The West's Shell Pile has been used on sites with very soft ground conditions for over 60 years. Fibre reinforced precast concrete shells 900mm long are threadled onto an internal mandrel which can be extended according to the depth driven to attain the load bearing resistance. On completion of driving the mandrel is removed leaving the precast shells to form a permanent lining to the cast insitu concrete core. To give resistance to high contamination, a tar based epoxy coat is sprayed on the outside of the shells or a flexible PVC liner is installed inside the shells to protect the core. Fundamental to the resistance to contamination is the quality of the precast fibre reinforced concrete shell, the mix design and method of manufacture. A series of detailed laboratory experiments were carried out using samples immersed in concentrated acid and sulphate solution. The long term effects of exposure to contamination is recorded in the case studies of existing piles at two gasworks sites.

The comminution technology based on High-Pressure Grinding Rolls presses (HPGR) application is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption and the development of industrial HPGR applications in ore preparation circuits is presently the world trend. However, even though the technology is already in use in many countries, which are the leaders in application of modern mining technology, there is still lack of base investigations over the HPGR performance. Throughput and energetic models of HPGR performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper authors present the method of modeling of HPGR products? particle size distribution with using of suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR performance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product?s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product?s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size particle d appeared the Weibull?s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product?s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure (P), the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the P value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. In production blasting, the fragment sizes produced are known to exercise an overwhelming influence over working costs: handling costs and tonnage throughput are directly affected by secondary breaking, loading and crushing, all functions of fragmentation. Fine coal is defined as material with a maximum size of 1/2 in. Various methods for separate washing of such coal are discussed briefly because separate treatment can lead to a higher overall recovery of coal or to a product having a lower ash content.A felspar jig is discussed in detail because it is the method most recently adopted in Australia, and because it has the advantages of compactness, flexibility and automatic Gontrol, with minimum operator attention. This jig has a variety of adjustable controls to enable the desired results to be obtained from a wide range of coals and the general application of each control is discussed.The only separate treatment of fine coal in the Illawarra district is by felspar jigs on Bulli seam coal.INTRODUCTIONAll reasonably large Australian collieries now win coal by mechanical methods. but while mechanization leads to more economic production of high tonnages, it also changes the characteristics of the coal won. In particular there is an increased proportion of fines, and an increased ash and moisture content. However, specifications of coal for sale have become more stringent, and consumers now require coals in a definite size range with a lower and more uniform ash content, as well as with a low and uniform moisturecontent.These factors have led to the need to wash and grade run-of-mine coal at the pithead. In' plants where the whole of the run-of-mine coal is treated in a jig, some of the fine coal in the feed is beneficiated; the extent depending on factors such as the type of coal and the feed rate. However, for dense medium treatment, fine coal must first be screened out, and there may then be no washing of fine coal at all.

In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

As an important mechanism for increasing production of the suction-draft-sinter process, it has been shown that gas permeability through the sinter layer plays an important role. Methods to increase production rates have been indicated and suggestions for carrying out the process have been made to improve the rate of production, reduce the fuel consumption, and at the same time obtain a uniform sinter. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy of the Technical University at Aachen to illustrate these methods. Methods of Increasing Gas Penetration Through Sinter Layers The following are of fundamental importance in determining the process cycle during the sintering of iron ores: 1) Generation of maximum temperature, since its form and range determine sinter quality. 2) Propagation velocity of the temperature maximum which controls the attainable output. 3) The convective heat transfer which influences the velocity of travel of the temperature maximum.

A small glass walled pot grate has been used to simulate drying of iron ore pellets in a travelling grate plant. This equipment has enabled the effect of decreasing grind and de- creasing pellet bulk density on plant production to be quantitatively predicted. These predic- tions are compared with plant experience. The use of the laboratory simulator in comparing the effect of various additives on plant production is also described and substantial improvements in both the goethite and free-water drying periods are predicted.

