"Extracting boric acid from saline brine by boron specific ion-exchange resin was investigated. Effects of resin amount, temperature, time and stirring speed on boron adsorption rate were studied in the experiments. The results indicated that the XSC-700 resin showed excellent boron absorbability and it performed better property for elution. The maximum boron adsorption capacity was 6.16 mg/ml in the optimum conditions: the resin concentration of 5 ml/(100 ml brine), the temperature of 60°C, the time of 5-6h and the stirring speed of 100 r/min. Boron was eluted from the resin with HCl and boric acid was crystallized by evaporating the eluate. The product of boric acid was in pure form as confirmed by XRD and other analysis techniques.1 IntroductionBoron has a number of minerals in nature such as tincal, colemanite, ulexite, and kemite, etc. [1-2]. Boron and its compounds are chemical materials of significant value. The principal industrial uses of boron compounds are in the production of glass, porcelain, enamels and detergents. Other uses include fertilizers, metallurgy, and nuclear shielding [3-4]. In recent years, because of the large-scale mining boron ore, ore resources are drained gradually. With the development of science and technology, the boron mineral resources will be unsatisfied with the future requirement. There exits abundant boron resources in salt lakes which cover about 40% of the total reserves in China. If we can obtain boron from salt lakes, it will produce great economic interests [5-6]. Therefore, actively seeking boron from salt lake and other resources in suitable conditions has become a hot spot in the research organizations of boron resources development and utilization in the world [7].There are many methods such as acid crystallization, solvent extraction and ion exchange processes suggested effective for boron extraction from aqueous solutions. Acid crystallization method has the shortcomings of complicated procedures, the pollution caused by hydrochloric and other ingredients returning to salt lakes during the extraction process. Although solvent extraction process increases the boron acid recovery efficiency, the cost of production is high [8-9]. However, Chelating resin extracting boron has the characteristics of simple process, easy operation and no pollution. "In this paper, the methods of life cycle assessment for microwave hot air systems, and the concept of green degree were proposed. Greenness evaluation index, evaluation system and evaluation model of microwave hot air systems were established. Also, life cycle assessment processing based on these ideas was introduced. Analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy decision- making method were utilized to establish and solve the greenness evaluation of assessment model, while the scores of green degree in microwave hot air systems were obtained. The results show that Life cycle assessment can be applied effectively and efficiently to the microwave hot air systems.IntroductionHot air systems are an important industrial operation condition, which is used to provide high temperature air for materials processing. Nowadays, high temperature airs are manufactured by the conventional heating processes, in which some ceramic materials are used as heating materials. However, these processes pollute the environment. Therefore, to explore new method to produce high temperature air with low energy consumption and less environment pollution are necessary.Microwaves are now being used in various technological and scientific fields in order to heat dielectric materials [1]. Microwaves irradiation has been explored in materials processing in recent years [2-3]. The main advantage of using microwave heating is that the treatment time can be considerably reduced, which in many cases represents a reduction in the energy consumption as well. Since there is energy absorption but no heat conduction, the heating is very rapid and highly efficient, resulting in energy savings and the shortened processing time [2, 4]. Compared with conventional heating techniques, the additional advantage of using microwave irradiation is that microwave irradiation achieves both internal and uniform heating [5-7]. In addition, it is more convenient to control the microwave irradiation processing, because of no direct contact between the heating source and heated materials with less equipment size and waste [2, 8-9]. Life cycle assessment is used and accepted methods for the evaluation of the environmental impacts of products or systems [10]. Recently, many appropriate evaluation methods have been developed for life cycle assessment [11-12]. These proposed methods usually are employed for the evaluating product and analyzing results [13]. Among them, the analytic hierarchy process and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation stand out as a popular method utilized in many fields [14-16]. Analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation are a combination of mathematical and statistical technique that is useful for analyzing the effects of several independent assessment aspects on the system goal without the need of the predetermined relationship between the objective function and the assessment aspects [17-19]."

