It is no secret that scarcity of fresh water is an issue that at a global level in the years to come will have a major impact on the business landscape. A number of projects, beyond the mining sector, could remain on paper only due to this. At the same time, this situation is seeing the rise of new business opportunities, such as development of technologies for more efficient usage of water, water recycling, and desalinization of sea water. Despite that most of Chilean mining facilities are located in the driest area of the world, business has developed strongly and actively for more than a century. However, the negative effect on the water reservoirs and the environment is, lately, resulting in the reduction of the authorized water rights. Holding Water Rights for any given volume does not guarantee that the resource will be available when needed. A recent report from the United Nations on global climate change indicates that global warming can be directly related to changes in the natural and human environment. Chile would not be an exception. The reduction in snow levels in the high Andes and reduced rainfall during the so called "Bolivian winter", have directly affected the replenishing of the underground water reservoirs in the lower parts of the valleys, where most of the extraction of the resource takes place. Mining facilities shall be designed to reduce potential environmental effects, using proven technologies, and considering the best practices available. These measures shall constitute a complete structural framework for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the Project. The measures to prevent and mitigate the impacts on the water resources shall be considered during the design stage of a mining project. Current and future mining projects in Chile are conscious that the increasing pressure on the limited water resources is becoming unsustainable, and are already facing the water scarcity and social pressure by implementing sea water desalination plants, including long pressurized pipelines to the mine sites (e.g. Escondida, Candelaria, El Morro, Regalito). This paper presents, in summary, an analysis of the present and potential future scenarios.

Calculations based on data obtained from measurements of smoke from coal-fired powerplants predict that infrared imagers will be useful tools for smoke vision. Infrared imagers operating in the 3-to 5-um spectral region have been evaluated for this purpose. A mine opening 110 meters long was filled with smoke from burning coal, and two men, wearing breathing apparatuses, moved through the smoke to serve as targets. The men were detected and identified at 80 meters.

With the scarcity of fresh potable water on mining sites, particularly those in arid and remote regions, the use of sea water is being contemplated and actually used at a number of mineral concentrators worldwide. The use of sea water, with its associated high dissolved solids content and ionic strength will affect all aspects of processing (e.g. frothing and froth stability, buffering capacity for pH control, solubility of minerals and corrosion of media and equipment). Selective depression of pyrite is more difficult in sea water due to the increased lime addition to achieve a high pH. This results in a reduction in molybdenite recovery. The use of grinding media with various chromium contents and its effect on subsequent Cu and Mo flotation has been investigated in the current study, with both grinding and flotation testing conducted in artificial sea water. Pulp chemistry (pH, Eh and DO) have been logged during grinding, and flotation testing was conducted on subsequent slurries. The flotation results show that the system is remarkably robust and able to cope with wide ranges of pulp chemistry parameters. The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

The most exciting frontier in Ocean Technology is represented by a new class of Marine Bioproducts, the source of which lies in marine microorganisms. The microorganisms include microalgae, bacteria and archaea. These organisms represent very diverse, adaptive life forms and in their metabolic processes use carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, ultraviolet blockers, as well as a wide range of enzymes that are pivotal in the production of new pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical products. These organisms cover a wide spectrum of ocean environments, from the shallow to the deep, from the normal to the extreme. The technological challenge is in the identification of candidate organisms, in the screening for valuable enzymes, and in the industrial production. A whole new range of collecting strategies involving submersibles, ROVs and in situ ocean floor instrumentation is emerging. New non-polluting industrial chemical processes involving the use of photobioreactors and extremophile bioreactors for breeding and monitoring these organisms in neo-farming technology is emerging. The commercial value of these candidate products is immense, as is the range of potential organisms. The dimension of this new industry is global. The Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been established at the University of Hawaii. The vision of MarBEC is to develop a seamless research system stretching from undergraduate education to industry for the purposes of producing valuable marine bioproducts outside of the normal chemical factory production. MarBEC is uniquely and strategically placed in the Pacific to explore, find, and adapt highly bioactive marine micro-organisms found in the tropical ocean. The ventilation systems of coal storage silos are normally capable of rapidly dispersing any accumulations of methane in the atmosphere above the coal pile surface. However, the results of an investigation which is presented in this report show that hazardous concentrations of methane can accumulate within the coal pile. Methane trapped within the coal pile is released into the atmosphere of the loading gallery when coal is discharged from a silo. If the methane released is of a flammable concentration it is necessary to ventilate the gallery to reduce the risk of an ignition. This report proposes a simple test, which, after further investigations may prove to be an effective method to calculate gallery ventilation requirements.

