The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

"INTRODUCTION Wood burned for commercial heat and power usually is waste material from some manufacturing process. The amount of it reaches substantial proportions. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the timber cut for lumber becomes ""waste"" in the process - sawdust, shavings, trimmings, slabs, and bark. Woodworking manufacturing processes also produce much waste. The incentive to use this waste has resulted in much development of wood-burning equipment to produce heat and power. To answer general inquiries received by the Bureau, this publication covering developments along these lines was written. Moisture is essentially always associated with wood. Green wood contains approximately 30 to 50 percent moisture; air-dried or seasoned wood contains 15 to 25 percent and kiln-dried about 8 percent. Exposed to the weather, wood absorbs and gives off moisture depending on weather conditions and water contact.""Dry"" wood ignites relatively quickly and readily gives off volatile matter when heated. Long flames and smoke easily occur during burning. The burning action is substantially retarded, however, by appreciable moisture content; ignition is more difficult. When the moisture content is more than about 70 percent, an auxiliary fuel is required to maintain combustion. One of the main factors in the problem of the satisfactory and smokeless combustion of wood is its moisture content."

Porous silica was obtained by acid leaching of chrysotile. The porous silica had been characterized by chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectros-copy (FT-IR), and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. It is shown in this study that the porous silica retains the nanofibrous morphology of the original chrysotile, and produces a high specific surface area (SBET) of 391. 8 m2/g and total pore volume of 1. 05 mL/g. The increase in SBET and the total pore volume of the porous silica reflect the formation of micropores of 1.2~1.5nm and meso-pores of 3.2~3.8nm in diameter inside the porous structure. The hysteresis loop of N2 adsorption-desorption curve indicates mainly slit-shaped pores. The porous silica is amorphous, but its structure is regular to some extent. The structural unit of silica from chrysotile is a SiO4 tetrahedron and six-member silicon-oxygen rings with the tetrahedral positioned alternately up and down in the six-member rings.

With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. Roll crushers had been used in the past ahead of existing milling systems in order to obtain additional production from such mills in both the mining and the cement industries. Historically, a roll crusher as a preliminator to a ball mill has been used for a number of industrial mineral applications. Flowsheets, from Taggars(1) show systems for fluorspar, graphite, lead and zinc to name a few, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4. These units applied, (in some cases still in service), prior to 1950 and as early as the 1920's, were of two general types, rigid rolls and spring rolls. The rigid rolls were phased out in favor of the spring rolls. The spring force related to the linear inch width of the rolls, ranged from 500 to 50,000 lbs/linear inch(1) on units up to 90" diameter. With choke feeding, the rolls were spread against the spring force during crushing keeping the system under high pressure to obtain high effectiveness.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other countries, the Tri-Flo has demonstrated to represent a substantial improvement of the dense medium dynamic separation systems. The reasons are: (1) high sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in designing the regeneration circuit and controlling the medium rheology; (2) the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a since separation device and a single regeneration circuit. The paper discusses in detail the above mentioned points, with particular reference to the multistage technology, based on the circuit analysis theory, and to the control of the medium rheology based on recent work in the modelling, and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions.

