"In this paper, the pyrolysis of biomasses including bamboo, sawdust and walnut shell were performed in a tube furnace under temperatures between 400? and 600? to obtain biomass carbon, gas, and tar. Textural parameters analysis revealed the caloric value of biomass carbons between 32 MJ/kg and 34 MJ/kg. It also indicated that the surface of biomass carbon consists of mesopore and macropore structures. By using GC analysis, it was determined the main ingredients of pyrolysis gas are CO, H2, CO2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H6. Calculation states that the density of pyrolysis gas is roughly between 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.7 kg/m3, while the calorific value of pyrolysis gas is between 12000 kJ/m3 and 16500 kJ/m3, illustrating that pyrolysis gas is a median gas. The calorific value of biomass tar was found to be between 32 MJ/kg and 34 MJ/kg, with more than 80 compounds in the biomass tar identified by GC-MS method.IntroductionBiomass as a renewable source is the world's largest and most sustainable energy resource [1].The conversion of biomass has the potential to be a renewable and carbon neutral method of producing fuels and chemicals [2-4]. Pyrolysis is a thermo-chemical process defined as applying heat to degrade biomass in an inert atmosphere. It transforms unstable biomass and other organic materials into biomass carbon, gas, and tar [5]. Biomass carbon can be stored or transported much easier as compared to parent biomass or be converted to value added products such as activated carbons[6]; gas is a relatively low-energy-density fuel; tar can be considered as a source of useful chemicals[7].The characterization of biomass pyrolysis will lead to its increased understanding and utilization as a source of solid, liquid and gaseous products which can be used as fuels and petrochemical feedstock[8,9].In recent years, many researchers studied the effect of temperature on biomass pyrolysis product distribution characteristics in a variety of pyrolysis reactor[10]. "DURING the past five years, production of asbestos fibers has increased in all countries that list asbestos as one of their mineral resources. Despite the many small mines that have been opened in Canada, United States, Mexico, South America, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Yugoslavia, and Rhodesia, the supply still does not meet the demand. It is estimated that total 1952 world production of asbestos fibers of all varieties approximated 1,600,000 tons, with Canada supplying 966,382 tons (I), or 60 per cent of all fiber mined.Asbestos fiber brokers continually are offering odd-lot samples of chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite fibers to manufacturers, •quoting fantastic prices for tonnages •varying from just a few to 50 or more in a month. In many cases, the samples are not properly graded and contain quantities of rock impurities and finely ground dust.When vendors submit samples of asbestos fibers, the manufacturer should consider• them in terms of price, quality, quantity, and as possible substitutes for fibers currently used in his products.Grading of these odd-lot fibers in most cases has been poorly done, with resultant non-uniform fiber lengths. In some instances, a number of miscellaneous lots of fibers have been .blended for sale. This blending produces a fiber that is difficult for the manufacturer to accept as a substitute for the well-standardized Canadian fibers."

IN no part of the world other than a small area in Pennsylvania is anthracite mining an industry of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a state rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all the country's fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with a serious problem of water accumulation in many of the mines, a problem that must be solved in the near future if progressively higher mining costs are to be avoided. It cannot be solved by the operating companies without state or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work required, the diversity of interests of the coal and surface ownerships, the hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affected outside the mining region. 'The costs of abating the ever-increasing surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it has occurred are beyond the eco¬nomic resources of the operating managements.

Progressively more stringent emission limits and advances in regulations and enforcement have made air compliance more difficult for metallurgical facilities. This has historically required improved collection and treatment of stack sources. Fugitive emission reductions are now increasingly required to achieve compliance. Typically small in magnitude, fugitive emissions have a disproportionate impact on ground level concentrations, can be visible to the public and can influence workplace health and safety. Moreover, these emissions are complex, as they are spread over multiple sources, distance and time and are affected by various activities and conditions. As such it is difficult to find, define and monitor these emissions and their impacts. This difficulty translates to the design of emission reduction measures and operational requirements. This paper presents an overview or ‘heuristic’ of fugitive emissions management for compliance in existing operations. This includes aspects such as the impact of regulations on project scope, approaches to developing a comprehensive emission inventory, considerations for solution development and the plant’s role in sustaining compliance once achieved. Case studies are presented to demonstrate how portions of this approach have been applied.

