This Bureau of Mines report investigates shield mechanics by describing the elastic response and interaction of shield components to applied vertical and horizontal displacements for various canopy and base contact configurations. This research provides information on generalized shield mechanics, which is applicable in describing the behavior of all two-leg shield supports. Utilizing mechanics of materials concepts and known kinematic relationships for two-leg shield supports, free-body diagrams are constructed for each shield component illustrating internal axial, shear, and bending moment responses required to maintain equilibrium for each load case evaluated. Predicted shield (component) responses are verified by controlled displacement of instrumented longwall shields in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS). Conclusions drawn from these analyses include shield structural responses are significantly dependent upon canopy and base contact configurations. Applied displacements also significantly affect shield responses. Horizontal displacement produces different responses than those produced by vertical displacements. The direction of horizontal displacement is also significant in evaluating shield response. Applications of shield mechanics to in situ support monitoring are also discussed. An objective of this research program is to establish unique shield responses to identify in situ load conditions.

Mine # 8 of Pindingshan Coal Group, Henan Province, China has an annual production 2 million metric tons. But it encounters many problems, e.g. mine layout is complicated, roadway maintenance is difficult, coal and gas outbursts are severe, production cost is high, etc. The major reason was due to the additive effects of abutment pressure interaction of previous mining in D, E, and F seams. At the request of mine management, an in-depth systematic analysis including underground observation, modeling with simulated materials, and photoelastic experimentation was performed to obtain site-specific results which include the dynamic and static influence zones of mining D, E, and F seams, propagation characteristics of abutment pressure in the floor strata, interburden movement caused by undermining, etc.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo o uso de modelos termodinâmicos da literatura e termodinâmica computacional no estudo de dessulfuração de ferro-gusa através de misturas CaO-Fluorita e CaO-Sodalita. As experiências foram realizadas com a adição de diferentes misturas destes sistemas em ferro-gusa a uma temperatura de 1400°C. Os resultados dos testes foram analisados e comparados com os obtidos pelos modelos termodinâmicos da literatura e o software de termodinâmica computacional ThermoCalc. Através dos modelos da literatura foram calculados basicidade óptica, capacidade de sulfeto (Cs) e partição de enxofre (Ls). Pelo software ThermoCalc foram calculados o teor de enxofre de equilíbrio no metal, fases sólidas, e a quantidade de líquido em cada uma das misturas dessulfurantes utilizadas no processo a uma temperatura de 1.400ºC. O ThermoCalc mostrou-se mais preciso que os modelo da literatura na análise da capacidade de dessulfuração das misturas utilizadas neste trabalho.

BETWEEN the third and twentieth days of November, 1903, six intensely interesting letters were mailed from Santiago, Chile, addressed to "Mr. William Braden, Consulting Mining Engineer, 71 Broadway, New York City." The subject of these communications, referred to as the "Rancagua mines," was a copper property situated in the high. Andes; and the writer was Marco Chiapponi, an Italian mining engineer. Many a letter has been written about potential mines and prospects, good and bad, situated in all parts of the world; but few of them combine the shrewdness, sincerity, naïveté, and salesmanship that appear in these fascinating letters by Chiapponi. In 1894, Mr. Braden, as a young man twenty-three years old, had gone to Santiago to look after the erection and operation of some mining machinery that was to be exhibited at the International Mining Exposition. Not the least important of his purposes was to get acquainted at first hand with the mines and mining men of Chile, which ranked at the time (as it does today) second to the United States as a copper-producing country. It happened that a dispute arose regarding charges for certain construction work done in connection with young Braden's exhibit. Finally, arbitration was agreed upon and the Chilean exposition officials proposed Se[n]or Marco Chiapponi as a fair-minded neutral to decide the question. This he did in a manner satisfactory to both sides, and subsequently he and Mr. Braden became good friends. Nine years later Braden wrote to Chiapponi inquiring as to certain matters connected with the Corocoro copper mines in Bolivia. It was to this letter that Chiapponi refers in his letter of November 3, from which the following are some extracts,

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

This paper is intended to describe the utilization of Western subbituminous coal as used in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares this coal's characteristics with those of a typical Midwestern and Eastern coal as a base and reviews the various design considerations when blends of these coals are used. The effects of blending various low-sulfur Western coals with Midwestern or Eastern coals to achieve a predetermined sulfur dioxide emission and the resulting alteration in the coal characteristics as they apply to utilization are also reviewed. The blending of coals as one means of complying with sulfur dioxide regulations will take on increasing importance as the various deadlines for compliance with new and existing regulations approach. We must first consider the availability of these low-sulfur coals; and insofar as the Eastern low-sulfur coals have been mined for many years, we have focused our attention on the availability of the coal reserves west of the Mississippi River in the United States, as this is the area to which many people are turning in order to meet this requirement.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.

