The pyrometallurgical production and recycling of non-ferrous metals involves the use of complex feed stocks, having awide range of chemical compositions from sources that include mineral sulphide concentrates, high value obsolete materials and process wastes. The commercial viabilities of these operations hinge on the ability to extract value from these materials. Increasingly, modern computer-based tools are used to describe and predict process outcomes, including mass and heat balances, the partitioning of elements and phase equilibria. At the heart of these predictive tools are thermodynamic databases that describe the fundamental chemical properties of a system and all the components present. A comprehensive research program has been established to develop an accurate, self-consistent thermodynamic database describing all gas-slag-matte-metal-speiss-solid phases in the system Cu2O-PbO-ZnO-Al2O3- CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2-S-(As-Bi-Sb-Sn-Ag-Au). The database can be used in conjunction with the FactSage computer platform. The accuracy of the database and its application to industrial practice is demonstrated.

Successful technology commercialization occurs when a company is focused on creating shareholder value by providing a reliable product at a price point attractive to the market, while at the same time maintaining strict control of its internal cash burn rates. Developing a technology platform and a market platform are equally important in the commercialization of new technologies such as fuel cells. This paper will discuss some of the key barriers that may prevent successful market entry for emerging and disruptive technologies, such as: R&D priorities, supply chain / manufacturing issues, materials, cost reduction strategies, customer needs, developing a market pull strategy, institutional barriers such as existing regulatory/approvals processes and/or current design/purchasing practices, product reliability and resilience, and finding the right path to market. SDTC is an arms length foundation that aims to financially support the successful market entry of emerging and disruptive technologies that can provide significant environmental benefits to Canada. The fuel cell industry, which represents one such technology, is at a critical point in its evolution where market receptivity and the technology platform are converging to potentially create significant customer advantages for fuel cell products being developed today. Since its inception in 2001, SDTC has received over 850 business cases from which it has identified successful strategies to overcome the noted barriers to commercialization. While maintaining commercial confidentiality, the SDTC database will be mined to: Identify specific success stories that have overcome various barriers and discuss their strategy; Identify specific fuel cell related industry experiences that hinder successful market uptake. The general attributes and trends of successful technology developments identified in this paper will hopefully provide guidance to technology developers and prepare them to successfully tackle the next set of hurdles on the path to commercializing their technology, once they have proven their technology works in the laboratory.

The world is changing rapidly on the social, economic, political, technical and environmental fronts and our metallurgists/mineral processing engineers of the future will arguably need to have a different set of skills than those which were traditionally regarded as adequate during the latter half of the 20th century. To control the formation of acid drainage at its source, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the role of iron-oxidizing bacteria in the oxidation of pyrite. In laboratory tests, it was determined that Thio-bacillus ferrooxidans could be controlled in coal refuse using anionic surfactants, with an associated decrease in acid production of about 75 pet. Based on these results, large-scale tests were conducted at an 8-acre active coal refuse area in northern West Virginia and an 11-acre inactive refuse pile in southern West Virginia. Acid production was decreased 60 to 95 pet for 4 to 5 months after application of 55 gal/ acre of 30-pct sodium lauryl sulfate solution. To date, effluent surfactant concentrations have been extremely low. Either a hydroseeder or a road-watering truck can be used to apply the surfactant. Since the surfactant solution must reach the pyritic material to be effective, sites that have been reclaimed are generally not amenable to these procedures. A simple laboratory test is described that provides an estimate of adsorption potential; this can be used to calculate a safe application rate.

Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

The “circulating load” confounds understanding of ball milling circuits. Conflicting opinions exist as to its role. Should it be high, or low? Why does it even exist? It is commonly accepted in the plant as a given, the outcome of largely unknown factors. As such, it may often go unmeasured or even ignored. This paper describes the importance of the circulating load in wet ball milling circuits. It is characterized not only in terms of solids mass flow (or ratio of mass flows), but also by its other key physical characteristic, its size distribution. Its effect on grinding circuit performance is explained. The equipment application design steps to achieve a desired circulating load, in terms of both its mass flow and size distribution, are described. Finally, its pivotal role in grind control is specified. Our goal is for the reader to come away with a fresh understanding of the role of the circulating load in wet ball milling circuits, including how and why it should be measured and managed.

Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is n practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota (a) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (b) topsoil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (c) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (d) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation. Almost half the nation's cool reserves are in the Northern Great Plains underlying several million hectares of agricultural land. Social pressures to return mined land to agriculture or other productive uses have resulted in recent enactment of state and federal legislation, which is intended to restore productivity to disturbed areas. All such legislation relating to the Northern Great Plains has stipulated that useable soil material be saved and returned to mined land after spoils are smoothed. This requirement immediately raises questions as to how much soil material is needed, what criteria are important in defining useable soil material, how is the soil material to be handled in the earth-moving operations involved, and how can replaced soil material be maintained and revegetation. Scientists at the USDA Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota have conducted research on the reclamation of disturbed lands since 1970. Initially this research was designed to identify and characterize those physical and chemical properties of spoils that are most restrictive to plant growth (1). Basically, they found that any properties of spoils that reduced the efficiency of storage and utilization of the limited precipitation received adversely affected plant growth. Thus, in the Northern Plains, revegetation of mined land was found to depend upon the management of factors affecting the availability of water to plants - the same as on unmined land. After the major problems in revegetation were identified, technologies were developed to circumvent the effects of the growth-limiting factors (2). Basically two approaches were identified by which plant growth-restricting properties of spoils could be corrected: (a) various amendments (gypsum, sulfur, Fertilizers, mulches, calcium chloride, etc.) could be applied to spoils to improve their ability to conserve precipitation and provide water for plant growth; or (b) undesirable spoils could be covered with suitable soil materials to reduce or alleviate adverse effects. The latter approach appeared to be more feasible in most instances And is the approach specified in current legislation. The remainder of this paper discusses research on the use of roil materials returned to spoils and summarizes the information obtained.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data was extracted from various sources to develop qualitative ternary and tetrahedral plots differentiating mineralogy, bond work index (BWi) and hardness of ore bodies at different mine sites. A large number of historic reports and compiled characterization laboratory data were used to create a searchable "data lake." The data lake provides a means to locate, consolidate, and visually represent XRD from disparate sources. Visualizations with large amounts of mineral ore XRD characterization data provide a qualitative assessment of ore properties, including comminution qualities such as material hardness. The visual map can be employed to quickly estimate expected ore character and behavior, given XRD analysis of samples from newly characterized and unfamiliar ore. "In 2013, Coeur Mining had more than $55 million in general and administrative (G&A) costs and less than $100 million in cash flow. This year, its G&A costs stand at $30 million, down by more than 40 percent, its all-in sustaining costs have shrunk by more than 30 percent, and its cash flow is above $200 million. To realize this, the company aggressively reduced both its corporate overhead cost and operating cost and repaid more than $300 million in debt.The more robust balance sheet meant the precious-metals producer was well positioned to reap the rewards of an upsurge in commodity prices in the early part of 2016. Its stock price soared from $1.75 in January to $15.98 in August. "In today’s tough mining environment, the key difference between surviving and thriving is how effectively miners optimize their mining operations. This paper explores the compounding effects material fragmentation has on mining costs and productivity. Starting with Drilling & Blasting and moving through Loading, Hauling and Crushing, we will illustrate the opportunities to improve operating costs and thus reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the total mining system. Material size and volume requirements are defined by the needs of the mill or plant, and drive the rest of the mining operation from the bench through the primary crusher. At the start of the cycle, where the rock mass is drilled and blasted, the degree of fragmentation and the muck pile configuration is determined, as are the effects on cost and productivity of all subsequent operations. The cost of managing oversize material, including secondary handling, overloading, reduced diggability, higher load factors, extra pass loading, increased wear factors and reduced throughput rates are all opportunities for improvement. INTRODUCTION Having visited many mine sites, customers are asking about the end to end mining value stream from loading to the crusher and how to measure the cumulative effects on each part of the mining value chain. All too often improvements with the drilling and blasting may impact fragmentation but do not improve the diggability so the net change on cycle times or fill ratios is perceived to be negative at the point of loading but they may have a measured improvement going through the primary crusher. This makes it imperative to measure performance at each segment of the overall cycle and not just to the crusher but thru it. The mine material process originates with solid rock, in-situ, and progresses to the output of the primary crusher. Once the material has passed the primary crusher the fragmentation size will be fairly consistent and promote consistent throughput of the plant or mill. In late 2015 a team was conducting a reassessment visit to a mining site where we had conducted the original assessment the previous year. Though many recommendations had been implemented some had been so recent they had not resulted in the expected improvements. Several of our discussions kept returning to the impact fragmentation has to both the individual components of the mining cycle but also the effects compounded throughout the end to end process. Let’s move on to the big picture before we zoom in on any specific operation. To get from native solid rock in the ground to a concentrate or a saleable rock product we have the same steps from one end of the chain to the other. We start with a good geological understanding of the rock type, characteristics and structure to design a program to drill and blast the rock. The height of the bench is relevant to the annual production requirements and the specific digging equipment models best sized to make that production possible. The equipment selection influences the bench height which has a minimum and maximum hole diameter to maintain a safe blasting operation. The diameter of hole burden and spacing all contribute to a good distribution of explosives in the rock mass that maximize the fragmentation and preconditioning of the rock when blasted. The timing and sequencing of hole initiation will yield a fragmentation ratio and diggability factor. Fragmentation size adjustments will change the meters drilled per cube and the explosives consumption will change accordingly. Drill cost is measured by meter drilled so a direct relationship exists between cost and fragmentation sized achieved."

