INTRODUCTION Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts from Mendeleev Ridge, Chukchi Borderland, and Alpha Ridge, in the Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean, are similar based on morphology and chemical composition. The crusts are characterized by two- to four-layered stratigraphy. The chemical composition of the Arctic crusts differs significantly from hydrogenetic crusts from the North Pacific Prime Zone (PCZ; Hein et al., 2013), such as a high mean Fe/Mn ratio (2.6 versus 1.3) and low Si/Al ratio (1.8 versus 4.0), with lower Mn, Ca, Ti, P, Ba, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn and higher Si, Al, Mg, As, Li, V, Sc, and Th. Based on Arctic FeMn crust mineralogy, chemical composition, and growth rates, crust formation was dominated by three processes: Precipitation of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides from ambient ocean water, sorption of metals by the Fe and Mn phases, and fluctuating but large inputs of terrigenous debris (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). The Mn and Fe phases are hydrogenous and reflect bottom ocean-water chemistry and the aluminosilicate phase contains stable detrital minerals such as quartz, feldspars, zircon, monazite, and clay minerals. A precise method of studying the distribution of elements in FeMn crust phases is sequential leaching that dissolves four mineral phases of different stability step-by-step, in the following order: easily leachable phase, mostly bio-calcite; manganese oxides; iron oxyhydroxides; and residual aluminosilicate minerals (Koschinsky and Halbach, 1995). Twelve bulk crusts and crust layer samples obtained from six hydrogenous FeMn crusts were studied. Those crusts were collected during Russian (Arktika 2012) and USA (HLY0805, HLY0905, and HLY1202) research cruises from different parts of the Amerasia Basin (Mendeleev and Alpha Ridges, Chukchi Borderland). Samples were chosen for the sequential leaching experiments based on their morphology, location, and water depth. Hydrogenetic crust (D07-33) from the Tuvalu EEZ, central-west Pacific Ocean, was included in the experiment for comparison. Recovery during the four-step sequential leaching, with respect to the bulk analyses, was between 80% and 120%.

A model is discussed from which the work of adhcslon .tor liquid transition metals on aluminum oxide surfaces can he calculated, A close-packed (00011 oxygen surface on A12O3 is assumed with two different types of surface sites: one type involving metal-oxygen bonds and the other man der Waals into actions. The work of adhesion is thus expressed as the sum of these two bonsding free energies. Calculated works of adhesion for nickel, titanium, chromium, and zirconium on sapphire agree well with the experimentally determined quantities. The model is extentled to the calculation of the work of adhesion and shear stress required to remove a thin metal film from a sapphire substrate and is in good agreement with experimental values. The obsewed dependence of the work of adhesion on the free energy of oxide formation of the metal is shown to also provide an interpretation of the tittle dependence of thin-film adhesion. THIS paper presents a model for the type of bonding which occurs across a metal-A12O3 interface. The model is used to explain the results of two types of experiments in which such an interface exists: 1) the adhesion of thin metal films on Al2O3 substrates and 2) the wetting of A12O3 by liquid metal drops. The adhesion of thin films to various substrates has been the subject of a variety of investigations.'-' Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie,6 using the scratch test developed by Heavens,10 studied the adhesion of metallic films to glass substrates. Their observations for noble-metal film adhesion agree well with an adhesion model involving a van der Waals type of bonding between the film and the substrate. For films of metals whose free energy of oxide formation. ?F°f, has a negative value. Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie6 found a time-dependent adhesion with an initial value that can be interpreted in terms of van der Waals interactions but a larger terminal value which was related to ?F°f, Karnow-sky and Estill7 deposited films on sapphire at elevated temperatures and noticed no time dependence of film adhesion but a similar correlation with ?F°f. Because of the kinetic problems associated with thin-film adhesion it is desirable to examine adhesion in an equilibrium system. The wetting behavior of liquid-metal drops on Al2O3 provides such a system. Systems of this metal-ceramic type have been studied extensively.11 Humenik and Kingeryl2 have measured the wetting of A12O3 (and other substrates) by several metals and have pointed out that the wetting ability of these metals increases with increasing values of -?F°f. It is thus seen that thin-film adhesion and metal wetting on A12O3 are both related to the tendency of the metal to react with the surface oxide ions of the Al2O3 substrate and, because of this, both phenomena should be explainable by an appropriate model for the metal-Al2O3 interfacial bonding. In the sections that follow, wetting and adhesion data on A2O3 are reviewed and a model is presented by which these phenomena can be interpreted. ANALYSIS OF WETTING EXPERIMENTS In an equilibrium system involving a liquid-metal drop on a solid Al2O3 substrate, the work of adhesion, WAD, is defined by the Dupre, equation as WAD = ?s + ?L -?sL [1] where ?s and ?L are the surface free energies of the solid substrate and the liquid drop, respectively, and ?sL is the interfacial free energy. The work of adhesion is the work required to separate a unit area of the solid-liquid interface into two surfaces. The work of adhesion is usually determined from a sessile-drop experiment in which yL and the contact angle, ?, are measured. The Young-Dupr6 equation is then used to calculate WAD Wad = ?L (1+ cos ?) [2] The literature of this subject has been examined and Table I shows work of adhesion data for various liquid metals as measured on A12O3 substrates. During the course of the investigation of possible domestic sources of manganese, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled two manganese mineral deposits in northeastern Utah. The Daggett Chief claims are situated in the northern part of Daggett County,5 miles southwest of Manila, Utah, and approximately 57 miles from Green-River, Wyo. Owners of the property are J.E. Harris Of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nels Palleson of Manila, Utah, and J. P. Larson. The manganese occurs in a vein 6 to 8 feet wide in a shale and sandstone formation. Two distinct occurrences Of manganese are present Within the vein, and samples of each were subjected to testing. Lot A, representing .probably the major portion of the Manganese; was composed of nodules and veinlets of manganese oxides in a semicompact; gray, shaly formation. Lot B represented a 15-inch vein of dense iron-manganese ore. .Most of the laboratory work at Salt Lake City, Utah, was done on these two samples; but preliminary testing also was carried out on a small sample, physically similar to lot A, submitted by the owners.

