SULPHUR is a very well known mineral and apparently is produced in many places. It is engendered from an unctuous earthy and powerfully hot substance so that it is considered among experienced workers to bear a resemblance to the element of fire. This is called by these same men the masculine seed and the prime agent of Nature in the composition of metals. Because of its great dryness and heat it has, as experience shows, affinity with fire, which is easily introduced in it when brought near. And once introduced the fire is quenched only with difficulty before its unctuousness is wholly consumed. Although it shows itself to us of such a hot and dry nature, we must not think that sulphur is a substance so pure that it can stand by itself or that in order to attain its form it has no need of its portion and part of moisture like every other mixture. This is shown to us by its easy fusion, in which it resembles the metals. This thing is found in many places and in many varieties of color; some are white, others yellow and orange, and some others between gray and black. They also say that some red is found. It does not occur in that arrangement of veins like other minerals, but most liberal Nature makes whole mountains of it as is seen in the Aeolian islands, [26] near Sicily, in Etna or Moncibello which is the island of Sicily, at Pozzuoli, in the territory of Rome, in the Sienese domain at San Filippo, and in many other similar places. It is a substance that has a very strong odor and is most unpleasant to smell. It is very fixed in its substance so that it is never corrupted by time, by boiling, or by the moisture of water. For although it may stand in water a long time it never becomes soft nor does it ever decrease or increase in weight. It is brittle and easily crushed very fine. It is said that a trace of garlic rubbed on the mortar helps anyone who wishes to reduce it to impalpability. Its ores have a form more like earth than like stone although they some¬times have the color of a certain soft rock. Excavation by tunnel boring machines (TBMs) offers many advantages over conventional excavation methods, in terms of safety level, working environment, advance rate and overall cost. While TBMs have been extensively used in civil tunnel construction, they are also viewed as a competitive alternative to the drill-and-blast method for underground mining, attracting increasing attention from the mining industry. This paper presents an overview and general assessment on applications of TBMs in mines, by reviewing more than 60 TBM applications in underground/open pit coal and hard rock mines around the world. The projects range from the early exploratory trials of TBMs in mines in Germany, England, South Africa and America in the 1960s and 1970s, to the ongoing projects in Australia, China and Chile. The paper focuses on the geological compatibilities, the problems encountered, the solutions undertaken and the lessons learned from those projects. The paper summarises the progress made in the past and highlights the challenges faced by TBMs in mining due to complex ground conditions and geometrical requirements. At the Buffalo meeting in October, 1898 (Trans., xxviii., 865), our Secretary, Dr. Raymond, in speaking of the obstacles he had encountered in securing contributions to the Transactions from members in practice, said : " It is the disinclination of many members to communicate incomplete or partial or preliminary results. They are going to write, ' some day,' a thorough and monumental paper; and meanwhile they prefer to communicate nothing.... It is the difficulty to which I have just referred that I have encountered in a wide correspondence with members, undertaken for the purpose of securing contributions of fact and opinion concerning the special subject of this discussion.... Almost none of them seem to recognize the value of preliminary, incomplete and indecisive reports of practice, as laying the foundation for a thorough' inquiry." This remark was made in immediate reference to a discussion concerning blast-furnace tuyeres; but, notwithstanding this appeal from the Secretary, little has been recorded regarding the distribution, the penetration, and the pressure of the blast at the tuyeres and inside the iron blast-furnace. I am therefore encouraged to contribute the following incomplete and crude observations of the blast-pressure inside the hearth. At the suggestion of J. H. Frantz, the general manager of the Columbus Iron & Steel Go., a test was made at the East furnace of the company to determine whether there was any difference in blast-pressure at the different tuyeres. The apparatus used for this test was not sensitive enough to give accurate results. It consisted of a small pressure-gauge mounted on a 3/8-in. gas-pipe. A hollow plug, fitting into the peep-hole of the tuyere-cap, prevented the blast from blowing-out during the test. The test-pipe was held in place by means of the handle on the outer end.

