The ability to increase and maintain dragline productivity is a key mine driver for the Coal Creek Mine. The Coal Creek Mine is owned by Arch Coal Inc subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal Company; located near Gillette, WY. Coal Creek Mine overburden stripping is primarily accomplished by a BE-1570W walking dragline in combination with cast blasting and dozer assist for bench preparation. The two main variables impacting dragline performance are maintenance reliability and operator skill levels. The mine?s most recent process improvement efforts have focused on its most valuable asset - the operator. Various techniques have been used to reduce variability in the dragline operator?s digging performance. Utilization and communication of operator performance data, statistics, and video reviews have been of great value towards achieving this goal. Operators are given a chance to critique operational tendencies from a third-person point of view, and are also presented statistical feedback to support observations. From these sessions, operators gain knowledge as to what portions of the dig cycle can be improved in order to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. BACKGROUND The BE-1570W walking dragline was commissioned at Coal Creek in November 2006 after relocating from Arch of Wyoming located in southeast Wyoming. The first two years of operation the machine was performing simple side cast stripping due to the low ratio. Coal Creek Mine is a multiple seam operation with overburden thickness ranging from 24 to 140 feet. Early in 2009 the ratio increased to the point where transitioning to cast blast/extended bench stripping was necessary. The current mining conditions consist of a mixture of both stripping styles where the ratio allows. The dragline crews running the machine consist of a mixture of experience levels ranging from 30+ years to only a few years. It has been in this digging environment and slightly inexperienced personnel that the focus has been set for improvement in dragline performance.

Excessive dust generation from unpaved mine haul roads is a problem common to most surface mining operations. While optimal road wearing course material selection parameters reduce the inherent dust generation potential, they do not totally eliminate fugitive dust. Many different classes of suppression or palliative treatments are available for mine haul roads and this paper initially ascertains basic selection guidelines, using a set of ideal dust palliative product, application and performance parameters based on mine road-user requirements. An evaluation and modelling methodology for truck generated fugitive dust emissions is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies. For water-based spraying, a watering model was developed to estimate individual mine road watering frequencies for characteristic site parameter combinations during summer and winter operating conditions, for a required level of control or maximum dust defect. This forms the base-case scenario with which to compare the performance of other types of dust palliatives under the same conditions. Finally, a basic palliative economic evaluation model is introduced with the aim of identifying and costing the establishment, application and maintenance rejuvenation activities associated with the use of chemical palliatives. While palliative cost and performance is generally site specific, it is shown that under certain combinations of conditions, the use of dust palliatives has the potential to deliver cost savings when compared to water-based spraying.

Pre-concentration of low grade ores can improve the economic and environmental sustainability of an operation significantly, with opportunities for implementation ranging from run-of-mine to mill discharge depending on ore specific characteristics. For a gravity separation, where the performance is fundamentally constrained by mineral liberation, these feeds often represent a very difficult separation given the dominance of the relatively coarse gangue and fine liberation sizes. Thus, building knowledge of the feed through characterisation of the density distribution is critical to assessing amenability before progressing towards lab/pilot-scale test work and full-scale operation. The traditional approach to determining the density distribution typically involved sink/float testing, however, recent developments in hydrodynamic fractionation using inclined channels now offers a more cost-effective alternative with minimal health and environmental risk. A non-hazardous dense liquid, namely an aqueous solution of lithium heteropolytungstates (LST), is supplied as fluidisation to a REFLUXTM Classifier, consisting of a vertical section below a system of inclined channels, operating in semi-batch configuration. Fractionation is achieved by increasing the flow rate incrementally and collecting the particles to form a series of flow fractions. The purpose of this paper is to present this new method in the form of a case study, aimed at assessing the amenability of a low grade gold-bearing sulfide ore to pre-concentration. The robustness in the method is demonstrated through comparison with sink/float data, examining the density distribution and the liberation-limited product grade and recovery achievable. These data are then used as a benchmark to assess water-based continuous gravity separations conducted on the feed using a laboratory-scale REFLUXTM Classifier. This data set is used as the basis for process modelling and empirical validation for the recently established partition surface of the separator.