WITHIN a period considerably less than two decades, the engineering view of alloy steels has greatly changed-both as to their composition, and applications. Inasmuch as the elements used in manufacturing alloy steels are substantially the same as those which have been used for the past two or three generations, a statement like the foregoing may reasonably call for some explanation. The first commercial use of alloy steels in this country dates back to the sixties of the last century, when one of the earliest alloy steel patents, covering the use of chromium, was taken out by Bauer. About ten years later, German and French toolmakers began to introduce tungsten into tool steels. Developments along this line were more or less static for 25 years or more, the tool steel, compositions progressing along lines worked out by Mushet and one or two others in Europe. The next step in advance, made by Taylor and White inn the late nineties, consisted of heat-treating the alloy steels to enable much higher cutting speeds, thus introducing what soon became known as "rapid" or "high-speed" steels. All these developments being aimed toward the improvement of cutting tools, the compositions made were essentially of a hard, brittle nature. Following a different line of development started in the seventies, naval ordnance material began to embrace the nickel steels. These were rapidly popularized, became, and still are, with the addition of one or more elements, as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, standard for heat-treated armor plate. During that period, however, no notable uses were made of alloy steels for engine parts or other high-stress parts where they are now considered indispensable; moreover, the present-day use of metals in the chemical industries was probably not even imagined. After the turn of the century, the necessity for making heavy-duty. machine parts, and especially the develop¬ment of the automobile, caused alloy steels to rapidly supplant plain carbon steels for engineering purposes.

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.

INASMUCH as galena and sphalerite flotation concentrates are being produced that contain over 95 per cent galena or sphalerite, it is not unreasonable to believe that a flotation concentrate assaying at least 80 per cent of native gold can he secured provided the gold is free. As yet, little if any fundamental information has been published concerning the flotation of free gold either alone or in the presence of sulfides. So far, we are unable to make as complete a separation of gold from sulfide minerals by flotation as is possible in, the separation of one sulfide from another by this method. An introductory study of the flotation of several free gold ores has been made in our Utah laboratories. For this study three general types of gold ores were chosen, namely: (1) Quartzite containing 0.26 oz. gold per ton in which no base metals are present; (2) sulfide ore (2.04 oz. Au; 1.31 oz. AO containing pyrite as the only sulfide present and the gold free; and (3) oxidized ore (1.10 oz. Au; 0.70 oz. Ag) from an oxidized zone of the vein from which sulfide ore (No. 2) was taken; little sulfide iron was present.

Ground control problems caused by multiple-seam interaction frequently sterilize coal reserves. Interaction mechanisms differ for overmining and undermining and are controlled by mining, spatial. and geologic conditions at each site. A multiple-seam interaction analysis software program, UGLY (Uppersearn Gateroad Longwall Stability), has been used to evaluate sterilization of coal reserves due to overmining at three locations. Four case histories were reviewed to determine the effectiveness of improved ground control in mitigating interaction effects.

