The Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma lead and zinc district, better known as the Joplin district, includes the mines in southwest Missouri and in those parts of Kansas and Oklahoma that are directly adjacent. (See PI. I.) This report of investigations carried on by the Bureau of Mines gives the methods used in mining and milling and indicates in some detail the conditions that affect the efficiency of those methods; it does not attempt to discuss the geology of the district, except incidentally, as this has been described in numerous reports by several geologists. Some of the more important recent publications are those of the United States Geological Survey by Smith and Siebenthal, a Bain, b and also those of the Missouri State geological survey by Buckley and Buehler." Other reports are those by Schmidt and Leonard," and Winslow,e of the Missouri geological survey, by Haworth and Crane,! of the Kansas geological survey, and by Jenney.g Although the lead and zinc ores are closely associated, the proportion of zinc ore mined at present is far greater than in former years. For this reason and because the losses in milling zinc ores are proportionately greater than in milling those of lead, the zinc ores are here given most consideration. Only the mines and mills actually examined and tested are discussed in detail, statements of results being restricted to the mines in general, with no special reference to anyone mine. Several mill tests were made to determine in a general way the efficiency of the milling practice in this district and to discover at what stage of the process the losses were greatest. Making these mill tests proved difficult,for, because of the arrangement of the mills and the necessity of estimating the tonnage treated, systematic mill testing and sampling can be done at only a few plants. Many tables giving results of mill tests and screen tests have been omitted because they would serve only to emphasize the important points shown by other data given. The writer has tried to bring out the possibilities of making certain improvements that would effect a greater saving, and has endeavored to avoid the use of technical terms and phrases in order that all statements may be clear and easily understood.

Brown iron ore deposits in Quitman County , Ga . , were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Georgia , Department of Commerce , and the University of Alabama . Ninety- one holes were drilled , having an aggregate footage of 2,188 feet ; seventy- one holes penetrated 248 feet of iron mineralization . Average thickness of the ore zone was 3.5 feet under an average thickness of 14.7 feet of overburden . The drilling developed inferred reserves containing nearly 30 million long tons of crude ore with an average analysis of 28 percent iron plus minor quantities of manganese . Test work done by the Bureau on the crude ore samples indicated that they would upgrade by current log washer practice , with the use of a 1 /8 - inch screen , and yield 4.4 million dry long tons of concentrate with an average analysis of 52.1 percent iron plus manganese . The weight recovery obtained was 14.7 percent . Research studies made by the Bureau showed that the weight recovery would be increased by changing the screen size without any appreciable sacrifice of grade . The average weight recovery was increased to 18 percent with a 10 - mesh screen and 22.8 percent with a 20 - mesh screen . Screen tests studies indicated that there was no appreciable interlocking of the iron and manganese minerals and the clay and silica waste particles of the materials retained on a 200- mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size .

The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .

In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications/ that is, by contracts that make definite requirements regarding the heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analysis. Under many of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal offered, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled and analyzed to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor, and if it is not, the price to be paid is decreased in proportion; but if the coal is of higher quality, the price is proportionately increased. The known analyses of coals or the guaranteed analyses offered by the bidders may sometimes be used for determining the award of a contract, but if the coals offered differ widely in characteristics, it may be difficult to determine which would prove the cheapest fuel without data on their relative evaporative efficiencies. Hence, the making of evaporative tests under service conditions may be necessary in order to determine which coal is particularly adapted for successful and economical use in a certain plant. Once a particular coal is selected, however, regardless of the procedure of determining the award of a contract, then the greatest advantage of the specification method is realized, for it guarantees the purchaser receiving coal of uniform character and quality, thereby insuring the best results in the plant. The success of the specification method for the purchase of coal and the reliability of analysis now rests largely on sampling.3 Improper sampling leads to controversies, with resulting condemnation of the specification method in general and of the value of laboratory analyses and tests in particular.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied the locations and general features of 90 pegmatites found in north-central New Mexico. The dominant valuable product of the pegmatites is muscovite, both sheet and scrap. However, the Harding pegmatite in Taos County is mined only for beryl. Many attempts have been made to recover scrap mica on a large scale by mechanical beneficiation of pegmatite, but the operations heretofore have been short-lived. The Globe mine and the Apache mine, both near Petaca in Rio Arriba County, have been the most important sources of sheet mica in New Mexico. Recognition of the growing need for some of the minerals derived from pegmatites led the Bureau of Mines to investigate the occurrences of pegmatite.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations-in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Deparment of the Interior. It presents analytical data for 4,397 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1952 and January and February 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