Geoscientific information management enables the capture, management and delivery of the original geoscientific observations and measurements of the earth’s natural resources. However, original observations and measurements are worth nothing if the quality and integrity of the data can’t be guaranteed. Geoscientific information is one of the fundamental assets enabling miners to make confident and accurate business decisions, whether that is defining a resource model, performing reconciliation, delivering ore reserve reports or meeting environmental compliance requirements. Without access to reliable, validated or verified data it increases the risk of miners using incorrect information for reporting and compliance. Industry codes, such as JORC, or government regulations, such as environmental compliance requirements, must be adhered to and companies should be able to confidently report to these standards. Without having a robust information management framework in place, it becomes a challenge to make trustworthy decisions, report confidently and reduce the risk of non-compliance. As a key initiative, good data governance should form one part of a miner’s information management strategy. Within the mining industry it is common for companies to only consider technology tools as the key focus for compliance whereas a mature information management focus will additionally consider people and process. All three pillars are critical for a miner to have confidence in their data driven decisions. This paper discusses an industry framework for best-practice geoscientific information management based on the observations gathered from analysing data management practices within the mining industry. It focuses on how the three pillars of people, process and technology are crucial elements to improve operational decisions and ensure companies are compliant.

It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

A simple economical method has been developed for determining the in situ longitudinal and shear velocities in rock from which its elastic constants can be calculated. By detonating small charges of high explosives in shallow drill holes near a free surface, both longitudinal and shear waves were generated simultaneously. Accelerometers and velocity gages mounted to the rock surface were used to record the arrival time for both waves over travel path lengths from 50 to 450 feet, Measurements were made in two rock types. From the arrival time measurements, the longitudinal and shear wave velocities were calculated. From these velocities and the density of the rock, the elastic constants were calculated. The dynamic elastic constants of drill core samples of the two rock types were determined in the laboratory by the resonant-frequency method, The lab- oratory and in situ elastic constants are compared and significant differences noted. In general, there is less spread in the in situ data than in the laboratory data, and Poisson's ratio does not fall outside the theoretical limits for the in situ data as is often the case for laboratory-determined elastic constants.

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. Mining related subsidence is a major concern over abandoned shallow coal mines. Many of the subsidence prone areas are presently used or will be used in the future for residential housing development. Concern over mine subsidence is inhibiting the development of surface land uses on previously mined area. This concern prompted public officials to realize the need to develop guidelines which can be used to assess and reduce the risk of mine subsidence damage to building and other improvements. Subsidence and the associated ground movements must be defined before one can relate them to building damage. Surface movements resulting from underground coal mining occurs in two phases termed as: active subsidence and residual subsidence. Active subsidence refers to all surface movements occur in^ simultaneously with the mining operations, while residual subsidence is-that part of the surface deformation which occurs following the cessation of mining. Residual subsidence is the major concern over abandoned mine lands. The duration of residual subsidence is of particular importance from the standpoint of damage at the surface to structures built after the mine has been abandoned. Time spans during which surface subsidence may occur, vary markedly with the mining method being used. In total extraction methods, such as longwalls, subsidence is induced rapidly, beginning almost immediately after mining. Subsidence concurrent with coal extraction is desirable for a safe longwall mining operation. Usually subsidence is complete within a relatively short time. The remaining settlement occurs as residual subsidence due to the gradual compaction of the subsided ground. The relative proportion of the residual subsidence movements is dependent upon the presence of remnant pillars and roadside packs. rate of face advance and depth of workings. In partial extraction methods, such as with room-and-pillar systems. major occurrences of surface subsidence may be delayed for decades until the support pillars and/or the roof have substantially deteriorated and collapsed. The actual time involved depends on a number of factors such as the strength of coal, roof, and floor, extent of fracturing. presence of water, depth of workings, pillar size and percentage extraction. Consequently residual subsidence is more likely to occur over abandoned room-and-pillar mines. The following sections define subsidence over abandoned mines, review the proposed mechanisms, identify the controlling factors and examine the prediction methods.