"The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (BJKNTC) site is located in the northeastern portion of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park area of Queens, N.Y. The site occupies some of the most difficult subsurface conditions for construction in the New York City (NYC) metropolitan area, with unique challenges from geotechnical, seismic and foundation design perspectives.At the USTA site, Paleozoic crystalline bedrock is found at a depth of roughly 300 to 400 ft (90 to 120 m) below grade. The geologic history of the site is complicated, starting from the early Pleistocene, when the ancient Hudson River temporarily changed course, flowing across Queens enroute to the Atlantic. It eventually carved a deep valley through the Cretaceous soils, in some places all the way down to bedrock. A series of glaciers advanced and retreated across the region during the Pleistocene times, filling the deep valley with layers of assorted glacial soils. At its southern edge, the last major glacier to flow across the region built up a ridge at the southern tip of Flushing Meadows known as the Harbor Hill terminal moraine. This ridge blocked the valley forming a dam, so as ice started melting away the valley filled up with a lake fed by glacial meltwater. Layers of clean outwash sand and varved silt and clay filled the glacial lake. The ice did not retreat in a steady manner, instead periodically readvancing over the previously deposited soil in the lake, then retreating far enough to let the lake drain temporarily into Long Island Sound, before readvancing again.As a result of this repeated sequence of retreat, advance, retreat, etc., there are places where a “crust” of desiccated soil formed when the lake drained, and areas with interlayers of outwash sand where ice readvanced into the lake. When the ice melted north of Long Island Sound, the glacial lake filling Flushing Meadows drained forming Flushing Creek. During the Holocene (roughly the last 11,000 years), as ice melted further away and sea-level rose, low lying areas filled with river sands and marine clays, along with coastal marsh deposits. Table 1 lists the soil design properties on site and Figure 1 exhibits the geologic section across the site."

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a critical mineral is one that is essential to the economic well -being of a nation and whose supply may be disrupted due to geological, geopolitical or environmental factors (Nassar et al., 2020). For example, REEs are critical to the production of electricvehicle motors as well as wind turbines, yet China’s share of their global production rose to more than 95 percent in 2010 (IEA, 2021). China’s share has since declined, with production quotas dropping to nearly 70 percent by 2023 (Statista, 2023). This and similar situations with many of the critical minerals raise deep global concerns about supply-chain vulnerabilities (Bauer et al., 2011). Critical minerals are used in the production of renewable energy, electronics, agricultural products and common household items (McLemore, 2020). As the global demand for these minerals continues to grow, it is not sufficient to rely solely on scaling up production from existing operations. While increasing production from known deposits can provide short-term relief, long-term resource security requires discovering new, economically viable mineral resources. One of the most effective ways to secure future supply is through mineral exploration, which increases the global inventory of critical minerals and also minimizes risks posed by market monopolies and political instability. The major challenge of mineral exploration lies not only in identifying mineralized deposits but also in determining whether discovered concentrations are sufficient to warrant further investigation and development. A fundamental concept in this decision-making process is using cut-off grade. In this article, cut-off grade refers to the minimum concentration of minerals required to justify further exploration efforts based on factors such as type and size of mineral deposit, mining and processing technologies, associated byproducts/coproducts and the market price of these minerals. Typically, economic cut-off grades are used to determine whether a mineral deposit can be mined profitably. However, this article focuses on preliminary cut-off grades needed to establish whether the amounts of critical minerals within a deposit are high enough to justify further exploration and detailed evaluations. By comparing mineral deposit grades, size, production and extraction technology, and other economic factors with established and active mines, exploration teams can estimate cut-off grades that justify further exploration.

The Alpine-Himalayan system, the only major active tectonic belt mainly exposed in a continental mass, is of increasing interest to exploration geologists as well as to theoreticians. Answers to the broader problems of plate tectonics are being sought in this intricate system where the geosynclinal concept was born and where the geotectonic cycle was first applied to metallogeny. The search is all the more intense because it involves scientists from more than a dozen countries with a stimulating variety in perspective. The international Geodynamics Project has allocated the Alpine-Himalayan system to two separate study groups with one directing its attention to the Alpine-Mediterranean region and the other giving consideration to the Himalayan region. This geographic division is accepted in this paper, with remarks being confined to the former and to the west of boundary zone between the European-Asian and the Southeast Asian plates as envisioned by Dewey and Bird (1970). The region is well-mapped in some parts and it includes some of the most intensely-studied geology, most classic mines, and newest orebody discoveries. Within the region, an Alpine-age copper-molybdenum metallogenic belt extends from Rumania to Pakistan. The belt can be considered in terms of plate tectonics, and there is the possibility of using plate tectonics concepts in exploration.

