In low carbon TRIP steels, the formation of carbide-free bainitic ferrite is crucial for the stabilization of austenite. Based on experimental investigations modeling the bainite reaction is examined adopting diffusional and displacive mechanisms, as well as the semi-empirical JMAK approach. Transformation tests were carried out to study the isothermal austenite decomposition into bainitic ferrite for a model steel containing 0.6wt%C, 1.5wt%Mm and 1.5wt%Si which replicates the composition of remaining austenite at the start of the bainite reaction in a classical C-Mn-Si TRIP steel. In the diffusional approach, classical nucleation theory is employed and subsequent growth of bainite plates is modeled using the Zener-Hillert theory. In the displacive approach, the autocatalytic nucleation of bairtite plates is assumed to be rate controlling. The predictive capability of all models is evaluated for temperature ranges where different morphologies of bainitic ferrite have been detected, The shortcomings and inherent challenges associated with either of these modeling approaches will be delineated.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

Two general schemes have been used for the determination of gold and silver in material containing considerable quantities of copper ; one is known as the " all fire " method , and the other as the , " combination " , or " wet and dry" method . The all fire crucible method , using an excess charge of litharge , has been found satisfactory when the copper content of an ore is under 6 per cent , ( Loevy , J. , Zur Edelmetallbestimmung in hochprozentigen Kupfererzen : Chem. Ztg . Jarhrg . 35 , 1911 , p . 278 ) , or where the precious metal value is so great that a small sample can be used . In the latter case , silica is added until the copper ratio is sufficiently low . If there is more than 6 per cent of copper in an ore , the lead button obtained from a crucible fusion will require repeated scorification before . it can be cupelled successfully . Rescorification is not only tedious , but also causes a slag loss of precious metals . In combination methods , the copper is dissolved , and the gold and silver in the residue . is determined by fire assay Although some combination methods have given satisfactory results for gold and silver , they are not applicable when an estimation of the platinum metals is required . Since substances containing platinum are frequently high in copper , a study of methods which might be used for the estimation of small quantities of gold , silver , and the platinum metals in such material was considered worth while . The estimation of platinum in ores by fire assay methods has been described in Technical Paper 270 of the bureau; ( Davis , C.W. , The detection and estimation of platinum in ores : U. S. Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 270 , 1921. ) the present paper , which is supplementary to that report , deals chiefly with the application of combination methods , taking them up to the point where the fire assay is to be applied .

Em virtude da periculosidade do Pó de aciaria (PAE), práticas alternativas, como a reinserção do resíduo no processo produtivo, ou sua incorporação em outros materiais fizeram com que a reciclagem tenha se tornado uma via para este subproduto. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as áreas de desenvolvimento tecnológico de utilização do PAE, avaliar a potencialidade de reaproveitamento e reciclagem do resíduo oriundo do processo de produção do aço carbono, comparando as características obtidas do PAE analisado com os requisitos indicados através da análise de patentes. O PAE produzido no estado de Pernambuco foi caracterizado pelas técnicas de Fluorescência de raios X (FRX), separação granulométrica via peneiramento, distribuição do tamanho de partículas, Difração de raios X (DRX), Microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (EDS). A prospecção tecnológica foi realizada nas bases de patentes europeia EPO e na base nacional de patentes nacional do INPI. As análises realizadas mostraram que o material apresentou aproximadamente 28,5% de suas partículas com granulometria inferior a 53μm, composto em sua maioria por ferro e zinco presentes na forma de óxidos, organizados nas fases franklinita, zincita e magnetita. A baixa granulometria e composição química possibilitam a sua aplicação no campo dos materiais cerâmicos, bem como sua reinserção no processo de fabricação. O resíduo estudado apresentou características similares com os demais resíduos observados nas patentes.

C. Hertzler The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observing a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich II, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69 % Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86 % should be 98.6 %. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness. Miller After reading Ms. Hertzler's comments, it appears that the differences noted were basically semantics. If the paper is ever presented at a math symposium, some changes will be needed. When deciding the best way to present the data to mining engineers and geologists, I decided that presenting the probability that the two sample groupings came from different populations (reverse to the Null hypothesis) was easier and would require less verbage to explain. Hence, the 100(1 - p) difference which was noted. Ideally, I would have preferred to give the recovery and concentrate grades, then comment which ones had significant differences. Unfortunately, Kennecott Corp. did not grant permission to publish the ore body's actual recoveries and concentrate grades. The conclusion is that there was, as expected, a relationship between the ore's geologic properties and the metallurgical properties, and by determining this relationship, the overall mineral model was greatly improved.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