"Shaft bottom structural systems are used in underground mining to support transfer of personnel, equipment and ore to and from underground to the surface. This paper first summarizes the evolution of design philosophy from a concrete tower supported on a concrete plug to the current structural steel design arrangement with unlined shaft walls, clear shaft bottom area with only a concrete housekeeping pad. Then the paper reviews the design parameters, analysis and design, and construction methodology for this rather unique shaft bottom structural system consisting of three sets of hitch beams, with each having specific functional requirements. INTRODUCTION Shaft bottom structural systems are used throughout the world in underground mining operations to provide a means to support the transfer of personnel, equipment, materials, ore and waste entering and exiting a vertical shaft ready for transport to and from the surface via the hoisting system. The shaft bottom structural system, for the Service Shaft (SS) at the Jansen Mine, is designed to accommodate two skips, a personnel/equipment cage, counterweight, services, loading pocket, rope changing, arrestor system, crash (or catch) beams, access platforms, stairs and rope divider system. Stantec and BHP have engineered a unique structural steel shaft bottom system for hoisting system at a Potash Mine. The shaft bottom structural system connects to a fixed guide and cantilever bunton system, used in the vertical shaft (shaft barrel), above the shaft bottom. The geometry for the shaft bottom structural system, shown in Figure 1 a), features three sets of hitch beams, beams which span across the shaft excavation or barrel. At the top of the structural system are two upper hitch beams. These hitch beams support a 64 metre suspended rectangular braced tower (upper tower), complete with steel guides for the conveyances. The upper tower passes through the main station (potash or mining) level and then connects to the top of the arrestor (lower) tower structure via a sliding vertical connection. The potash level is supported by two hitch beams spanning the shaft and loading pocket excavations. The arrestor tower, a braced compression tower structure, is carried by a third set of hitch beams. Below the third set of hitch beams is a short suspended tower complete with access platforms, stairs and the rope divider system."

Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are supported by piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads. Therefore, experimental investigations on model piles under lateral loads were conducted in uniform dry sand. Small-scale model tests were carried out considering the influence of pile length, pile diameter, sand density, roughness of pile surface and vertical load on the lateral resistance of a pile. Furthermore, the effect of pile load eccentricity (e/L) on the ultimate lateral resistance was studied. Investigations, of the influence of various parameters on the magnitude of the coefficient of subgrade reaction (nh), were also performed. It was found that the lateral load capacity of piles increases with increase in pile length, pile diameter, pile surface roughness and increase in the sand density. The results also showed that the coefficient of horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction, (nh), decreases with deflection increase. From the results, the coefficient of subgrade reaction for a smooth pile embedded in medium dense sand would decrease by (134%) when the lateral pile head deflection (yg) changes from (2% to 5%) of pile diameter.

"A brief history of previous mining activity on Coal Mountain, near Corbin, British Columbia, is followed by a description of the steps leading up to the resumption of mining in /974 by Byron Creek Collieries. New developments, including a preparation plant, a rail spur and a totally enclosed facility, as well as operating techniques, are also discussed. IntroductionThe Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Limited is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 110 air miles southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), 15 miles south of Highway 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). Development of the area began on July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J . Robert s, first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. , after acquiring 15,000 acres of land in the area , began to develop a mine.F.J. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 14-mile rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production.The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3), and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,337,800 tons. This production was allocated to the mines as shown in Table 1. No.3, 4 and 6 mines were operated intermittently from 1931 to 1935."

The energy situation the world faced during the decade of the Seventies resulted in actions throughout the free world to reduce its dependence on OPEC oil. Many nations heeded the indicators early in that decade and commenced efforts to reduce their oil requirements. Those nations which did not heed these warnings had the message brought to them more emphatically in the last portion of the decade with the further rapid and continuing rise in prices of OPEC oil. Furthermore, the demonstrated unstable nature of large oil-producing countries has made it clear to all free world nations that their energy demands of the future must be provided for by some more stable and assured supply. Now, early in the decade of the Eighties, we see the need for expanded use of coal as an energy supply to be essential. The result in 1980 and 1981 has been a great increase in demand for steam coal worldwide. In essence, a new business for the United States has developed in steam coal export. In the United States, the large growth in foreign demand for our steam coal is now well recognized and documented. A major impediment in meeting this growing demand became abundantly clear in 1980. This impediment is the congestion existing at U.S. coal export ports. With the recognition of this constraint, a plethora of activity has been observed in announcements for alleviating the problem by improving and expanding current export port facilities. In addition to improvement and expansion, an abundance of totally new facilities has been announced in an effort to find ways to meet this large demand in the new business of steam coal export. This is needed; and hopefully, many of these plans will be translated into action. While total implementation of all stated plans is not expected, much of the implementation depends upon large- scale dredging, large waterside ground storage sites, and improved handling equipments in the conventional type of export ports. The time and capital required for implementation is great, and environmental problems associated with dredging are substantial. Host significantly, and unfortunately, implementation that does include dredging our ports will still not permit use of the truly large colliers of 140,000 DWT and greater, which are evolving as the "state of the art" in long-distance sea transport.

This investigation of low-grade bauxites as potential sources of aluminum by caustic desilication and alumina extraction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop extractive methods for winning alumina from domestic deposits of low-grade bauxites. This report is the second of a series covering the work by the Bureau of Mines' Rolla, Mo., and Bauxite, Ark., laboratories. The first report published in the Journal of Metals, December 1951,3/ and dealt with kaolin and halloysite. The present investigation is concerned with low-grade bauxites only. The purpose of these investigations is to increase the domestic supply of aluminum ores. With eventual depletion of high-grade deposits, aluminous materials, such as low-grade bauxite, clays, shales, and high-iron laterites, will become our principal domestic sources of aluminum. The development of extractive processes for winning alumina from these low-grade materials is one of the many national security measures undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. A method has-been developed in the laboratory for successfully treating high-silica bauxites from domestic deposits. In this process the bauxite was calcined at 980° C. to form amorphous silica and alumina. The calcine was then leached by percolation with 15-percent sodium hydroxide solution at 940 to 96° C., removing 67 to 77 percent of the silica with a loss of 4.1 to 5.0 percent of the alumina. The sodium hydroxide in the spent liquor used in desilication was 95 percent recoverable, and comparable desilication results were obtained with 100-percent reclaimed liquor, The indicated cost of reagents, for sodium hydroxide and lime used in the desilication and regenera¬tion of spent liquor, was about $4.00 per ton of calcine treated.