[IN COMPILING the table of analyses of this bulletin every available source of information was studied. These sources, as listed at the end of the table, were many and varied, and it believed that the tabulation gives the best general information obtainable. However, its known accuracy and completeness of coverage necessarily fall far short of published data on coals of the United States. A table of world production of coal and lignite, as and published by the Bureau of Mine, of world resources of coals, brown coal, and lignite, as published in the Yearbook of the World Power Conference, 1948, are included for convenience of the reader. The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1939,459 / producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356 acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smakover field, which rose td an average of 444,9507 barrel daily during that year. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,680 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1953 and January and February 1954. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

The creeks draining Cape Mountain, on the western tip of Seward Peninsula, Alaska, comprise the Cape Mountain tin-placer district. Because of the war-caused shortage of tin, the Bureau of Mines in 1943 conducted a churn-drill placer reconnaissance to explore the district. Favorable indications were found, and plans were made for further investigation of the deposits; the plans were abandoned when tin again became plentiful. In July 1951 the Zenda Gold Mining Co. was granted a Defense Minerals Administration (Defense Minerals Exploration Administration after October 1951) loan to continue exploration of the more favorable areas indicated by results of the Bureau's investigation. Equipment was moved to the area in the fall and winter of 1951-52. During the 1952 field season, 209 churn-drill holes totaling 7,521 linear feet and 10 test shafts totaling 96 linear feet were sunk on the Cape Creek drainage. Work was resumed in 1953, when 56 churn-drill holes totaling 3,157 linear feet were drilled on Boulder Creek. The company planned to drill Goodwin Gulch and Goodwin Creek, but no further work was done owing to lack of capital.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 547 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 340 samples were collected during calendar year 1967. The remaining 207 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting, permission to publish the results were not received until 1967. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. The Bureau of Mines has conducted this survey in the United States since 1917, and in 1965 it was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 516.4 Nine previous publications have been made to present results of 7,618 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1967. The first three, Bulletins 486,5 576,6 and 6177 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other six

The method for determining the effective porosity, of oil- and gas- bearing sand described in this report is a development of an earlier method devised by Bureau of Mines. The apparatus has been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure has been in use for many years without essential changes. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 2,000 porosity determinations for oil sands in the fields of 13 states. A selected bibliography of articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of determining porosity Is a. part of this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and ,on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

Coal mining in the United States established a good safety record in 1939. The death and injury rates per man-hour of exposure to risk were favorable compared with most previous years, and the number of persons killed or injured in proportion to the quantity of coal mined was also lower than in any other year for which figures are available. Moreover, productivity per man-hour was higher than ever before. The number of man-hours of work performed increased 9 percent over 1938, but there was a slight decrease in the number of men employed. Reports from operating companies showed 539,375 men employed during the year, and the period of operation averaged 179 workdays per man. Man-hours of work numbered more than 678 million. Accidents to the workers resulted in 1,078 fatalities and 54,015 nonfatal disabling injuries, causing disability of the employee for more than the remainder of the clay on which the accident occurred. For each million man-hours of exposure of the employees to mining hazards the fatality rate was 1.59 compared with 1.78 for 1938, and the injury rate was 79.65 compared with 82.61 for 1938. Production of coal averaged 0.661 ton per man-hour compared with 0.637 ton in 1938. The weighted average length of the workday was 7.03 hours or virtually the same as the previous year's average of 7.04 hours. Measured in man-hours, the average period of employment per man was 1,257 hours in 1939 and 1,147 hours in 1938.

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free- swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1963 . In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 6,999 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.
