"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead smelter at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The zinc circuit comprises three parallel operations: conventional fluid-bed roasting, direct zinc pressure leaching of concentrates and atmospheric leaching of zinc oxide fume recycled from the lead smelter. The products from these three areas are combined in the main leaching plant where they undergo iron purification. Unlike most leaching circuits, the leach process in Trail begins with an acid leach and is followed by a neutral leach. An evaluation was undertaken to determine if the process at Trail could be improved by converting to the conventional neutral leaching process with a subsequent acid leach of the residues. This paper explores the results of these tests and the implications for Trail Operations.

THE following paper-in no sense a technical paper-is a summary of a safety campaign instituted by a coal-mining company to improve an unfortunate safety record. The experience should be suggestive equally to coal and metal-mining companies. With few precedents to follow in the beginning, the course was charted by trial and error. The endeavor, often disheartening, finally resulted in the capture of the most coveted safety trophy in the mining industry, "The Sentinels of Safety," awarded by the Hercules Powder Co. of Wilmington, Del., through the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The period described covers the 10-year interval, 1924 to 1933, the year 1933 being that for which the award was made. In this paper the relative merits of shot peening, induction surface hardening, spiral-rolling, and the combination of these surface treatments, are evaluated on the basis of their capacity to increase the fatigue strength of drill steel. The S-N relations for plain car-bon steel (SAE 1080) and Ni-Cr-Mo drill steels in the as-rolled condition were determined previously, using the new Canadian method of testing drill steel introduced at the annual meeting of the Institute in Toronto in 1950 (19). S-N curves have now been determined by this method for these two drill steels in the following conditions: shot-peened and drawn, induction hardened, induction hardened and shot-peened, and spiral-rolled. ( S.R.) . The ratios of the fatigue strengths of these steels after surface treatment, to their fatigue strengths in the as-rolled condition, are compared and the most beneficial treatments are thereby pointed out. The expected range of stresses and their distribution during actual drilling operations are estimated from data available, and the mechanism of failure of drill steel in the as-rolled and surface-treated conditions is analyzed. The magnitude of the surface compression stresses and their effect on ?fatigue strength are discussed.

From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

The flotation work on samples from nine fluorspar properties in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky., reported herewith was part of a wartime project that resulted in increasing the supply of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The samples were tailings, dumps, and waste rock that had been rejected in previous milling operations. All were treated successfully by flotation to yield metallurgical-grade concentrates with recoveries ranging from 77.5 to 98.3 percent of the fluorite. After the laboratory testing, the results of which were available to the owners and operators of the properties, many of the tailing ponds and rock dumps were milled. The real value of this report, therefore, is to show the operators of gravity concentration plants the possibilities of re-treating waste products by flotation either at some future time or currently with the gravity

In this book1 I will in like manner explain the principles of underground mining and the art of surveying. First then, I will proceed to deal with those matters which pertain to the former heading, since both the subject and methodical arrangement require it. And so I will describe first of all the digging of shafts, tunnels, and drifts on venae profundae; next I will discuss the good indications shown by canales2, by the materials which are dug out, and by the rocks ; then I will speak of the tools by which veins and rocks are broken down and excavated ; the method by which fire shatters the hard veins ; and further, of the machines with which water is drawn from the shafts and air is forced into deep shafts and long tunnels, for digging is impeded by the inrush of the former or the failure of the latter ; next I will deal with the two kinds of shafts, and with the making of them and of tunnels ; and finally, I will describe the method of mining venae dilatatae, venae cumulatae, and stringers.