SECONDARY hardening in tempering has long been recognized as a typical characteristic of steels containing large amounts of carbide-forming alloys. These steels, when quenched and tempered, tend to soften somewhat after tempering at low temperatures, and to reharden at intermediate tempering temperatures before finally softening to low hardness. This behavior in tempering has been studied by many investigators, chiefly with respect to the secondary hardening of high-speed steels. The initial softening has usually been ascribed to decomposition of martensite and growth of iron carbide particles. The secondary hardening has been explained by formation of fresh martensite from residual austenite, formation of very fine alloy carbide particles and by precipitation hardening of metallic compounds in the ferritic matrix. However, factors derived for the calculation of tempered hardness in low-alloy steels1 indicated only a tendency toward retarded softening rather than a discontinuous rehardening. A study was, therefore, made to determine whether fresh martensite from residual austenite and precipitation hardening are essential to rehardening and the degree to which tempered martensite could be rehardened by precipitation of alloy carbides. The mechanism of carbide rehardening was also investigated to determine the nature of the process. The causes of secondary hardening in high-speed steel have received serious consideration for about thirty years. Among the earlier workers Bain and Jeffries2 in 1923 recognized residual austenite as a significant factor, but in addition, emphasized the effect of the formation of alloy carbide particles of "critical" size. They conceived that freshly quenched martensite forms low-alloy iron carbide at low tempering temperatures; with further tempering the iron carbide is then modified by alloying elements that can diffuse most readily at intermediate temperatures (850°F); and that the iron carbides grow in size by coalescence so that the steel tends to lose hardness. At higher tempering temperatures carbide stability rather than alloy availability becomes the controlling influence and in high-speed steel "iron-tungsten carbide is the most stable one and forms to the elimination of the earlier formed carbides. . . . The iron-tungsten carbide particles reach approximately the size for critical dispersion after a short reheat at 1100°F." This concept, the formation of alloy carbide nuclei, redissolving of the iron carbide, and diffusion of carbon to the alloy carbide, was restated for vanadium steel in 1932 by Houdremont, Bennek, and Schrader.3 Subsequent studies have confirmed that iron carbide changes to alloy carbide at 1000 to 1100°F, but the mechanism of the process has received little consideration .