Systematic quantitative X-ray diffraction analyses performed on diamond-drill cores originating from the Aandenk formation at the Loraine Gold Mine, located in the Welkom goldfield, Orange Free State, South Africa, have revealed the presence of a number of phyllosilicate mineral assemblages which have not hitherto been reported from this region. Rectorite, a regularly interstratified 1:1 mica-montmorillonite "swelling clay", is found to occur together with paragonite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, and chlorite in highly-altered friable rocks. The presence of rectorite in mill feeds may have potentially serious implications with respect to gold recovery. Quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis for phyllosilicates can be used as an aid to correlation, and also to guide the widths of stopes in underground mining. Rectorite has a unique mode of origin, which is discussed.

"This paper presents the design and angular strength analysis of microneedles for use as a transdermal interface for drug delivery, fluid analysis and sampling etc. Microneedles of different dimensions were designed and fabricated using various materials viz. Si02, OxideNitride- Oxide (O-N-0). The design, modeling and analysis was done using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software ANSYS™ 6.1. Angular strength analysis of the microneedles was done using angular loading in ANSYS™, with the corresponding inaterial property settings. Using the force-displacement settings, forces of magnitudes in the range of 10 mN - 25 mN were applied on the microneedles at loading angles ranging from 30° to 90° was applied on needles. Square and circular shaped microneedles were modeled and the displacements and stresses generated were studied to characterize the angular strength of the microneedles. The buckling and force-displacement analyses show that O-N-O microneedles are more strong and robust as compared to needles of other materials. The analysis shows that while circular microneedles have uniform stress distribution, square microneedles have low stresses concentrated along the edges.INTRODUCTIONIn modem clinical and biomedical applications, drug delivery is done either by oral administration or by hypodermic injection. Hypodermic injection of drugs using needles is often painful. Hence, transdermal drug delivery techniques are increasingly being sought out as an alternative. In transdermal drug delivery the needles puncture the Stratum comeurn - the outermost layer of the human skin. The advantage of transdermal drug delivery (or transdermal measurement) technique, is that it reduces pain and tissue trauma."

"An amorphous zirconium oxide coating was prepared by the sol-gel process using zirconium tetra-n-butoxide on the surface of aluminum to improve the corrosion resistance to salt, acid and alkaline attacks. The coating films formed on the smooth aluminum substrates under UV-irradiation indicated an excellent corrosion resistance for salt, acid and alkaline attack tests. For example, the corroded area of coating film in salt attack test for 3600ks in the order of sol-gel coating· film< chromate film <boehmite film, and the sol-gel coating film had the best corrosion resistance. The coating film prepared on the coarse aluminum substrate by a boiling treatment after heat treatment at 573K also had greater corrosion resistance, and a water-avid surface appeared a contact angle of approximately 3°.IntroductionAs given in a previous paper1; a composite film consisting of a porous layer of anodically grown aluminum oxide filled with amorphous zirconium oxide and an amorphous zirconium oxide coating layer deposited thereon via the sol-gel process utilizing the dip-coating technique, was prepared to improve the alkaline corrosion resistance of aluminum. The alkaline corrosion resistance of these composite films was increased in the range of 24 to 50 times those of conventional anodic oxide films anodized in sulfuric acid. As a result, it was proved that heat treatment at 573K after dip-coating was an important process to .remove organic component from gel film and to accelerate the densification of coating layer. Furthermore, the effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at ambient temperature on the densification of coating layer was also examined to lower the heat-treatment temperature2.Then, a sol-gel film prepared by UV irradiation at ambient temperature indicated that alkaline corrosion resistance of aluminum was superior in the range of 2.4 times to 2. 6 times that of the conventional composite film heated at 573K."

