This report describes two goniometers that, by simple manipulation, can be used to ascertain the attitude of a joint, vein, or fracture plane observed on the planar projection of a borehole photograph taken with an NX borehole camera of the type developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One goniometer was designed to interpret photographs taken in vertical drill holes and the other for photographs taken in inclined drill holes. In practice, several measurements are made on each photograph with the goniometer. These data are then substituted into mathematical equations, which are derived in this report and the attitudes of fracture planes are determined.

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

The primary purpose of ore hauling model studies is to capture the variability of the ore delivery ? stockpiling process in order to improve the estimation of equipment capacities and achievable throughputs. The operation of a mine-to-site ore delivery system is the subject of a number of challenges. Typically, ore is hauled by a given combination of trucks, conveyors and trains. In addition, ore loading, ore transferring to another means of delivery, stockpiling, reclaiming, and further deliveries involve many other types of equipment. The concurrent operation of all these units is scheduled; nevertheless, they are subject to planned maintenance and random breakdowns. To support our engineering design work on ore hauling operation, discrete event type models were built for each specific task. Then, due to recurring demands, an ore hauling library was gradually compiled. The now available model library allows fast and efficient simulation of various mine-to-site hauling arrangement, adaptable to various mining and mine construction operations (e.g. bauxite, iron ore, copper ore and coal).

IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. Their reserves of direct-shipping ore are extremely small and their operations are being conducted in small, or intermediate pits, with a high stripping ratio in the outer fringes, or shore lines of older pits. and in ore bodies passing from direct shipping to the washing and the intermediate, or retreat ore state. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.

Time Usage Models, used as a basis for calculating performance indicators for mobile mining equipment, have developed from very simple to very sophisticated models. This development has paralleled the increased collection and analysis of production data that itself has been enabled by the evolution of underground voice and data communications along with the relevant information systems. A Time Usage Model divides the hours that equipment is (or is not) used into standard components, by a hierarchical breakdown, so that measures of productivity can be used to compare performance of both people and equipment. The calculation of equipment availability, and thus the underlying Time Usage Model, has always been an extremely emotive topic as different groups use time usage information for different purposes. The direct link between measuring performance Key Performance Indicators (KPI) calculated from these models and employee rewards impacts upon the workforce. This paper discusses the conflict in use by various stakeholders and proposes ways to address some of the more contentious issues each supported by case studies. The simple status code functionality used by early systems has proven inadequate, leading to the evolution of “work-arounds”. These workarounds have become the norm and unfortunately have become embedded in the next generation of models and the information systems that incorporate them. This paper contends that the industry should stop building Time Usage Models to accommodate shortcomings in proprietary systems, but rather collaborate with suppliers to develop innovative methods to deal with the fundamental requirements. There are many points of differentiation that are not clear-cut. Pitfalls are discussed as well as threats to success. A framework of rules is developed as guidelines for how a Time Usage Model should be developed and applied. This will hopefully stimulate the on-going discussion as to how Equipment Availability and other components of the model should be calculated.

Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe +) hydroxide deposits in well screen, pump intake and riser pipe. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron-oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well construction and well development techniques designed to minimize well clogging, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells prone to iron encrustation can, in some cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500 percent that of unacidified wells.

In today’s underground mass mining, the orepass is an important part of the infrastructure as it connects two or more mine levels and is used for conveying or storing large amounts of material. One of the main risks related to an orepass is when operational or structural failure occurs, leading to long-term loss of functionality. Developing or rehabilitating an orepass when major failure has occurred is a time-consuming and expensive operation, and the risk of a long-term orepass loss motivates the development of alternative transportation strategies to ensure the continuation of smooth operations in large underground systems. The study presented in this paper has been done at the Loussavaara Kiirunavaara AB Malmberget mine in Sweden, where iron ore deposits are being extracted using sublevel caving. "Ore outcrops were first discovered in the area in 1911. Following various periods of exploration by private interests and Cominco Limited, the Coast Copper Company, Limited property was brought into production in August 1962. Subsequently, Cominco explored the adjacent Quatsino Gold Mines property and is currently developing, and producing from, what is now known as the Benson Lake Mine.The Benson Lake Mine was developed using a conveyor-equipped decline and trackless LHD equipment. The operation produces 800 tons per day of copper-iron ore, copper being the main product. Copper and iron concentrates are trucked 25 miles to storage and shiploading facilities near Port McNeill to await shipment to Japan."

THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. The biggest chromium mineral processing plant in Albania is Bulqiza plant. It has been in operation for more than 20 years, treating low-grade chromium ores grade 20 ? 26 % Cr2O3 and producing chromium concentrates grade 48 ? 50 % Cr2O3. About 2 million tons of tailings with 13 % Cr2O3 content are stocked in a dam close to the plant. Mineral processing of low-grade chromium ores with less than 16% Cr2O3 content is unprofitable because the mining expenses are high comparing with the current market prices of chromium concentrate. Recycle and enrichment of existing tailings is profitable, because there are no underground mining expenses in this case and because that this kind of raw material does not need expenses operation of crushing and grinding. The existing plant is in operation for more than 8 years treating existing tailings as raw material. Grade of concentrate in the value 40 % Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 recovery in the value 30-35% in the plant are considered low. The main reason of low concentrate grade and recovery is high content of particles under 100 microns, the slimes, in raw material. In the paper is described the study carried out to improve enrichment of the tailings, as well as analyses of existing process, raw material and products. It is concluded that majority of lost is present in the slimes which are not separated in existing spiral separators and shaking tables. Basing in the study is composed the new flow sheet of recycling and concentration of the tailings to produce chromium concentrate grade 41 ? 42 % Cr2O3 and recovery 60 %, decreasing in this way the concentrate production cost two times. In the paper are presented the tests and results of concentration of particle size fraction under 100 microns, using gravimetric, magnetic and flotation methods, as well as equipment and machines suitable for slimes treatment and concentration.

Copper, as far as we know, was the first metal used by man, and due to the fact that it occurs in many places in the 'native' state, and also to the ease with which it may be shaped, it has played an important part in the evolution of civilization. Copper tools with inscriptions dating back to 6,000 B.C. are known in Egypt, where the metal probably got its start as a useful material in human hands. Just how far back the use of copper in Canada dates is difficult to say, but it was in use by the Indians in the Lake Superior country long before the arrival of the first white man. For many generations the Eskimos also have used copper derived fr0m deposits of the native metal found in the Coronation Gulf district. Due to the metal's many unique qualities, imperishable with age, ancient implements and utensils are apparently as good today as when they were made, having withstood the onslaught of time probably better than objects of any of the other base metals. Copper alloys so well with other metals that today it is second only to iron in its industrial value. Even at the beginning of the eighteenth century the world's production of copper was probably not more than seven thousand tons a year, with Great Britain producing three-fourths of this. One hundred years ago the mines of the United States, Chili, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Tasmania, which now produce about nine-tenths of the copper of the world, were totally undeveloped. Ln 1926 the world production of copper was approximately 1,658,000 tons, which was seventy thousand tons greater than in the preceding year; but growing demand absorbed the increased production, so that the stock of rough copper throughout the world is comparatively small. Of this huge tonnage of the metal, Canada produced four percent, two-thirds of it emanating from British Columbia, nearly one-third from the Province of Ontario, and the balance from Quebec.

This report covers the installation and evaluation of lb reinforced concrete sets, 6 in each of 3 mines in the Goeur d'Alene mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho, and is the second of a series to determine the feasibility of a more permanent type of mine support. Closure measurements, where applicable, were made periodically of the concrete-set installations and were compared to the initial cross section of the sets. A different method of blocking was used at each test site; at one test site the type of blocking was changed several times during the test. Results from each test site are reported separately. No attempt was made to compare the cost of the concrete installations with the cost of other types of support used in the district. Such an evaluation of permanent types of support would require a longer period of time. At this time, tests are not complete enough to determine the applicability of underground concrete supports. However, results to date tend to confirm the general opinion that precast concrete mine supports could be used to advantage in openings that require support and must have long life, especially where decay of timber is an important factor.