Conventional project valuation techniques, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) method, are more frequently being criticised for the manner in which they consider the interacting effects of uncertainty and project structure (including management flexibility) on project value. Modern asset pricing (MAP; often called ?real options valuation? when applied to the analysis of flexibility) is a more general valuation framework that corrects many of the shortcomings of common valuation methods. Previous mining applications of MAP have tended to treat the ore deposit as a homogenous entity. While useful for demonstration purposes, this is inadequate for practical application in industry. This paper presents a MAP valuation example that allows for the heterogeneous nature of an ore deposit. It shows that deposit structure may increase the complexity of the mine planner?s decision so that results of a standard DCF analysis, or a simple MAP analysis that ignores the details of deposit structure, are misleading. In the example, a management is considering the development of an adjacent low-grade zone while mining operations in a high-grade zone are ongoing. If the low-grade zone is developed before high-grade reserves are exhausted, the proposed development will include both low-grade zone development and a capacity expansion to handle additional low-grade reserve production. If development of these reserves is delayed until the high-grade reserves are depleted, then the low-grade reserves can be developed without a capacity expansion. A typical DCF analysis would reduce the management?s decision problem to three alternatives: 1) continue mining only in the highgrade reserves, 2) immediately develop the low-grade reserves and expand capacity, and 3) delay low-grade zone development until the high-grade reserves are exhausted. The model presented here allows the management to reconsider the development and capacity expansion decision on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably. The model presented here extends the ability of mine planners to describe actual project structure while using the MAP valuation framework that is already noted for its capacity to combine project uncertainty and risk insights with a dynamic project description.

A eletro-obtenção constitui em um importante processo na recuperação dos principais metais produzidos através de processos hidrometalúrgicos (i.e. Cu, Ni, Au, Co, Zn), pois permite a obtenção de depósitos catódicos de elevada pureza a partir de soluções aquosas contendo o metal. O presente trabalho investigou a eletro-obtenção de zinco, a fim de avaliar a influência da gelatina, um aditivo orgânico, na eficiência de corrente e na qualidade do metal depositado no catodo de alumínio. A caracterização dos depósitos de zinco através do MEV revelou que, na presença de concentrações crescentes de gelatina até 40mg/L, houve diminuição da quantidade de poros ocasionados por evolução de hidrogênio na superfície do zinco depositado, contudo, em concentrações de 80mg/L, os poros voltaram a aparecer. Além disso, notou-se que diferentes concentrações de gelatina não alteraram a forma dos cristais de zinco, porém provocaram redução do tamanho de suas plaquetas hexagonais, à medida que a concentração de gelatina aumentou, mostrando efeito de refino de grão, em comparação à solução livre da adição de gelatina.

A piora na qualidade dos minérios de ferro tem levado as empresas a adaptarem seus processos a novas condições de qualidade das matérias-primas, surgindo assim a necessidade de desenvolver estudos que auxiliem as tomadas de decisão. Esse trabalho avaliou a influência da qualidade do sínter e da composição da carga metálica na zona coesiva do alto-forno através dos parâmetros de amolecimento e fusão. A importância de se obter informações sobre a zona coesiva se deve principalmente ao fato de nessa região ocorrer a maior parte da perda de carga no interior do alto-forno. Cinco amostras de sínter de qualidades químicas distintas, produzidas nas sinterizações da CSN (Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional), foram selecionadas e caracterizadas para esse estudo. Os ensaios de Amolecimento e Fusão foram realizados no Centro de Tecnologia de Ferrosos da Vale através de um acordo de cooperação técnica entre as empresas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as técnicas utilizadas são adequadas para avaliação das propriedades em altas temperaturas, fornecendo dados importantes para a interpretação do comportamento da carga metálica no interior do alto-forno, como espessura e posicionamento da zona coesiva, permeabilidade e redutibilidade da carga, indicando assim, a composição da carga metálica de melhor desempenho para o alto-forno.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the U.S. coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise in the future as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations.

