"The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. "Utilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Almost ten years ago, an experimental research effort was carried out in the US to investigate the magnitude and mechanism of development of the bond strength between micropiles and existing concrete. The study resulted in important conclusions on the mechanism of connection capacity development and provided specific recommendations for practical design of micropile-to-footing connections. In the last five years, the original study was complemented by an intensive experimental effort in Portugal aimed at answering many of the questions still remaining on this topic. This paper is a summary of the knowledge that is presently available on the capacity of micropile-to-existing footing connections. It presents the results and observations of model tests performed in the US and Portugal, as well as some tests from actual construction sites. The paper presents clear evidence that friction may be the most important component of connection capacity. It also presents a clear correlation between confinement and connection capacity.IntroductionUtilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Smooth and textured micropile inserts of varying lengths were tested to failure inside pre-drilled holes of varying diameters. That investigation led to several publications (Gomez et al. 2005, Wilder et al. 2005, Cadden 2009) on the mechanism of development of bond strength between micropiles and concrete, which included a chart for preliminary bond value selection depending on the diameter of the hole and texture of the micropile.An intensive testing program was carried out in Portugal in the last five years. The program focused on answering questions posed by the original investigation and on finding the relationship between connection capacity and level of confinement. Both investigations, and especially the testing performed in Portugal, provided an invaluable amount of information on the mechanisms of failure of micropile-to-footing connections. This information should be the basis for development of design procedures that, until now, were not available."

AFTER nine years of extremely de- pressed business, marked mostly A with red ink on the balance sheets of most coal companies and with an increasing internal competitive struggle for diminishing markets, somewhat of a change appeared during 1939. Shipments increased and prices generally firmed, giving the coal industry increasing optimism and encouragement for the future. Specifically, it now appears that bituminous coal production for 1939 will approximate 378,000,000 tons, and anthracite production will approximate 47,500,000 tons, bituminous production being around 14 per cent ahead of 1938 and anthracite production 12 per cent better. The curve on p. 31, showing both bituminous and anthracite production, furnished by the bituminous coal division of the Department of the Interior, shows graphically most of the 1939 monthly production and clearly illustrates the increased production.

The development of a completely water - free expendable graphite mold material , useful for reactive metal castings , has been detailed . Mixing and curing variables have been evaluated both by physical testing of the material itself and by castings of titanium , zirconium , and hafnium . The blend of powdered graphite , cornstarch , dextrin , cereal binder , linseed oil , and Carbowax -4000 is a successful mix when mulled in a carbon dioxide atmosphere , and properly cured and fired . The primary advantage of this material is its adaptability to standard foundry techniques ; i . e . , core blowing and hand ramming . Temperatures in the curing and firing cycles do not exceed 960 ° C , and no vacuum firing is required .

Low-cost and environment-friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and starch, have been used in flotation of some sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Certain green modifiers may be used as dispersants, flocculants, depressants, or activators. The functions of green modifiers in froth flotation highly depend on their molecular composition, flotation slurry chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, etc. This paper will discuss the fundamentals, current applications, and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC, and corn starch in valuable minerals (phosphate, potash, and iron ores) and the unwanted gangue minerals (silica and clay minerals) flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns with the more plug-flow environments than in conventional flotation cells approaching perfectly mixed conditions. This is because the hydrodynamic cavitation-generated ultrafine bubbles could help bridge ultrafine particles to form aggregates, promote the formation of flocs, and increase the stability of flocs.

"A biodegradable flocculant was produced during growth of Bacillus megaterium. The major component of the bioflocculant was found to be a polysaccharide composed of some proteins. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the bioflocculant, and thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the transition and crystalline melting point at 90-105°C. The effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of mineral suspensions were evaluated. The bioflocculant exhibited good flocculating capability on mineral suspensions and achieved flocculating efficiencies of 90 percent for kaolinite and 85 percent for hematite suspensions at a dosage of only 5 mL/L. The maximum arsenite removal was found to be 90 percent at a bioflocculant dosage of 2 g/L, which is better than traditional chemical flocculants. This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants have potential for application in environmental cleanup, such as in the flocculation of mineral fines and in the remediation of solutions that contain toxic heavy metals.IntroductionBioflocculants are biopolymers produced by microorganisms during their growths. The predominant components of a bioflocculant are extracellular polymeric substances such as glycoprotein, protein, cellulose and nucleic acid (Salehizadeh and Shojaosadati, 2001). Bioflocculants have gained much wider attention due to their biodegradability and safety. In recent years, the study of bioflocculants has attracted wide attention. Bioflocculants can be nontoxic, harmless and eco-friendly. Normally, they exhibit different functional properties, serving as stabilizer, dispersant or thickener. Among these properties, flocculation is of major interest. For example, Phormidium sp. strain J-1, isolated from a drainage channel, exhibited excellent flocculation activity for bentonite particles in liquid suspension (Fattom and Shilo, 1984). A protein bioflocculant produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis could efficiently flocculate suspended solids while losing their flocculating activity by enzymatic digestion (Kurane et al., 1994, Takeda et al., 1991). Klebsiella sp. strain S11 screened from activated sludge was unable to flocculate without the addition of calcium chloride (Dermlim et al., 1999)."