Sedimento II oceanographic cruise, on board of the B/O El Puma, shows a new high anomaly or phosphate associated with shelf sediments from the south Mexican Pacific. Recently, were found two anomalies in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, that are located to the east of this new anomaly, that is related to muddy sands and rock fragment debris. The latter shows values of 17% P205. The phosphate occurrence is probably associated with red tides locations that usually are found in sites where sediments are phosphates enriched. These findings suggest that south Mexican Pacific is of potential interest for P205, in waters with high nutrients values. The possibility of a more regional occurrence of phosphate, from California to Chile is suggested.

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the possibility of using the heap leaching process for treating the gold ores in the sedimentary beds of northeastern Nevada. This paper summarizes all available information on the technical and economic feasibility of heap leaching oxidized ores from these beds, past industry application of vat leaching, results of recent Bureau of Mines and industry tests on heap leaching ores from this region, and requirements for planning the proper application of heap leaching. Preliminary tests on representative samples of ores from the region show that a satisfactory recovery of gold can be obtained by heap leaching the ores with cyanide at a relatively coarse size. Significant deposits of gold ore occur in sedimentary beds of various locations over an extended area 40 miles wide and 200 miles long in northeastern Nevada. The area is centered 40 miles west of and runs parallel to the leading edge of the Roberts Mountain thrust fault system, a prominent geologic feature in the area. The nature of solid solutions of sodium in non-paphitic carbon at temperatures near 1000°C has been investigated by an electrolytic technique. The activity coefficient is found to vary strongly with the heat-treatment temperature of the carbon, and an analysis of the energy terms involved suggests that this is due to variations in the Fermi level. The diffusion coefficient for sodium is in the range implying that the sodium atoms (or ions) are not bound to specific sites on the carbon, in agreement with lack of evidence for specific compounds in the activity -composition curves. In the light of These results phenomena occurring in aluminum reduction cell linings are dis-cussed. It is concluded that sodium migrates by diffusion through the carbon lallice and not the pores, and that A14C9 is formed within the lining hy The excess of NaF invariably found in used linings is formed by this reaction and by air oxidation: There has recently been much interest in the swelling of carbon which occurs when it is made cathodic in an aluminum electrolysis cell, and there is general agreement that the phenomenon is due to the penetration of sodium atoms, derived from the reaction on the carbon lattice. (NaF and AlF3 are constituents of the fused-salt electrolyte.) The low-temperature lamellar compounds of potassium with graphite are well-known, and one compound between sodium and graphite has been reported.4 There is, however, virtually no information on the basic chemistry of the interaction of sodium with nongraphitic carbon at high temperatures, although Dell3 has made some fundamental studies of rates of penetration. At the time the present work was carried out these were not available. Rapoport and samoilenkol had measured rates of physical expansion in a dilatometer, using the fractional increase in length of a carbon specimen after electrolysis in a cryolite bath for 2 hr as an index of susceptibility to cathodic swelling. Work here with a similar apparatus showed that expansion (of a 1.5-in.-diam cylindrical specimen) ceased in less than 20 hr, and that the final expansion was much more reproducible than the value at some intermediate time. This suggested that an equilibrium was being set up, and that a thermodynamic approach was required. The results obtained are not as accurate as had been hoped, but they are the only ones of their type available and have enabled useful conclusions to be drawn. The experimental work was divided into two parts: an investigation of the activity-concentration diagram for sodium in carbon, and a rough determination of the diffusion rate. For the former, most of the experiments were made with petroleum coke even though this is not a form of carbon used in cell linings. It has the advantages, however, that it is a homogeneous material, that it is low in ash, and that its structure is reasonably well understood. Anthracites and coal cokes gave results of the same type as obtained with petroleum coke, but the reprodu-cibility from specimen to specimen was extremely poor. EXPERIMENTAL 1) The Activity-Composition Diagram for Sodium in Carbon. The petroleum coke was ground, pressed at 40,000 psi into plates 19 by 9 by 2 mm without added binder, and heat-treated. The sodium activities were established by an electrolytic technique. The carbon was made anodic in a cryolite bath with an aluminum cathode, and a controlled potential, E, applied so that the sodium activity at the anode was given by ln Na = 1n asa - EF/RT [21 where as, is the sodium activity generated by Reaction [I]. ABSTRACT; his paper proposes new methodology to define the pit limits that yield the maximum net present value (NPV) for a deposit, under a given economic scenario and for a given discount rate. The method uses an algorithm that combines dynamic programming and heuristics. It was tested for evaluating deposits with different sizes and various grade distributions. For the discount rate of zero, the results confirm that the economic pit limits are the same as that defined using Lerchs Grossman method. However, when discount rates higher than zero are used, the pit limits differ, yielding a higher NPV.

