The Bureau of Mines conducted pressure-drop studies in a 4-foot-diameter simulated blast furnace shaft to compare anthracite metallurgical briquets with coke and formcoke. The test materials were used alone, layered, and in mixed burdens of commercial fuel-to-ore ratios. Anthracite briquets had a higher pressure drop per foot than furnace coke, but they had a lower pressure drop per foot than formcoke. This appears to be due to packing and shape, as well as to particle size. The superficial air velocities at which beds of briquets and furnace coke disrupted were about the same. However, if briquets of the shapes and sizes tested are substituted for furnace coke in commercial metallurgical furnaces, higher blowing pressures will be required to deliver comparable amounts of air. Test burdens with more than 5 percent material smaller than 1/4-inch diameter showed significant increases in resistance to airflow.

[Several new oilfields have been developed in northwestern Wyoming during the past 10 years, production is obtained from discontinuous, permeable sands enclosed within impermeable shales. The energy to drive the oil to producing wells in supplied by gas in solution in the oil. Most of the wells had high-initial potentials, but rates of oil production have steadily declined, indicating a dissipation of the driving energy and the possibility that large volumes of oil will remain unrecovered in the reservoirs. The studies reported in this paper were undertaken to develop laboratory data of the type most likely to be needed by persons studying the susceptibility of the Newcastle sand reservoir to secondary-recovery methods.]

This survey is one of a series of Bureau of Mines publications designed to serve the needs of Government and industry for comprehensive information on mineral commodities and activities. Copper, a versatile metal, has been vital to all civilizations from prehistoric times to the present. Its essential value in antiquity and until the nineteenth century arose from its malleability and ease of working, its corrosion resistance and durability', its attractive colors in alloyed and unalloyed forms, and, of course, its availability. The principal uses were for tools, utensils, vessels, weapons, pipe, statuary and other objects of art, and for building and architectural pur£~ses where formability, permanence, and beaut)" were necessary qualities. Utilization of copper based on these physical and mechanical properties has grown tremendously for commercial, structural, mechanical, architectural, and art items; and its capacity for forming numerous alloys has led to a myriad of applications from miniature copper and brass eyelets to huge bronze battleship propellers. The early nineteenth century marks the epoch of the greatest use of copper, transmitting electrical energy. This particular property of copper is fundamental to the spectacular growth of the electrical industry and all associated industries relying on electricity for power, light, and heat. More than half of all copper produced is used for transmission of electricity. The copper industry has been able to expand along with the mounting demand because of the ever increasing discovery of resources in the world and advances in mining, metallurgical, and fabricating technologies. World production and consumption rose progressively from about 18,000 tons in 1800 to more than 4.5 million tons in 1960. The estimated world reserve of primary- copper has more than doubled since 1935, being 212 million tons in 1960. Ninety percent of this reserve is credited to eight countries-the United States, Canada, Chile, Peru, the Soviet Union, Poland, Northern Rhodesia, and the Republic of the Congo. The United States share is 32.5 million tons of copper in ore, averaging approximately 0.9 percent. Another reserve being accumulated in the industrial countries of the world is copper products now in use that will eventually be discarded as scrap and become available for recovering secondary copper. In the United States this resource of more than 30 million tons, provides about one-fourth of the annual supply.

Part 1 of this report is concerned with the electric-furnace production of calcium aluminate and iron alloy from a variety of siliceous ferruginous ores of aluminum. The furnacing research was directed, first, to determine the extent of the field in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, in which calcium aluminates with the optimum leaching characteristics are obtained; second, to produce suitable quantities of these aluminate mixtures for pilot-plant leaching tests; third, to investigate the physical chemistry of the reduction reactions during furnacing; and, fourth, to study the economics of the process. The third and fourth steps were not completed. Part 2 comprises another phase of the work and will appear as a second Report of Investigations. It deals with the extraction of metallurgical-grade alumina from the calcium aluminate slag produced in the electric furnace and includes the following steps: leaching, desilicating, precipitating, dewatering, filtering, and washing of the aluminum hydrate. No claim is made that the data are complete, nor has the chronological order of obtaining data been followed. Rather, it is emphasized that additional work is necessary if the full possibilities of the process are to be evaluated. and made available.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 27,034-hectare Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area and the 16,544-hectare Breadwinner study area. There were approximately 535 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, and 84 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Breadwinner study area. In the Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts, both adjacent to and in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, 30,232.4 kg (972,000 02) of gold and 62,838.3 kg (2,020,000 02) of silver had been produced. Most of this production came from outside the study area. Placer properties adjacent to (and a few in) the Breadwinner study area had production of 93.1 kg (2,992 oz) of gold and 20.0 kg (642 02) of silver. Twelve properties in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area have potential for resources; eleven have alteration and/or mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta with potential for gold, silver, and tungsten resources, and one has alteration and mineralization associated with polymetallic vein type deposits with potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten resources. Adjacent to the study area, large bars of gold-bearing gravel can be found along the Middle Fork Boise River. Four properties in the Breadwinner study area have potential for mineral resources; one has alteration and mineralization associated with skarn, polymetallic vein, and, possibly, copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; two have alteration and metal assays associated with polymetallic vein, and possibly copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; and one has alteration and mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta. These four have potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and tungsten resources Adjacent to and extending into the Breadwinner study area are large bars of gold-bearing gravel along North and Middle Forks Boise River.

