"In 1982 an extensive study was carried out to determine the best means of size reduction for the ore to be hoisted through the borehole hoisting system at Sherritt Gordon's Fox Mine.The study examined three alternatives:1. a jaw crusher,2. pneumatic rockbreaker(s) at a grizzly, and3. hydraulic rockbreaker(s) at a grizzly.The final decision was a compromise between alternatives 2 and 3. Two rockbreakers, one pneumatic and one hydraulic, were installed over a single grizzly. Some modifications have been made to the system, but over-all it has operated at acceptable levels since its installation in July 1983.As all the ore passes through a jaw crusher before being hoisted to surface, an evaluation of the relative performance and cost-effectiveness of the jaw crusher and the two types of rockbreakers is possible. This paper outlines the initial study, and compares the three breaking systems in operation at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox Mine of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. is located 800 kilometres north of Winnipeg near Lynn Lake in Northern Manitoba. Production at the copper-zinc orebody began in 1970 at a rate of 3,000 tons per day. Over 12.5 million tons will have been hoisted from the underground mine when the ore reserves are depleted in October 1985.The mining method at Fox Mine is sub-level open stoping with delayed backfilling are from the upper level stopes, above the 2000 level, is mucked on the main levels established at 400-ft elevation intervals, and is fed through a central orepass to the crusher located on 2100 level. Production in the lower levels commenced in 1975, and ore from the 2200 and 2400 level stopes was hauled up a 15010 ramp by 26-ton trucks to the 2000 level orepass dump. Projected production rates from the 2600 and 2800 levels using the trucking system were too low, and therefore, in 1983 a borehole hoisting system was commissioned to hoist that ore'!'. One thousand tons per day of ore are skipped through an 8-ft diameter borehole from the 2650 level loading pocket and dumped on the 2000 level. The ore is transferred by LHD to the main orepass for crushing before being conveyed to the main shaft for hoisting to surface (Fig. 1)."

"The processes leading to the fall of rock compartments from rock walls are poorly known as well as their velocity. It ensues that quantitative prediction of the failure time for a rock compartment which is presently stable, is not possible by a purely geomechanical approach. However a quantitative probabilistic prediction of rockfalls at the scale of a rock wall is possible if the spatial-temporal rockfall frequency can be determined or estimated (Hantz, 2011). For a better knowledge of failure processes and frequency, rockfalls have been detected in several rock walls, using annual terrestrial laser scanning, allowing comparison of the frequencies in different geological conditions. For one of these rock walls, the spatial detection have been completed by a precise dating of the events, using a quasi-continuous photographic survey (one photo every 10 mn), allowing the study of the influence of meteorological factors.The precise dating of rockfalls has been carried out for the Saint-Eynard cliff which towers above a residential area of the town of Grenoble (French Alps). The South-East facing cliff consists in bedded limestone gently dipping North-West and located at an elevation between 850 m and 1100 m. The surveyed zone is about 750 m large and 250 m high. Between 01/02/2013 and 26/11/2013, 65 rockfalls ranging between 0.01 m3 and 20 m3, have been detected by diachronic comparison of laser scanner data and dated by comparison of photographic images. The temperature at the elevation of the cliff has been calculated from the temperature measured (every 5 mn) at a meteorological station located at an elevation of 245 m and 2.5 km away from the cliff, using a temperature gradient of 0.003°C/m (D’Amato et al., 2014). The precipitation were measured 900 m away from the cliff at an elevation of 469 m. Different meteorological conditions have been defined: (a) “freeze” qualifies days with negative mean temperature (but with a thaw period, except for two days); (b) “thaw” qualifies days with positive mean temperature, but following a freeze day; (c) “rain” qualifies days with precipitation.Table 1 shows the rockfall temporal frequency for the different meteorological conditions. It appears that the frequency is about 6 times higher the freeze days, 2.5 higher the thaw days and 3 times higher the rain days than days without freeze, thaw or rain."