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components. Despite regulations and efforts by government and industry to reduce noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), it is still a problem in the U.S. coal mining industry. The Mine Safety and Health Administration noise standard (30 CFR3 62), which was enacted in September 2000, is aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. To address NIHL in various aspects of coal mining and provide the necessary information to effectively implement control technologies, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures. Noise surveys consisting of full-shift worker noise exposure (dose) determination, time-motion studies (task observations), and equipment and/or area noise profiling were completed in 8 underground coal mines, 10 surface coal mines, and 8 coal preparation plants. The studies revealed that more than 40% of all workers monitored were subject to noise exposures above 90 dBA TWA8. A summary of these studies is presented, their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed, and exposure reduction methods are reviewed.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. The Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive studies on the recovery of alumina from kaolinitic clay by a HCI leaching-HCI sparging process. The current study reports a modification of the process, which involves a double-leaching system. The first leach of the calcined clay is made at as high a HCI acid strength as possible so that the dissolution of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCI3*6H20) is suppressed, Most of the impurities, but very little aluminum, are soluble in the strong acid. After liquid-solid separation and washing, the solids are leached with recycled weak HCI, which dissolves the AICI3'6H2O. The pregnant liquor is separated from the gangue, and AICI3'6H2O is crystallized from solu-tion by injecting HCI gas. A proposed flowsheet is presented, and the effect of bleedstream size on AlC13'6H20 purity is discussed.

One of the primary goals of Bureau of Mines research is to reduce the cost of coal mining by improving the efficiency of longwall supports. One method of achieving this goal is the optimization of stress distribution within the support structure, resulting in a lower overall weight, more fully stressed shield. However, before stress optimization can be initiated, load conditions must be defined that cause maximum stress in the various support components. A finite-element model of a longwall shield was used to identify these critical load conditions. These load conditions were then evaluated in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS) by instrumentation of a longwall shield and measurement of strains in each of the shield components. The critical (canopy-base contact) load conditions were identified that can cause structural failure at less than rated shield (hydraulic yield) capacity. Comparisons were made between full-contact and partial-contact load conditions. Other parameters investigated included the stiffness of the contact material, changes in shield geometry, rate of load application, and effects of horizontal constraint. Conclusions were drawn regarding the structural integrity of the major shield components and potential for stress optimization.

One of the difficulties for many young engineers is the acceptance of responsibility. Even though they start as assistants to older men, they hesitate to offer positive opinions. They often make reports of observations and leave the boss to draw his own conclusions. If they happen to be in a position where they are not reporting to a senior engineer, and it is necessary to take the final responsibility for a decision, they try to get someone to help out and either assume or share such responsibility. Generally this is the result of want of confidence in one's self and fear that something may happen to go wrong and bring about criticism. Frequently diffidence is the principal factor. Young men come to me with reports on work that has been well done and well written up, who are evidently laboring under an intense desire to drop through the floor or to make a rapid' exit in some other way because of want of confidence. In my own early experience a consulting job came in that required considerable investigation. The man who was handing his place over to me mentioned my good fortune and I replied that the work would be interesting and I could handle it all right but feared the responsibility, which seemed considerable.
