits of properly handling the backflow is a decrease in fresh water usage, bentonite additive reduction, and the reduction of CO2 emissions. The paper will consist of a project scope, technical equipment and process description, environmental impact reduction calculations and lessons learned for each project.

A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

Nearly 4,800 mining professionals and exhibitors occupying 580 booths attended the 2000 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, Feb. 28-March 1, in Salt Lake City, UT. The technical program included80 sessions and four specialty symposia: bulk material handling, control 2000, minor elements 2000 and plant operaters. Meeting highlights included the keynote session. Executive shared their perspectives on pivotal issues and approaches to address the challenges of the new millennium. SME has begun planning for its 2001 Annual Meeting, Feb. 26-28, in Denver, CO.