"The prevalent metal extraction processes for most reactive metals are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. The feed material for both of these processes is the anhydrous chloride of the metal under consideration. Dehydration of the feed material is then a critical step in the production of most reactive metals and requires rigorous thermodynamic analysis. Thermodynamic data for most of the reactive metal chloride hydrates have not been measured. Improper dehydration of the metal chloride may lead to a prohibitive amount of hydroxychloride, oxychloride, and oxide. To prevent hydrolysis a certain pressure of hydrogen chloride is required. An estimation and prediction model is presented for the vapour pressures of reactive metal chloride hydrates in an attempt to deduce the conditions necessary for dehydration to proceed without hydrolysis. Thermodynamic data including heat capacities, standard entropies, and standard enthalpies are estimated/predicted for all conceivable intermediate hydrate compounds. Estimations are based on published data as well as trends proven in similar systems. The thermodynamic estimations and predictions are presented for the magnesium, neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium chloride hydrates. INTRODUCTIONThe high reactivity of metals such as the alkalis, alkaline earths, and lanthanides prevents their reduction by traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgy. In their elemental form, these metals are raw materials in the manufacture of intermediate products such as alloys and electronic components. Currently the only two viable metal production methods are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. Various feed materials have been proposed for these processes. Using the chloride of the metal as a feed material offers advantages in separation and purity of the final product, as well as lower energy input. Chlorides, however, are hygroscopic and must be dehydrated before use. Improper dehydration will lead to a prohibitive amount of oxychloride which will lower efficiencies and contaminate the final product.Optimum conditions for proper dehydration of MgCl2•6H2O to produce pure MgCl2 without hydrolysis have been calculated from existent thermodynamic data and have been reported previously (Kipouros, 1987; 2001). Calculations were also performed for the case of production of pure anhydrous NdCl3 from NdCl3•6H2O (Roy, 1997)] and the mechanism of dehydration was elucidated. Some thermodynamic studies on the dehydration of chlorides of the rare earths have also been conducted (Sundstrom, 1997; Hong, 1997; Aschcroft, 1968; Haeseler, 1965; Ukraintseya, 1989)."

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

The major fluorite producer in British Columbia was the Rock Candy Mine, inactive since 1942. Other deposits of economic interest include the Rexspar deposit, in which fluorite is associated with uranium and rare earth mineralization, and the Eaglet and Liard River occurrences. THE former Rock Candy fluorite mine, located 26 km north of Grand Forks, is the only major past producer of fluorite in British Columbia. The deposit was in production from 1918 to 1929 and again in 1942; total output was about 36,000 tonnes with average grade between 22 and 32 per cent CaF2. The fluorite body occupies a steeply-dipping vein structure, approximately 175 m long and up to 12 m wide, in porphyritic syenite. The chief vein-filling minerals are quartz and fluorite with local small len ses of barite. Fluorite content decreases with depth and the deposit becomes silicified. The Rexspar (or Birch Island) fluorite deposit is located 130 km north of Kamloops. The deposit is complex with rare earth elements and high uranium values, but !1uorite mineralization forms an independent zone adjacent to the uranium orebodies. Fluorite is present as fine-grained impregnations and as breccia cement in strongly schistose or brecciated alkali feld spar porphyry. Reported reserves are 1,088,000 tonnes of 22 per cent CaF2 or 450,000 tonnes of 29 per cent CaF2. 268 Another potential deposit of fluorite is Eaglet, situated on the north side of Quesnel Lake. Fluorite occurs as a stock work with scattered veins and irregular lenses up to 20 centimetres wide and as impregnations in altered Proterozoic Kaza Group feld spathic gneiss over an area of 1,500 metres by 500 metres. To date (1983) approximately $2 million have been spent on the exploration of this property and reserves of 18.8 mimon tonnes grading 11.59 per cent CaF2 have been outlined . A group of significant occurrences is known from north of Liard River Hot Springs Park , where fluorite occurs in small zones up to 17 m thick along the interface between Middle Devonian Dunedin Formation limestone and Middle Devonian to Mississippian Besa River Formation argillite. Fluorite, associated with witherite, barytocalcite and barite, is present as replacement bodies, breccia fillings and minor veins.

