The Arbre viaduct, 200 metres long, is the most important structure on the Belgian portion of the High Speed Train line between Paris and Brussels. The particular geotechnical conditions of the soil with carboniferous limestone affected by karstic phenomena, has prompted the designer to found the viaduct on systems of high capacity vertical and batter micropiles. The design of the working micropiles was validated by full scale tests performed on instrumented micropiles. The size of the structure and the deformation criteria to be met when HS trains are crossing the viaduct, together with the lack of references for such innovative structure, called for monitoring the movements of the piers as soon as the link was open to traffic. The authors report on the results of loading tests on micropiles and the results of settlement structure monitoring for a period of 4 years. Settlement of the foundation is estimated taking into account the group effect.

Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

Nowadays the biodiesel use is obligate in Brazil, in order to reduce the emissions of fuel burn. However, it is important to analyze which percentage of biodiesel is necessary to keep or improve the lubricant action of fuel for diesel engine, as well which kind of biodiesel give better performance. Therefore, this work aims to analyze the parameters that keep the lubricant action of biofuels, by using the Box-Behnken design type to optimize them. In this design was evaluated the input parameters: the type of the biodiesel (soybean, sunflower and palm), the concentration (5%, 20% and 100%) and the temperature of contact (25°C, 40°C and 60°C). The analyzed output parameters were the percentage of film formation, coefficient of friction, wear scar diameter (WSD) of ball, these output parameters were obtained by HFRR tribometer and they were analyzed applying response surface methodology. With this methodology was possible to determine the simultaneous influence and the interactions between two or more independent variables investigated. The response surfaces generated for the coefficients of friction, WSD, film formation showed a higher lubricant action for higher levels of concentration of biodiesel. An increase in lubricant action was found to high and intermediate temperature.

Zirconium chlorinator residues contain an array of rare earths, scandium, unreacted coke, and radioactive thorium and radium. Because of the radioactivity, the residues must be disposed in special waste containment facilities. As these sites become more congested, and with stricter environmental regulations, disposal of large volumes of wastes may become more difficult. To reduce the mass of disposed material, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed technology to recover rare earths, thorium and radium, and unreacted coke from these residues. This technology employs an HCl leach to solubilize over 99% of the scandium and thorium, and over 90% of the rare earths. The leach liquor is processed through several solvent extraction stages to selectively recover scandium, thorium, and rare earths. The leach residue is further leached with an organic acid to solubilize radium, thus allowing unreacted coke to be recycled to the chlorinator. The thorium and radium waste products, which comprise only 2.1% of the original residue mass, can then be sent to the radioactive waste facility.

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the summer 1951 is presented in table 1, and for comparison, a similar summary for the summer 1950 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. As indicated, octane numbers of motor gasolines sold in the United states decreased approximately one-half to one octane unit from the record levels attained during the winter of 1950-51 and are a little below the octane numbers of summer 1950. However, average vapor pressures of the summer gasolines did not change, and certain distillation temperatures varied only slightly from those of the year before.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrametallurgical method to recover aluminum, aluminum oxide, and fluxing salts from aluminum salt slags. The slag is leached with water at room temperature to produce a saturated brine slurry. Screening of the slurry yields an aluminum-rich fraction that can be returned to the dross furnace. The remaining slurry is vacuum filtered, yielding a clear brine solution and an aluminum oxide filter cake. Evaporation of the clear filtrate produces a high-purity fluxing salt for reuse in the dross furnace. Over 80 pct of the metallic aluminum is recovered in the aluminum-rich oversize fraction, while essentially all the fluxing salts are recovered by evaporation. This report contains the final results of an investigation on a process research unit scale, an economic evaluation of the method, and recommendations to further improve the process.

This report describes the response to high- temperature sulfatization of a variety of manganese minerals and companion compounds which may occur either as a principal component or as a gangue material in low- grade manganese deposits . Fourteen manganese samples representing oxide , carbonate , and silicate minerals as well as seven compounds which might occur as gangue with manganese minerals were tested batchwise in a bench- scale apparatus under conditions which would be favorable for the sulfatization of manganese . The manganese minerals substantiated thermodynamic predictions and responded to sulfatization but to varying degrees . The gangue materials , MgO , MgCO,, CaO , and CaCO3 , were sulfatized readily in contrast to the iron oxides and the aluminacontaining material which were not .

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner, is an important problem facing the mining industry in the united states. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Batch experiments were performed using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite. Variables that were studied included: mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residue was subjected to arsenic leach tests and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests.