Os fabricantes de instrumentos endodônticos de NiTi têm desenvolvido diferentes estratégias para aumentar a resistência à fadiga e à ruptura torcional desses instrumentos. A tecnologia “Controlled Memory (CM)”, que envolve o emprego de tratamentos térmicos em instrumentos já usinados, é uma dessas novas estratégias. Neste trabalho, dois tipos de instrumentos CM foram avaliados em termos de sua capacidade de recuperação de forma e resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão até 45 graus e esterilização em autoclave, simulando o uso clínico. Os resultados obtidos em relação às temperaturas de transformação martensítica e reversa, ao momento de dobramento a 45 graus, à recuperação de forma e à resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão/esterilização mostraram que os tratamentos aplicados aos dois tipos de instrumentos, embora referenciados como tecnologia CM, produziram resultados diferentes em termos de microestrutura e propriedades.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

Processos metalúrgicos durante soldagem provocam tensões residuais em peças soldadas. Recentemente foi observado um efeito de redistribuição das tensões residuais de soldagem num período de até duas semanas após o termino do processo de soldagem. Existe hipótese nossa que esta redistribuição das tensões está associada a mudança na microestrutura que ocorre no material após do processo de soldagem. Para provar esta hipótese, uma simulação física dos ciclos térmicos do processo de soldagem foi realizada utilizando a simulação física termo-mecânica (GLEEBLE). Através da técnica de microscopia eletrônica de varredura associada a técnica de difração de elétrons retroespalhados (MEV–EBSD) foi observada a variação da misorientação dos grãos e mudanças na microestrutura do material nos primeiros dias após soldagem, acompanhada de redistribuição das tensões residuais.

This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. Os materiais cerâmicos são essenciais para o desenvolvimento da humanidade. O homem os utiliza para os mais variados fins, desde a confecção de utensílios domésticos até a produção de peças de alto desempenho tecnológico. Neste sentido, são extremamente necessárias à produção de pesquisas científicas para prospectar novos materiais para a indústria cerâmica. As argilas são consideradas o principal componente para fabricação de massas cerâmicas. Para produção de peças de cerâmica branca, revestimentos e outras categorias cerâmicas onde a coloração clara é prioridade, usam-se argilas cauliníticas. Todavia, esse tipo de argila possui pouca ocorrência na esfera terrestre, em comparação com outros tipos, tais como as argilas de coloração vermelha. Por tal motivo, encontrar novas jazidas de argila caulinítica para abastecer à indústria ceramista é extremamente imprescindível. Nesse sentido, objetiva-se com esse trabalho caracterizar uma argila caulinítica proveniente de uma jazida localizada no município de São Gonçalo do Amarante, região metropolitana de Natal-RN. O referido trabalho configura-se como a primeira parte de uma caracterização do material estudado. Sendo reservado para esse artigo os ensaios físicoquímicos e na segunda parte os ensaios tecnológicos. A caracterização fisioquímica foi realizada através das seguintes análises: DRX, FRX, Análise Granulométrica (AG), Dilatometria e ATG/DTG. Os resultados obtidos demostram a viabilidade técnica da utilização do material para fabricação de produtos cerâmicos, tais como: telhas, lajotas, revestimentos e outros materiais cerâmicos.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

A study on a small laboratory scale was made of the use of ammoniacalammonium carbonate for batch leaching Mn from low- grade manganiferous materials ( 6 to 16 pct Mn) obtained from deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County , Maine . These materials were partially reduced at 500 ° to 700 ° C with H₂ or CO and then leached with solutions of NH and CO₂ dissolved in water . Extraction of 80 to 90 pct of the Mn was obtained from some sample materials , but 10 to 34 pct of the iron was also extracted . Material from the Littleton Ridge deposit contained manganese intimately associated with Fe , a condition which contributed to difficulties in obtaining a commercially acceptable product . Extensive investigations of the leach and reduction processes with various mixtures of H₂ and water vapor , and CO and CO₂ , failed to disclose a set of conditions for selectively leaching the manganese . Finely divided metallic Fe was probably produced during the reduction steps so that Fe was leached with the Mn in the subsequent extractions .