"The Maybrun copper deposit IS In a succession of pillowed basaltic flows in the Wabigoon sub-province, northwestern Ontario. The rocks have primary flow morphologies and remarkably well-preserved crystallization textures, including quench-textured plagioclase, in spite of metamorphism to the amphibolite facies. The sulphide assemblage chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-cubanite with minor sphalerite and pyrite is primarily in interpillow spaces and is stratabound. Basaltic rocks immediately enclosing the copper sulphide minerals have an enrichment in Fe, Mg and K and depletion in Ca and Na relative to surrounding flows. The Maybrun deposit is interpreted to have formed contemporaneously with volcanism and alteration, and was subsequently metamorphosed with the enclosing basalts.IntroductionThe association o f significant base metal accumulations with mafic submarine flows in the Archean is as yet poorly documented. Such deposits, where noted, have typically been small, and are therefore commonly over looked. The Maybrun Mine, a 2.6 x 106-tonne copper deposit in pillowed basalt, has many similarities with large, well-documented volcanogenic deposits. Given the interpretation of the Maybrun Mine to be volcanogenic in origin, there is n o reason why similar processes could not produce large deposit s. This is an important realization in an area where Archean submarine mafic rock s are very common, but frequently are examined only superficially. As gold commonly occurs in deposits such as Maybrun, even modest-sized deposits may be economic. The basalts at Maybrun are remarkable for amphibolite-facies rocks because of their extremely well-preserved delicate volcanic textures, including quench textures.The Maybrun Mine is one kilometre south of Atikwa Lake, in the Wabigoon sub-province of the Superior structural province, 75 km southeast of Kenora, northwestern Ontario, at longitude 93°35'W, latitude 49°25'N (Davies, 1973). Archean metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks and intrusions underlie the area. Goodwin (1970) concluded that the mafic and minor felsic metavolcanic rocks, as well as the overlying metasedimentary rock s, were an eastward extension of the lower cycle of the Keewatin type section for the Lake of the Woods area. He estimated that the stratigraphic thickness of Keewatin rock s in this area is about 6900 m, of which 87% is basalt. The flows contain numerous interlayered sills, predominantly of basaltic composition; they have been extensively folded, faulted, metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and intruded by numerous felsic bodies, most importantly the Atikwa Batholith."

For the period January 1st, 1942, to January 1st, 1946, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics records the gold production of the world as 118,788,000 fine ounces. If we include 1946 at the same rate as 1945 (26,- 590,000), we arrive at a total of 145,378,000 fine ounces in the past five years . Included in these figures are estimates of Russian output at 4,000,000 ounces per annum for the five years, and 1,300,000 ounces per annum for Korea and Japan. The remaining 120,000,000 ounces represent the aggregate production from official reports of the other gold producing areas of the world, with the exception of the 1946 figures, as noted above. At $35.00 per fine ounce, this represents $5,188,230,000. According to the reports of the Federal Reserve System of the United States, on December 31st, 1941, the monetary gold reserves of the United States were $22,736,- 600,000 (at $35.00 per fine ounce) , while on October 31st, 1946 (latest available) , they had fallen to $20,402,000,000, a decline of $2,334,600,000. Adding this decline to the value of the new production for the five years, we have a total of $7,522,830,000, which has been absorbed by the rest of the world since Pearl Harbour, a rate of absorption of over $1,500,000,000 per annum. This has taken place at a rime when the advocates of purely managed currencies had convinced many people that gold performed no really essential function in the world's economy, and that we could get along perfectly well without it. It was pointed out that gold could not be eaten, it could not clothe our nakedness, it could not shelter us from storms, and, therefore, it was a non-essential, even though it could be used to settle international balances of trade. Apparently, the world as a whole still regards it as preferable to the paper promises of governments, however sound, relatively, they may appear. Actually, we have no way of measuring the true strength of this feeling, because the principal governments of the world have made it legally impossible for their citizens to own gold, except in the form of ornaments.