The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

The primary objective of this study was to establish the fate and distribution of material rejected during marine aggregate dredging, and the extent to which this is associated with spatial changes in biological community composition. Two actively dredged sites in the southern North Sea (Licence Areas 430 and 106) were selected in order to provide a comparison of impacts between sites subjected to different levels of dredging intensity and of contrasting environmental conditions. Dispersal of material rejected during the dredging process was monitored by means of acoustic doppler current profiling techniques (ADCP). Composition of the substratum and benthic invertebrate assemblages were investigated by the analysis of seabed grab samples. It was found that dredging in both areas had an impact on seabed bathymetry in the form of dredge furrows and also led to a reduction of the coarse gravel-sized components of the worked area. Sand sized particles were shown to increase in the surface deposits of both dredged areas. This is likely to reflect both the removal of coarse particles as cargo and the settlement of finer particles rejected during overboard screening. Dispersion and settlement profiles of material rejected by dredging vessels suggested that the majority of the suspended sediment load resulting from overboard screening settles to the seabed within 500 m. Some evidence of suspended sediment loads above background levels were noted at distances of up to 2 km from the working vessel. Analysis of the particle size composition of the deposits, along the axis of transport of material from the dredged sites, suggested that the impact on the sediment composition outside the boundaries of the dredged sites is dependent on the strength and direction of net sediment flux at the seabed. Benthic invertebrate communities within the dredged zones of both areas were found to differ significantly from communities in nearby undredged deposits. A major suppression of species richness and abundance was noted in the dredged sectors of both sites when compared to control locations. A ?footprint? of potential impact on the benthic fauna was noted in samples taken along the axis of sediment transport at distances of up to 1750m outside the boundaries of Area 430. In contrast, impacts on benthic community structure at Area 106 appeared to be confined to the immediate vicinity of the dredged zone itself. This apparent difference in impacts, beyond the boundaries of the dredged sectors between the two study sites, was thought to be a reflection of the smaller quantities of material rejected at Area 106 and the weak seabed sediment flux which is characteristic of this area. These findings, along with those of numerous dredging impacts studies, were then used to make generalised predictions of macrobenthic community recovery following marine aggregate extraction in a variety of seabed habitats.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). Federal Regulations require that coal producers conduct a written, in-house investigation with every lost time injury accident. Besides their obvious value in accident prevention, competently conducted investigations can provide a number of additional benefits to include positive supervisor involvement, the control of rising worker's compensation costs and a measure of protection from civil/criminal proceedings. The paper describes such topics as MSHA minimum requirements, investigator selection and training, accident site procedures, witness interview techniques and the management review process. The reader is also presented with a number of information resources available through MSHA, the National Safety Council and other sources.

The purpose of this paper is to describe several methods that have been employed in successfully recovering roof bolts in Indiana, Illinois, and western Kentucky coal mines, the States where successful roof-bolt recovery was started. As far as is known, the first bolts were recovered in a mine in western Kentucky in January or February 1951. In April 1951 a meeting was held at that mine to discuss the recovery of roof bolts. The meeting was attended by A. D. Sisk, former Chief, Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals; and L. W. Kelly, Federal Bureau of Mines; and officials of the coal company. Inasmuch as roof bolting was in its infancy, the thinking regarding roof bolts at that time was on the problem of getting them in, not getting them out; consequently, the thought of recovering them was revolutionary. The subject was discussed at length from all angles, and it was finally agreed that, if certain safeguards were taken, no agency represented at the meeting would oppose the practice. That this decision was sound has been proved, as thou-sands of bolts have been recovered in the Middle West without a lost-time accident. Recovering roof bolts is a simple operation; consequently, no complicated equipment had to be designed or built for this purpose. However, about 5 years ago, officials of the Traux-Traer Coal Co. conceived the idea and constructed a mechanical device for recovering bolts that has been very successful and has been copied widely in this area. This device will be discussed in detail in part II of this paper.

The Big mine has been a source of mica and high-grade felspar from separate zones in the same pegmatite dike since 1914. In 1943 it became the outstanding producer of strategic mica in New England. The urgent need for sheet mica led to core-drilling by the Bureau of Mines from February to May 1914. Nine diamond-drill hob's aggregating 1,474 feet in length were drilled by the Bureau of Mines with the objective of developing extensions of the known mica shoots. The use of large-diameter bits made it feasible to obtain reasonably reliable results in diamond-drilling this type of deposit.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was made to determine the possibilities of using Florida beach-sand concentrator wastes in ceramic products. Sands used in the investigation originated in the Trail Ridge area of Florida, where continued operation of processing plants for recovering titanium minerals promises a dependable source of raw materials. Three general classes of ceramic products were studied, namely: (1) Structural, (2) refractory, and (3) electric-furnace slags.

The results of scale-up studies on a continuous, multistage horizontal mixer-settler extractor are presented. The chemical and mechanical system involves the separation of lanthanum from a mixture of rare earth chlorides using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid as the solvent and dilute HCl as a scrub solution in a bench scale extractor. Each stage has a hold-up of 2.6 l. A single stage unit is utilized for scale- up studies. Results are obtained on four sizes of geometrically similar units, the largest being six times the volume of the original bench size. A unit operations technique is chosen so that mixing and settling can be examined independently. Variables examined include type of continuous phase, flow rate of inlet streams, and power input to the mixer. Inlet flow-rate ratios are kept constant for all tests. TWO potential methods of unbaffled pump-mixer scale-up are explored; the maintenance of constant impeller tip speed and constant power input. For the settler, the previously successful method of basing design on constant flow-rate per unit cross- sectional area is used.
