In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

The application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and undcr varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarinc geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions. Introduction The following paper is in no sense a contribution to knowledge; it is merely an attempt to indicate some of the benefits that may be expected from the use of aerial photographs in geologic mapping and to mention some inherent limitations. The writer has used aerial photographs in his own work for the past 13 years and has had ample opportunity to observe their use in the hands of others. From this experience certain conclusions have been drawn, which may be helpful to those using aerial photographs for the first time. It must he remembered that a photograph of the earth's surface can delineate only that which the eye can see; therefore the geologist should not expect more from an aerial photograph than he would be able to observe were he in the photographer's airplane looking at the area to be photographed. Theoretically, if the geologist had sufficient artistic ability, he could draw as good a geologic map from his position in the plane as he could from observation of the photograph. Practically this cannot be done because the airplane moves at a high rate of speed, which in itself prohibits detailed observation and, no matter how great the geologist's artistic ability, he could not reproduce the detail that can be recorded by a camera. An aerial photograph is a picture map of an area. The picture may be studied in the office until the geologist is thoroughly familiar with every minute detail of the surface of the ground he is about to geologize. There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

For more than 20 years the author had the privilege of working closely on a number of R&D projects with Lucy Rosato and her team at CEZinc. Several of these projects were driven from the sustainability agenda that Lucy Rosato championed as an innovation leader that supported research collaborations. Highlights from this highly rewarding collaboration are to be presented in this paper. In particular we will deal with the following works-topics: (a) iron control via solvent extraction as alternative to jarosite precipitation; (b) production of high-density gypsum by controlled neutralization of simulated zinc plant process/waste waters; (c) selenium removal from weak acid solutions; (d) electrolyte purification by cementation; and (e) manganese control by oxidative precipitation with SO2/O2.

Reutilization of waste printed circuit boards (PCB) can not only prevent potential environmental pollution, but also achieve recycling of secondary resources. Study on recycling of discarded PCB belongs to the front edge of environmental pollution prevention and resource recycling. In order to effectively crushing waste PCB, and solve the problem of secondary pollution of fugitive odor and dust during the crushing process, a wet impacting crusher was adopted to achieve comminution liberation of PCB in water medium. 96.79% of the crushed yield was distributed in ?2mm, and metal took 97.18% in this grade of production. Size distribution of PCB particles was characterized double peaks at the sizes of ?1+0.5mm and ?0.074mm. A double Rosin-Rammler function, is called DRR function, is put forward to describe the size distribution of PCB particles. The DRR function of cumulative weight percentage oversize of PCB was non-liner fitted by self-defining DRR function of the Origin 7.0. The evaluation indexes of the fitting results are the correlation coefficients R2 of 0.9994 and residual E of 0.18671, those show that DRR function is perfectly accurate. Based on the research the mechanical separation and material properties of PCB, a wet process of reclaiming metals from PCB using a new style separator ? tapered diameter separation bed (TDSB) in water medium was designed, and the related separation mechanism was studied. The fluid field of the tapered diameter separation equipment was simulated by the Ansys Flotran software, the variation laws of the velocity in each position in the fluid field as well as the equation of axial distribution sectional max velocity were analysed according to the simulation result, the stress change and motion trajectory of the pellet in the certain fluid field were analysed. The results show that the expanding tubular structure of the varied diameter separation bed indicates gradually decreasing velocity of water flow along the axis, assuming a certain angle in the bed, as a result of the gravity?s influence, and there was corresponding change to the distribution of the flow velocity, thus the whole formed a special fluid field where velocity variations exist in different positions. When the material passed through the fluid field along with the water flow, as a result of the difference to the particle density, the granularity and the shape, there would appear the difference to the motion trajectory as well as the movement distance under the action of the fluid: The lower density materials discharge along with water flow, but the higher density materials would be kept in bottom of the bed and discharge through material mouth. Therefore, light and heavy products were separated effectively according to the density. Using tapered diameter separation bed to process the ?1mm size crushed material of waste printed circuit boards, with the discharge of water 5.5m3/h, feed-rate of the material 250g/min and with an obliquity 35°, product with 93.92% in integration efficiency and 93.73% in recovery ratio of the metal were obtained by the primary separation. Compared with other mechanical methods, the range of particle size was broaden using the TDSB to recovery metals from PCB, and lower limit size of separation almost approach to 0. An innovative process of ?wet impact crushing+ classifying+ tapered diameter separation? recycling metals from waste PCB was developed.