"Consolidated Sudbury Basin Mines Limited owns two mines, 4 miles apart, near the southwest end of Sudbury Basin. The Errington mine lies close to the north boundary of Creighton Township and about 18 miles by car from Sudbury. The Vermilion Lake mine is in Fairbank Township, on the south side of Vermilion Lake.The first discovery of base-metal mineralization within Sudbury basin was made by James Stobie in 1897 at Stobie Falls on the Vermilion River, half a mile west of the Errington mine. A few years later Alphonse Oilier made a discovery of massive pyrite with base-metal sulphides near the west end of the present Errington workings.No work of consequence was done on these discoveries until 1924, when Joseph Errington acquired options on a large acreage of ground which was later taken over by the Treadwell Yukon Company Limited. After considerable diamond drilling this company sank No. 1 shaft in 1926. In the next three years, a large amount of underground development was done, a pilot mill was constructed and operated for two years. All operations ceased in 1931 with the fall in metal prices. While in operation the pilot mill treated 186,172 tons of ore the average grade of which was 1·07 per cent copper; 1 10 per cent lead; 4·60 per cent zinc; 0·03 ounces gold; and 1 70 ounces silver.Up to the time of closing in 193 l there had been completed at the mine 26, 790 feet of lateral work and 75,500 feet of surface and underground diamond drilling. The company records, however, showed no figures on ore reserves, except broken ore in stopes amounting to about 60,000 tons. A study of the plans, prior to reopening the mine in 1952, showed 1,450 lineal feet of ore (at 1952 prices) opened up by drifting on the 300-foot and 500- foot levels. It is clear that no comprehensive picture of the structure was had at this time. The orebodies were considered to be very irregular pods scattered through masses of quartzite-carbonate in a sheared zone about 800 feet wide. In some way the ore was believed to be related to the tuff-slate contact zone. With this picture it was impossible to make a reasonable ore estimate or even gauge the tonnage potentialities with any feeling of reliability."

"The distribution of gold in the grinding-classification circuit of an operating gold plant was determined by assaying the size fractions of samples from each of the streams. This analysis identified the streams with the maximum potential for gravity recovery of gold and revealed that there was up 110 seventy-five times as much gold in the primary cyclone underflow as in the concentrator feed.Laboratory jigging and tabling tests were done on samples from two of the streams to determine what the recovery might be with a gravity circuit and to show that a high grade concentrate could be produced. A numerical simulation procedure was used to calculate a material balance for a circuit that included gravity separation on the primary cyclone underflow. The numerical simulation optimistically indicated that as much as 84% of the gold might be recovered in a reasonable grade of concentrate even though the recovery in batch bench scale tests was only 14%.Incorporation of a gravity separation device would reduce the inventory of gold in the grinding-classification circuit.INTRODUCTIONMany gold concentrating plants include a gravity concentration operation while others do not and the reasons that some do and some do not is not clear. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of gravity circuits are discussed by Penman (Penman 1987) without clear cut resolution. Penman's comments elicited an interesting response from Lloyd (1989) who produced a simple way to determine if the addition of a gravity concentration circuit would enhance the recovery of gold. Lloyd's method does not consider the cost of running the circuit so it only partially answers the question. There are reports in the literature (Wells and Patel 1991, Matwijenko 1988) that as much as 60% of the entire production comes from a gravity circuit when it is used, and that the grade of the concentrate produced often exceeds 65% gold, an assay that far exceeds most Merrill-Crowe precipitates that are sent to refining. In at least one instance (Hood 1984) a range of recovery from 40-50% was indicated from laboratory test work and the plant subsequently realized recoveries in the range of 26-40%. Despite these favorable numbers other plants use gravity separation when as little as 20% of the gold is recovered in the gravity concentrate (Carter 1992)."