Determining backfill stress is an important part of evaluating mine safety, whether personnel are working in proximity to backfill or in other areas of the mine where backfill is an integral part of regional support. To assist in determining stress in backfill more accurately, researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Placer Dome, Inc. (Turquoise Ridge Mine), Peabody Energy Co. (Foidel Creek Mine), and Hecla Mining Co. (Lucky Friday Mine) used temperature readings recorded by thermistors to correct for the influence of temperature on stress data. These thermistors were positioned in the stems of earth pressure cells installed in backfill. Corrections were then calculated and compared using four different methods: polynomial equations fit to temperature-versus-stress plots before the pressure cells were loaded by overburden, a factor provided by the manufacturer, a theoretically derived factor, and a linear correction factor based on information collected during periods when no mining was taking place. To evaluate the accuracy of these methods, corrected stresses were calculated using each method and results compared to cumulative stresses caused by blasting at one of the mines. Results indicated that only a small percentage of the temperature effect on stress was corrected using the factor from the manufacturer because that factor accounted for only the pressure transducer and not the entire instrument body. Stresses adjusted with a linear correction factor based on information collected during periods when no mining was taking place were the most accurate. Stresses recorded at two other mines were corrected using the theoretical method and the polynomial equations method; the two methods produced similar results. For some time intervals, the results were identical.

Introduction The subject matter of this paper will be treated under two heads: (1) experimental work and the development of the purification system, and (2) the operation of the commercial plant. During 1927-28, a two-ton slag-retreating plant was in operation at the smelter for experimental purposes. Details of this operation and of the commercial plant are presented in a paper by G. E. Murray, read before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in April, 1933 (1). A point which has considerable bearing on the subject of the present paper, and which was not emphasized by Mr. Murray, is the concentration of volatile impurities in the zinc oxide fume produced. The result of the operation of the slag fuming furnace is largely to confine in a closed circuit all the minor constituents of the Sullivan concentrates, both lead and zinc. They pass into the feed of the zinc fuming furnace, with the result that all impurities which volatilize-such as arsenic, antimony, tin, fluorine, etc.-report in the zinc oxide product. The accompanying condensed flow-sheet (Figure 1) will illustrate this. The only outlet for impurities which is not shown is the small tonnage which passes the Cottrell plants. The flow-sheet would indicate the possibility of building up a prohibitive concentration of cathodic impurities in the oxide leaching plant feed. However, after three years' continuous operation this has not occurred. Should this condition arise at some future date, discard of some tonnage of blast furnace slag is indicated. In Mr. Murray's paper, the much greater flexibility of blast furnace operation, due to the slag fuming furnace, is stressed, particularly as to the lead content of the slag. The requirements of our lead refinery call for a bullion containing about 0.70 percent antimony.

"The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."

Waste oil is a growing problem throughout industries where environmentally responsible disposal ways are usually costly. There are many industries have developed process to reuse of waste oil as a source of energy on their own premises. Hanwha Mining Services Indonesia is one of blasting service that manufacturing explosive using waste oil. The usage of 60 % waste oil content in fuel solution already developed applied since 2020 at Petrosea-Kideco Site and will be increase until 100 % in 2022. The purpose of this research is to analyze the increasing of waste oil usage from 60 % to 100 % content at Petrosea Pit without reducing the emulsion quality and performance, and surely eliminate the fuel cost and reducing waste oil processing cost. Some trial conducted to determine the effect and quality of using 100 % waste oil content on emulsion at production blast. The method use to know the quality of 100% waste oil of emulsion is by direct application on bench blast. Using Microtrap VoD recorder, explosive energy will be recorded into m/s dimension, microtrap recorder the speed of explosive detonation in line with the speed of burning wire in the blast holes. The summarized of this research present that the using of 100 % waste oil content on emulsion can be applied on bench operation with the result of Velocity of Detonation (VoD) data is 4,559 mm/s, the mean of fragmentation size is in range 65.31 to 225.62 mm, the average of digging time on 1st layer is in range 10.2 to 11.6 s and on 2nd layer is in range 8.9 to 9.5 s, and the productivity still achieve on target. The result of all parameter quality still in the standard range of Hanwha and Petrosea.