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

When hypo-peritectic carbon steel is quenched during unidirectional solidification, the region of fine columnar grain is observed. It is classified into two coexisting phases. One is coexisting phases of liquid, delta and gamma in the upper part of the region, and the other is coexisting phases of delta and gamma in the lower part of the region. To form the coexisting part of the three phases means that solidification in this experiment proceeds in non-equilibrium state. The size of the narrow side of one fine columnar grain coincides with the arm spacing of a primary dendrite and this result is the same as the hyper-peritectic carbon steel. However, the boundary of the fine grain in the hypo-peritectic carbon steel is formed in different location from that of the hyper-peritectic carbon steel. The former is formed in the skeleton of the dendrite, while the latter is formed in the interspacing of the dendrite. The region of the fine grain changes suddenly to that of the coarse grain when the delta phase in the coexisting part of two phases disappears completely. Therefore, the delta phase in the hypo-peritectic carbon steel might prevent the growth of gamma grain. In order to recognize it, ferrite formers such as Mo, V and Ni are added in the sample. Then, the longitudinal length of the fine columnar grain extends in the sequence of the no addition, Mo, V and Nb.

"The permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process. However, it can only be measured by off-line method on samples picked from the production. In order to acquire the properties of sintering mix accurately, on-line measuring of permeability is urgently required. Based on the reflection characteristics of bed permeability on pipe flowing parameters, a new method is presented in this paper for on-line measuring of sintering mix permeability. The measurement can be performed by blowing gas flow in the bed with the measuring pipe. Measuring results are obtained by picking the data on flowing rate and pressure in the pipe. The function of flowing rate to pressure may be certain for samples with the same permeability. Thus, the permeability was determined by contrasting this function to the result of off-line measuring, and the relative coefficient or R2 value was more than 99%.IntroductionThe permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process, which directly determines production and quality of sinter, or even determines whether the sinter production is carried out smoothly [1,3].The permeability have more obvious influence on vertical sintering speed, which is mainly related to air quantity passing through material bed. Under certain inducing capacity and negative pressure, the vertical sintering speed mainly depends on the permeability of sintering mix. Low permeability may make burning through point of sintering move back, and the sinter mix cannot be burnt through. High permeability may make burning through point of sintering move forward, improving production efficiency by increasing the speed of sintering machine [4] Good permeability means a small resistance of fan ,reduction of negative pressure of sintering machine, and full contact between air and sulfide, which can strengthen physical-chemical reaction during sintering process and increase desulphurization rate. In gas well through material layer process, gas-solid desulfurization reaction and gas-solid-liquid heat exchange are completed and hot gas through the combustion zone supplies the sintering process with heat. Finally uniform sintering of the material layer in height and width direction is achieved [5] While high permeability index leads to weak sinter strength, fast sintering speed, short residence time of high temperature region and little liquid phase. Moreover, liquid phase in the fast cooling process is too late to fully crystallize but forming glass phase which is harmful to sinter strength as well. Bad permeability means a big fan resistance and increase of negative pressure of sintering machine, which make the air pass through material layer difficultly. When air and mix contact difficultly, removal of sulfide reduces so that desulfurization is incomplete. Meanwhile, low caking efficiency, slow sintering speed and easily burnt sinter , reduce sinter output. Therefore appropriate permeability of sintering mix is the premise of stable burning through point and satisfactory sinter output and quality."