Rock and soil mechanics investigations were carried out in block VIII at Thar Coalfield, Pakistan. Most of the strata were mainly composed of sand, with an average content of 67.68 %. Laboratory studies of rock and soil samples from drill hole GT-01 revealed that the strata in block VIII are very weak with an average uniaxial compressive strength of 3.59 MPa, an average tensile strength of 0.68 MPa, an average Young?s Modulus value of 0.234 GPa, an average cohesion of 129.19 KPa, and an average friction angle of 55.47°. Slope stability analysis, based on a probabilistic approach, was carried out using Slide-V software. Monte Carlo simulations have been applied to investigate the probability of failure in the slopes of an open pit lignite mine in block-VIII. From the slope stability investigation, it was found that the probability of failure is 0 % at a slope angle of 16°.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Geological Survey of Wyoming, and U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), will produce an estimate of the amount of available coal in an area about 55 Ian (35 miles) south of Gillette, Wyo., where the Wyodak coal bed is 8-27 m (25-90 ft) thick. Available coal is coal that actually is accessible for development under current regulatory, land-use, and technologic conditions. Local coal-development considerations include roads, ranches, railroads, pipelines, power lines, wildlife and archaeological sites, alluvial valley floors, cemeteries, and the Hilight oil and gas field and gas plant. Some of these considerations would be mitigated so that surface mining may proceed; others presently preclude mining in their vicinity.

The program of study of pellet binder materials was begun by the ORF in 1963 to examine various Canadian materials as substitutes for bentonite which is imported in large tonnages (199,270 tons in 1969) from the U.S.A. for Canadian pellet plant operations. Most of the raw bentonite used in Canada originates in Wyoming, North Dakota and more recently Greece, resulting in relatively high transportation costs to pellet producers. Some Canadian bentonites available in Western Canada (Alberta) can be beneficiated for uses as pellet binders but could not compete in cost with U.S. sources due to the cost of beneficiation and the higher rail transport charges to Eastern Canada. It is difficult to find a substitute for bentonite, and many materials have been investigated by research groups but, so far, no economic substitute is in use. However, some success is apparent in studies of low cost materials such as clays, sea weed, peat moss and low grade coal, The work done by the ORF over several years has covered systematic test¬ing of Ontario clays, lignite, some types of tree bark, waste sulphite liquors of various kinds, and peat moss as binders for iron ore pellets. The major effort has been concentrated on peat moss and has included a study of the influence of different additives. Since analysis of peat moss for humic acid is difficult and time consuming, a certain amount of time was devoted to development of improved methods, the most useful of which was a spectrophotometric method based on extraction of peat by sodium pyrophosphate for determination of humic substances. In the present paper, only the most recent work concerning the use of peat moss with suitable additives is discussed in detail, since it is the most conclusive and best documented portion of the program.

"SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

"Every year a large number of projects are evaluated by small listed and unlisted mining companies that are hoping to find the ideal project, which will catapult them from a mining junior status to that of a mid-tier mining company. Usually this includes finding the æidealÆ or ærightÆ orebody and then developing a process which will allow cost-effective recovery of the valuable metals and the production of a saleable product. These dreams are seldom realised and there are a number of good and obvious reasons for this. Issues that are generally high up on the agenda for the smaller companies are: cost of developing a project before the feasibility study stage finding a suitable, or optimum processing technology financing of the project dealing with risk.The most expensive part of the development process for the small miner is often the exploration side of the business and finding the æidealÆ orebody. However, finding the right orebody will not be discussed in this paper. The æidealÆ orebody does not necessarily solve the problems of the mining junior, as much of the uncertainty lies in the process required to recover and produce the final metal product. Once a mineralised deposit has been identified and the grade at least reasonably qualified, the development of a suitable process becomes the driver to convert the deposit into an orebody. This paper proposes that a small exploration company has a very limited opportunity to succeed if it does not do sufficient homework before it identifies the æidealÆ orebody. The risk profile for the small mining company, by its very nature, has to be different to that of a major company and as a result the opportunities often lie in managing different and often new process options, which may be the key to bring such projects on line successfully.CITATION:Muller, H and Lorenzen, L, 2012. The introduction of the 36 MVA smelting furnace at Mufulira, and the experience gained during the first five years of operation have been described previously (6). Based on this experience the furnace was rebuilt in 1977., Details of the modifications made during this rebuild are described. Subsequent to the rebuild, refractory failures, particularly in the electrode ring bricks of the sprung arch roof, continued to cause concern, and repair and improved roof control methods are described. Electrode breakages continued, but developments in casing design and electrode preparation have resulted in significant improvements. Modifications in the electric furnace gas handling system are outlined, together with details of further changes to be implemented in the near future. The systems developed for metallurgical control of the furnace and the thermo-dynamics of the process are discussed. The electric furnace at Mufulira is now operating at above design production levels, and has decisively justified the choice of this technology in situations with inexpensive electric power. The potential for further increases in production capacity from the Mufulira unit, and improvements in design for new units are discussed.