The world is rapidly becoming more ?green? i.e. energy conscious. Since mining and mineral processing are massive energy users, the mining industry is seeking ways to reduce its energy footprint. In mining and mineral processing operations, energy is often the most expensive cost item. Comminution, i.e. grinding, is frequently the most energy-intensive step between mine and metal. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are being installed in a rapidly growing number of ?hard rock? mineral processing operations. In the energy conscious cement industry, HPGR grinding has been standard practice for decades. HPGR is known to be energy-efficient; the question is how energy efficient? How can the energy efficiency of HPGR be enhanced? This paper reviews recent HPGR applications for the processing particularly of copper, gold, platinum, PGM-Ni-Cu and iron ores. HPGR technology is discussed with respect to energy efficiency. The harder the ore the greater the energy savings are likely to be. Typical energy savings of 10?20% can be expected when installing HPGR vs. a SAG mill. Wipf(2005) showed why conventional Bond Work index tests on HPGR product is likely to under-estimate the energy savings that can be achieved by installing HPGR. Energy efficiency of HPGR is, however, ore-specific. The biggest energy savings of HPGR tested thus far is 9.5 kWh/tonne claimed for Vista Gold?s Mt. Todd gold ore from Western Australia, a savings of over one-third of conventional SABC comminution energy. Several commercial scale iron-ore pellet feed plants install HPGR for fine-grinding of concentrate to increase the surface area of pellet feed in a manner that reduces overall energy consumption. Energy-consumption in comminution is, however, only part of the energy savings benefit story. HPGR typically also reduces the amount of steel lost through wear of mill liners and media. Marsden(2008) showed that when the energy that would have been consumed to produce the steel that is saved by applying HPGR is factored in, then the overall energy savings of HPGR is considerably greater. Johnson et al.(1988, 2005) tested HPGR in a flowsheet in which energy savings of around 50% can be expected if HPGR product screen oversize is recirculated to the HPGR. Innovative flowsheets have been proposed by Rule et al.(2008) and by Morley (2008) which are expected to result in significantly increased energy savings. HPGR applied in flowsheets in conjunction with coarse ore separation devices, e.g. ore sorting or DMS to remove barren waste from HPGR feed promises significantly greater energy efficiencies. Fine-grinding and ultra-fine grinding of ore or concentrates in conventional ball mills results in energy consumptions that increase exponentially with product fineness. Wipf (2009) presented a flowsheet in which he proposed the installation of HPGR ahead of the Aerosion ?Disintegrator? for ultra-fine grinding of ores and/or concentrates. This dry grinding arrangement is expected to achieve ap80 = 7 µm using up to 100 kWh/t less energy than could be achieved by wet ball milling. Using conventional comminution, an ore might require grinding to p80 = 45µm (? 325 mesh), for example, to liberate the valuable components, e.g. magnetite, from gangue, e.g. silica. Inter-particle comminution in HPGR may break some ores along grain boundaries thereby liberating valuable minerals from gangue at a much coarser particle sizes. Early magnetic separation rejection of silica gangue liberated from magnetite by HPGR at coarser grain sizes could further reduce downstream comminution energy consumption.