For metallurgical plant design, it is necessary to progress through successive phases of test work, piloting and process development before involving all the other engineering disciplines and “freezing” the process design criteria and flow sheet. This process usually relies upon the experience, skills and personal preferences of various technology providers, study and engineering entities, test work and metallurgical laboratories and, most importantly, the owner’s team and its operators. Current industry trends include lower grades, more complex orebodies, geometallurgy in defining orebody variation and design envelopes, more common “hybrid” plant processes and the market demands for more reliable, timely and predictable early plant performance.This paper will discuss interaction of these trends and provide guidelines for the level of detail and technical complexity required for a number of different “typical” examples. The paper will pay particular attention to the study definition level translated into the required detail and certainty needed by the overall process “owner” and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) equipment suppliers to ensure the best real plant performance. Some recent case studies will be discussed. In many projects, at a late stage of project definition, it has become common practice to undertake a “value engineering” phase. Although it could be argued that this should be undertaken earlier, it is largely driven by an overall need to reduce capex and “optimise” the perceived “fat” built into the project during the detailed design process. This value engineering can be very counterproductive to project timing and operational performance and warrants discussion.The paper is intended to promote discussion on a topic of wide interest. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been developed based upon field data collected from a longwall mine in New South Wales, Australia to study the behaviour of goaf gas flow in both active and sealed goaf areas. A base CFD model was built to represent the goaf situations when the active longwall retreats near the finish-off line. Results from the base model were calibrated and compared against field goaf gas monitoring data. The base model was then used to carry out parametric studies to investigate a number of operational scenarios and their impact on goaf gas behaviour. CFD modelling results indicate that the overall goaf gas flow pattern changes as the operating longwall retreats towards finish-off line. In all cases, oxygen penetration into the active goaf remains high, reaching 15 per cent or higher, even at some 800 m behind the longwall face.The modelling results also indicated that it would be difficult for early detection of an active goaf heating (on the maingate side) based upon CO readings in the return airflow, as the main stream of the gaseous product will be flowing into the sealed deep goafs in adjacent longwall (LW) panels. Monitoring points (such as tube bundles and bag sampling points) should be selected at deep seated seals along the active goaf so that abnormal CO or C2H6 readings can be picked up for early detection and location of potential heating spots; goaf inertisation can be better achieved by injecting inert gas such as nitrogen at deeper points (>200 m) behind the operating longwall; the injection of in-seam drainage methane into the goaf areas will only have a limited impact on goaf inertisation as much of the injected methane will migrate towards deep and higher parts of the goaf due to its buoyancy effect.

This paper has formulated the methods, both medical and engineering, for the control of pneumokoniosis in the haematite-mining industry in West Cumberland, but this is only part of a general service to improve the lot of the worker in these mines, to make him a better and happier workman, and to permit him to enjoy his work and leisure in comfort and good health. This organization has now been functioning for more than ten years and the results are indeed heartening, but it is only as a result of constant vigilance from the mining and medical point of view that such a plan can operate efficiently. The human element and its full understanding is by no means the least of the problems.

The carbonizing properties of No. 2-bed coal from the Bartoy mine and No. 5- or Miller-bed coal from the Wilkeson-Miller mine, both at Wilkeson, Pierce County, Wash., were determined by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Tests were made in the 13-inch retort at 500°, 600°, and 700° C. and in the 18¬inch retort at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. Fischer low-temperature and United States Steel Corporation high-temperature assays were made and the results compared with those of the BM-AGA tests at corresponding temperatures. Agglutinating and plastic properties were determined, and chemical and petrographic analyses were made. The No. 2 bed is 58.5 to 88.0 inches thick at three points sampled in the Bartoy mine. The coal is 98 percent bright and contains only a trace of fusain. A composite of three mine samples contained 13.8 percent ash. The washed sample, which was used in the tests described herein, contained 11.4 percent ash, 2.2 percent moisture, and 0.6 percent sulfur upon the as-carbonized basis and 68.4 percent fixed carbon upon the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. The heating value was 15,183 B. t.u. per pound upon the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. No. 2 therefore ranks as a high-volatile A coal and is very high in that, rank. The ash softens at 2,910° F. Except for its ash content, which is higher than the limit of 9.0 percent specified by the American Society for Testing Materials, No. 2 coal fulfills the requirements of a coking coal. It also is classed as extremely friable, the friability being 88.0 percent. The agglutinating index (7.6 for the 15 : 1 ratio of silicon carbide to coal) is high, and the plasticity as indicated by the Gieseler test (60 divisions per minute) is low for a high-volatile A coal.