Between 2008 and 2013, the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) carried out five exploration cruises to the German license area in the eastern Pacific Nodule Belt. The first two expeditions were mainly dedicated to multibeam mapping to obtain an overview of the seafloor topography and acoustic backscatter strength. These data were used to identify ten to fourteen prospective nodule fields for potential future mining, which together cover about 16% of the total license area of 75,000 km2. During the last three cruises, three of these potential mining areas were explored in detail. For this purpose, the BGR developed a suite of exploration methods to map nodule size distributions and nodule abundances. These methods include acoustic surveys with vessel-based multibeam systems as well as near-bottom video mapping complemented by in situ sampling. The economically most valuable field has a size of ca. 2,000 km2, of which 34% is covered by medium to large nodules (> 4 cm long axis of nodules) with an average abundance of 22.4 kg/m2 and 44% is covered by small nodules (< 4 cm) with a mean abundance of 17.5 kg/m2. The total mass of nodules in this field comprises more than 30 million tons wet weight and could sustain deep-sea mining for at least 10 years.

THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. This paper analyzes the effects of geology and mining methods on surface subsidence factor, angle of draw and angle of critical deformation based on the results of 40 longwall subsidence profiles in the Northern Appalachian coalfield. Several equations were derived to show the relationships between those parameters. Furthermore, the equations were transferred and plotted in the form of several monographs for convenience of applications.

The Australian coal industry over recent years has experienced the situation whereby exploration and mine development are moving into geographical areas where the coal seams have never been mined to any extent in the past, if at all, and particularly where there is no history of experience in preparation of these seams. Additionally, the demands have been such that the development of a mine up to production stage should proceed with minimum delay. This is a situation which is of some importance and concern, in view of the coal quality requirements now experienced within world markets which can only be met, in most cases, by careful preparation. Costs are such that the preparation plant should operate as required by the situation and with maximum efficiency, which means that laboratoty information of breakage and washability characteristics which are required for preparation plant design should be accurate and available as soon as possible, even to a certain extent during the progress of the exploration.

IN THE operation of oil properties there are various difficulties with pumping wells which can often be overcome or greatly lessened if sufficient attention is, directed towards pump and tubing problems. The difficulties referred to are the wearing out of pumps, sanding up of pumps, and the sanding up of the hole. As the perforations in the oil strings are large and the oil and sand loose and unconsolidated considerable trouble is often encountered in pumping wells due to the ease with which&apos; the sand can come into the holes. DETERMINING FLUID LEVEL In determining the proper depth at which to tube a well it is essential to first find out something about the behavior of the fluid in &apos;the hole: Facts in regard to this natter can be obtained by finding the fluid level on pulling the tubing, by making a pumping test on the well tubed to various depths, and by bailing tests during cleaning out work. In ordinary oil field operations it is customary to take the fluid level at the time of pulling the tubing. This &apos;can only be done when the pump is not sanded up. This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

INTRODUCTION Since the introduction of longwall coal mining systems, reliable predictions of roof support requirements at the face and the roof caveability in the gob area have been major contributors to the success of the longwall face by means of safety and face productivity. That is, the successful operation of a longwall is well-served by good regular caving of the gob. In recent times, with the advent of increased coal face mechanization and capital investment, the evaluation of the feasibility of longwall mining has become essential. In the United States, where a face unit for a face length of about 150 metres may cost around $6 million, a quantitative system that would assist in selecting the best equipment for the coal would prove extremely beneficial. There have been many such varied investigations in the past few years. A vast -amount of work has been invested principally by West Germany [3, 7, 8, 91 , Poland [I, 101 , United Kingdom [4, 5, lo], France [4], and South Africa [4]. It is the object of this paper to review this previous research work and give an outline that may be used as guidelines for long- wall evaluation. Essentially, for the initial design phase for a longwall system, account must be taken of the geometry of the coal panel, its position relative to the surface (depth), direction of the coal cleat system, faults and in-situ stresses and other neighboring workings in the same coal seam and other seams both above and below. The advance of the coal panel disturbs the stress field and in doing so creates an abutment zone around the face. At this stage the condition of homogeneity of the surrounding rock mass does not apply. The magnitude of the rock strata pressure may exceed the ultimate strength of the rocks and create zones of clastic, plastic and elastic material, the limits of which are difficult to determine. The collapse of the gob and resulting expansion of the displaced waste roof rock, create a statically undefined support complicating an already unclear rock structure. For example, it is often a point of debate whether, indeed, the vertical strata pressure develops to regain the original magnitude of virgin stress. Under these post-failure circumstances an analytical approach based on simplified and idealized assumptions can only be considered a very general approximation. Theoretical concepts, however, may be adequately supplemented by empirical methods that are based on numerous underground observations and surveys [3, 4, 7, 8]. These methods employ the use of rock indices that very handily correspond to the competence of the roof rock mass. Scale model work [3, 41 , using equivalent materials representing the surrounding rock mass within the coal seam zone, have given valuable qualitative and sometimes quantitative data in addressing the behaviour of the rock mass around longwall panels. To characterize the state of art of caveability predictioqthe principal concepts will be reviewed with special emphasis placed on practicality for the planning of longwall operation. It has been the general observation of the authors that many of the literature surveys published in English often neglect reference to other international mining literature. It is with this point in mind that an overall review has been written including mining concepts identified with the principal coal mining countries. THEORETICAL CONCEPTS Arching Theory For the development of this theory, assumption has been made that an extracted height, h, in a coal seam results in an extracted panel of width, w . Also, the coal seam is horizontal and the rock strata of both the roof and floor are homogeneous. The primary (virgin) stress distribution will change in the roof as well as the floor. As a result of lack of support caused by the excavation (in the gob area) an additional load is developed due to the redistribution of the load around the sides of the panel, referred to as the abutment, R, where: [ ]