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

FURNACE-MEN who have not taken advantage of the use of dynamite in certain blast-furnace troubles, as explained by Mr. Witherbee in his valuable papers read before the Institute some years since, cannot appreciate the quick relief and great advantage that may be derived at times from its judicious employment. Before giving my experience in the use of high explosives in blastfurnace troubles of certain kinds, I will record a method I have used with marked success in " blowing down." Had I not understood, however, the use of powder, I would have " salamandered " effectually the first time I tried it. Early in my straight-furnace experiments, last summer, at the Chester, N. J., Furnace, I wanted to blow down to within 3 or 4 feet of the tuyeres. To do this with a down-comer not lined, and without putting in any limestone to keep the gases cool enough to do no harm, was not an easy task. We could keep the bell and hopper cool by filling them with water, say 12 inches deep; but before we got the stock down 15 or 20 feet the pyrometer in the gas-flue on top mas up to 1300°, and the clowncomer was red-hot, with the heat still rising. In this emergency my assistant, Mr. N. M. Langdon, urged the trial of a plan lie had often advocated, viz., the introduction of water in some way under the bell in the proper quantity, in order that its evaporation might absorb and reduce the heat of the escaping gases to a point where it would not do any harm. Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation technology has been evaluated for phosphate recovery from the central Florida phosphate deposits. As expected, it was demonstrated in pilot-plant tests that the ASH system has a specific capacity about 50-100 times higher than that of a traditional flotation cell. In the case of fatty acid flotation, single-stage ASH flotation produced a recovery of 75-77% in a rougher concentrate containing 24% P2O5 In reverse flotation with amine, the single- stage ASH system produced a phosphate recovery of 98% in a cleaner concentrate containing 31% P2O5. These results are comparable with those obtained at plant operations in the Florida phosphate industry. Based on these pilot-plant results, the effects of process variables are discussed in terms of separation efficiency. Subsequently, a 6-inch ASH system was fabricated and tested in a central Florida phosphate plant for reverse flotation in the amine flotation circuit. The high capacity of the ASH system was again demonstrated for the 6-inch ASH system. A single-stage phosphate recovery of 91% was achieved with a concentrate grade of 30% P205. During plant tests, it was established that porous tube plugging, the most significant engineering problem identified, was due to the poor quality of the plant water. Possible solutions to this problem are discussed.

"Metastable (Ti,Al)N coatings with fee structure have been shown to exhibit superior performance as compared to TiN under conditions of wear at elevated temperatures due to their better oxidation resistance and hardness. The oxidation resistance of these coatings increases significantly with increasing Al-content. However, the deposition of (Ti,Al)N films with Ti/ Al ratios below about 30/70 leads to a hexagonal structure which is not suitable for tribological coatings. Only little is known about the location of the cubic to hexagonal phase transition and hence about the optimum composition of (Ti,Al)N hard coatings.To determine the position of this transition, Tii-xAlxN films with different Ti/Al ratios were deposited on high speed steel at substrate temperatures between 100 and 700 °C by means of reactive MSIP. The composition of the films was determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the crystallographic structure by thin film X-ray diffraction (XRD).It could be shown that in case of deposition temperatures of 300-700 °C a two-phase region exists in the metastable TiN-AlN phase diagram, which expands with increasing temperature, wheras at 100 °C substrate temperature no two-phase region was observed. But in opposition to the phase diagram known from literature, which is based on thermodynamic estimations, the detected two-phase region is narrow for typical PVD temperatures, thus allowing the deposition of cubic single-phase Al-rich (Ti,Al)N hardcoatings for tribological applications. Based on these results, a new Ti1-xAlxN film with x = 0.62 has been developed, which showed an increase of oxidation resistance by a factor of 4."