"INTRODUCTION One of the various phases of the work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in its endeavors to minimize the hazards that attend coal mining, is the investigation of electrical motor-driven machinery. The object of this investigation is to foster the development of explosion-proof machines for use in gassy mines. This investigation is conducted under the provisions of Schedule 2C, which prescribes the inspection and tests made upon motors, controllers, and other electrical parts to determine their ability to withstand internal explosion without discharge of any flames. The method of conducting these inspections and tests is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. Formal approval of a machine for use in gassy mines is not granted by the Bureau of Mines until the machine is found to comply with the requirements, including inspection and test. When it is approved it is entitled to classification as a ""permissible"" machine.The high regard in which machines approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are held by engineers of other countries is attested by the growing number of shipments of permissible equipment; to other nations, including Australia, Russia, Norway, Japan, and Manchuria."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grind-ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is evaluating water spray additives for the purpose of improving respirable dust control during coal mining operations, with particular emphasis on the longwall shearer. Recent field tests of surfactant-polymer reagents at two production longwall operations have shown favorable respirable dust reductions compared with water sprays containing no additive. Gravimetric dust samples obtained by a technician downwind of the shearer while following or preceding the machine showed dust reductions in the range of about 40% to 60% for some of the reagent formulations compared with using water alone. Three polymers were tested: two polyethylene oxide compounds of different molecular weight and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). All were effective for dust reduction, and two were cost effective when used in combination with sodium di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate surfactant. How-ever, the use of these reagents requires the longwall operator to be more aware of headgate dust control. Experimental evidence indicates that dust captured by reagent-treated sprays at the shearer can be reemitted in the headgate area if stagcloader-crusher sprays and other dust controls are inadequate.

Geologically, the Williston Basin is a large structural depression of sedimentary rock in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota and Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. The approximate It-mite of the basin are shown on figure 1; it is roughly circular with a diameter of about 400 miles and contains approximately 120,000 square miles. Although the petroleum potentialities in this area had long been recognized, it had not been vigorously prospected by the petroleum industry because of its geographic location, rigorous winters, depths to possibly productive zones, difficult geological problems, and the fact that more seemingly favorable areas were available for prospecting. With the discovery of oil near Edmonton, Alberta, in the prolific Devonian reefs, an incentive was given to explore for oil in the southeast extension of the same sedimentary trough, the Williston Basin. The Virden field discovery in southwestern Manitoba in January 1951 was a direct result of this southeastward movement. Discovery of this shallow field was followed soon after by discovery of' deep production on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota at Clarence Iverson No. 1 well. North Dakota then became the twenty-seventh petroleum-producing State.

The separations achieved by eight conventional cyclone washers have been evaluated to determine their performance when processing intermediate size coal of 28 mesh bottom size. The dense-medium cyclones provided efficient, sharp separations in treating feeds of up to 44 percent of near-gravity material at separating specific gravities ranging from 1.42 to 1,55 (one separation of a secondary feed was made at 1.63). Complete washability analyses are shown by sizes of the composite feed to these cyclones. The magnetite losses per ton of coal processed ranged from 0.6 to 2.0 pounds; however, of the eight plants reporting losses, seven indicated magnetite losses were 1.1 pounds or less per ton of coal processed.