INTRODUCTION A thorough evaluation of the geologic material being considered must be conducted to determine the feasibility of constructing a large-scale underground facility in a deep geologic formation. The design and construction of a nuclear waste repository in basalt, due to the unprecedented nature of the project, adds significantly to the need for thoroughness of this evaluation and mandates that geoengineering data and analysis be of the highest quality. The investigations required to collect the data encompass in situ measurements and observations, as well as laboratory and field tests. Mathematical (numerical) models, which are required to predict the long-term performance of the repository structure, must be developed to evaluate rock mass behavior at canister, room, and repository scale and eventual 1 y must be validated through in situ tests and monitoring. The information generated from these geo- mechanics investigations is essential for assessing site suitability and will be utilized in the development of the repository design, the engineered barrier design, and the evaluation of repository performance. The Hanford Site near Richland, Washington is one of nine sites throughout the nation being investigated by the U .S. Department of Energy as a possible location for the first high-level nuclear waste repository in deep geologic formations. The process of site characterization is currently in progress. If the site is nominated by the U.S. Department of Energy, an extensive program will be undertaken, the culmination of which will be a decision on the suitability of the site for waste disposal. "INCO LIMITED'S Shebandowan Mine and Mill is located in a scenic tourist and cottage area near the western tip of Lower Shebandowan Lake, approximately 90 Km west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This nicely designed complex is a positive indication that mining operations can co-exist in harmony within the natural environment.The Shebandowan complex processed nickel-copper ore from 1973 to 1985, inclusive, after which operations were shut down.In late 1988, INCO LIMITED decided to place the Shebandowan complex back into operation, under contract, to mine and mill the remainder of the ore body, according to their specifications. MaclSAAC'S EXPLORATIONS was the successful bidder for the project. Following preliminary rehabilitation, operations were re-activated in late March, 1989. The ore mined to date is of a moderately lower nickel grade than the majority of previous years. However, a higher tonnage rate, combined with improved nickel recoveries, has contributed to a viable operation.A series of mill operating and equipment modifications has enabled MaclSAAC EXPLORATIONS to achieve the quality and grade of nickel-copper concentrates specified, and at the same time, expand mill tonnage throughput while attaining increased nickel recovenes."