This is a true story. Names have been changed to illustrate the importance and impact of carbon monoxide risk management in explosive blast projects and the community « Honey I’m not feeling good…” “What is going on Michael?” – – Michael was not answering so Julia, who was on the third level of the magnificent house, hurried down the stairs to check up on him in the basement. Today was day 2 of the construction work of the bathroom, yesterday they had excavated all the space for the shower. She started to breathe heavily as she was approaching the bathroom and saw Michael unconscious on the floor. “Michael!” – Julia immediately dialed 911. She opened a window since the air was heavy and went by Michael to hear him breathe and take his pulse. The paramedics took Michael on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital. “I’m feeling dizzy” she thought to herself a couple of hours after the incident, and heard Matthew say: “Mom, I’m feeling sick”. Suddenly, she felt like she would pass out and felt in danger but couldn’t move. She desperately searched for her cellphone and dialed 911 but couldn’t speak. The dispatcher sent the firefighters and paramedics to the GPS location that was appearing on the screen and the emergency team was alerted that it was a second call in hours at the same address. When the firefighters arrived, they had to force the door to enter and found Julia in her bedroom on the third floor and Anette and Matthew also unconscious in their bedroom, lying on their respective bed. There was no smoke but on their multigas meter, carbon monoxide (CO) peaked at 1500 ppm on every level of the house, which is abnormally high.

The processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range were studied to obtain an understanding of the basis of Coffin's law. Particular attention was paid to the manner of mack nucleation and to the determination of the portion of the total lifetime spent in crack propagation. It was observed that cracks are nucleated at surface notches meated during reversed plastic deformation, Principally at grain boundaries, and that crack growth occupies greater than 75 pct of the fatigue life. When inclusions are present, they are often the primary sites of crack initiation. From consideration of the incremental distances advanced by a crack in each cycle and of the lifetimes of different materials, it appears that the universality of Coffin's law arises from the similarity of crack-tip strain for a given applied strain amplitude, irrespecti7:e of material. STUDIES of low-cycle fatigue have been particularly rewarding in that a simple correlation between fatigue lifetime and plastic-strain range has been shown to exist. This empirical relationship takes the forml,2 Nner=C [1] where N is the number of cycles to failure, Er is the plastic-strain range defined as the total plastic strain per cycle (the sum of the tensile plastic strain plus the compressive plastic strain), n, the exponent, is a constant independent of the material to a first-order approximation and often has a value of about 0.5, and C is a constant which for a number of ductile and metallurgically stable materials is approximately 0.65 for fully reversed strain.3 This relationship has been shown to be valid for a wide variety of metals and alloys and is often referred to as Coffin's law. However, it is yet not clear why so many different metals and alloys exhibit the same over-all behavior in the low-cycle range. Less is known about the mechanisms of fatigue failure in the low-cycle range than in the high-cycle range, but it is expected that the processes would have much in common. For example, an important characteristic common to both high-and low-cycle ranges is that fatigue crack propagation can occupy a considerable portion of the total lifetime. This has been shown by Laird and smith4 by a count of the number of ripples present on the fracture surface of copper specimens, each ripple corresponding to one cycle of load. On the other hand, some marked differences have been noted. For example, in copper,5 nickel, and aluminum4 there is a greater tendency for grain boundary cracking to occur as the strain amplitude is increased. The purpose of the present work was to study further the processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range and to obtain an understanding of the basis for the validity of Coffin's law. Particular attention has been paid to the manner of crack initiation and to the determination of the portion of total lifetime spent in crack propagation. MATERIALS A number of metals and alloys were tested, although more attention was focused on a particular few, once general trends had become apparent. Alloys were selected so as to investigate the effects of crystal structure, number of phases, stacking-fault energy, and impurity content. This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. The mine has, been idle since 1946

Trigger action response plans (TARPs) are inherent to managing multiple hazards such as high gas content with multiple coal seams, high spontaneous combustion propensity, heat and ventilation. TARPs aim to provide assurance and guidance when the situation deviates from the original plan or there is a change in conditions that could be hazardous. Over the years, learnings from various incidents have continuously required coal operations to revisit the TARP trigger values that were based on historical data or guidance values from the industry. In most cases, the background to the basis of TARP statistical data (ie average, maximum, hourly or daily for the monitoring or sampling location) is unknown. The introduction of real-time monitoring devices to monitor gases and airflows has provided greater understanding of the hazard scenarios and their controls. This paper analyses the carbon monoxide data from operating longwall mines and compares these with the historical trigger values to understand the changes and identify improvement opportunities while setting trigger levels in the TARPs. As an example of setting trigger values, those used during the sealing of a panel are explored in terms of setting values based upon the sampling location and the level of risk. It is envisaged that the learnings shared herein will further enhance the understanding and management of multiple hazards in Australian coalmines.CITATION:Belle, B and Cliff, D, 2015. Over the last 25 years, through adversity and a growing level of risk mitigation, Australian Longwall mines have been using higher and higher capacity cable bolts for secondary support. A recent survey revealed 85% of Australian longwall cable bolts are a 70 tonne capacity pre-tensioned hollow post groutable system. Mines avoiding pumping cementitious grouts are sometimes using pre-tensioned resin encapsulated solid cable bolts of over 90 tonne capacity. Results from various industry and University research has led to manufacturer's fine tuning the construction of their cable bolts. A review of this research explains how smooth wire construction is now dominant. Aggressive shear has also led to some mines using 8 tonnes pre-tension instead of the previous common 20 tonnes pre-tension. Lower pre-tension acceptance is now leading to a greater use of threaded cable bolt end fittings, these are tensioned to 8 tonne using the drill motor torque. A recent development is the TEX cable bolt, a slim line threaded end fitting that fits with the drill hole like a standard rock bolt. This cable is being installed at the coal face as primary support off bolter-miners. The laboratory and in-situ testing of the TEX cable is presented. In a bid to improve gateroad development rates and ground support in the last several years, a 100 tonne tensile capacity Goliath cable system was developed. The latest development in resin anchored solid cables is a 110 tonne capacity cable bolt, with laboratory and in-situ testing results presented.