'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

"At the pre-construction foundations of the controlled waste disposal site built at the Port of Kinuura, the clayey soil account for the most, and with lesser amounts of sand compaction piles and sand mat. The cement deep mixing method (CDM) was used to improve ground impermeability and to reinforce the foundations on the seawall. Laboratory mixing and testing was performed to determine the appropriate quantities of cement additive for clayey soil, SCP sand, and sand mat. The test results indicated that maintaining the design strength of qu = 1,550 kN/m2 would require C = 100 kg/m3 of cement additive for all three soil types (clayey soil, SCP sand, sand mat). The permeability performance needed to improve ground impermeability assumes a permeability coefficient of K = 1.0×10-6cm/s. And the clayey soil satisfied the performance requirements at C = 100 kg/m3. However, to improve grand impermeability of the SCP sand and sand mat required more than 5% of particles having diameters of less than 75 µm. Thus, in the latter two cases, the required cement adding quantity was C = 250 kg/m3. The test specimens at one to two weeks after the created with a permeability coefficient of K = 10-6cm/s became permeability coefficient of K = 10-7cm/s six week later due to the effects of cement solidification. So the permeability coefficient declined about one order. The permeability coefficient three months later tends to decline continued with a somewhat lower.INTRODUCTIONBetween 2008 and 2011, the Aichi Seaside Environment Center constructed the Kinuura No. 3 offshore controlled waste final disposal site at Taketoyo in Aichi prefecture. (see Figure 1). The disposal site offers a landfill capacity of 5.21 million m3 and measures 472,000 m2 in area, of which some 344,000 m2 is a managed controlled sector enclosed within an impermeable seawall."

The following abstract of the minutes of the final Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, held Nov. 12, 1912, in the office of the Institute, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, is here presented for the information of the membership at large. On the announcement by the Secretary that there was a quorum present, President James F. Kemp called the meeting to order. The minutes of the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912, were read and approved. (Sec p. xi,Bulletin No. 71, November). Prof. Jos. W. Richards, in behalf of the Special Committee of the Board of Directors and the Council (Messrs. Richards, Kirchhoff, and Rand), withdrew the two proposed amendments to the Constitution offered by the said Committee at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912. (See Bulletin. No. 70, October, 1912, p. vi., and Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, p. 15.) Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws prepared by the Special Committee. Several members present discussed various sections of the proposed Constitution, and the Committee advised that the suggestions would he duly considered before submitting the final document, which would be duly presented and sent to the membership at large at least 30 days before the next Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. Professor Richards presented a resolution, seconded by Mr. Kirchhoff, making a change in the present Certificate of Incorporation, so that it would conform to the proposed changes in the Constitution and By-Laws; said resolution was unanimously adopted. Professor Richards presented another amendment to the Constitution, which had been purposely omitted from the printed list, but had been requested by many members, namely, the creation of a " Class of Fellows." This question was freely discussed at the Cleveland meeting (see Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, p. 1348), and in view of the diversity of opinion it was-decided to present it in separate form for separate action of the membership at large at the Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. In answer to question, the President announced that the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws presented by Messrs. Corning and Stone at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, Oct. 7, 1912, and published in Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, were still on record. Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the By-Laws, and several sections were discused by members present, but no action of record was taken. Mr. Charles F. Rand read a letter from Mr. L. K. Armstrong, Sec-retary of the Spokane Local Section of the Institute, referring to the proposed amendments to the Constitution, and he announced that many of Mr. Armstrong's suggestions were, in one form or another, already incorporated in the proposed amendments submitted by the Special Committee. A special vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Albert R. Ledoux for the valuable assistance rendered by him to the Special Committee in the preparation of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

W. W. (Pop) Adams' contribution is short and to the point. "I went to Pueblo about March, 1881, and started working for the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. in the sampling room, going from there to the assay and chemical departments, and ending in charge of the lead refinery on the night shift. I was there about two years, returning to California in 1883. The plant was under the management of Mather and Geist, plus Charley Ballard; Herman Schlapp was the metallurgist. Herman Schlapp's name remains prominently in my recollection of Pueblo for his never-failing kindness and charity to the young men who were trying to learn the Pb. game. John Allen, Walter Koehler, George Westcott, Charley Molson, and Alfred de Ropp were there with me. Schlapp and Koehler I have never seen since I left Pueblo; the others I have met often. , Alfred de Ropp I have often met-here, as he was manager of the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. of San Francisco, for years. 'He tells me that I gave him the rudiments. of American profanity at Pueblo; an apt pupil, for since then, by his own efforts, he has added largely to his vocabulary..