Altonorte began as a concentrate roasting operation in 1988 under the name of Refimet. In 1993, a copper smelter was built with a design capacity of 203,000 tonnes per annum of concentrate. Since 2001, many technological advances have been made in Altonorte, where the biggest Noranda Reactor in the world is installed being the first Noranda Reactor reaching above one million tonnes of copper concentrates processed per annum. In 2013, Altonorte was acquired by Glencore. Recently due to various new environmental regulations in Chile, Altonorte has evolved to new standards of operation in order to reach the vision of becoming a World Class Smelter. This paper describes the path followed to improve safety, environmental performance, process capacity, reliability, and productivity. The foundation for the growth and success in Altonorte is our People. Employee engagement and branding of our cultural journey is what allows Altonorte to face the future with the certainty of becoming a World Class Smelter. INTRODUCTION Altonorte is located in Antofagasta, the mining capital in the north of Chile and is the last smelter built in Chile practically completed with second hand equipment. The biggest technological change in Altonorte occurred during the phase 3 expansion in 2003, where the old Reverberatory furnace was shut down and replaced by the biggest Noranda Reactor installed in the world. The vessel measures 5.3 m × 26m. ºAdditionally, this project contemplated a new rotary dryer, three (3) new Peirce Smith converters, new anode furnaces and a new Acid plant. The nominal capacity was to treat 816.000 tons of new concentrate per year. In 2008, a new expansion phase was implemented where a new double absorption acid plant replaced the oldest acid plant. Bottlenecks such as blowing capacity and oxygen availability were solved installing a new air blower and a new contract was negotiated with our oxygen supplier to increase oxygen availability up to 683 tpd. This improvement defined the current nominal capacity of 1.100.000 ton of new concentrate per year. Current process description All concentrates are received by trucks directly from domestic mines or from the Antofagasta international port in cases of imported concentrates; the concentrate warehouse has a capacity of 25 kt where the blend is prepared to feed the smelter.

"A market survey of all underground mines in Canada (Fig. 1) was completed to determine the ex1ent to which cable bolts are being used as ground support. One hundred and nine questionnaires were distributed with 65% of them being returned completed. As a result, the quantity, types and locations of cable bolt installations have been determined. In addition, the grout pumps used, time required and cost of installations have been addressed. The popularity of other support types used in underground mines is summarized.IntroductionRock reinforcement consists of installing support within the rock mass (internal) or within the excavation (external). Within the past twenty-five years several new types of ground support have been introduced within the mining industry. Cable bolts were first introduced to the Canadian mining industry in the 19605 (Gramoli, 1975).Cable bolts have gained increased acceptance as a method of ground support during the past decade. The cable bolt is comprised of one central wire surrounded by six slightly smaller outside wires and typically having an over-all diameter of 15.2 nun to 15.9 nun (0.6 in. to 0.625 in.). The cable wires are made from high-strength steel with an ultimate strength of 26 tonnes (58 000 Ibs) (Goris, 1990). Current cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to reinforce the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used in open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods (Fig. 2).They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, they are generally less than 20 m (65.5 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage compared to previously used ground support is that the cables are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils allowing relatively long support to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m).With the advent of bulk mining methods which require comparatively large stopes, it has necessitated the use of relatively long support tendons to stabilize the large spans being created. As a result, the use of cable bolts for ground support in mines has increased significantly within the past decade."

"Simulation is the process of designing a computerized model, of a system or procedure, for the purpose of understanding its behaviour and developing strategies to control its operation. Simulation models are rapidly becoming an effective tool for mineral processing plants. Powerful software and fast hardware are more readily available than a basic understanding of the theory of mathematical probability and applied statistics that process simulation models demand.Simple spreadsheet software can be used to develop simulation models that take into account any set of conditions at a mineral processing plant. In addition to an unbiased estimate for each variable in the set on which two-and three-product formulas are based, reliable variance estimates for all variables are required. How to estimate variances, effectively and at the lowest possible cost, and how to compute variances for simple functions such as the metal content of a quantity of ore or concentrate, or more complex functions such as the percentage recovery at a mineral processing plant, are the key to useful simulation models.IntroductionSimulation models for systems and procedures have become one of the most powerful and effective applications for computers( 2.6). Simulations are applied to a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Generally, a model is designed to investigate the effects of changes in and interactions between a set of variables before a system is in operation or a procedure is implemented, by simulating weeks, months, and even years of operation, in a few minutes of computer time. Along with practical and useful applications always comeabuse and misuse. For a simulation process cannot be more reliable than the methodology that was applied to design the model, to estimate variables and variances, to check performance, and to verify validity. A mineral processing plant is a dynamic system that changes continuously as a function of time but within probabilistic constraints that can be estimated by applying statistical tools and techniques to the variables and variances that interact in the system.A model should be designed to simulate not only the set of variables but also the variance for each variable. Models in which constant variances are used to generate normally distributed random numbers, are less realistic than models in which the variances are simulated first, and then used to simulate the variables."

