The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. B. P. Thomson (South Aust. Dept. of Mines): Dr. A. B. Edwards presents in the published discussion on the above paper, his interpretation of the dolerite dyke-lode relationship as a major objection to the syngenetic origin for Broken Hill ore bodies to which Mr. Condon subscribes.Dr. Edwards claims that the dyke-lode relationships indicate clearly that the Broken Hill orebody was formed after the folding and regional metamorphism of the Willyama Series. Field evidence compels m:e to join with H. F. King (1958), in finding this conclusion unacceptable-as follows:(1) Broken Hill type mineralization, as defined by King and Thomson (1953), is clearly confined by the regional sillimanite isograd and does not extend into the lower temperature almandine and biotite zones as does the Thackaringa type mineralization.(2) In the Corruga area the writer has mapped a dolerite dyke apparently cutting a conformable quartz gahnite lode of the Broken Hill type (see Edwards 1958, p. 12).(3) At the Champion mine a similar lode is cut by a fine grained granite dyke.An alternative history of the dolerite dykes to that given by Stillwell & Edwards (1956, p. 26) appears possible. It has been suggested by the writer in an unpublished thesis, (Thomson 1955, p. 30), that the pyroxenite and serpentine plugs and dolerite dykes are rheomorphic end-products of a complex regional metamorphic and metasomatic process involving the formation of amphibolite and pegmatite. The analogy in composition between the dolerite and normal amphibolite is close (see Edwards 1958, Fig. 1, p. 22).

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. An investigation into the reliability of the data being collected at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland allowed on-site ventilation personnel to scrutinise pressure and volume measurements collected from the primary surface fans. The investigation effectively identified discrepancies being reported to the on-site remote monitoring system. The difference between the real-time and static measurements on the P63 RAR shaft identified that the in situ differential pressure transducer and piezo annubar system was not operating correctly. This indicated a deficiency of approximately 30 per cent reporting back to the remote monitoring software versus the live readings measured with the Pitot tube bomb and ALNOR AXD610 pressure micro-manometer.Constant monitoring of an operations ventilation network is imperative to ensuring that the underground atmosphere provides a safe and healthy workplace. Further benefits to real-time monitoring allows for the early indication of network failures and promotes increased availability. An innovative approach to out engineer and improve the existing measuring equipment from the 1970s was sought.The use of ultrasonics in the mining industry is not new with ventilation management systems (VMS) equipment available within the marketplace. The introduction and implementation of a reliable product for real-time monitoring was a challenge to overcome due to limited access and suitable measuring points within the mine. The available equipment on the market through mainstream suppliers was not suitable for the unique application required due to the in situ installation of the surface fans. A solution was identified in the oil and gas industry through collaboration and innovative thinking. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. In recent years, models SLon-2250, SLon-2500, SLon-3000 and SLon-4000 have been developed. The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

"Currently mine process studies and geochemical waste characterisation are considered as two interdependent studies, necessary for the development of the mine and inclusion in the environmental impact statement (EIS). Geochemical waste characterisation will utilise the simulated tailings produced by the mine process studies team to understand the behaviour of the tailings, but the two teams rarely integrate these to develop a coherent and agreed final design.Thorough mine waste geochemical assessments can develop processes to minimise environmental harm, resulting in substantial savings in the decommissioning, closure and rehabilitation phases, and may also be able to address changes in mineral processing methods that can result in substantial savings in process inputs, or even recovery of metal concentrates.Based on geochemical waste characterisation, the full cost of waste management can be calculated and incorporated into the costing of milling.  This allows for a more effective evaluation of the metallurgy.  A number of examples are presented in which substantial improvements have been made from the collaboration of both the metallurgical and geochemical teams during planning and the metallurgical team and environmental team during operations.*This paper is only available for individual download. This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.

The development of a process for removal of iron oxides from ilmenite is outlined whereby the Ti02 content of Western Australian ilmenites can be upgraded from 55 to approximately 90 per cent. In the first stage, the iron oxides are reduced with solid carbon (coal) to metallic iron. Experimental reductions were carried out in crucibles, a fluidized bed, and a small pilot plant rotary kiln. The reduced ilmenite was then agitated in aerated water, in the presenceof catalysts, so that the iron "rusted" away from the ilmenite grains and the precipitated iron oxide was easily separable by decantation.The influence of variables on the rates of reduction and oxidation are discussed. The oxidation rate was examined for both the physical oxygen transfer characteristics and electrochemically by reference to Pourbaix diagrams, in which redox potential is plotted against solution pH.The upgraded ilmenite is expected to be an attractive material for pigment manufacture, and the iron oxide has prospects of being a marketable by-product. The process may possibly be applied to other ores.INTRODUCTIONThere are extensive deposits of ilmenitic beach sands, Le. iron titanium oxides of the general formula FeTi03, 'occurring in the lower south-west portion of Western Australia, and although there has been considerable commercial development, local producers face keen competition on a freight-cost basis. Thus the removal of the unwanted iron oxide constituent would have the double advantage of reducing the freight differential and presenting a more attractivematerial to pigment manufacturers.

To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.
