For several decades, the minerals industry has used leaching techniques to extract metals from rocks whose grade was too low to be treated profitably using conventional metallurgical techniques, and, as of 1972, about 15% of domestic copper production was derived using leaching methods (Beall 1). Increasing interest is currently being directed toward solution mining, particularly with respect to copper, for basically two reasons. In the first place, geological exploration has outlined several copper deposits of large tonnage and 1m', grade which are buried at sufficient depth to preclude open-pit mining which would make such mineral deposits ore deposits. Nevertheless, these occurrences provide significant potential if they could be treated by chemical leaching in situ. Secondly, the porphyry deposits of the western united States, which provide by far the largest percentage of domestic copper, do not terminate geometrically with sharp borders. These large disseminated bodies commonly decrease in grade laterally away from volumes of rock containing ore grade metallization, and the distinction between ore and waste is strictly economic. In order to extract ore grade material from the ground, a significant amount of rock containing sub-ore-grade copper must also be removed which, when placed on dumps, is amenable to solution mining. These two considerations clearly indicate the reasons for the growing interest in solution , leaching techniques--namely the ability to exploit deeply buried low grade deposits and the expansion of reserves in deposits currently under production.

AN interesting feature among the mining structures, on the Mesabi. iron range is the iron ore stacker erected in 1934 at the Mesabi Chief washing plant at Keewatin, Minn. It is built of structural steel, and carries a system of belt conveyors which collects the washed product of the plant and places it on a stockpile for subsequent shipment. Although the only one of its kind in the Lake Superior iron district, installations of similar nature have been used elsewhere in the handling of coal and gravel and in earthwork construction. The reasons for stocking Lake Superior iron ores may be as various and diversified as the methods used in building the piles. At the under¬ground mines the existence of the huge piles in evidence at each active shaft is due, principally, to climatic conditions in this north country where the shipping period is much shorter than the operating season. Conversely, at the washing. plants it may be desirable to stockpile washed ores because the shipping season is commonly of longer duration than the period during which the plants may be operated. Pure talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4010(OH)2). Pyrophyllite, although it resemble: talc in certain physical properties and uses, is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4010(OH)2) - like kaolin, except that kaolin has a somewhat different composition (Al2Si205(OH)4) and structure. Soapstone can be considered essentially an impure talc grid when pulverized is used for many of the same purposes as talc. Massive, compact varieties of talc often are called steatite. PROPERTIES Talc and pyrophyllite are characterizes; by their softness (hardness on Mohs' scale, 1) their greasy feel, pearly luster, white color, and perfect basal cleavage. They have similar crystal structures, and this similarity explains the close resemblance of the two minerals in physical acid chemical properties. Talc is a good electrical insulator, resists the action of most acids and alkalies, and has an exceptional heat-retaining capacity. Its specific gravity is about 2.7.

That natural gas-gasoline can be used to advantage as a refrigerant is suggested by the fact that the "make" tanks and other parts of the equipment of gasoline plants frequently become coated with frost. The experiments reported in this paper confirm this assumption and indicate that volatile gasoline can be use used to advantage in many refrigerating plants. The Bureau of Mines is making a study of wax distillates in order to find out why satisfactory lubricating oils and waxes can be made easily from certain crude oils and only with difficulty from others. In the commercial distillation of crude petroleum it is customary to separate the distillates into the following groups: (A) Gasolines and naphthas, (B) Kerosenes, (C) Gas oil, and (D) Wax distillate (consisting mostly of light lubricating oil together with small amounts of paraffin Wax).

Oklahoma City is undergoing a replacement program for an existing 66in (1.675m) water pipeline that conveys raw water from Atoka Reservoir to the City. This pipeline currently crosses the Canadian River on elevated piers and is subject to flood hazards. To replace the existing pipeline and mitigate flood damage concerns, two parallel microtunnels will be constructed below the river channel. Access is from construction shafts located near the midpoint of the tunnels; opposing drives are launched from each shaft. This geometry dictated shafts of significant depth – exceeding 120 ft. (37m). To accommodate the casing pipe segments and microtunneling machines, a minimum shaft diameter of approximately 34 ft. (10.4m) was required. Due to the difficult geologic setting, a reinforced secant pile compression ring is specified by contract in the top 70 ft. (21.3m) of these construction shafts to provide a very low permeability support system.