This paper reports on an energy efficiency analysis completed as part of a research project looking at energy reduction opportunities in minerals processing operations. The plant discussed is a gold production facility owned by Newmont Gold in the Tanami region of central Australia. Due to its remote location, lack of nearby gas pipeline or power grid, the operation has been completely dependent on diesel fuel for its electricity generation and transport needs. The mine and processing plant use electrical power at a rate of 12MW to 18MW, resulting in a monthly electricity cost of over US$1.5M. The high cost of diesel combined with an impending power generation capacity shortage drove Newmont to undertake the energy efficiency study. An energy audit of the plant showed opportunities for significant energy savings through the strategic use of waste heat, fuel replacement alternatives and renewable energy sources.

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of variables, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. Gekko détient la licence exclusive pour la résine AuRIX®100 produite par Purolite, et la colonne G-REX a été spécifiquement conçue pour cette résine. C’est à la mine d’or Ballarat de Castlemaine Goldfields que l’expérience opérationnelle a été acquise. L’usine de Ballarat, en exploitation quasi-continue depuis 2008, traite une solution concentrée non clarifiée de lixiviation. L’extension de cette technologie à des capacités supérieures et à une chimie plus complexe est examinée."

Abstract - The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temper- ature, the composition of the albitizing fluids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters.

"Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit.This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration."

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. "Abstract - As a contribution to the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project, an index-level database comprising information on 142 SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and occurrences was constructed in Microsoft Access 95 format. Although consisting of only basic information, the compilation, with full referencing of all data, is possibly the largest non-corporate SEDEX Pb-Zn database in the world. It thus provides an opportunity to make geoscience queries of SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits on a scale not previously available. This report provides a summary of the results of a few such queries both as a contribution to a better understanding of SEDEX lead-zinc deposits and as a demonstration of what even such a simple database can offer.During the compilation process, it became apparent that SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits could be assigned to one of the following three sub-types: Type 1 (53.5% of total) in which sulfide minerals are the only exhalative components; Type 2 (33.1%) in which the exhalative components are sulfides plus chert, siderite/ankerite, and/or barite; Type 3 (13.4%) which contains any components of Types 1 and 2 plus abundant iron-oxide minerals (commonly magnetite) and/or is associated with iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.Highlights of systematic queries of the database reveal that:1. a majority (84%) of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits are not underlain by a discordant footwall feeder zone or vent complex;2. 63.6% of deposits occur in Proterozoic strata followed by a second peak in the Devonian (16.8%). Of those in the Proterozoic, 83% of Type 3 deposits occur in the Gondwanaland supercontinent, whereas only 42% of Type 2 and 39% of Type 1 are located in this large paleo-landmass;3. median (Pb+Zn) grades in Types 1 and 2 fall between 9% and 10% with a majority clustering within this range. Type 3 grades, however, range from ~1% to ~20% (Pb+Zn) with a median of 5%; 4. median size of Type 3 deposits is ~33 Mt, whereas Type 1 and 2 median sizes are ~7 Mt and ~8 Mt, respectively.The report concludes with a brief discussion of how an index-level database such as this can be used in conjunction with other, similar databases to reveal interesting and instructive relationships for guiding both research and exploration."