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (18CNMR) spectra of nine 2-substituted pyridines, seven 3 -substituted pyridines, and nine 4-substituted pyridines have been obtained and analyzed. Substituents included both electron-releasing groups and electron-with hawing groups. Substituent effects on the magnetic shieldings of the ring carbons, except for those in the 2-positions of 2-substituted pyridines, were found to be quite similar to the effects reported for the monosubstituted benzenes, Thus, at least to a first approximation, the two classes of compounds have similar shielding mechanisms. Shieldings of the carbon atoms in the 5-positions of 2-substituted pyridines and those in the 6-positions of 3-substituted pyridines were found to reflect electron release or withdrawal by substituent groups, The pyridinium cation and the compounds 2,2'-dipyridyl and benzonitrile were also investigated.

This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . Duty on Lead Reduced. -On December 28, the President signed H.R. 5047 which reduces the duty on unwrought lead from 3.5% ad valorem to 3% ad valorem, with a floor level of 1.0625 cents per pound, effective retroactively from January 1, 1980, through June 30, 1983. Pacific Northwest Power Bill Passed. -On December 5, the President signed S. 885 which will enable the Bonneville Power Administration to guarantee 20-year contracts to its 15 major industrial customers in exchange for higher rates. In effect, the bill will have industrial customers pay some of the costs of building additional generating facilities in the Northwest, of which thermal units are expected to be a major part. BPA supplies power to six primary aluminum producers which operate eleven plants having over 30% of the primary aluminum capacity in the United States.

Based on a review of historical domestic and international chromium metal production capacity, production, consumption, trade, and trade literature, world annual chromium metal production capacity in 1995 was estimated to have been 38,300 metric tons, a drop from 43,500 tons in 1994. World chromium metal production and consumption were estimated, on average from 1984 through 1992, to have been 21,000 tons per year. U.S. consumption was estimated, on average over the same time period, to have been 6,200 tons per year. The major world chromium metal producers between 1984 and 1995 were China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States. From 1984 through 1992, world trade averaged 8,400 tons per year. Germany and the United States accounted for over 75 percent of imports on average during the same time period. U.S. chromium metal import value rose from under $1 per kg before 1964 to over $6 per kg in 1993. Over the same time period, prices rose from about $4 per kg to about $10 per kg. Chemical specifications have become more stringent. Detailed chromium metal trade, prices, value, chromium metal chemical specification, and production capacity by country are reported. A shift in trade patterns was anticipated as Japan exits production and displaces Germany as the second largest importer and as Russia increases its role in world trade.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the tin development potential of the uplands between the Kanuti and Hodzana Rivers from 1978 through 1980. Chemical and petrologic data indicate that local granitic intrusions are generally similar to "tin granites" that contain tin deposits elsewhere. The tin mineral cassiterite (SnO2) was identified in chlorite-rich greisen from the Sithyiemenkat pluton. Greisen zones are located near the intersections of high-angle, linear structural features, and samples contain up to 0.23 pct Sn. One bedrock exposure of greisen is 10 to 15 ft wide. Although some lode mineralization is present, the deeply eroded nature of the region suggests larger tin-bearing cupolas may have existed prior to erosion. Extensive stream gravel deposits have not been affected by glaciation, and potential exists for placer tin deposits. Especially favorable is a large semiclosed basin drained by the Kanuti Kilolitna River. Heavy mineral concentrates collected from surface alluvium in the Kanuti Kilolitna River valley contained up to 51.2 pet Sn (0.02 to 0.4 lb/yd3 Sn), up to 5 pct W, up to 0.4 pct Cb(Nb), and up to 0.1 pct Ta. The concentration of heavy minerals is expected to in- crease with depth. Detailed mapping and extensive surface and subsurface sampling will be needed to quantify the mineral development potential of the lode and placer tin deposits in the uplands.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a long-term groundwater monitoring and site characterization program at an abandoned 10-ha, acid-producing, copper-gold tailings impoundment in north-central Washington State. The purpose was to investigate contaminant release and transport, and attenuation mechanisms in the tailings, sediments below the tailings, and gravels downgradient of the impoundment. This report summarizes the monitoring results and physical properties of the tailings, the sediments below the tailings, and the groundwater system associated with the tailings. Water samples from the vadose and saturated zones of the impoundment were analyzed for 15 constituents. Concentrations of the same constituents were determined in water samples up to 3 m beneath the impoundment and in the shallow colluvium and deep bedrock at 76, 335, and 550 m downgradient and 168 m upgradient. Constituent concentrations within the tailings are quite variable and are influenced by pH, depth of oxidation, grain-size differential (surface area), hydraulic gradient, groundwater mixing, and the presence of hardpan layers, carbonaceous material, and organic matter. Most of the metal constituents decreased to background or near-background concentrations in the farthest downgradient well.