The United States is dependent upon foreign sources for more than 93% of its bauxite and alumina supply. Domestic production of bauxite, which comes from Alabama, Georgia and Arkansas, is limited to those bauxite ores containing less than about l ½ % iron. Bauxites with higher iron contents are generally not utilized because they cause problems in bauxite calcining and especially because they produce undesirable brick discoloration and cracking. In order to improve beneficiation and expand the utilization of high-iron or ferruginous bauxites, a mineralogical and textural study has been conducted on selected samples from the Eufaula, Alabama, bauxite district. Reflected light microscopic, petrographic, and X-ray techniques have shown that a variety of iron minerals are present, including hematite, goethite, lepidocrosite, siderite, pyrite, marcasite, and ilmenite. Although the iron minerals may be locally concentrated into concretions and pisolites, most occur as very fine grains that are disseminated and show a variety of intergrowths. Mineralogical and textural observations indicate that the fine-grained iron mineral grains may be amenable to high gradient magnetic separation.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed a image analysis methodology to correlate the energy consumed during the grinding of an ore to the mineral liberation achieved. Energy consumption values are obtained using a laboratory-scale ball mill equipped with a torque sensor, and an automated image analyzer is used to determine the liberation present in ground products. By combining liberation information with energy consumption data an appraisal can be made of the energy required to liberate the mineral(s) of interest. Results of tests performed on a complex sulfide material determined the effects of grind duration on the liberation achieved and the energy efficiency.

"This study was performed to establish the optimum leaching condition through the experiments for the oxidized roasting followed by leaching of fluorocarbonate rare earth mineral (bastnasite) using sulfuric acid, and to establish the optimum condition for the recovery of cerium by ion- sieve method from the leached solution of bastnasite. The optimum conditions for the sulfuric acid leaching by the oxidizing roasting of bastnasite concentrates are that the roasting temperature is 550 -600 °C, the roasting time is 2 hrs, the concentration of sulfuric acid is 6N, the leaching temperature is S0°C and the leaching time is 3 hrs. At this time, the leaching yield of total rare earth oxides in the leaching of bastnasite concentrates is about 91%. When cerium is recovered by ion-sieve method from the solution obtained by the sulfuric acid leaching of the roasted bastnasite, the optimum conditions are that the TREO(total rare earth oxide) of leached solution is below 70 g/l, the flow rate of leached solution is 9.6 ml/min and the ratio of height to diameter of resin packed in column is above 9. In these conditions, the recovery of cerium of yield 85% and purity 96% is possible.IntroductionThe rare earths are generally called to Lanthanides, which are totally 17 elements including Scandium of atomic number 21 and Yttrium of atomic number 39 in addition to 1 S elements from Lanthanum of atomic number 57 to Lutetium of atomic number 71. Since the separation to each element is very difficult because of their similar chemical properties, the rare earths were used as the mixed rare earths and the mischmetal without separating to each element. However, the high purity rare earths are recently produced commercially to each element so that they are used as the materials for high tech. industry such as electric and electronic materials, catalysts, optical materials, special alloy and 8Uperconductive materials, and their consumption is rapidly increasing. Therefore, the purpose of this study is firstly to prepare leached solution by using the series of process of the oxidation-roasting and leaching by sulfuric acid. Next, second purpose is the separation and recovery of cerium by ion-sieve method."