The oxygen bottom blown copper smelting process is a new technology which has been widely applied to the copper production in China. In this work, a computational thermodynamics model for this technology has been established, based on smelting mechanism and theory of Gibbs free energy minimization. The calculated results from the model agree well with the actual industrial data, indicating that the model can be used for the predictions under different operating conditions. The tendencies of the key parameters (such as Cu losses and Fe3O4 content in slag) and the distribution ratios of the minor elements (such as Pb, Zn, As, Sb and Bi) can be predicted by adjusting the oxygen/ore ratio charged into the bottom blown copper smelting furnace. The model can be used to monitor and optimize the industrial operations of the oxygen bottom blown copper smelting process.

"Revision surgery to replace joints in the human body requires materials that are strong, long-lasting, and biocompatible. Metallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an on-going effort to economically improve their performance. Alloying with inert nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, enhance its corrosion resistance, and elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, without increasing the threat to the human body. The current work has produced a high-nitrogen Co-Cr-Mo alloy through HIP consolidation of metal powders that have undergone nitriding in a mechanically fluidized bed. The already fine microstructure of the powders combined with the increased nitrogen content resulted in significant property gains in the consolidated materials.IntroductionMetallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an ongoing effort to improve their performance. Research on a Stellite 21 cobalt-chromiummolybdenum alloy has shown that nitrogen alloying can be desirable from several standpoints [l]. Firstly, it has indicated that nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, which could allow more demanding implant designs. The same work also demonstrated that nitrogen can elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, which is desirable in situations in which surface textures are to be sintered to the implant to enhance its fixation properties. Finally, that research work discovered that, not only does nitrogen not harm the corrosion resistance of the cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys, but it may in fact enhance it. Combining this with the fact that small amounts of nitrogen are not considered a threat to the human body, makes nitrogen alloying an attractive alternative for enhancing the properties of Co-Cr-Mo."

Particle mixtures were sampled in the laboratory, using ordinary sampling procedures, to determine whether or not the compound-multinomial probability distribution and other developments of part 2 agreed with experimental results. The objective was accomplished by the Bureau of Mines by comparing the moments and moment relationships of the appropriate probability models with their corresponding experimental values over a fairly wide range. The overall agreement between the corresponding theoretical and experimental values is both good and complete. The results demonstrate that sampling to a constant amount, such as weight, of items per sample is not the same, in general, as sampling to some constant number of items per sample. The results seem to confirm all the developments of part 2 and the application of the compound-multinomial function to bulk sampling.

The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was the first American technical organization to consider steel-rail specifications and sections. If I am not mistaken, the first contribution on those subjects to the Proceedings of the Institute was presented by Prof. Thomas Egleston, in 1874, and was entitled "Investigations on Iron and Steel Rails made in Europe in the Year 1873.1" The next contribution was Dr. C. B. Dudley's report of his investigation for the Pennsylvania Railroad of the wear of steel rails in their tracks, in 1878, which contribution led to a very memorable discussion that extended through several meetings.2 In 1880, Mr. C. P. Sandberg3 presented an article on rail specifications and inspection and rail sections. This was followed, in 1881, by A. L. Holley,4 in his exhaustive report on the then used American rail sections. The next contribution, I believe, was made by myself5 at the Buffalo meeting, in 1888, on steel-rail specifications, which I followed,6 in 1889, by a paper on steel-rail sections. Since that time there have been numerous contributions to the Transactions of the Institute in relation to the manufacture of steel rails. The American Society of Civil Engineers officially took up the investigation of the relation of rail sections to the wear of car wheels in 1888. In the prosecution of this work, the Society appointed a special committee, whose labors extended through several years and resulted in an exhaustive report to the Society in 1893.7 Later, another committee was appointed to consider specifications for the manufacture of steel rails; the labors of this committee extended over a period of several years, a final reporta being made in 1910. It was my fortune to be the secretary of both of those committees. The American Society for Testing Materials, organized in 1899, took up the consideration of rail specifications and is still giving attention to that subject through its established procedure of investigations by committees. Recently in Germany, novel artificial humus in combination with water-storing hydrogels has successfully been tested as soil improving material in pot experiments. The novel artificial humus (NOVIHUM®) is derived from lignite through oxidative ammonolysis. The product contains c. 5.5% nitrogen. Using NOVIHUM® as fertiliser, variable amounts of the contained nitrogen are gradually available to the plant, depending on the hydrolysis rates of the different N-compounds. NOVIHUM® is a unique combination of long-term fertiliser and stable humus. The tested hydrogel is a polyacrylate/poly-amide copolymer, which is able to improve the water holding capacity of the soil and to retard significantly desiccation. In May 2000, in Germany (Aue region), an experimental site was set up under extremely difficult growing conditions for trees (Quercus petraea) on a uranium spoil pile of the mining company WISMUT Ltd. The oak plots treated with NOVIHUM® and hydrogel showed increased total increment-values, which mainly are the result of the second growth phase. Obviously, these plants profit from the favourable physical parameters of the substrate and the use of the novel artificial humus as nitrogen source. The oak trees can better use the plant-available NH4-nitrogen released from the artificial humus during the planting year. In Greece, an experiment was set up in December 2000 aiming to the afforestation (Pinus nigra, Abies cephalonica) of a bauxite spoil pile of SILVER & BARYTE ORES MINING Co. S.A., on the Parnassus Mountain. The scope was to demonstrate, that the above soil improving materials are also appropriate for the recultivation of sites under extreme climatic and orographic conditions. The first results revealed, that where NOVIHUM® and hydrogel were combined, plant growth was greater than the average. The one-year results of the experiments fulfil our expectations concerning the application of NOVIHUM® in combination with hydrogel for the afforestation of problematic sites, such as the south-exposed steep slopes of the spoil piles of uranium mining. They may represent the most detrimental sites for afforestation in Europe.