GEOLOGICAL studies have revealed the occurrence of hundreds of pegmatite dikes in north- east Brazil, Fig. 1, in the three states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Ceara. Heretofore data have not been available on the possible production of lithium minerals from these areas, and in March, April, and May 1953 the author undertook a reconnaissance survey covering a cross-section of the pegmatites. Sixty-one pegmatites were examined. The pegmatites of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba are located in an arid region (Seratao), and except in the most southerly portion there is a mini- mum of vegetation and overburden. The region is easily prospected and relatively accessible by jeep or truck. The pegmatites examined in Ceara are in an area of lush vegetation along the flanks of the Jaqueribe River valley. It is therefore more difficult to prospect, and the dirt roads, as a means of access, leave much to be desired. For all practical purposes rail transportation, except in Ceara, is not available. The rocks of the area1-4 are composed of Pre-Cambrian schist, gneiss, quartzite, and marbles. They have been intruded by granites, monzonites, and diorites and cut by quartz veins and pegmatites.

"Indirect recovery and use of waste heat contained in smelter off-gas is proposed to expand regions available for year-round, on-site production of micro-algae–sourced biodiesel, a fuel that could be used in underground machinery. A dynamic model of an off-gas heat exchanger describes capture and distribution of heat into open, external, rectangular micro-algae ponds. Smelter off-gas contains sufficient energy to maintain large-scale micro-algae cultivation pond temperatures above 15°C, even with winter ambient temperatures below –15°C. Results highlight opportunities that could lie in tapping these heat resources to produce renewable biofuels on-site and sequester CO2 while leaving the industrial process unaffected.RÉSUMÉ On propose la récupération et l’utilisation indirectes de la chaleur résiduelle contenue dans les dégagements gazeux des fonderies pour développer les régions se prêtant à une production toute l’année durant et sur place de biodiesel à partir de micro-algues, carburant dont on pourrait se servir pour le matériel d’exploitation souterraine. Un modèle dynamique d’échangeur de chaleur contenue dans les dégagements gazeux décrit le captage et la distribution de la chaleur dans des bassins rectangulaires ouverts de micro-algues en extérieur. Les dégagements gazeux des fonderies contiennent suffisamment d’énergie pour maintenir les températures des grands bassins de culture de micro-algues au-delà de 15°C, même avec des températures ambiantes en hiver inférieures à –15°C. Ces résultats soulignent les possibilités que pourrait offrir l’exploitation de ces sources de chaleur pour la production de biocarburants renouvelables sur place et pour la séquestration de CO2 sans que cela n’ait d’incidence sur le procédé industriel.INTRODUCTIONMicro-algae that grow in water can efficiently convertsolar energy and carbon dioxide into biomass. This biomass can be up to 50% oils (lipids), which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel through transesterification (Demirbas, 2008). Compared to terrestrial plants that produce similar oils (e.g., jatropha, soybean, and rapeseed), micro-algae represent an order of magnitude increase in areal productivity, do not require arable land, and can be continuously harvested (Rawat, Ranjith Kumar, Mutanda, & Bux, 2013). The potential advantages through the production of biodiesel from micro-algae also include sequestration of carbon dioxide, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and the co-production of other value-added bioproducts."

"In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. The ovoid deposit was subsequently delineated in the winter of 1994–1995. By the end of 1995, the ovoid had been well explored, and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes (Mt), with an average grade of 2.83% ni and 2.0% cu (naldrett, singh, Krstic, & li, 2000). Drilling to the east of the ovoid indicated the presence of significant mineralization. in June 1995, inco limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay nickel company (VBnc), which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBnc for 20 years as part of this agreement. in april 1996, inco bought Diamond Fields and acquired the remaining 75% of VBnc shares."
