The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

In the paper a numerical modeling method is used for evaluation of a roof support system, which is commonly used in the US coal industry. The effectiveness of mechanical roof bolting with or without, header boards and steel straps are compared. This analysis takes into account the response of a shaly roof to changing environmental conditions in mines related to the seasonal changes in temperature and humidity of the intake air. Discussed are principles of roof support in coal mines and based on them a critical evaluation of header boards interaction with bolts and roof itself is carried out. Header boards create a soft inclusion within a much more stiffer system comprising bolt-rock. As an alternative to header boards, steel straps are analysed and corresponding results are presented. It is demonstrated that application of steel strap is beneficial from the stand point of stress distribution and maintaining tension on roof bolts. The laboratory investigations and modeling work previously undertaken by the authors, clearly indicate the detrimental effect of header boards on effectiveness of roof bolting. There are significant practical implications of the research considering that header boards are commonly used in mines. This practice has been probably originated from the wooden support used by mining in "pre-bolting era?, and it has stayed with coal mining based on tradition more than principles of engineering design. It is demonstrated that header board$ are detrimental and actually contribute to development of roof problems.

A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

"Abstract - The NICO and Sue-Dianne deposits are being explored and delineated by Fortune Minerals Limited in the Mazenod Lake District of the Northwest Territories, using an Olympic Dam model. The deposits were discovered in the south part of the Great Bear magmatic zone (GBMZ) within the Proterozoic, Bear Structural Province of the Canadian Shield. They are the only known significant Canadian examples of Proterozoic iron oxide-hosted polymetallic deposits. Worldwide, this class includes such deposits as Olympic Dam and Ernest Henry in Australia, Kiruna-Aitik in Sweden, and Salobo in Brazil. Their considerable size, up to 2 billion tonnes, and polymetallic ore assemblages make them highly attractive targets for exploration. Common characteristics of this class include their Early to Middle Proterozoic cratonic settings with extensional rifting evolving from collisional tectonics. Deposits typically occur along major structural lineaments within the aureoles of a distinctive suite of anorogenic potassium-rich "A-type" granite intrusions. Although hosted by diverse lithologies, deposits of this class are characterized by a number of other diagnostic regional- and deposit-scale features, which may be recognized in reconnaissance- and propertyscale geological and geophysical surveys.The southern GBMZ in Canada has several characteristics (age, tectonic setting, geology and geophysical attributes) similar to those of the Olympic Dam deposit and its other significant global analogues. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys carried out in the GBMZ identified coincident potassium, uranium, magnetic, resistivity, chargeability, and gravity anomalies centered over the NICO deposit. The nearby Sue-Dianne deposit is characterized by coincident uranium, potassium, magnetic, resistivity and chargeability anomalies. Both deposits occur within a regional, northweststriking, arcuate trend of volcanic and sedimentary rocks characterized by significant positive Bouguer-gravity and magnetic responses and are believed to represent a major basement discontinuity. The NICO anomalies are at the intersection of this regional trend with a major transverse fault through Lou Lake. Regional and local geophysical data indicate the presence of significant concentrations of iron oxide within a broad area of intense potassium metasomatism. Geological mapping identified cobalt, gold, bismuth, and copper mineralization in biotite-magnetite-amphibole-sulfiderich ironstone and schist. This mineralization is localized within altered wackes of the Snare Group, which are unconformably overlain by potassium feldspar- (±hematite ±magnetite) altered rhyolite of the Faber Group. The Sue-Dianne deposit is a hematite-magnetite-Fe-silicate-cemented diatreme complex enriched in copper, silver, gold, and uranium within a broad zone of potassium, iron, quartz, and epidote metasomatism. The diatreme is located at the intersection of two major faults at the north end of the basement discontinuity and is hosted in rhyodacite ignimbrite marginal to the Faber Lake rapakivi-granite pluton. At both deposits, diatreme- and maar-facies iron oxide-cemented breccia straddle the regional metasedimentary-volcanic unconformity, suggesting that mineralization formed in a near-surface environment synchronous with the onset of volcanism."

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”

This study was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine whether the sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans could use sulfur compounds to produce sulfuric acid in sufficient quantities to leach valuable metals from low-grade ores. The results of extended tests indicated that the bacterium is capable of extracting appreciable amounts of copper and cobalt from ore and mineral samples when sulfur is available in a state that can be readily assimilated by the organisms. Under the conditions of these tests, this organism was not able to assimilate and oxidize the sulfur as it occurred in the ores and minerals. Ores containing copper minerals in the silicate, carbonate, and oxide forms, in the presence of elemental sulfur, were more susceptible to bacterial action than ores containing copper minerals in the sulfide form. Thiobacillus thiooxidans remained active on elemental sulfur in the presence of some of the ores which were tested, but could not tolerate others. Therefore, strains of the bacterium were progressively adjusted to increasing concentrations (0.5 to 10 grams) of the individual ores until they could remain active on 10-gram portions of all ores being tested.

Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. This paper is concerned with subsidence prediction methods and in particular with two techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. In more detail, the hyperbolic tangent profile function, as developed by VPI&SU from field data pertaining to the eastern U.S. coalfields, and an influence function method currently being adapted for the same region, are presented and discussed. The applicability, advantages and limitations of these techniques are examined and comparisons are presented with field measurements. Computer software developed for the application of these prediction methods, for two widely used personal computer systems, are also discussed and a number of examples are presented demonstrating the potential of such programs.

THE use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material :st be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, nulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, butt to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits.

A blast plan will cover the basic elements of shot design: hole diameter, spacing, burden, loading, and so forth. This report, summarizing the Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and coal products for the period July 1, 1950, to July 1, 1951, is based largely on publications issued during the year. The sixteenth in an annual series, it gives footnote references to publications giving further details of the research and technologic work described, except in a few cases where research data presented herein has not been published previously. During the year, the national fuels situation was generally one of plentiful supply.3/ Mineral-fuel resources appeared adequate for several hundred years at reasonably increasing rates of supply. Coal-production capacity was in excess of demand; petroleum supplies were adequate; and natural gas use was limited only by pipeline capacity. However, it was pointed out that a world war would drastically change this situation of relative plenty, particularly with regard to supplies of petroleum and its products. Conversion to the use of coal on a large scale would be required, and improved methods of mining and of processing and using coal in solid or fluidized form or converted to liquid fuels could materially contribute to our national safety.

Electrochemical, chemical, and image analysis techniques were utilized together with statistical analysis methods to determine the effect of various anode impurities on copper electrorefining performance. Results indicate that arsenic is a beneficial anode impurity. Anode lead and sulfur are shown to decrease electrorefining performance. Specific emphasis is given to the influence of individual elements on current efficiency, slime particle generation, and cell voltage parameters.

The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. "This paper discusses how to effectively conduct energy efficiency studies during the design of new mineral processing plants and plant expansions. Energy management studies for new plants are ideally conducted as part of the feasibility study, but can also be done at the detailed design stage prior to the purchasing of equipment. Energy management engineers work as part of the mineral processing plant design team.Such studies usually result in energy savings of approximately 3-8% of the predicted plant’s energy consumption and energy demand. Potential cost savings can be significant. A variety of mineral processing systems – crushing/grinding, pumping, materials handling, fans/blowers, compressed air, and others – are assessed within this study.Energy Management Information System (EMIS) studies can also be performed for the new plant or plant expansion, as an independent study. EMIS can be incorporated into the electrical and controls design of the plant.Most Canadian Utility companies fund new plant design studies and provide financial incentives based on the predicted energy savings and incremental cost of the more energy-efficient design. A new plant energy efficiency study improves the potential for energy reduction because only the incremental equipment cost is included in the project return-on-investment calculation. After the design and construction phases, energy efficiency projects must justify the entire cost of the upgrade, which is significantly higher than the incremental cost alone.This paper outlines the major steps of a new plant/plant expansion energy efficiency study, the available utility company incentives, and the areas yielding the largest potential energy savings.IntroductionThis paper discusses energy efficiency studies and energy management systems with regards to mining operations. Energy management refers to the systems of monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing energy usage within a facility. It includes energy efficiency optimization of the initial plant design as well as the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) and Energy Management Information System (EMIS) for optimizing energy usage over the lifetime of the facility. An EnMS is the organizational framework and procedures for managing energy use; an EMIS is the system of monitoring, reporting, and tracking process energy use against targets."

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the quantitative procedures that have been developed for the mine-specific analyses of accident/injury experience data are presented and their applications are demonstrated in a summary form through case study examples. The quantitative procedures will aid mine safety management personnel to develop focused accident prevention strategies including training, as well as to justify the investment in such proactive programs through cost-benefit analyses.

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. El presente texto aborda el aspecto termodinámico del sistema de lixiviación -en tanto predice los fenómenos que ocurren en el interior de la pila para luego continuar con el análisis del mecanismo cinético. La metodología aplicada en cuanto a los mecanismos de lixiviación, difiere de otros trabajos porque aquí se considera los tres mecanismos por separado (óxidos, sulfuros secundarios y primarios) basados en el análisis secuencial del cobre. Asímismo la cinética per se obedece las leyes de la termodinámica ergo, cuyo aspecto no puede ser ignorado en un análisis global. En este sentido, se presenta el modelo de desarrollo matemático como una herramienta óptima que controla y predice este proceso del lixiviación por medio de la simulación utilizando la ecuación de continuidad, la cual supone flujo tipo pistón de la fase líquida en el interior de la pila.

Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.
