The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.

This paper describes the implementation aspect of a blast hole kriging system which has been developed for the purpose of daily ore-waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore-waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBM/PC AT or XT computer, using Fortran language and supplemented by a few Assembly language routines for bit-map manipulation. The emphasis of this paper is on the implementation aspect of the developed system. For this reason, the requirements for practical implementation and the system design considerations are discussed in the paper, as well as the main features of the University of Arizona's BHK System.

A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in recent years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

DREAMS do come true at times, although it is evidently better to believe in engineers than to "believe in fairies" if most dreams are to be translated into fact. It was a fine dream that David H. Moffat had when he projected a railway directly west from Denver; a dream of opening a new empire in northwestern Colorado, and of quickening transportation from the Middle West to the Pacific slope. But Moffat had been a miner and had become a banker. He knew that dreams, untranslated into works, benefit no one and pleasure only the dreamer, so he employed an engineer, H. A. Sumner, to study and plan the route to be followed by the rails. Previous main lines had run to the north, the Union Pacific, or the south, the Santa Fe. The Denver and Rio Grande, it is true, wriggled its way bravely across Colorado but, in order to reach a point 74 miles in an airline west of- Denver, travelled 281 miles following two canyons and crossing Tennessee Pass at 10,240 ft. Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

"Along the process of defining the fundamentals of a ferronickel project, several questions require proper answers from the very beginning such as the size and characteristics of the laterite deposit (oxide or silicate), the mineralogical variability, and the selection of the most valuable process route. In general, these elements will be defined along the progress of the exploration and feasibility studies, and definitive engineering. Also, from the very preliminary estimates, three questions are very common: what should be the plant capacity (annual tonnes of contained nickel), what will be the probable capital required (CAPEX), and what will be the estimated timeline (schedule) between the initial stage, say the feasibility study and the plant start-up and ramp-up to designed capacity. The accuracy of the capital cost estimates also progresses along the different stages of development from ±50% at the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) stage down to ±5% for the Detailed Engineering and Construction stage. These accuracies of estimates have been, in some ways, accepted by the mining community and investors. The industry accepted benchmark for ferronickel projects in terms of CAPEX are then in the order of US$50,000 per tonne of nickel contained in the FeNi product. In this paper, the authors analyze in some details three ferronickel projects for lateritic ores that have selected the Rotary Kiln - Electric Furnace (RKEF) as the suitable technological route and have started production in the period 2006–2016. Some key aspects of the ferronickel projects are examined: 1) size and type of deposit; 2) flowsheet selection; 3) evolution of capital cost as a function of capacity from the feasibility stage to construction; 4) comparison between planned production scale and actual ramp up; 5) estimated capital expenditure (CAPEX) compared with actual figures; 6) nickel price evolution and timing of the approval for the project to proceed to construction and production start-up. The objective of this paper is to identify key elements that should be addressed in future projects and that are proposed as benchmark figures for similar projects."

The mining industry is known to be a potential major contributor to the industrial development of any economy. Large-scale mining has been going on in Zambia for the last 100 years. The impact of mining in Zambia has been to create a development corridor along the line of rail to the Copperbelt Province, where hitherto, mining was concentrated, and then to develop a large consolidated high-density economic zone covering an area of about 72 km by 60km. This area is home to a number of very large integrated copper/cobalt mining complexes. The mining zone has expanded to the Northwestern Province in the last 10 years, where the largest copper mine in Africa now exists, having produced about 300 000 tonnes of copper in 2011. The total output of the Zambian mining industry is now about 820 000 tonnes per annum with projections of reaching 1.5 million by 2015, due to new Greenfield investments expected to come online by then. These new mining industry developments have come on the back of strong and sustained high base metal prices, in the last 10 years or so, due to demand mainly from China and India. This new lease of life has increased the contribution of the sector to the national treasury. The mining industry in Zambia has undergone a very important ownership restructuring with the sale of the previously Government owned parastatal, Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) which dominated the sector, to allow for private sector participation. The privatization process lasted from about 1995 to about 2002. The recent growth of the mining sector has unfortunately not been matched by an adequate supply of skilled manpower for various reasons. These include: (i) A lack of strong in-house training strategies by the new mine owners (ii) Decrease in industry support to the training institutions (iii) The demise of and restructuring of ZCCM which has consequently limited the Government human resources planning tools for the mining sector (iv) The cyclic nature for the fortunes of the sector has lead to fluctuating interest of student recruitment into training institutions (v) Limitations, both staff and equipment, in the training institutions (vi) A re-structuring of the training institutions This paper examines the current status, and student output from tertiary training institutions for the mining sector in Zambia. This is then compared to the skilled labour demands of the sector. The various cause and effect issues are considered and a proposal on how this skills gap could be addressed sustainably is proposed. Demolition projects involving explosives may incorporate cutting charges to sever columns in collaboration with kicker charges that “move” the columns out of alignment. Traditional kicker charges often involve the use of dynamite secured to the column above the cutting charge. Nitroglycerine, the main component of dynamite, causes medical problems and can be a hazard to workers on site. Dynamite can also cause fragmentation of the column and structures, resulting in potential injuries to people or leading to the possibility of cutoffs in neighboring charges. This study investigates the use of water-cased kicker charges to reduce the amount of dynamite in demolition. Water charges, traditional charges, and detonating cord charges were placed on hanging steel columns and analyzed for the fragmentation of the column and velocity of the column. A W 10 X 22 beam was hung in an underground limestone test area and allowed to swing freely acting as a severed column. Charges were attached to the bottom of the column with tape and initiated using electric detonators. Explosive charges of dynamite or detonating cord were placed in the center of a water container or directly on the column for use as the kicker charge. Tests were recorded with high-speed video and velocity was calculated using Phantom Camera Control software. Velocity and time were then used to calculate force, kinetic energy, impulse, and pressure exerted by the explosive on the column. The water charge transferred energy to the column over a larger area with no direct contact of explosive and the column. Water charges moved the column faster and with more power than traditional charges. After preliminary tests, water charges were also used as the primary kicker charges in a full-scale demolition project as a case study using 118 charges. The kicker charges successfully moved building members without creating fragmentation while using less dynamite than traditional kicker charges. Due to the success, multiple full-scale projects are being designed using water charges to show success and repeatability.