CRUDE oil production in the United States during 1938 reached approximately 1,214,355,000 barrels, an average of 3,327,000 barrels per day, or 5 per cent below the 1937 record output of 1,279,160,000 barrels. The decreased production did not prevent the stocks of all products from increasing to a total of 575,954,000 barrels by Sept. 30, an increase of 10,957,000 above the total on Jan. 1, or an average daily storage increase in all products of 40,135 barrels. The increase in total stocks was made entirely in the refined products, stocks of crude oil during the first nine months of 1938 having actually declined 7,155,000 barrels to 299,671,000 barrels, or an average daily decline of 26,209 barrels. The furnace used for experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. One fireclay sagger, or pot, was set within another and the space between the two filled with Silox heat insulation. The hearth is a cast-iron plate with an imbedded ribbon of nichrome wire; this wire heater is connected to a potential regulator, which permits a very close voltage control. A mechanically driven arm is fitted with rabble blades so arranged that a uniformly thick ore bed may be maintained indefinitely. This arm is usually driven at about one revolution per minute but its speed of rotation can be varied as desired. Compressed air is led into the furnace through a meter, and it was found necessary to preheat the air in order to secure the definitely isothermal conditions sought. The Melrose zinc-lead. deposit is in an area of structural disturbance of sedimentary rocks in the Melrose mining district in Cherokee County, Kans., 25 miles west of Joplin, Mo., adjacent to the northwest limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling in the Melrose district has been sporadic and. very limited, largely due to the high cost of exploration through great thicknesses of barren rock, 350 to 440 feet overlying the ore deposits. No mining has ever been done on the Melrose zinc-lead tract, but it has been drilled extensively. The drill-hole logy indicate extensive structural deformation, silicification, and zinc-lead deposits in the Boone limestone-chert formations of the Mississippian series, which is overlain by thick-bedded Pennsylvanian shale and sandstone. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate the ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with no evident oxidation. During the period from November 2, 1949, to March 13, 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 23 holes aggregating 10,405 feet of bore. Factual data on the investigation and logs of holes drilled by private parties and the Bureau of Mines are presented in this report.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Red Hook Houses was subjected to damage during Superstorm Sandy. As a result, the NYCHA has an ongoing project known as Restoration Associated with Sandy Recovery Program to improve the resistance against future storms. The specific project included 28 residential buildings and several service buildings within the Red Hook Development. The subsurface conditions within the eastern portion of the site included existing fill material underlain by varying stratums of very loose, loose and medium dense silty sands followed by very soft to medium stiff clay or dense silty sands. The western portion of the site included existing fill material, very loose to medium dense silty sands and organic clayey silts underlain by very soft to medium stiff sandy silts. Based on the geotechnical report, a conventional driven steel pile system was specified containing two pile depths. As part of the project bidding, an alternative pile type was recommended and analyzed to provide quicker installation, reduce vibrations, reduce noise, and provide relatively large cost savings. Due to relatively high lateral loading, an innovative double steel casing drilled displacement piles was proposed as the alternative pile option. Field testing proved the piles capable of the required project capacities and the use of drilled displacement piles as the best alternative for the project and accepted by the NYCHA.

An attempt has been made in this investigation to define the conditions under which ammonium nitrate (AN) might detonate as a result of involvement in fire. The initiation of detonation by shocks derived from explosives or from projectile impact was investigated as a function of temperature and charge diameter. A new technique was devised to investigate the burning of raw and contaminated AN under pressure. No transition, to detonation in AN was obtained in the burning experiments. The critical diameter for detonation of fertilizer-grade AN was found to be quite small when the AN was at temperatures just below melting point; this indicates that initiation of detonation may be less difficult at elevated temperatures but such initiation by gas-phase detonation was shown to be unlikely. Transition from burning to detonation was obtained with AN intimately mixed with fuels that included polyethyl-ene, paper, and fuel oil when these were contained in vessels with restricted vents. However, the experimental results supported by an analytical study indicate that the initiation of detonation in AN from fire exposure in normal storage and from transportation incidents is quite improbable. The detonation of AN in recent incidents more likely may have resulted from the effects of adjacent explosions.

Augercast piles evolved in the late forties from the process of pressure grouting open holes backfilled with stone. In 1956, a patent was issued for a cast in situ pile by pumping high pressure grout through hollow-stem, continuous flight auger as the auger is gradually withdrawn from the ground. The patent rights expired in 1973 and the use of auger-cast piles greatly expanded with most large deep foundation contractors now installing augercast piles. At one time augercast piles had a bad reputation, partly because of not having a blow count to give some engineers a confidence factor and there were some quality issues. Over the years the quality issues have been eliminated and I am sure the augercast is the most installed pile in private industry and is now being used by some State Agencies.

Soon after the Broken Hill Limited started operations at their Iron and Steel Works at Newcastle, NSW, it was found necessary to install a mill for rolling small merchant bars, rounds, etc.An arrangement of the first mill laid down is shown on Plate 1., Fig. 1. This mill commenced operations on the 18th July, 1917.The feed for this mill was rolled in the existing 18-in. mill and sheared to the lengths required before being delivered to the billet storage yard. The billet storage yard is 90 ft. span, and is served by one 10-ton electric overhead travelling crane. Billets were placed on the billet bed preparatory to being charged into the heating furnace.The heating furnace was of the continuous recuperative with end discharge and had a hearth 40 ft. long by 10 ft. wide. The billets were pushed through the furnace by means of two hydraulic rams, which could either act together and push one row of billets, or act singly and push two rows of billets. This furnace was fired by producer gas from the producers shown on Plate I., Fig. l.The gas was conveyed to the furnace by means of a brick underground flue.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this non-hydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