The era of non-electric systems as an initiating system has revolutionised the blasting world by introducing a very safe initiating system that is reliable, with initiation sequence possibilities that are superior to those of purely pyrotechnical or electric systems. Electronic initiation has brought with it accuracy, programming and controls that were lacking in the non-electric systems. However, it has also led to a certain degree of complexity, which works against user-friendliness, sometimes introducing a few constraints that are balancing out the intrinsic performance of electronic detonators. The introduction of a hybrid initiation system, Electronic and Non Electric, offers accuracy, and flexibility that were lacking in non-electric systems, whilst removing the inherent complexity of electronic systems. This paper endeavours to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of non-electric and electronic initiation systems that have been recorded after years of experience on site. The paper will then describe how a hybrid system only keeps the advantages whilst eradicating the disadvantages, via a case study.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to correlate the information obtained during personal investigations at the sites of four rock tunnels in the process of construction and information obtained from the records and personal views of the constructors of two other tunnels that were not visited during the, excavation phase of construction and to present this information for the benefit of those who contemplate future construction of rock tunnels.Modern mechanized coal mining requires better, safer, properly alined haulageways and beltways; consequently, better understanding of tunneling methods by coal-mining men will be necessary. The possibility of future high-speed haulage systems utilizing rock tunnels in the more solid rock strata above or below the coal beds must not be discounted. In the past, tunnels have been driven for use in draining and unwatering inundated coal mines. At present, the need for such tunnels is very evident in some parts of the coal-mining regions, notably in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields, and studies along these lines are in progress. The average coal-mining man has little time or opportunity to visit tunnels while they are being exca-vated; therefore, it is hoped that this information will assist him in constructing tunnels safely if he is required to do so in the future.The tunnels described herein differ in size, shape, usage, and, in many instances, in their geological aspects. Full-face, heading and bench, and pilot-tunnel, and enlargement methods of excavation were utilized.The roof-support methods show diverse designs and materials of construction to suit each purpose and condition. The superiority of steel roof support over wood is demonstrated beyond doubt and is shown clearly in the photographs included in this circular.The illustrations (photographs taken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Corps of Engineers, and others) show many of the necessary steps taken during the excavation and the erection of roof support in tunnels under construction."

F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.

The seismic vulnerability of the existing outlet tower at Lake Mathews reservoir, located in Riverside County, California, necessitated the design of a new outlet facility to assure serviceability of the facility following a major earthquake. The components of the proposed facility include: a new outlet tower; a shaft; a new outlet tunnel; an approach channel that will be excavated underwater; and two short tunnels that will connect the new outlet tunnel to the existing outlet tunnel via the shaft. As the new facilities will be constructed while the reservoir is in operation, a cofferdam will be constructed around the site of the new outlet tower. The design for the underground facilities used a combination of empirical methods; limit equilibrium analyses, including displacement-based pseudo-static analyses for dynamic loading conditions; and numerical analyses. This paper outlines the design methodology used to develop an innovative design for the facilities which can be constructed within the time frame required by the operational schedule of the reservoir and existing outlet facility.

A thermal decomposition study of the kerogen in three Colorado oil shales was made at different temperatures by heating the shales in the absence of oxygen at atmospheric pressure and measuring the decomposition products (gas, oil, and bitumen) formed. From these data the specific reaction rates, "k", for the thermal decomposition of kerogen were determined for each temperature studied, making it possible to calculate the time required to accomplish a given amount of decomposition within the temperature range. The influence of temperature on reaction rates was presented by plotting the data according to the Arrhenius equation, thus providing a means of estimating the values of "k" for any temperature within the range of this study. It was found that the specific reaction rates for the thermal decomposition of the kerogen in the three sampler were comparatively equal at corresponding temperatures.