Spontaneous combustion caused by the movement of air through the waste is a major problem. Combat methods attempt to exclude oxygen rich air, but little is known about airflow through the waste. The use of a tracer gas technique to monitor the flow of nitrogen from an injection hole during inertisation is described. Correlations are drawn between barometric pressure changes and the nitrogen entering the waste. As no information was obtained about airflow and oxidation zones, a second experiment was conducted to sample from the waste, but the results were inconclusive. A finite element method developed to model the pressure and airflow distribution, under steady state and nitrogen injection conditions is outlined

Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.

When I was first asked to give a paper on work-life balance in the mining industry I was both excited and aware of the incongruity of my position. I have never worked in mining operations nor have I had any experience that approximates the on-site lifestyle. IÆm not really an adventurer or a traveller, I prefer writing and research to hands-on activities and IÆve never worked further than twenty minutes away from home. The perspective I offer is thus largely an objective one. I say largely since I grew up in a family where my parents work arrangements involved long-distance commuting; my dad continues to work FIFO at a coalmine in Blackwater until this day. Perhaps my tortoise-like existence is a rebellion against his flighty movements. The analysis I will be presenting today draws together a variety of sources, from member anecdotes and research on FIFO and work-life balance to the popular philosophy writings of a bald Englishman with a French name. I am speaking of the famous writer, Alain de Botton, whose television show æThe Consolations of PhilosophyÆ you may have seen on the ABC. Work-life balance is a term that gets a lot of mileage in corporate brochures and at breakfast seminars. But like many terms that get bandied around in the human resources circuit, from æteam synergyÆ to æperformance optimisationÆ, I am frequently perplexed as to what it actually means. Corporate websites are at pains to emphasise the high priority that they place on the needs of the whole person. Yet in terms of substantive content, a commitment to work-life balance often seems to translate into little more than the option to take a few morning yoga classes in exchange for working a seventy-hour week. As extended work hours have taken their toll, leading to high attrition of professionals across all industries, employers are increasingly expending resources to discover just what lies behind this buzz word. The challenge for companies is to find meaningful strategies to help employees better integrate different aspects of their lives in a new era of work, as employees are sending the message that they are not willing to play work, social life and leisure off against each other in a zero sum game.

I reached New York at the start of my second South American adventure on Jan. 9, 1916. In the Anaconda office I found that we were not to take the steamer for two weeks which gave me time to study reports on Potrerillos and Corocoro. Reno Sales, whom I had met in Butte only casually, was to go with us to South America. Though he was only a little older than I, he was already an unquestioned leader of our profession, and we became and remained good friends. William Braden was in New York and would return to Santiago with us. Tom Hamilton would also be returning from a vacation. Leighton Stewart, a young engineer who was to work for Braden, was going on the steamer with us, taking along his wife. And of course Dr. Ricketts would go along. He had just become engaged to John Greenway's half sister, Kate Greenway, and in order not to be away from her longer than was necessary, he did not reach New York until a day before we sailed. This made eight of us who would be in the party. We were to go to Corocoro first, as Braden had taken an option on the Chilean company there. Development was already under way. As reports came in by mail we tried to get as good an idea of the property as we could before the actual examination. Mr. Thayer "put us up" at India House, one of the best lunch clubs in New York, and Reno and I ate our lunches there almost every day. Thayer, Braden, and Cornelius Kelley, who was to succeed Mr. Ryan as president of Anaconda, joined us when they could. At the lunches they told us about the under- ground war in Butte a few years earlier. When I wrote my chapter on the Butte wars in Romantic Copper more than 15 years later I could not help being biased a bit by my friends, all of whom were on the Anaconda side. But their opponents in the Clark and Heinze camp were just as biased in their comments on my book.

Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease this to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the kraft-paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and the anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2 504 • 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of the total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs, in many instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery of production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.

Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(C03l2Fj. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in flUorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.