"INTRODUCTION Dissolved salts build up in leach solutions over time as leach solutions mature. Iron can be particularly problematic for hydrometallurgical copper production as it can compete with copper for separation during solvent extraction (SX), leading to iron bleed through and reduced electrowinning (EW) efficiency. In its ferric form (Fe+3) it precipitates as a hydroxide at fairly low pH and can promote clogging and disrupted flow within leach pads as a result of localized pH deviations – such as might result from weather events. The solids formed can cause relatively irreversible degradation to pad productivity. The precipitation pH point for solids formation falls as the ferric (Fe+3) concentration increases, making the issue more prevalent as leach circuits for ore bodies containing appreciable iron get older. It can also be more of a concern when leaching lower grade ore like tailings where lower copper content may increase iron/copper ratios which may increase iron accumulation rates. Control of ferric (Fe+3) levels could be used to lower ferric (Fe+3) levels and keep the ferric hydroxide [Fe(OH)3] precipitation pH sufficiently high to avoid the associated solids formation and potential leach pad occlusion. Control of ferric (Fe+3) and ferrous (Fe+2) tenors and ratios may also provide benefit for improving sulfide ore leaching or bioleaching performance and effectiveness. Traditionally options for such control were rather limited with bleeding contaminants off or chemical dosing treatments being prominent methods. Now Blue Planet Strategies introduces a new option. "Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) intends to connect Imphal, the capital of Manipur (bordering Myanmar) with Assam by railway link. They have planned a 125km long railway line that passes through steep rolling hills of Patkai region, eastern trail of Himalaya, and as a result large number of tunnels and bridges need to be designed. While the high mountains are penetrated by tunnel, the deep gorges between the mountain ridges are connected by tall bridges. The tallest of such bridges connects a gorge at about 140m above its bed level with an overall length about 700m at rail level. In all, five such bridges with tall piers are now under construction. With extensive study on possible alternate arrangement of the bridges considering the effect of high seismicity of the area, moderately to highly weathered siltstone/ sandstone as ground bed material, slope of the hills etc it was decided that bridge will be founded on 1.5m diameter bored cast in situ piles with length varying from 20m to 30m depending on the location. The substructures are RCC hollow pier and superstructures are steel open web through type girder of 103.5m span. Considering absence of any major construction work in the vicinity, it was decided that prior to design work, Site-specific spectrum study will be carried out and design will be carried out considering the varying stiffness of the tall piers, each of different height. Interesting results were obtained regarding behavior of piles under lateral loads generated by high seismic conditions. The paper discusses in detail the design of Pile foundations and the effect of bed material along the steep slope on which the piles are being constructed.INTRODUCTIONIndian Railway has undertaken the construction work of connecting the North-Eastern states of India through railway line. The major stretches of the area passes through hilly terrain and as a result the line passes through tunnels and bridges in succession. The tall mountains are being penetrated with tunnels and immediate after deep gorges are crossed with high level bridges. The entire area is under high seismically active zone. The bed material below the ground level of the sloped hill is 4 to 10 meter of mixed soil of sand, gravel, pebbles etc underlain by moderately to highly weathered sandstone, siltstone at the higher level and moderately weathered sandstone, siltstone at lower level. Considering all the aspects like constructability, maintainability, geological and geotechnical aspect, seismicity, stability, safety, functional aspect and cost it was finally decided that the bridges will be simply supported structure with open web through type steel superstructure of maximum span 103.5m and hollow cylindrical discretely varying RCC substructure with 1.5m diameter group of piles as foundation. The paper discusses on the design aspect of the pile foundation in the rocky strata in the hill slope. The codes and standards that have been followed for design are IRS (Indian Railway Standard), IS (Indian Standard), IRC (Indian Road Congress), AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association), UIC (International Union of Railway) provisions."

G. F. LOUGhlin,* Washington, D. C.—With reference to Mr. Bain's paper: The scarcity of adequate geologic data on building stone reflects, among other things, a lack of interest on the part of geologists. It has been one of my duties to attend to matters relating to building stone and other structural materials that have come to the U. S. Geological Survey, but for several years my principal administrative and other duties in the Section of Metalliferous Deposits have prevented me from giving structural materials the attention that they deserve. I have felt that investigations relating to structural materials should be assigned to someone else, but thus far nobody with a sufficient interest in the subject has come forward; further, the specific calls for these investigations have been so few and far between that it has not seemed practical to draft any one for the job. The general situation is such that steady and substantial progress in the application of geology to the utilization of structural materials is not likely to be made unless someone with keen interest in the subject takes the initiative. If the start is once made, I know from experience that cooperation from the more progressive members of the quarry and building industries will be readily forthcoming. Mr. Sales' suggestions are all constructive and most welcome. A thorough, detailed discussion of them might be as long as his manuscript, but could largely be summarized with the one word "amen" qualified by the alibi that a chronic shortage of funds and therefore of personnel has prevented us from carrying out some of his suggestions already. A few of them might call for an Act of Congress before we could undertake them, and one or two, such as the preservation of mine maps, with which I heartily agree, would call for much additional space as well as clerical and supervising help. Several items in Mr. Sales' paper—for example, the question of balance between the scientific and more directly practical studies and the surveys or resurveys of the larger and smaller mining districts—have been covered in my contribution to the symposium. The suggestion of frequent reviews of progress in the study of ore deposits is excellent and can be followed without serious diversion from projects already on the Survey's program. Brief reviews by Survey men have been published in periodicals, and the contributions by several of them to the Lindgren Volume1 may also be cited as serving this purpose to some degree. The practice of publishing short papers by Survey men in outside journals rather than in Government reports is largely the result of experience and expedience. Our printing funds are limited, and considerable time must elapse between the transmittal of a paper and its publication. Time is saved therefore by sending papers to outside journals, and the editors of those journals are usually glad to receive them. Members of the Survey would doubtless prefer to have the products and byproducts of their official work appear in official Survey publications if conditions were more favorable. If we were left entirely to ourselves the balance between the more scientific and the more directly practical studies would be somewhat better than it is, but the