It is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current losses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that, indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use. Until the beginning of the present century, Swedish charcoal iron was regarded as the best grade of iron for magnetic purposes, and even now it ranks high among the various grades used. GENERAL Location of Property THE Stirling zinc-lead-copper deposit is in Richmond county, Cape Breton, about a quarter of a mile southwest from Stirling P.O., and some 45 miles southwest from Sydney. The property is accessible by road for at least nine months of the year, and during the navigation period coastal boats maintain a service touching at the port of Fourchu, eleven miles from the mine. When flying conditions permit, the Cape Breton Flying Club, of Sydney, will carry passengers to or from the property, a service which has been particularly advantageous on two occasions when hospitalization was urgently required. The Company has mining rights on leases Nos. 73-74, 78-80, and 101-104, inclusive, and owns 166 acres at Stirling and one acre at Fourchu. The ore deposit is in lease No. 73. History The Stirling deposit was discovered in the 'nineties', probably about 1895. The original discovery is said to have been made in the bed of Copper creek, which traverses the ore-zone. For a number of years, indifferent development work was carried on with a view to copper production only, and it was not until1915-16 that attention was directed to the possible production of zinc. Previously, the ore had been considered too complex for metallurgical treatment. During the period 1916-24 several operators attempted to develop the property, among them being the Stirling Exploration Company, Stirling Mining & Smelting Company, New Jersey Zinc Company of New York, Hayden & Stone Company of Boston, and The Eastern Mining & Milling Company. Up to 1924, the work was limited mainly to trenching, stripping, ? diamond drilling, and shot drilling.

INTRODUCTION Rapid transit systems involving near surface tunneling in hard rock are becoming more numerous, especially along the northeast corridor of the East Coast. Tunneled systems are under construction in Washington, D.C. and are being planned for Atlanta, Buffalo and Baltimore. Near surface tunneling is defined for this paper as being that in which the crown is 100 feet or less below ground surface. For Rosslyn Station, the total cover ranged from 52 to 70 feet. The rock cover, however, ranged from 40 to 50 feet which is slightly less than the station height and about two-thirds of its width. Rosslyn Station (Fig. 1) is the only station excavated completely in hard rock in the Virginia portion of the 98.5 mile Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system. The station site, oriented in a north-south direction beneath a main thoroughfare and flanked by multistory office buildings, was fixed by the need to serve a dense population center at a specific location and geologic conditions were a secondary consideration in siting. There was no previous underground rock excavation in the Washington Metropolitan Area of the size and scope of Rosslyn Station that offered a practical case history guide to the geologic conditions and excavation problems to be encountered. GEOLOGY The regional geology of the Washington Metropolitan Area is divided into two physiographic provinces by the northeast trending Fall Line (Fig. 2). The filling and solidification of an industrial scale composite casting has been simulated to investigate the re-melting of the outer shell material during casting. Production of a composite requires a two-step casting process which includes centrifugal casting of a hard outer shell material and subsequent conventional ingot casting of a tough core material into the shell-mold assembly. During casting of the core, a thin layer of the shell material re-melts and mixes with the core material producing a bonding layer of intermediate composition. The present numerical model employs the volume of fluid method and an enthalpy-porosity technique to couple the filling of the core material and re-melting of the shell material. The interface between the two materials is tracked and can be used as a guide to examine the extent of melting and, to some degree, mixing of the two fluids and species diffusion.

Shortly after becoming one of the van-guard of mine-developers in the State of Virginia, during the year 1883, I called the attention of the Institute to certain deposits of pyrites, which have been largely worked since. In all cases these deposits are covered with iron-ore (limonite), extending 40, 50 or 60 feet from surface to water-level. The several classes of brown iron-ores are found almost continuously along a prominent ridge of mineral-bearing slates, which can be traced from the James river northeasterly to the North Anna, the Rappahannock and the Potomac rivers, crossing the counties of Louisa, Spottsylvania and Stafford. Outcrops are plainly discoverable from end to end of this belt, also, in places, to the right and left of it, and at intervals there are evidences of workings, some of them for known purposes and others of unknown age and meaning. These old workings have an interest aside from the minerals they may contain or may have yielded. I have been engaged during the past five years in the collection of facts concerning them, which might determine definitely the site of those iron-furnaces, placed by tradition within reach of " the towne called Germanna," which were the first ever built in this State or on this continent. The events which led to the establishment of this important industry are sufficiently narrated in a paper written by Mr. R. A. Brock, Secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, and printed in the Proceedings of the National Museum, 1885, page 77, from which I quote the following : " To Virginia, the first of the English settlements in America, belongs the honor of inaugurating within her limits, as a colony, that most important industry, iron manufacture.