Co-disposal of partly-dewatered mixed-plant rejects (MPR) from coal processing into spoil dumps is gaining favour amongst Australian coalmine operators in preference to conventional tailings disposal methods which require a tailings dam. Owing to their often low permeabilities and high degrees of saturation, MPR materials may be prone to the development of excess pore pressures when covered by spoil during routine dump advancement. The likelihood of dump failure will increase if these pore pressure regimes and the associated delay of shear strength development are not accounted for during waste dump design. To date however, little is known about these pore pressure regimes due to the complexities associated with their in situ measurement.This paper describes the in situ measurement of pore pressures in a cell of MPR placed within a coalmine spoil dump. Four vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) were placed within a cell that was then filled with MPR and allowed to consolidate under self-weight before advancing an adjacent tiphead across the cell. The VWPs recorded the transient pore pressures during MPR placement and dump construction, and their interpretations are described within the context of laboratory measured parameters. "Atlas Copco is introducing a new patented method for full-face boring. This paper presents the basic principles of the boring action and discusses the present experience regarding performance and costs. The Atlas Copco ""Full-facers"" are designed for hard-rock applications, although they are successfully boring in soft ground without major changes. The unique patented boring principle referred to as the 'Undercutting Method' permits these machines to bore, economically, in harder ground than machines based on the 'crushing principle'. This is mainly due to considerably lower cutting-tool costs, as the tungsten carbide tips only are in contact with one-third of the bored volume. The remaining rock is 'undercut' and peels off from a slight back pressure.The undercutting method also permits boring of non-circular headings and Atlas Copco has already manufactured two machines for rectangular drifts. This concept could revolutionize development work in mines employing trackless equipment."

"The Bureau of Mines has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of completely ""rock-dusting all coal mines, except anthracite mines, in every part whether in damp or dry condition."" Every open accessible part of, the, mine without exception should be thoroughly rock-dusted, including parallel entries, air courses, trackless entries, crosscuts, and rooms to within at least 40 feet of every coal face. Very few mines have followed this recommendation and warning, with the result that there have been explosions not only in mines which have not used rock dust but also in so-called rock-dusted mines. Following a number of mine explosions it has been reported that the mine was rock-dusted,"" whereas it is probable that only some of the haulage roads had been given a hurried application of rock dust and in most instances not as much as 5 per cent of the mine was really rock-dusted. That is not rock-dusting.Some conscientious, well-meaning mining men have felt that rock-dusting of haulage roads would effectively stop an explosion; however, when shown, through widespread explosions in mines ""well rock-dusted"" according to the above method, that leaving large areas undusted, furnishes paths through which a violent explosion may travel, these mining men have realized the necessity of thorough rock-dusting and have adopted this explosion-prevention method.The Mather Collieries mine, Pickands, Mather and Co., operators, at Mather, Pa., was the first mine in Pennsylvania to receive, full credit for rock-dusting under the new 'stringent ruling of the Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau, the provisions of which require that:"

Probably the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion. Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened UP the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi. and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The Process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

This short paper deals with the subject of research and its relation to productivity. All who have stopped to even think about industrial re-search and its impact on the nation-al economy take for granted that research and development are pre-requisite to increased productivity. It is another matter, however, to identify and properly evaluate the many factors entering into the relationship between the two. Some studies are currently underway in the United States on the subject, but, so far, nothing much in the way of conclusive data has come to light. In Canada, we have not yet even produced any statistical figures on national productivity, although work is now being done on this subject and information will soon be available. The usefulness of being able to measure the benefits of investment in re-search and development in terms of industrial growth or productivity need not be laboured for the benefit of those interested in research management.

"A review of the major renovation of the fifty-year old C-I headframe facilities at NERCQ's Con Mine, Yellowknife, N. W.T. is provided. The project was complete with only two 3-day shutdowns of the facility .Work consisted of four major phases: structural reinforcement of the adjoining mill building prior to dismantling; relocation of virtually all mine and mill utilities which transited the headframe collar en route from the adjacent powerhouse; dismantling of the entire headframe facility and portion of the mill building, including the removal of asbestos siding; and erection of a new headframe, idler rower, collarhouse and mill wall.This paper describes the work and methods used by NERCQ, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited, Acres International Limited, and others to bring the project to a successful completion. The history of the project is discussed from the planning phase through construction, including; design, procurement, and construction scheduling. The paper discusses the unique elements of the project, the problems encountered, and the methods used to achieve success.IntroductionThe Con Mine is a 800 tpd gold operation located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Originally owned and operated by Cominco Limited , the Con Mine was sold in December 1986 to NERCO Minerals Company, and officially renamed NERCO Con Mine, Ltd. The Con Mine has been in operation for over 50 years. The first gold brick ever produced in the Northwest Territories was poured at the Con Mine in 1938. The original C-1 shaft was sunk in 1937 to a depth of 235 ft. In 1941 the shaft was deepened to a depth of 950 ft, and the original timber head frame was replaced with a steel structure. Following the discovery of the Campbell Shear in 1946, the C-l shaft was again deepened to its present depth of 2443 ft. Over the years, mine production gradually moved deeper and further from the C-l shaft."