"The formation, distribution and survival of pure Al nuclei under surface pulsed magneto oscillation (SPMO) treatment were investigated with thecombination of experiments and numerical simulation. The results indicated that the nuclei originated from the whole top surface of melt owing to the oscillation of top surface induced by SPMO. The temperature field significantly affected the survival of the nuclei The electromagnetic force and flow field of the melt with SPMO treatment were simulated by finite element software ANSYS. The electromagnetic force mainly distributed below the top surface near the mould wall. The electromagnetic farce not only made the melt oscillate but also increased the convection of meh below the top surface vigorously. The oscillation near the top surface of the melt promoted the nucleation largely, and the convection increased the uniform of the temperature distribution in the whole meh which favored the survival of nucleiIntroductionAs we all know, fine equiaxed grains are beneficial fur the improvement of the mechanical property, process ability and the uniformity of metallic materials [1-2]. With the researches of recent decades, people discovered that the electromagnetic field is an efficient method to refine the solidified structure of metals [3-7]. Pulsed magnetic field technology obtains more and more attentions in recent years due to its smaller power consumption, bigger instantaneous magnetic field intensity, non-contacting with the meh and simple convenient equipment manufacturing [8-9]. However, the melts would splash fiercely when pulsed magnetic field is applied with a slightly higher power. Thus, based on the understanding of the solidification refinement mechanism of electric current pulse (ECP) [10], Gong et al [11] developed a novel technology called pulse magneto-oscillation (PMO) to refine the solidification structure. The technology can be easily applied in the solidification structure refinement of continuous casting slab. But fur aluminum continuous casting, the sump is very shallow, which greatly limits the application of pulse magneto-oscillation technology."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating improved technology for mineral flotation. A variable often neglected in flotation control is redox potential. The use of redox control is illustrated by the separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite. Laboratory testing showed that redox potential had a greater effect on product quality than collector addition. A significant need in froth flotation is greater reliability of the sensors used in measuring and controlling redox potential in mineral slurries. The USBM has developed an automated method for removing scale and reconditioning gold redox-sensing electrodes. Fouled electrodes are anodically polarized to 1.2 V versus the AglAgCI reference potential to remove scale. The electrodes then are conditioned by a brief potentiodynamic treatment to re-establish electrochemical equilibrium. In laboratory tests, this technique removed calcarious deposits from gold electrodes and reconditioned them for useful service in approximately 10 min. In plant practice, this technique would obviate the need for plant operators to manually polish electrodes, and also should result in greater reliability in redox measurements. Inexpensive, automated equipment to condition electrodes in a plant setting is described.

"In copper plating processes, a fraction of raw materials are incorporated to the final products, while other portions are discarded as effluents. In this study, the application of electrodialysis (a membrane treatment process) was studied for treatment of wastewaters from cyanide-free strike baths, in order to reuse the components of this bath: copper and HEDP. The synthetic solutions studied consider 1 % of ion concentration of the bath used in this process, simulating the rinsing waters to be discarded. The electrodialysis allowed a percentage extraction up to 73% of copper ions and 72% of HEDP from the effluent. Complexes formation between the acid and copper indicates the possibility of recovery of components in the same compartment, obtaining a concentrated solution of these substances that can be reinserted in the process, for compensating drag-out losses. A diluted solution is also obtained, that can be reused as water in rinsing tanks.IntroductionIn metal finishing industries, contaminants in wastewater and the type of treatment required are determined according to the type of operation [l]. Generally, electroplating industries employ conventional wastewater treatments, e.g. oxidation of cyanide and chemical precipitation. This stage promotes reactions with soluble compounds to produce an insoluble precipitate, removed by physical separation. The sludge is dried by press-type filters [2].In this manufacturing sector, part of the raw materials are discarded as hazardous waste. The cost of discarded compounds and the treatment and disposal of waste may compromise profit margins. In addition, water consumption per unit of production stimulates the development of methods able to recover and reuse the largest possible amount of water [3].In some plating processes, cyanide-based substances are used as complexing agents and as raw materials in form of metal salts [4]. However, the toxicity associated with cyanide has been promoting research for the development of new raw materials in plating processes.A study conducted in Brazil [4] evaluated the modification of a commercial cyanide-free bath for processes of copper coating on Zamak. In the performed study, a new alkaline copper bath was formulated using l,hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), an organic compound known for forming stable complexes with metal ions.As results of the study, the operational conditions and the formulation of a bath to obtain adherent, uniform and bright layers were established (Table I) [4]."