"Coal and gas outburst is an extremely complex dynamic disaster in coal mine production process which will damage casualties, equipment facilities and disorder the ventilation system by suddenly ejecting a great amount of coal and gas into roadway or working face. This paper analyzed the interaction among the three essential elements of coal and gas outburst dynamic system. A stress-seepage-damage coupling model was established which can be used to simulate the evolution of the dynamical system, and then the size scale of coal and gas outburst dynamical system was investigated. Results show that the dynamical system is consisted of three essential elements, coal-gas medium (material basis), geology dynamic environment (internal motivation) and mining disturbance (external motivation). On the case of C13 coal seam in Panyi mine, the dynamical system exists in the range of 8-12 m in front of advancing face. The size scale will be larger where there are large geologic structures. This research plays an important guiding role for developing measures of coal and gas outburst prediction and prevention. INTRODUCTIONCoal and gas outbursts are a complicated mine gas dynamic phenomenon that pose a serious threat to coal mine safety production. Since the first recorded coal and gas outburst occurring in Isaac coal mine of the Lule coal field in 1843, more than 40,000 outbursts have occurred in the world. China ranks first in outburst frequency and intensity. In recent 20 years, China on average increases 37 pairs of coal mines and more than 280 times outburst accidents every year (Yan, 2013). The coal and gas outburst occurred on Oct 20, 2004 in Daping Coal Mine, Zhengzhou Coal Group, caused serious gas explosions and ejected 1,894 tons of coal into the face, causing 148 fatalities. In recent years, despite implementation of numerous control measures, coal and gas outburst still occur frequently ash mining depth and mining intensity increase. The outburst mechanisms can be summarized in the following four aspects: the gas leading role hypothesis, the geostress leading role hypothesis, the chemical effect hypothesis, and combination hypothesis. The last hypothesis has won the acceptance of most scholars who consider that an outburst is the result of combined effect of stress, gas and coal (Yu, 1992).Numerous experimental measurements and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the permeability and damage development process in coal seam. Sobczyk, et al (2011) carried out a laboratory research of the influence of sorption processes on gas stresses leading to coal and gas outbursts. Wang, et al (2013, 2015) conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the rapid decompression and desorption induced energetic failure in coal using a shock tube apparatus. Xu, et al (2006) developed a coupled gas flow and solid deformation numerical model and applied to simulate the coal and gas outbursts in underground coal mines using RFPA2D-Gasflow. An, et al (2013) and Xue (2014) analyzed major parameters and the effect of gas desorption on outburst initiation and established a model of gas migration and mechanical processes during excavation."

"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. These processes are performed both dry and/or wet resulting in powdered or slurry end products.

This report presents information on 77 waterflood projects in 31 Montana oilfields. The study shows the locations of the projects, the sources and amounts of injection water, and the results in oil produced. Waterflooding, a secondary recovery technique, began in Montana about 40 years after the initial oil discovery in 1920. Often, the difference between water disposal by injection and pressure maintenance operations is not clear. Water injected at the projects in 1973 was 157.7 million barrels. In 1973, the 31 fields having waterflood projects produced 28.3 million barrels of oil valued at $88.4 million. Both in volume and value, this represents over 80 percent of the State's 1973 oil output. The projects are making possible the recovery of additional oil, thus contributing to the conservation of oil and lessening the impact of the current oil shortage.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated novel methods of stimulating petroleum production from reservoirs in the Appalachian Region. An important consideration in applying stimulative production methods is the control and removal of solid precipitates from the boreholes of production wells. Where paraffin-base crude oils are produced, as in the Appalachian Region, the accumulation of paraffin may be particularly troublesome. Paraffin deposition is a major production problem that has confronted the petroleum industry for many years. Although considerable effort has been expended by industry and government, a suitable solution has not been found because of the individuality and complex nature of the deposits. Remedial methods used to prevent or remove paraffin fall generally into four classes: (1) Chemical, (2) physical, (3) operative, and (4) combination. Each class has many subclasses that apply to particular problems in different oil- producing areas. Recently, chemical inhibitors and the sonic pump have assisted operators in preventing and removing paraffin deposits. Because these methods are relatively new, their degree of application has not been completely evaluated.

