Naturally occurring asbestos in aggregate and other mineral deposits, and the release of asbestos fibers into the ambient environment, is a public health concern. Determining the presence of asbestos in an ore body also presents a considerable sampling and analytical challenge. Improper and inaccurate identification of asbestos can result in unwarranted public and worker panic leading to significant costs to mine operators both in terms of dollars and company image. Some companies have been forced out of business simply because they had the non-asbestiform, prismatic variety of one of the six asbestos minerals. In the late 70’s, asbestos was found as a contaminate in a trap rock quarry in Rockville, Maryland. This discovery led to a massive overreaction by federal, state and local governments. In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule that regulated the common non-asbestiform mineral habits of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite as if they were asbestos. The rule was reversed after a six-year struggle. Recently, the Libby, Montana, W. R. Grace vermiculite - asbestos, as well as the California chrysotile in serpentinite, and the New Jersey Southdown quarry – asbestos events have rekindled the entire issue of naturally occurring asbestos. It is time to get this concern addressed with sound science so that real asbestos is properly identified and controlled.

The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do not think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; gut, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. "The selection of equipment for open-pit mining is an important decision which results in a considerable capital expenditure by the operator. The decision is complicated by the wide product range on the market. Certainly, equipment performance is an important criterion to consider in making the decision. Equally important, however, is the operating inter-relationship among the equipment. A poor balance increases production costs and waiting time as queues form at the bottlenecks. This inter-relationship is dependent on equipment performance, but it is also affected by management decisions (i.e. scheduling techniques).The purpose of this paper is to show how the computer is used to decide which equipment and operating decisions achieve the required production objectives at least cost. Actual mining of the pit is simulated over a period of time using different equipment and scheduling decisions. Production, waiting time and costs are evaluated for each alternative until the operator is satisfied that he has achieved the best result."

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

Approximately 800 private consulting engineering firms in America specialize in geotechnical engineering. The gross income from these firms totals about $500 to $600 million per year. Sixty-five to seventy-five percent of this geotechnical work is per­formed by consulting engineers that belong to the Association of Soil and Foundation Engineers (ASFE). This paper presents statistics concerning the business activities and functions provided by ASFE member firms. The procedures used in typical projects are described. The paper concludes with a summary of major trends which are impacting the American geotechnical practice today.

"Rocks of the Whitewater Group (Aphebian age) oc ithin the Sudbury Basin and consist of three formations rre, from oldest to youngest: Onaping, heterolithic breccias lus an igneous-textured component; Onwatin, argillite and siltstone; and Chelmsford, greywacke with minor argillite with siltstone. Mineralization in these rocks is as follows:1) Sulphides are disseminated throughout the Onaping Formation. Pyrrhotite, the major sulphide mineral, occurs mainly as fragments; other sulphides are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite and marcasite.2) Zn, Pb, Cu, Ag and A u mineralization in the Vermilion member, a carbonate-chert unit near the base of the Onwatin Formation (Vermilion and Errington mines).3) Pyrite and minor base metals in the Onwatin Formation .4) Mineralized quartz veins, located at or near the base of the Onaping Formation, include such deposits as Moore Lake (Pb, Zn and Ag), Foisey (Zn, Pb), Papineau (Cu, Au and Co) and Proulx (Pb, Zn, and Cu). Quartz-carbonate veins in a meta-gabbro sill contain Cu, Zn, As and Au. Material from quartz veins from two former ""gold mines"" (Gordon Lake and Creighton) yielded no Au values.5) Anthraxolite veins in the Onwatin Formation .The mineral occurrences can be explained in term of either the volcanic theory or meteorite-impact theory of basin formation. According to the latter theory, the sulphide fragments in the Onaping Formation may have been formed by the brecciation of sulphide-rich pods located in the upper mantle and at the base of the transient crater; some of the sulphides may have been derived from target rocks of the Huronian Supergroup. The Vermillion-Errington deposits may represent sedimentary exhalative deposits of the Remac type; mineral-rich brines, trapped at the base of the transient crater, rose upward and precipitated the mineralized carbonate-chert under reducing conditions. These conditions continued throughout the deposition of the upper Onwatin Formation but pyrite was the only sulphide that formed.The quartz veins were emplaced during the time of basin deformation. Metamorphism remobilized and concentrated carbonaceous material in the Onwatin Formation 10 form the anthraxolite veins."

Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. The Argyle diamonds are dominantly, of eclogitic paragensis and are characterized by strongly C depleted compositions. This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. The epithermal deposit is hosted by Tertiary volcanic rocks that lie between mid-Miocene normal faults of the Northern Nevada Rift. Petrographic, laser-ablation and metallurgical observations suggested that the gold occurs in two principal forms: native (and electrum) and disseminated in arsenopyrite. It was proposed that gold is distributed between two parageneses with distinct mineralogical associations. Detailed downhole geochemical study supported the observations. Concentrations of Au, Ag, As, Sb and Se were determined from drill core and reverse-circulation cutting composites and contoured on cross-sections. Gold was indeed shown to have a bimodal distribution with the two parts separated spatially and perhaps temporally, implying that two separate genetic processes acted to concentrate gold at Mule Canyon