In practical mine use, however, the accurate research equipment is unwieldy and requires a high degree of technical skill to manipulate it. Also, it gives less general practical information to the operator in the same length of time than the method described here. Moreover, it is doubtful whether at the present stage of affairs the results obtained from the precise methods have any more practical significance than those obtained with simpler and more portable appara-tus, which can rapidly give a sufficiently reliable indication of the rela-tive dust hazard.

HISTORY OF DUST DETERMINATION IN ONTARIO The first record of mine-dust determination in Ontario is given in an article by Dr. J. H. Elliott,&apos; in which he records a few dust counts made with the Palmer spray apparatus. There were insufficient data from which to draw any definite conclusions or reasonably compare with present-day counts using the konimeter. The first konimeter dust sampling was started in the Porcupine district in 1926, using light-field counting without adhesive and with no sample treatment before counting. A method of semidark-field counting was used from about 1928 to 1931 and dark-field illumination was adopted permanently about December 1931. The konimeter has been continued as the principal means of dust sampling in the mines of Ontario, where South African practice has been adopted because in South Africa most careful study has been given the problem of silicosis, and very complete records of work done there are

Various steps, and complete sequences, for the recovery of lead and zinc from a mixed sulphide concentrate, high in silica and pyrite, have been tested.Oxidation steps of roasting in air or in a sulphating atmosphere and use of aqueous acidic, ammoniacal, and near neutral oxidation media were compared. Oxidation roasting or use of acidic media appeared most useful. Procedures for dissolution of zinc from calcines using sulphuric and sulphurous acid to avoid silica gelation problems are compared and a direct leaching procedure with sulphuric &apos;acid at controlled pH shown to be the most useful.Methods for the removal of germanium, nickel, and magnesium from zinc sulphate solutions prior to zinc electrodeposition were tested. The recoveries of zinc from ammoniacal solutions by electrolysis and distillation are compared.The dissolution of lead compounds from the residue of zinc extraction by amine and ammoniacal ammonium sulphate (AAS) solutions Was tested. Lead, sulphide was precipitated in filtera&apos;ble form from AAS solutions. The reduction of lead sulphate to lead sulphide with sulphur was difficult, but possible. The various steps were used to deveiop five complete processing sequences, of which two were shown to be technically feasible and have potential economic viability.

Developing the Generation IV nuclear reactor is an international collaborative effort. One of the most promising Gen IV nuclear reactor designs is the supercritical water (SCW) concept, in which the water coolant runs at about 625 oC at the outlet. Under this temperature and high pressure condition, the cooling water is at supercritical state, which poses significant demand for both in-core and out of core materials. High-temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and radiation damage are some of the key challenges. At present, no single commercial material can meet all the requirements of the severe SCWR conditions. Corrosion experiments per-formed under SCW condition yield various kind of corrosion modes, some are very challenging to characterize using conventional techniques. A combination of various advanced characterization techniques proofed to be essential to understand the root cause of materials? degradation.

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.
