No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.

This is the third in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C. F. R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The second report gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936)4/ As was the case with the first cooperative gasoline survey, reports were received for some areas from only one company and in other areas from two companies that did not in all instances report on the same brands of gasoline. In still other areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline. Thus, it can be seen that data on gasolines are unequal in regard, to the number of reports that were averaged in calculating the data shown in table 1. The data from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before submission and are published exactly as they were submitted.

In recent years the Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Pile industry has seen a substantial increase in the quality control options available to Contractors, Engineers, and Owners. Quality control methods range from the simple, manual techniques that have been used for years to new computerized installation monitoring equipment and nondestructive testing methods. Our ability to monitor and test ACIP piles has grown to such a degree that the industry is struggling to determine how much quality control is enough. This paper reviews the many options available and describes the pros and cons of each. The various nondestructive testing methods, in particular, have been difficult to apply reliably due to misapplications of methods and misinterpretation of the results. ACIP piles have unique properties that require the various nondestructive testing methods available be considered very carefully in determining the method most appropriate for a particular use. Some nondestructive testing methods, as well as automated monitoring equipment, potentially can be applied effectively to increase the level of quality control for ACIP piles. The experience gained on real projects using these new methods, in conjunction with the old procedures, provides valuable information for future applications.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. (8.25 mm.) gage and was rolled as shown in Table 1, in order to get four bars reduced two, four, six, and eight B. & 5. numbers respectively. This second alloy

DURING the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of inter-ruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publi-cations a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, there-fore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.

Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. I would like to expand on these needs.

Longwall tailgates in coal mines are often subject to severe mining induced loading and deformation. Innovative tailgate supports have been developed over the years to provide safe and economical access and a ventilation pathway at the tailgate. The support capacity and yield capabilities of the supports need to be matched to the loading imposed by the surrounding rock mass. The ground response curve can be used to represent the rock mass response to mining and its effect on support systems. The FLAC finite difference code was used to supplement field results by simulating a longwall tailgate and the associated ground response. The ground response curve is developed by modeling tailgate excavations with different internal support pressures and recording the resulting convergence. Ground response curves are developed for two typical longwalls operating in the Pittsburgh seam with weak and strong immediate roof. An additional model is presented in which the effect of weak overburden strata is simulated. The ground response is shown to be significantly affected by the strength of the immediate roof as well as the main roof. The importance of yield capacity of standing support is demonstrated. Gob height and compaction are found to affect the amount of convergence in the tailgate. The potential exists to develop site specific tailgate design curves by combining model results with field observations.

Gold dredging has made such rapid strides of late and there is such a widespread interest in this branch of mining that I venture to contribute a detailed account of the way in which a Keystone driller was used by me in California to loosen, by blasting, a very tight gravel deposit, preparatory to dredging. There is a great difference between “cemented gravel” and “tight gravel.” A truly cemented gravel is not a dredging proposition, while the tightest possible gravel, where there is no cement, can be made easy working by the following method of blasting:

Mining and processing activities which are proposed on private land, state leases, or unpatented mining claims are governed by numerous local, state, and federal laws which identify the procedures and conditions which must be met before resources can be developed. The respective government agencies responsible for the administration and enforcement of these laws have promulgated supporting regulations and guidelines, and have implemented certain permit and approval processes to ensure compliance. Each exploration project has a unique environ- mental setting and location which further dictates the types of air, water, hazardous waste, and wildlife laws and regulations which must be complied with before development commences. The environmental planning process should be the first step in the evaluation of existing company properties and the potential acquisition of other mineral properties. However. many company don't consider the environmental requirements for a project until the decision is made to develop the property for mining and processing. If a mining company wants to expedite the environmental planning process, it must first develop an in-house process for evaluating the project and determining the environmental approval procedures in the state where the project is located. The first stage of environmental planning involves general information which can set the overall company philosophy for development of projects.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. A brief outline covering the shovels and draglines in use in the open-pit mines of Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon, is given, followed by the procedure for the selection of the correct wire rope for each application. Such fa ctors as wire rope constructions, lay directions and types of cores are mentioned. Once the correct wire rope has been selected, there are variousfactors that can affect the service fife ofthe rope and the reduction ofdown-time during rope change-overs. Factors such as hairpin winding, types of Becket loops, and shovel drum and bail adaptors are described.