The opening session of the Forty-seventh Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order at 10:00 o'clock a.m., Thursday, June 7, 1951, in the junior Ballroom of the Hotel Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, with President Arthur B. Foulger presiding. PRESIDENT FOULGER: We are a little bit late getting started, gentlemen. We have a few more members out there to register and we will wait just a few minutes until they are finished and then we will begin. The Honorable Earl J. Glade won't be here until 2:00 o'clock this afternoon. I understand lie was unavoidably detained so we are going to go down this program pretty rapidly when we get started, but we want to wait until those gentlemen still unregistered come in. Gentlemen, we will try and start now. Mr. Whiteside suggests that the minutes for last year probably should be read. However, they were published in the proceedings for last year, so I presume it will be just as well to dispense with the minutes and get going here before we lose too much time.

AT THE inception of the cyanide process and its adaptation to the practice of gold and silver metallurgy much difficulty was experienced in applying it to auro-cupriferous ores, both in economy of treatment and recovery of the gold from solution. The presence of copper in the ore effected a high chemical consumption of cyanide during treatment, and in the solvent solution, it retarded the precipitation of the gold on zinc shavings. The coating of the copper on the zinc shavings presented even worse difficulties than the increased cyanide consumption as most ores contain a small amount of copper. This interference of copper led to the use of other precipitating methods and attempts to recover the cyanide which was consumed during ore treatment. Of the other methods used, electrolytic precipitation was the most practical until a better understanding of the application of zinc shavings and zinc dust developed. In September, 1905, a patent entitled, "Method for Recovering Precious Metals from Solution," was granted to Isaac Anderson and Michael Scanton. This method is adaptable to precious metal ores containing a small percentage of copper but has never been extensively used or perfected. The process has

Advanced process and equipment analytics have been around for a while. However, with accessible IT infrastructure and site maturity, it is possible to analyse, monitor, and control processing plants and equipment easily. These various disparate systems provide different reports requiring the involvement of various personnel and attention to different reporting platforms. For efficient harnessing of the systems? capabilities, as well as effective improvement and monitoring of process and equipment, a single point of entry is required. A process and equipment optimization solution was required at a concentrator in South Africa, focussing on the product stream of platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate from the UG2 Reef. The investigation of data to identify strategies for optimization was required to allow visibility into plant operations to guide operators, an easier method to identify process loop problems, identification of imminent equipment failures, and advanced process control to optimize throughput and stability. A collaborative effort between the client and General Electric Intelligent Platforms (GEIP) investigated data-driven solutions to each of the problems. With the focus on process optimization and asset monitoring, as well as equipment monitoring, a combination of approaches was utilized to address the various problem areas that were identified. Each was implemented separately in the control layer of the plant IT infrastructure. The integration was done in a centralized web-based reporting tool that integrated the detailed results from the various solutions. On the process control side, monitoring of control loops was included by calculating performance statistics that were reported daily to identify sub-optimally performing control loops and indicating potential problems. The advanced process control solution for this site includes a surge tank controller, stabilizing flow through the flotation banks, and preventing the surge tank from overflowing or running empty. Equipment monitoring was investigated, for preventative maintenance, by making use of statistical data models to indicate imminent equipment failure. These predicted alarm events included the cause for failure, drilling down, and allowing focus on a specific variable for preventative action. The results included a more stable flow through the mill, with fewer stoppages due to surge tank overflows or running empty. The causes for process drift could be identified and operators could react early. Alarms warning of equipment failure 2½ and 4 months in advance were identified in an offline analysis.