We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. For single-row shots, the delay between holes in a row is used; for multiple-row shots, the delay between holes In a row is kept constant and the delay between rows is incremented. A. A. CENTER*—This paper reminds me of the beginning of the work of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia. Early work for this Company, as some of you may know, was done at the Bully Hill Plant in California. After working there for some time Herbert Gepp, now Sir Herbert, came to the Anaconda Co. plants in Montana where I met him. He spent some months there, in fact almost a year if I remember rightly. That was when we were breaking in the new electrolytic zinc plant at Great Falls, Montana. From there he went back to Australia and started in on the plant there. I believe they had an original plant of about 20 tons per day of cathode zinc. We heard from them for some time, until they were able to go along on their own, and they have done very well ever since as you have heard. A. A. CENTER*—This paper reminds me of the beginning of the work of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia. Early work for this Company, as some of you may know, was done at the Bully Hill Plant in California. After working there for some time Herbert Gepp, now Sir Herbert, came to the Anaconda Co. plants in Montana where I met him. He spent some months there, in fact almost a year if I remember rightly. That was when we were breaking in the new electrolytic zinc plant at Great Falls, Montana. From there he went back to Australia and started in on the plant there. I believe they had an original plant of about 20 tons per day of cathode zinc. We heard from them for some time, until they were able to go along on their own, and they have done very well ever since as you have heard. No atual cenário econômico as siderúrgicas estão buscando cada vez mais a redução dos seus custos para a produção do aço, com o objetivo de manter-se competitiva neste mercado. O custo da manutenção refratária corresponde a um valor expressivo para a produção do aço, portanto trabalhos com objetivos de novas técnicas de manutenção para aumentar a produtividade, fazem com que estes custos sejam reduzidos. A CSN Porto Real é uma filial com vocação para o mercado automobilístico e possui um forno de galvanização. Conforme o plano de manuteção houve a necessidade de troca de todas as chapas de inox do forno da linha de galvanização, pois encontravam-se queimadas e com alto grau de deformação. Esta atividade, por motivo de histórico de execução em um forno vertical, sempre foi realizada com a utilização de um grande volume de andaime e de mão de obra, tendo assim um alto custo para a sua execução. Este trabalho foi fruto do estudo para redução do custo de manutenção com a aplicação da técnica de Alpinismo Industrial para se aumentar a produtividade.

Thiourea solutions can be used as leach liquors to treat gold ores or slimes. It is also efficient to elute resins or strip solvents that were loaded in cyanides solutions. The hydrogen pressure reduction is a practical step to recover gold and silver from leach solutions, and strips and eluates without any destruction of thiourea. It is a critical point because these processes have to consider the recycling of the liquors to be irore economical. The effect of temperature, pressure, acidity, compotation of the solution and the nature of catalysts on pressure reduction by hydrogen were investigated. An electranetallurgical study was? carried out to investigate the mechanism. The composition of the products was studied by different analytical methods. The process shows a good selectivity to precipitate gold and silver in a thiourea solution containing iron and copper. Gold and silver concentrations can be decreased to 0.2 ppm and 0.1 ppm at respectively 70 KPa H2 and 28°C. No decomposition of thiourea was evident during the tests. Metals such as nickel powder or platinum activate the reaction and improve the reduction.