Historically the hydrogen fluoride laden fume emitted from the electrolytic cells in the aluminium reduction process is further treated in pulse jet dust collectors. These dust collectors act as dry scrubbers performing two duties: adsorbing the gaseous fluoride emitted from the cells onto alumina dust; and collecting the alumina dust minimising particulate and fluoride emissions to the environment.Patented StarBag (TM) technology has been used in aluminium smelters in Australia as a means of increasing the dust collection and fluoride scrubbing capacity of existing collectors. This technology provides an alternative to major capital equipment upgrade where increased capacity is required, and potentially lowers the production cost per tonne of aluminium where capacity limitations are being realised and production expansion is required. This paper presents the findings of on-site pilot scale, and full production scale comparative tests, highlighting the operational and variable differences observed utilising the Star-Bag(TM) technology at Boyne Smelters Ltd in Australia. The results illustrate how this technology can be utilised to increase the hydrogen fluoride scrubbing efficiency and dust collection capacity of existing capital equipment.

Since April, 1923, the Scientific & Industrial Research Council of Alberta has had an analyst, Mr. W. P. Campbell, steadily employed analyzing coal samples taken by the provincial Mine Inspectors. Mr. Campbell has also analyzed a number of coal samples taken by one of the Council's Geological Survey parties. We have thus, at the time of writing, over four hundred analyses of Alberta coal, made by the same analyst, and strictly comparable. These samples come from widely distributed points, some 88 townships being represented. The stream of samples is still flowing in, and it is hoped by the end of this year that the number of townships represented will be increased at least fifty percent. The time has arrived to publish some of the data collected; but it must be clearly understood that this is merely a progress report, subject to revision as further information is obtained. Three hundred and fifty-three coal mines in the province were operated during 1923. The production per mine varied from 5 up to 500,000 tons. With this number of mines to examine (and fresh mines are being opened every year) it is a large task to make even a proximate analysis of representative samples from every mine. Any chemist will appreciate the fact that to make ultimate analyses representative of even the larger mines will be a long and tedious task. It has seemed better to make a comprehensive survey by proximate analysis and determination of calorific value before beginning the more thorough survey by ultimate analysis. This paper, therefore, deals only with proximate analyses and calorific values; and, owing to limitations of time and space, does not deal with other chemical and physical characteristics of coal, such as storage quality and fusibility of ash, important though these are.

"Micropiles are often installed to retrofit existing foundations that experience distortion and to underpin structures prior to future construction. The Dublin Road Pump Station project is an example of retrofitting due to a basal failure during construction that compromised the bearing capacity of the soils. A completed pump station settled and had to be restored to its original position, and work could not proceed until a new support system for the partially completed wet well could be designed and installed. The project involved the construction of three below-grade structures for a new pump station in a growing area of Jackson Township, N.J. The general contractor constructed three pump station structures consisting of a pump chamber, wet well and an inlet chamber in early 2006.The geologic conditions beneath the project site (Figure 1) consisted of loose/soft to medium dense/stiff sand, silt and clay to a depth of 40 ft below ground surface, underlain by medium dense to dense glauconitic silty fi ne sand. When the general contractor was constructing the wet well, which involved an internally supported sheet pile excavation 32 ft below the ground surface and 28 ft below the static groundwater level, basal failure, boils and ground loss occurred. Driven piles were installed to support the wet well structure, but additional ground loss was observed within and outside the sheet pile excavation, followed by settlement of the adjacent pump chamber structure. Post-failure investigations were conducted by Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, N.Y. (MRCE), a geotechnical and foundation engineering consultant. Their investigation concluded that the ground losses around the pump station structures had compromised the supportive capabilities of the natural subsoils.The owner engaged Moretrench, a geotechnical specialty contractor, to work with MRCE to develop a constructible solution to support the pump station structures in general and to restore the pump chamber to its original position. Knowing that ground loss had already occurred as a function of the initial basal heave and subsequent pile driving, the team selected micropiles as the preferred foundation element, primarily due to their flexibility in bypassing these disturbed zones and generating capacity as a function of grouting volume and pressure. Drilled piles were also recommended due to concerns about causing additional settlement of the pump chamber if driven piles were used."

Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.