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

"The mechanics of crushing and grinding operations in mining and excavation processes has been investigated in a laboratory simulation study. It employs a multi-particle bedded rock target, which is subjected to multiple impacts. The impact set-up consists of a Hopkinson pressure bar and a Piston-holder system. The apparatus, employing a 38 mm diameter pressure bar, was used to apply varying but calibrated dynamic loading force on the rock particles. The energy consumed by the sample during fragmentation was determined by considering the energy carried by the incident wave and the reflected wave. The Pistonholder system is used to hold rock samples and to recycle fragments after each test for particle size analysis, for single as well as multiple impacts. The feed size selected was in the range of 9.5 to 12.7 mm for all rock samples, and the impact velocity was set at 14 m/s. Two strong granitic rocks and a relatively weak limestone were the target rocks. The resulting particle size distribution after each set of impacts, ranging from single to 10 consecutive impacts, were analyzed, and various size distribution functions (i.e. Rosin- Rammler, Swebrec, Grady and Gilvarry functions) were fitted to compare their suitability in predicting the fragment size distribution for each rock type. INTRODUCTIONCrushers are widely used in the mining industry all over the world. Understanding fragmentation behaviour of rock under crushing process is fundamental to improved productivity and efficiency in mining operations. This is particularly so as all subsequent size reduction processes such as crushing and grinding are far more energy intensive than the initial blasting process employed in breaking of in situ rock. A considerable body of experimental studies exists on the behaviour of rock crushers for specific rock types in order to aid in the design of various types of crushers. However, these studies are mainly site specific, that is, the results are largely empirical, and the fundamentals of fracture process that lead to size reduction have not been dealt with adequately. Most such studies have attempted to link the input parameters, such as feed size and crusher parameters, with output particle size, and global energy expended in the process. However the physical mechanism of crushing process is still not well understood. First of all, the energy consumed by the rock sample is hard to calculate during standard crushing or grinding tests; secondly, multi-particle test is hard to perform in the laboratory due to irregular shape of the subject rock sample. In This paper, describes a laboratory crushing apparatus for multi-particle rock samples, with sufficient control of the energy expended in the process, with a view to relate creation of new fracture surfaces in the size reduction process."

THIS BULLETIN analyzes and summarizes research at the Bureau of Mines dealing with the preparation, properties, and reactions of iron carbides in the period 1948-60, part of which was sponsored by Wright Air Development Laboratories. The objective was to develop better catalysts for the synthesis of methane and higher hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The investigations resulted in the first adequate characterization of epsilon iron carbide, which later proved to be an important intermediate in the tempering of martensite in steel. At temperatures near 170° C, the carbon in carbon monoxide reacts nearly quantitatively with finely divided alpha iron to form an iron carbide in which the metal atoms occupy the positions of the close packed hexagonal arrangement with lattice parameters of ao=2.754 A and co=4.349 A. The carbide has a composition within 2 atomic percent of that required for the formula Fe2C, a Curie point of about 370° C, a specific magnetization of 160.4 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, and a ferromagnetic moment of 1.70 Bohr magnetons. Epsilon iron carbide can be converted to chi iron carbide by thermal treatment at 343° C for about 70 hours. The chi iron carbide so formed has a Curie point of 247° C, a specific magnetization of 142.5 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 5.5 Bohr rnagnetons per iron atom. Direct synthesis of this carbide from carbon monoxide at 240° C indicates a composition within 7 atomic percent of that required for Fe2C. Chi iron carbide can be converted to cementite at 550° C in about 315 minutes. The theta iron carbide so prepared has a Curie point of 210° C, a specific magnetization of 147.3 ergs per gauss gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 3.9 Bohr magnetons per iron atom. Pure chi iron carbide reacts to form theta iron carbide by the elimination of free carbon. In the presence of an excess of free iron in intimate contact with the carbide, chi iron carbide reacts with the free iron to form theta iron carbide. The second reaction proceeds at an appreciable rate at 320° C and can be used to snythesize finely divided theta iron carbide with no free-carbon impurity at low temperatures. The ease of the reaction in the presence of free iron suggests that chi iron carbide is an intermediate in the tempering of epsilon iron carbide to theta iron carbide as it proceeds in steels. Experiments on carbon steel show that the magnetic moment of the iron atoms in martensite is about 2.2 Bohr magnetons per atom, a value approximately the same as that of the iron atoms in alpha iron. The Curie points of epsilon iron carbide, chi iron carbide, and theta iron carbide were found -in various specimens of tempered steel to be 10° to 20° C lower than normal values. This shift is probably the result of manganese in solid solution. Preparations of various compositions of epsilon iron carbonitrides show many effects of extensive isomorphism between epsilon iron carbide and epsilon iron nitride. The action of carbon monoxide on finely divided alpha iron at 400° C results in free carbon deposits containing filaments about 0.1 micron in diameter and several times as long. The filaments are characterized by nuclei of dense material located midway from each end of the filament. Although carbiding to near completion at 240° C over periods of about 300 hours produces a preparation containing no appreciable percentage of epsilon iron carbide, very brief periods of carbiding of the order of a minute result in the formation of detectable epsilon iron carbide even at temperatures as high as 325° C. The data indicate that epsilon iron carbide is an intermediate in the formation of chi iron carbide during its formation from carbon monoxide in the gas phase. Attempts to convert cementite to chi iron carbide by cold work increased the Curie point but did not change the X-ray powder diffraction pattern.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."

Whitney, assisted by 47 other members f the Institute, in the capacity of associate members of the Naval Consulting Board. During the year, the work of this board, organized and approved by Congress in 1915, has increased very materially in importance and volume, its meetings have been frequent and the work of its individual members has been such in some cases as to occupy almost their entire time in the service of the Government. Today few in business would argue with the idea that we are living in a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.