INTRODUCTION A nickel doesn't buy much anymore. That's even true in the cost of recovering nickel -- the commodity. A 5[C] per pound (11 [c] per kilogram) increase in the nickel price won't cover a 10-percent increase in fuel costs for processing laterite ores, nor will it cover a 10- percent increase in wages for recovering nickel from a sulphide ore. It won't even cover a 5- percent increase in the capital cost necessary to mine and process ocean nodules. The basis for this statement and a quantitative analysis of the variations in costs to recover nickel from different types of nickel ores will be discussed in this paper. During the early part of the 1970's, the interest in nickel and its potential development was shifting from Canada to the Pacific Basin area. Canadian growth rate was slowing and each additional increase in nickel capacity was very expensive (Argall, G.O., 1970). Laterite ores were attractive to developers since they were easy to mine at a low labor cost, and technologies were being developed that would allow the recovery of nickel in marketable forms (Mohide, T.P., Warden, C.L., Mason, J.D., 1977). During the last decade, new laterite production was achieved in the Philippines and Botswana, and a significant increase in production from Indonesia and New Caledonia occurred. However, recent reports on nickel identify numerous problems plaguing the industry, i.e., high energy costs that are forcing shutdowns (INCO, 1980), (Mohide, T.P., Warden, C.L., Mason, J.D., 1977), high Canadian sulphide mining labor costs (Anon., 1976), and rapid inflation of nickel capital costs (Anon., 1981b). No definitive study has been made to determine how sensitive the total cost of production is to rising energy, labor, or capital costs, or to identify to what extent increased byproduct revenues could be used to offset these production costs. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the effects of increases in energy, labor, capital costs, and by-product credits on the future cost of production from nickel reserves and/or resources. METHODOLOGY OF ANALYSIS In order to evaluate the sensitivity of nickel production costs to changes in energy, labor, and capital costs, and in byproduct revenues, an analysis was made of existing and proposed nickel operations, their costs, and their sensitivity to change. The data for these analyses were obtained from numerous sources including international govern¬ment and university publications, professional journals, company reports, private communications, U.S. Bureau of Mines contracts, and estimates by Bureau of Mines personnel. These data were collected, in part, as an ongoing effort of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System (MAS) to systematically measure and classify identified mineral resources according to their respective extraction technologies, economics, and commercial availability. The MAS Program is currently evaluating the present and potential availability of nickel to the United States in relation to mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, leaching, transportation, infrastructure, environment, land use, labor, productivity, technology efficiencies, operating capacities, deposit life, and political factors. As a summary of this data, the following briefly describes nickel ore types as each relates to energy, labor, capital, and byproducts. Sulphide Operations Nickel is currently available from sulphide deposits. Roughly 55 percent of the current world nickel production in market economy countries is from sulphide ores, although only about 20 percent of the known land-based nickel reserves and/or resources are sulphides (INCO, 1981). In 1979, the Western World sulphide reserves were estimated at about 9.2 million metric tons of nickel (Little, A.D., 1979). Sulphide ores are typically mined underground, thus resulting in high mining costs; however, these ores can often be upgraded by flotation prior to final nickel recovery and require about one-third of the energy required to recover nickel from laterites (Anon., 1981c). In addition, nickel in sulphide ores may be associated with economically recoverable byproducts, which include copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and other precious metals. Laterite Operations Forty-five percent of current nickel production is from laterite deposits. Laterite deposits account for 80 percent of the known land-based nickel reserves and/or resources (INCO, 1981). In 1979, the Western World laterite reserves were estimated at over 35 million metric tons of nickel (Little, A.D., 1979). Nickeliferrous laterites are residual soils formed by weathering, typically under tropical or near tropical conditions. They can be easily mined by open-cut methods, but generally cannot be beneficiated; thus, recovery of nickel must entail processing of the total mined ore. Usually, these ores have high moisture content (20 to 30 percent by weight) that result in additional fuel costs to dry the ore. Nickel silicates, garnierites, are, processed by pyrometallurgical methods; limonite nickel oxides are normally leached. Byproduct cobalt is not recovered from most ferronickel operations, and is only recovered to a limited extent from many leach operations.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE term "pipe-vein" has recently been applied in this country to certain deposits of lead ore in magnesian limestone. The use of the term has been twofold. It has been revived as a term found in textbooks on mineral veins, with the implied or declared assertion that the ore-deposits thus named in this country are similar to those which have borne the title abroad. It has also been advanced as an appropriate name for a new class of deposits, even if such a class had not previously been recognized. In either case, the assumption is that pipe-veins form a group or class by themselves, and are not merely interior and subordinate features in larger deposits. The peculiar mining law of the United States, which regards " the vein," whatever that may be, as the basis of title, lends a special interest to these claims. But the object of this paper is rather to discuss the subject from the standpoint of geology and technical literature. I shall briefly answer two questions : (1) What are pipe-veins as described in technical literature? and (2) Is the name appropriate or necessary for a new class of deposits ?