MetPlant conferences have focused on ensuring mining projects are well designed then optimised to operate safely and effectively at the top end of world’s best practice to ensure shareholders are not just happy but delighted. This assumes the MetPlant was built right the first time. However, reality is, too often Plant Metallurgists (PlantMets) find after commissioning they are faced with the expensive task of correcting errors or modifying shortcomings to achieve product quality at name-plate capacity, i.e. get it right the second time. Why do companies spend good money to engineer an excellent feasibility study then allow “wise men” remote from the project team to impose cuts in budget and schedule, often under the guise of value engineering? Since mining is full of uncertainties, such actions can increase the risks of failure with the result that some MetPlants do not work well. Can PlantMets influence the remote wise men who often are also imposing the rules for lending and the required returns to appreciate the uncertainties of mining and their associated risks then let the project team get it right the first time? PlantMets can negotiate with the wise men from the outset of the project and bring them into an outer layer of the team where they can understand the risks then share responsibility and accountability to achieve the common goal of building a MetPlant which works well the first time and deliver the forecast profits. Since shareholders are not in the business to make losses they appoint a Board of Directors to deliver the best outcomes for the shareholders. Thus the Board should seek effective advice on the risk reward implications from the PlantMet before making their decisions.CITATION:Cameron, P, 2015. Do all metplants work well? The formation of bainite in steel is dependent on the size of the casting, the heat treatment, and the alloying elements. It is difficult to obtain a fully bainitic microstructure in steels during heat treatment because of its close proximity to the martensite (a?) reaction. The ferrite (a) and pearlite reactions in steels are also rapid and shield the bainite reaction. Alloying elements therefore need to be added to separate the bainite reaction. Boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) are key elements added to bainitic steels because of their ability to retard the a reaction. Other elements used in the production of bainitic steels are silicon (Si), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and titanium (Ti). In this paper we investigate the effect of alloying elements on the bainite reaction through the use of dilatometry. Dilatometry is a technique that determines phase transformations in the steel and through which continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curves can then be developed. Some initial results are presented of an ongoing study on the development of bainitic steels for railway wheel applications.

The challenge; to design production facilities and in particular separation equipment which have the ability to deal effectively with the ever changing composition of well fluids, over the life time of the field in which it is operating, ensuring maximum uptime of the asset coupled with consistently effective separation. Design engineers are, however, continually confronted with a dilemma when selecting materials of construction for Oil/Gas separation equipment, since they are generally obliged to select an acceptable material of construction, based on ?predicted? operating conditions, at the lowest acceptable cost. Consequently many designs are somewhat basic and do not take into account the constantly varying dynamics of the well fluids being released into the separator. As oil fields mature, oil companies endeavour to maximize revenue by maintaining oil and gas throughputs. This often results in an associated increase in water and sand volumes and, in order to maintain efficient separation, an increase in operational temperature and pressure; subjecting the equipment to operational conditions for which it was never designed. In reality, therefore, the limitations and constraints placed upon new construction design often result in Maintenance Engineers having to solve the ensuing problems in difficult ?in-field? environments. Should refurbishment or upgrade be required then the status of the platform and that of the vessel during shutdown will dictate how this is achieved. Hotwork on the vessel is generally not preferred due to the requirement for post weld heat treatment and re-classification of the pressure vessel, not to mention the added risk in terms of safety. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been few alternatives to conventional ?hotwork? repair and protection systems, especially since the performance of cold curing polymer based repair and coating systems, for use in oil and gas process equipment, has, until recently, been limited by their resistance to temperature and pressure in immersed conditions. In line with the continued development of high temperature / high pressure oil and gas fields however, recent breakthroughs in polymer technology can now offer both repair and protection solutions which are able to function effectively at temperatures up to 180°C in immersed conditions combined with resistance to the destructive forces of explosive decompression from pressures in excess of 90 bar. This paper will look at recent work that has been undertaken to determine the suitability of modern polymer based repair and protection systems as an alternative to hotwork; thus enabling newly designed and upgraded internals to be cold bonded into position and further protected with temperature resistant coatings, in order to minimize the downtime of the asset and further to protect the vessel internals from the Erosive Corrosive environment.

One of the more difficult topics to address concerns the effects of vibration on historic structures. Not only blast induced vibration, but also vibration from other transient and semi-continuous sources like, traffic, human activity, and environment forces. A common question might be, “What level of blast-re l a ted PPV is considered safe?” A review of some of the papers available from the ISEE Explosives Reference Database on CD ROM shows that 0.50 inch per second was often used. It was not clear on what basis this value was selected except that it represents the low frequency limit for plaster developed by the United States Bureau of Mines in RI 8507. In another case, a limit of 0.20 inch per second was mentioned, apparently simply because it was ten times less than 2.00 inches per second.

The importance of the heavy mineral sands to southern African economic well-being cannot be over emphasized. The value of the worldwide titanium dioxide industry is estimated at $7 billion. Six out of eight of the world?s proposed new project areas are in southern and eastern Africa, and a seventh at Tamil Nadu in India is partly owned by a South African company, Kumba Resources. The HMS industry can be highly lucrative; its return on capital is the best in the mining industry. There are, however, problems, particularly in the smelting technology. The often considerable affect of mining on environmentally sensitive coastal dunes is also becoming increasingly important. The medium-to long-term demand for Ti-dioxide pigment and ceramic grade zircon appears very healthy. If, as predicted, the costs of producing titanium metal can be reduced, then there is huge potential for the metal. In summary, the HMS industry is an attractive one to be in, with good returns and generally manageable risks. New business opportunities and their economic implications for Africa are discussed.