Resistivity, porosity, permeability, and saturation data were obtained on core samples from the Big Injun, Clinton, Gordon, Bradford Second and Third, and Venango Second oil sands and formation factor-porosity relationships were derived using the general form of Archie's equation F = aø-m, where F is the formation factor, ø is the porosity, and a and m are constants that depend on characteristics of the rock. It was found that a and m varied significantly between sands, as did the exponent in the Archie relation I = Sw-n, where I is the resistivity index and S, is the water saturation. The average exponent, n, determined from all data was 50 percent greater at residual oil saturation than at residual water saturation. Samples from each sand exhibited differences in directional resistivity and/or permeability. The Bradford Third sand data showed correlation between resistivity and permeability anisotropy.

Most compact bucket wheel excavators in use are in the small to medium range. Large compact bucket wheel excavators compete directly with con- ventional longer boom excavators which have operational advantages over the large compact. There are, however, situations where the large com- pact excavator is viable. In the development of these large compacts there are a number of technical features to be addressed. In addition the SECV now propose to expand the concept to a large compact bucket wheel excavator with a bridge and loading unit for their Loy Yang Open Cut.

One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. At the time of the promulgation of the new Federal regulations, United States Steel Corporation was in the process of designing the Cumberland preparation plant. As a result of the new regulations

"Introduction.Recent experiments (Fieldner, A.C., Katz, S.H., Kinney, S.P., and Longfellow, E.S., Poisonous gas from carbon tetrachloride fire extinguishers, Jour. Franklin Institute, October, 1920, pp. 543-565), by the Bureau of Mines have shown that carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids when applied to fires produce small quantities of irritating and poisonous gases which may be dangerous in very closely confined spaces where conditions are such that the user can not escape without breathing the fumes. The results of the experiments have been confirmed in an independent investigation by the Underwriters Laboratories (Nuckalls, A.H., Corrosive action and products formed when carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids are applied to fires, Nat. Fire Protection Assoc. Quarterly, vol. 14, January, 1921, pp. 221-236) who conducted similar experiments for the purpose of determining the corrosive action of these fumes on metals. Both investigations showed that carbon tetrachloride vapor, hydrochloric acid gas, and phosgene were produced in addition to the ordinary products of combustion, such as smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The Bureau of Mines' tests were made by applying a one-quart extinguisher to a wood fire of excelsior in a gas-tight room of 1000 cubic foot capacity. The glass and metal construction of this chamber limited the experimental fire to very small dimensions. It was, therefore, deemed desirable to make a test on a larger scale in the entry of the Bureau's experimental mine in order to similate more nearly the practical use of carbon tetrachloride and other types of extinguishers in mines.Description of extinguishers.Two series of tests were made under identical conditions on different days. Commercial carbon tetrachloride extinguishers were used in the first series of tests and ""foamite firefoam"" extinguishers in the second series of tests."

Pyro-metallurgy is still the main process for lead production and a lot of lead direct smelting processes have been developed in recent years. All the processes will experience two steps in common. The first is the oxidisation of PbS to PbO and then reduction from PbO to Pb, furthermore, from ZnO to Zn. So, the composition of melts, especially the slag composition at reduction step change continuously. Up to now, there are few systematic results on the slag physical-chemical properties with its composition change. In this work, the typical lead direct smelting processes were analysed from theoretical and practical standpoints. The full-period slag composition and slag melting point change were compared. Especially, to the PbO and ZnO reduction steps, based on the full-period slag composition change, the slag properties were predicted. Based on dust composition and test results, the mechanism of Pb compound evaporation and its effect on practice and measurement of high PbO bearing slag physical-chemical property is discussed. It is suggested that to restrain the evaporation in practice and to obtain more accurate measurement results of physicochemical properties of smelting slag are the key problem not only to set high efficiency, energy saving process, but also to environmental pollution control.

The corrosion behaviour of Al-B4C metal matrix composites immersed in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03, 0.5 M K2SO4, and 3.5% NaC1 solutions was investigated. Effects of B4C particle volume fraction on the corrosion behaviour of composites were studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the surface morphology of the material before and after corrosion. Results show that all materials investigated are more corrosion resistant in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03 than in other solutions. No appreciable corrosion was observed in boric acid and sulfate solutions in contrast to an obvious pitting in NaC1 solution for both base alloy and composites. The preferential pitting sites are the interfaces of Al/Fe intermetallics for the base alloy, and the A1/B4C interfaces for the composites. Increasing the volume fraction of B4C particles in the composite decreases its corrosion resistance of Al-B4C composites.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenomenon through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhibit low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations -the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiquitous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treatment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper.