A significant basemetal province is recognised in the southern part of the Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia. Epigenetic stratabound carbonate hosted Pb-Ag-Zn mineral- isation occurs in dolomites of Tournasian age within a marginal marine transgressive carbonate and fine grained clastic sequence, spatially overlying the lagoonal facies of a Late Devonian reef complex. The deposits comprise coarse grained sulphide mineralisation characterised by high Pb:Zn ratios (10:1) and high silver (50 g/t) content. They occur at shallow depth, are flat to moderately dipping, and form a discontinuous mineralised trend at the margin of the Sorby Platform, which flanks a Precambrian basement high. Host rocks are predominantly sedimentary breccias and dolomitised footwall carbonates associated with a significant local unconformity transgressed by a siltstone cap rock sequence. The deposits are structurally related to synsedimentary growth faults, local basement highs and tensional en-echelon breccia systems. Fluid inclusion studies have concluded that mineralisation was deposited from a low temperature (85¦C-115¦C) saline ore forming solution. Lead isotope work reveals a Precambrian genetic source of the lead. Locally remnant textures after sulphates are recognised within the host sequence together with common bitumen and oil shows. Reduction of sulphate to H2S was possibly facilitated by either bacteria. activity, or by residual hydrocarbons which acted as a reducing agent. An alternative source of H2S may have been afforded by the thermal degradation of hydrocarbons. A 'mixing' genetic model is proposed for the mineralisation, which conceives the expulsion of metal enriched basinal brines followed by their precipitation as sulphides after mixing with locally derived reduced sulphur solutions at relatively shallow depths in their structural/stratigraphic sites of ore deposition.

The floatability of andalusite and associated minerals are studied and their action mechanisms of andalusite and associated minerals with collector alkyl benzene sulphonate are also studied. Through the mensuration of electrical potential and the infrared spectroscopy, as well as desorption tests, it is confirmed that the interaction of andalusite with sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), is in addition to physical adsorption, but also is chemical adsorption. The study results of the pure minerals are used for the flotation of actual andalusite mineral. By flotation from contain-ing 45.68% andalusite ore, the fine andalusite concentrate is gained which Andalusite grade is 85.88%, containing Al2O355.29% and Fe2O3 less than 1.5%.

A conventional mechanical anchor bolt consists of a smooth bar threaded at the anchor end, with a conical wedge, and a mechanical shell anchor. When the smooth bar is torqued, the conical wedge pushes the shell anchor against the borehole wall. Coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the deformation and stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand how a mechanical anchor performs in a coal rib. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted the study described in this paper to define the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of a mechanical rib bolt. Based on the strength of the coal seam and the conditions of the coal mines, the bolts were installed at different amounts of torque. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends on the coal strength, and the anchorage stiffness depends on the installation torque. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design. INTRODUCTION Rib falls are a serious hazard in underground coal mines. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Although resin bolts has been used increasingly in the last few years to control coal ribs, mechanical bolting (mainly expansion-shell bolts) is still used in many underground coal mines. Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 79% of the mines determine their rib support requirement based on the depth, mining height, and the loading conditions, of which 35% use the conventional mechanical bolts. Conventional mechanical bolts are preferable for rib support because they do not require the miners to be too close to the rib during rib bolting. Hence, using the conventional mechanical rib bolts can reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities during the installation process. The mechanical bolt or the point-anchored bolt is the oldest type of rock bolt that is still in use today. The point-anchored bolt is a tensioned bolt anchored down the hole with a mechanical expansion shell or a grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). Figure 1 shows the components of the mechanical anchor bolt. The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed smooth bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and sometimes a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type. The shell of the standard type is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the smooth bar is generally 5/8 in for the #5 bolt or 6/8 in for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the wedge down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall.