This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

Following a routine production blast at Vale S.A.'s Itabira Mine in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, nearby residents registered complaints about blast-induced vibrations. Analysis of the blast footage revealed that multiple blastholes were detonated simultaneously, resulting in a higher-than-expected charge per delay, ground vibration and cratering even though the electronic delay timing was configured correctly. Subsequent blasts within the mine's soft schist region confirmed the occurrence of sympathetic detonation. Mitigating or eliminating this phenomenon is critical for the mine's operation. Two dynamic pressure tests were conducted using carbon resistors together with typical VOD monitor maintaining the standard booster, electronic detonator, and a blend of 70% emulsion with 30% ammonium nitrate explosive. The tests involved increasing the distance between the central hole (detonated first) and the four surrounding holes in a five-hole sequence. Unfortunately, sympathetic detonation occurred in all these tests. To address this issue, a new explosive with a lower density and detonation velocity was tested. This approach proved promising, as no sympathetic detonation occurred. By leveraging the data obtained from this study, engineers can now identify situations at risk of sympathetic detonation and implement preventive measures, such as selecting the appropriate explosive and recommending safe minimum burden and spacing settings as well as confinement level for each blast while maintaining the desired level of rock fragmentation.

An inexpensive technique that laboratory studies indicated would significantly reduce seepage in irrigation canals was devised and tested through research sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Missouri River Basin Field Committee. Laboratory tests simulating optimum field conditions determined that easily applied sodium carbonate solutions made test beds of canal lining materials virtually impermeable for long periods. The study comprised alternative laboratory treatments of 3-inch-deep test beds of canal earths with 74 water-soluble chemicals in search of one 01' more that would effectively improve the water barrier characteristics of the component clays. Sodium carbonate, one of the least expensive, was among the most effective. The addition of 0,4 lb of reagent per sq yd greatly reduced the seepage from typical, highly permeable test beds. The reagent penetrated and sealed surface for about a 1.5-inch depth.

The solution of the problem of beneficiation of cassiterite from its primary ore deposits is of fundamental importance to Bolivia. The process today involves a gravimetric treatment of the ore followed by sulphide flotation. During the last year, a cassiterite flotation stage has been added in several plants to treat the slime tailings. Although cassiterite flotation is already economical for the slime tailings and the mechanism of the process are understood, it is felt that further research could improve the results. In the past, considerable amount of research and test ark has been performed to select appropriate collectors to improve recovery, to increa¬se the grade of tin in the concentrate, to minimize the effect of metallic ions like Ca+2, Fe+2 and Fe+3 which prevent flotation, and to increase the pH of the pulp which now it can not be higher than 3.0. It has been reported that the halogen salts (1) like NaCl exhibit special surface affinity for cassiterite but none for quartz. These effect seems to be favourable for the selective flotation of cassiterite from silica minerals. In view of these preliminary results it was decided to follow the research accordingly: OBJECTIVES The objectives of the present investigation are: 1. 0 evaluate the influence of NaCl salts in quartz and cassiterite flotation.

In June 1989 a diving cruise of the French submersible Nautile has been carried out on the North Fiji basin spreading ridge. The objective of the cruise was the geological and geochemical study of the active spreading axis and associated hydrothermalism processes. This operation was the third cruise of the French-Japanese STARMER project following two cruises of the R/V Kaiyo in 1987 and 1988.INTRODUCTIONAfter the Seapso III cruise (Auzende et al., 1986, 1988a and b) of the R/V Jean Charcot in 1985, the objective of the Kaiyo 87 and 88 cruises was the complementary Seabeam mapping of the North Fiji Basin spreading axis between WS and 22'S and a systematic sampling (water and rocks) and deep towing (TV and photos) at about every ten milles along the axis.