Any Australian who knows of the poverty of the early settlers in the first few years following the arrival of Captain Arthur Phillip with his "first fleet" at Botany Bay must feel proud of the progress that has been made in the 174 years that have elapsed since that momentous occasionGFor all its attractive appearance as reported by Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks, the shores of Botany Bay and of Port Jackson proved most ,inhospitable, and the accessible country surrounding them anything but suitable for sustaining the life of the small settlement. It is well known that during the first 15 or 20 years the hardy colonists and un-tfortunate convicts were close to starvation on several occasions and were only saved by the arrival of supply ships, which were dependent on the vagaries of wind and current, and the hazards of the uncharted seas they had to -navigate-.When Australia was little more than a miserable penal settlement, Great Britain was one of the great-powers of the world, and the U,.S.A. was an independent nation with a growing degree of prosperity that even then gave promise of its mighty awakening to become, as it has, a e.olossus of industry and commerce,-and the. leader in living standards of the world to-day.Australia, from such a shaky, and comparatively recent start, has risen to a position in which its living standards rank very high in comparison with those of most of the nations of Europe and America. Exact com-parisons are hard to fix because of the wide variety of factors involved .but the Institute of Pab?Lic Affairs .(Victoria) places Australia fifthin the world, excelled only by the U.S.A., Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. The next best after Australia are the United Kingdom, West Germany and France.How we achieved such a high standard of living is a vast subject for study but some of the economic aspects of our climb from abject poverty to a position of near affluence can readily be identified.

"The Line 5 Extension, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transportation by Sao Paulo’s state government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major Metro lines and stations; all currently in operation. The total extension of the line is 11 km (6.8 mi), and includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station, one of the new stations due to be open and operating in 2016, has a unique geometry of five secant shafts.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One slurry wall, along the Santo Amaro Avenue, was to contain the contamination plumes, and another was for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall that reduced the construction time of the shafts by half, allowing the contractor to meet the construction schedule. This solution also avoided dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a hydromill was used in such a situation in Brazil. The hydromill, by overcutting the panels, increased the quality of the joints, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The hydromill also created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of the contaminated plumes.The GeologyLocal geology is composed of a superficial Quaternary soil, basically soft organic clays and sands and gravels. From the depth of 8 m (26 ft) until 18 m (59 ft), geology is composed by tertiary medium compact sand with thin silt-clay layers. From 18 m (59 ft) down, there are alternations between compact silt-sands layers with very hard clays layers. Each is approximately 5 to 10 m (16.4 ft to 33 ft) thick.The Initial Basic DesignThe original basic design of the Brooklin Station was to be constructed from five 40 m (131 ft) diameter intersecting circular shafts, all in a line along the axis of the Metro tunnel, in 555 days. In the excavation sequence, the odd shafts were first excavated, waterproofed and had part of their inside cast-in-place structure built before the even shafts were excavated. During the excavation of the even shafts, part of the odd shaft’s support was demolished and connected with the even support. A 0.8 m (2.6 ft) thick plastic slurry wall, acting together with the wire mesh reinforced shotcrete support, ensured the excavation stability around the five shafts."

FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

As part of a program for improving, the safety of permissible explosives, the Federal Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to establish the ability of sodium chloride to reduce the incendivity of permissible explosives to firedamp atmospheres. A motivating influence for this investigation has been the comparatively extensive experience of British and other European investigators, who used sodium chloride as a component of their permitted explosives (1, 5, 6 7).5/ In the United States research and development work of this type has been less extensive, although sodium chloride has been added to permissible explosives as a cooling agent (9) for many years. The results of the first phase of this investigation were presented in a previous paper (8), which established that adding up to 10 percent sodium chloride to permissible explosives reduces the likelihood of ignition of firedamp in the gallery test; however, the results were somewhat inconsistent, and the conclusions were qualified. Accordingly, the investigation was continued with a study of the effect of added sodium chloride as a function of the quantity added and of the particle size of the salt.