"2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has been widely applied in a marine environment, attributing to its excellent pitting corrosion resistance and mechanical properties which are particularly determined by the nitrogen precipitation behaviors and volume fraction of ferrite. In this paper, various cooling rates were obtained by applying four different moulds with the common gating system. By which the influence of cooling rates on nitrogen precipitation behaviors and the ferrite fraction in cast 2507 SDSS was comparatively investigated. The results showed that nitrogen porosity could easily precipitate in cast 2507 SDSS under standard atmospheric pressure. The number of nitrogen holes increased with decreasing the cooling rates, and the holes mainly distributed in three zones, i.e. the interface between the horizontal and vertical columnar grains, top vertical columnar grains and the final solidification region. Additionally, higher ferrite fraction was obtained with lower cooling rates.IntroductionDuplex stainless steels (DSS) have a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite (d) and aus-tenite (?). Due to the combined advantageous properties of d and ? phase, their application rapid-ly increased in industry [1, 2]. Super duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) is the third generation of du-plex stainless steels, of which the alloy elements Cr, Ni and N content are higher than the stand-ard 2205 DSS. Because it has high contents of alloy elements, the SDSS has better mechanical properties, and its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) reached a point 43. Hence SDSS has been used in petroleum chemical industry, the marine equipment and harsh corrosion environments [3]. SDSS contains ferrite stabilizing elements, such as Cr, Mo and Si, and austenite stabilizing elements like Ni, Mn and N [4]. Many researchers have studied the effects of these elements on the stabilization of d and ? phase and the ratio of the two phases. High nitrogen con-tent is another prominent feature of SDSS. Nitrogen addition to SDSS is very effective for improving its mechanical properties [5] and corrosion resistance [6], such as pitting resistance in NOx environment. To increase the nitrogen content in steels, a lot of work had been done. N. Nakamura and S. Takaki [7] examined the behavior of nitrogen absorption in Fe-23Cr alloy powder by sintering in nitrogen gas atmosphere, they found nitrogen content easily up to 1.0 wt. %. Using devised NH3 gas injection system, W. Park et al. [8] successfully produced austenitic Fe–23.5Cr alloys containing over 3 wt. % of nitrogen. Further-more, W.P. Tong et al. [9] stated that nitrogen percent was extraordinary high (about 10 wt. %) in pure iron plate. However, the above methods are difficult to be applied to large-scale industrial production."

In this paper various hybrid modelling architectures are proposed for the modelling and metallurgical control of pyrometallurgical reactors. Discussed are architectures in which data reconciliation is combined by thermochemical, neural net and dynamic modelling to improve the models. At the same time the data reconciliation models can act as soft-sensors for estimating unmeasurable data. Cases that are discussed are (i) the modelling of a submerged arc furnace for the production of thermal phosphorous, (ii) the processing of Sn-Pb-Zn flue dust (originating from secondary copper) in a hearth furnace, (iii) modelling of a steel converter, and (iv) dynamic modelling of a flash smelter.

"Non-ferrous metals such as copper, nickel, lead, zinc and precious metals are produced via the electrorefining and electrowinning processes. Apart from controlling electro-chemical conditions for the production of these metals, there has always existed the challenge of controlling the corrosive effect of the electrolyte environment which serves as the medium for non-ferrous metal production.The practice of acid containment in electrometallurgical operations has entered the world of high technology with the advent of advanced acid resistant materials such as vinyl ester resin which is either combined with aggregate to form polymer concrete or used to line various acid containment vessels and ·surfaces. ill comparison to some Asian, European, and African copper refineries, the North and South American copper industry has recently embraced quite heavily in the use of polymer concrete electrolytic cells and process vessels, such as electrolyte storage tanks, and in the use of vinyl ester resin for corrosion protective surface sealing 'systems in lieu of epoxy, acrylic and other materials because of its combination of higher corrosion resistance and superior flexibility.Electrolytic cell construction has undergone a transformation from a multiple part configuration to a single piece moulded/cast unit. ·The one piece moulded polymer concrete cell, which has been patented by Corrosion Technology International, with the overflow, decant, inlet, fast fill and segregation systems integrally designed is now the industry standard.. The combination of a wood, steel, or concrete frame with a lining made of lead, asphalt, rubber or plastic has been historically successful in providing limited protection from chemical and mechanical attack in electrolytic cells and electrolyte storage tanks all over the world. These combinations have now become obsolete as materials such as polymer concrete provide exceptional corrosion and mechanical protection with greatly reduced maintenance requirements and improved efficiency and productivity for the tankhouse. ill addition, polymer concrete can be disposed of in a regular land fIll which is much less costly than disposing of contaminated concrete that is normally associated with conventional lined concrete cells."