A numerical modelling back-analysis exercise was carried out at a WA gold mine at which early signs of seismicity (rock noise, scatts from active faces) were becoming apparent as depth of mining increased towards the 500 m mark. Some strain bursting had occurred and it was necessary to discover what the implications of this were for greater depth. The aim of the modelling was to: 1. Establish a correlation between observed ground conditions and model predicted damage, in overstressed areas of the mine. 2. Use this correlation to forecast rock mass damage and ground control requirements for proposed future stoping panels at greater depth. Good correlation has been achieved between observed rock mass damage, and a 3D Finite-Element RS3 model, run in elastic mode. Two candidate stress field orientations were modelled. The model parameter best fitting the observations was the Strength Factor (SF), the ratio of strength/stress. The good match (correlation coefficient of 0.7) between observed and modelled suggests that the elastic approach is justified for the depth range and rock mass properties analysed. The correlation also enabled a link between observed damage and installed ground support performance. Using the linear best-fit between observed and modelled, a forecasting exercise was carried out using the same RS3 model, modified to include future stoping. The resulting damage and ground support categories were obtained from the modelled SF for each proposed stoping level. Also, a series of generic geometries was assessed to investigate the impact of varying stope face lead/lag distance, sill pillar height and stope pillar size, on ground conditions. The key finding of the generic geometries were: • Ground support schemes have been defined for the expected conditions. • All ore drives are expected to have significant damage in the backs and rehabilitation. • Lead/lag distance not to exceed 10 m. • Sill pillar/level intervals of less than 20 m require an increase in ground support scheme. • Pillar sizes for maintaining footwall and hanging wall stability should be at least 10 m × 5 m.

Static pile load tests were performed in order to evaluate bearing capacities and mechanical behaviors of three different pile types: (1) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar reinforcements inside the concrete, (2) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and (3) conventional drilled shaft (reinforcement concrete pile). The material elastic moduli obtained from pile load tests of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts with and without rebar reinforcement were found out to be similar. On the other hand, the elastic modulus of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts is almost twice as high as that of the conventional drilled shaft. The ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar, the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and the conventional drilled shaft were 9,810, 7,848, and 4,414kN, respectively. The results of these load tests reveal that the ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with reinforcement and that without reinforcement are 2.22 times and 1.78 times greater that that of the drilled shaft. The structural failures of the steel-concrete composite drilled shafts occurred either at the boundary between tip of steel casing and rock-socketed concrete.

"An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.IntroductionIndustrial effluents from hydrometallurgical and mineral processing operations often contain high sulfate and metal concentrations posing significant disposal problems, which require urgent solution to avoid serious environmental contamination. In such waste liquors, sulfate and heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, zinc and iron originate from the chemical or biological oxidation of exposed sulfide minerals. Reduction of sulfate and precipitation of toxic metal ions from industrial wastes is essential from the viewpoint of environmentally acceptable waste disposal and recovery of associated strategic metals.Many of these heavy metals are essential for metabolic activity of bacterial cells at low levels. But they exert toxic effects at concentrations encountered in polluted water. Removal of toxic metals through biological reduction of sulfates from industrial waste waters have been practiced for several decades. Metal remediation through common physicochemical techniques such as oxidation-reduction, chemical precipitation, filtration, electrochemical treatment, evaporation, ion exchange and reverse osmosis processes is expensive and not suitable in the case of voluminous effluents containing complexing organic matter and low metal concentrations. Further, strong and contaminating reagents are used for desorption, resulting in toxic sludge and secondary environmental pollution. Biotechnological approaches can be more efficient and cost effective for detoxification of such effluents. Biotreatment/ bioremoval offers several advantages over conventional chemical and physical treatment technologies, especially for diluted and mixed contaminants. Biological detoxification, which involves the use of microbes to detoxify and degrade environmental contaminants, has received increasing attention in recent years (Iwamoto and Nasu, 2001). In addition, valuable metals can be recovered from metal sulfide sludge (Boonstra et al., 1999)."

Oil from shales has long been a source of fuel in foreign countries; however, in the fuel economy of the United States this source is classed as a reserve for future needs. In fad, shale oil has never been produced here in quantities necessary to establish oil-shale utilization as a sustained industry. The first known resources of stored energy that man endeavored to utilize were probably wood and water, and from these he directly obtained heat and power, respectively. With the evolution of man came the search for and the development and use of other natural fuel resources, the series progressing through the solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels until today those of one type can be converted into another, depending upon the use for which they are intended. The most important fuels are those that appear naturally in the most concentrated, conveniently obtainable, and usable forms. With the discovery of each new and more concentrated fuel there has been an appreciable increase in the importance of and number of devices for converting these fuels into energy.