Mill tailings from conventional uranium extraction processes contain nearly all of the radium originally in the ore. Such tailings require controlled storage in perpetuity to safeguard the surrounding environment from radioactive contamination. Alternatives to controlled storage of the tailings are (1) removal of the radium from the tailings for separate storage or use or (2) removal of the radium when processing the uranium ore. In laboratory tests conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, radium was leached from tailings using either hydrochloric acid or ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. A hydrochloric acid leaching method was used to extract both radium and uranium from the ore to yield tailings containing less radium than those produced by either conventional sulfuric acid or alkaline leaching processes. From 77 to 94 percent of the radium in mill tailings was concentrated by sedimentation in slime fractions representing nearly 25 weight-percent of the original sample.

"As hydraulic fracturing is forbidden in some countries due to its accompanying environmental pollutions, microwave fracturing was proposed as a substitute technology to enhance coal seam permeability. Its mechanism includes: on the one hand, thermal stress caused by non-uniform microwave heating leads to fracture development in coal body, which increases coal seam permeability for gas; on the other hand, moisture within the coal body that hinders gas desorption and diffusion is removed during this process. To study the effect of moisture content on fracture development under microwave irradiation, high resolution photographs were taken before and after microwave treatment. These photographs were then binarized and skeletonized. Based on the processed photographs, the total area were calculated using ImageJ. The results showed that coal samples with 0% and 25% water saturation have more variation in fracture development as compared to that of samples with 50%, 75% and 100% water saturation. This study can be very useful in gas drainage and gas control in coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source as well as a natural hazard to underground mining (Kurnia, Sasmito, & Mujumdar, 2014; Ranathunga, Perera, & Ranjith, 2014). One of the main goals of mine ventilation is diluting methane and removing underground contaminants (Xu, Huang, Nie, Chalmers, & Yang, 2017). Coalbed methane (CBM) has to be extracted prior and during underground mining to avoid methane outburst and explosion accidents. However, with the increase of mining depth, the coal permeability decreases significantly, which makes it hard to extract the methane (Huang, Xu, Hu, Kizil, & Chen, 2018). To enhance the coal seam permeability, many CBM recovery methods have been applied on-site, such as hydraulic fracturing and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM). However, hydraulic fracturing is restricted due to environmental concerns and ECBM is only suitable for the coal seam with relative large permeability (Bustin, Bustin, Chikatamarla, Downey, & Mansoori, 2016; Huang, Xu, Chen, & Chen, 2018; Huang, Xu, Hu, et al., 2018)."

The "Line of Lade", a generic term by which the great Broken Hill orebodies are collectively known, lies in the County of Yancowinna, New South Wales (NSW) at the south eastern extrenity of the Barrier Ranges. As the township of Broken Hill grew to a city (incidentally it was officially named Willyama but by exerting an enterprising community independence which is still evident today it outplayed officialdom and retained its descriptive name), two major areas of population developed, Broken Hill and South Broken Hill. These two main civic divisions are respectively north west and south east of their dividing line, the surface expression of the orebody. See Fig. 1. The border between the States of NSW and South Australia (SA) is drawn along longitude 1410 East whilst the city of Broken hill's official longitude is 1410 28' 14" East which means it is only 50 km from this political boundary. A latitude of 310 57' 03" South contributes to the harsh climate of high summer temperatures which is not mollified by any significant increase in altitude for Broken Hill is only 300 m above sea level.

"A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."