Rare Earth Elements (REE) are fundamental for modern life products and green technologies. Supply constraints and the price peak of 2011 boosted intensive research for alternatives for processing and separation. Complex monazite- type, rare earth ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron and aluminum, and radioactive thorium in their composition. These impurities are not removed by conventional concentration processes due to fine, micro-level association between the REE carrying minerals and the gangue minerals. This work presents a selective process route for REE extraction from iron-rich, monazite ores. The process involves sulfation by addition of concentrated sulfuric acid and pyrohydrolysis at temperatures of approximately 700–750 °C. Experimental results show REE extraction higher than 70% and low iron (below 5%) and thorium extraction (below 10%). A method based on thermogravimetric analyses was shown to be adequate to predict the behavior of a given ore sample in the sulfationselective pyrolysis-leaching process.

"An innovative process of reverse floatation-direct reduction-low intensity magnetic separation was developed to effectively beneficiate the superfine run-of-mine (ROM) ore mined from Hunan Province, China. Mineralogy was measured that the ROM ore is of superfine low grade hematite ore type, assaying 27.2wt%Fetotal and with main valuable minerals of hematite occurring at size between 3 to 5µm. The upgrading results show that the final iron concentrate, assaying 88.3wt%Fe total and 94.5% metallization degree was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 69.9% under the following conditions: rough concentration by grinding of ROM up to 88.7% passing 0.074 mm and reverse flotation at pH=9.4, 100 g/t starch and 200 g/t dodecylamine (DDA), and coal reducing the rough concentrate pellets containing 12% calcium containing complex additive at 1200 oC for 120 min, and finally magnetic separation of the reduced pellets by grinding up to 89.2% passing 0.043 mm at 0.08 T field intensity.IntroductionWith the rapid development of iron and steel industry in China, there has been a soaring demand for iron ores in the past decade. The imports of iron ores have increased from 148 million ton in 2003 to 628 million ton in 2009 [1]. Iron making industries increasingly demand for high grade raw materials to improve product quality and reduce operation cost. However, availability of high grade natural ores is limited and enrichment of lower grade ores is necessary to meet the demand. Therefore, large quantities of superfine low grade iron resources are necessary to utilize in China at the moment."

During the last years, the Caletones Smelter, like others copper smelters in the world, has evolved from the conventional, inefficient, pollutant and expensive technologies, to modern, environmentally friendly and efficient ones. For this reason&apos; as well as to improve its competitive position this Smelter shut down the reverberatory furnace, started up two big acid plants and has developed some pyrometallurgical technologies. The main facilities of the Caletones Smelting and Converting Process, in the present and the future, are the Teniente Converters, the reactors with a high operational availability that have reached concentrate top process capacities near to 2,400 tpd. These reactors operate in most of Chilean smelters as well as in other smelters in the world such as in Zambia, Peru and Mexico. Since 2000, the Caletones Smelting and Converting Process, has been adapted in two Teniente Converters, four Slag Cleaning Furnaces and four Pierce -Smith Converters. These facilities, together with the operation of two Fluidized Bed Dryers and two Oxygen Plants have allowed to reach concentrate smelting capacities and copper productions of 1,250 ktpy and 380 kfipy, respectively. Associated to EI Teniente Division Expansion Plan, Caletones Smelter, in the first stage, will increase its capacity to 1,440 ktpy in 2004. In the long term, Caletones has different options, such as the processing of 1,600 to 2,000 ktpy of concentrate, producing anodes, white metal or a mixture of them. These options are connected with CODELCO&apos;s Smelters & Refineries Strategic Plan, including Mejillones Project. The main challenges of Caletones Smelter are associated to the development and the consolidation of the Continuous and Environmental Friendly Processes, automation and control of different processes and to the improvement of its leadership between other Copper Smelters in the world.
