Polymetallic sea nodule is a good source of manganese having 22.3% Mn, 5.4% Fe, 6.14% Si, 1.1% Cu, 1.15% Ni, 0.076% Co & others. These nodules are available in plenty on the sea beds, generated over thousands of years. Nodules mainly consist of manganese dioxide and iron oxide phases and other metals are entrapped in the complex cage of these Mn-Fe oxides phases.World-wide research is going on sea nodules as an alternative future source of many metals, which has led to intensified efforts to develop practical and economical processes for recovery of these metals. Very little attempt has been made world over on manganese extraction from sea nodules. We at CSIR-NML, India have developed a direct reduction smelting process of nodules to recover manganese as Fe-Si-Mn alloy. This alloy is extensively used in the steel industry as deoxidizer and as an alloying element to make different grades of steel. Lab scale experiments were conducted to study the manganese distribution between Fe-Si-Mn alloy and FeO-SiO2-MnO-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slag at different temperatures by varying the basicity of the slag. The direct reduction smelting of nodules is carried out on 1 kg scale in 50 kVA electric arc furnaces to have Cu, Ni and Co alloy and Mn rich slag. This manganese rich slag is further treated in 50 kVA arc furnace to produce Fe-Si-Mn alloy. The composition of Fe-Si-Mn alloy obtained is in the range of Mn: 60-65%, Si: 14-17%, C: 1- 2%, S: 0.03% and the balance iron which is acceptable grade for industrial use. The equilibrium amount of MnO in the final slag is controlled by the temperature of the final melt and the silica, lime, alumina content of the final slag. Increasing the basicity of the slag plays a major role in minimizing the loss of MnO to slag, increasing the amount of SiO2 of the slag, increases the manganese loss in the slag. Kumtor Gold Company (KGC) currently operates the 500,000 tonnes per day Kumtor open pit gold mine located in the Issyk-Kul region of the Kyrgyz Republic at an elevation of more than 4,000 m. To supplement the open-pit mill feed with high grade underground ore from outside the current pit limits, KGC started pre-production design and development of the underground mine for the SB ore zone in late 2006. The initial phase of pre-production development consists of exploration and haulage declines which, upon completion, will provide ventilation and access to the underground mine. Design and construction of these declines presented many challenges to the project team considering the mines unique location at high altitude, the limited experience with Western underground mining techniques in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the impact of the nearby Davydov glacier and resultant ground conditions. Completion of the exploration and haulage declines was undertaken jointly by KGC and mine contractor, J.S. Redpath Limited (Redpath). The initial phase of development including several ground falls provided detailed information on geotechnical ground types and conditions that were useful in determining the overall mine design and methodology for production. This paper covers the various aspects of the design and construction process of developing the declines under the glacier, minimizing the likelihood of further ground falls, and the journey of both KGC and Redpath which led to the successful breakthrough between the declines on 01 July 2012.

Traditional engineering practice for concentrator design uses a mixture of risk minimisation options and capital minimisation approaches. Often this is based on the preferences and experiences of the engineers involved.A geometallurgical approach involves identifying primary lithology, alteration, and mineral dispersion patterns within a deposit to allow representative samples for test programs. This provides a method to infer from laboratory test results meaningful production data for larger amounts of the ore body. Geometallurgical models can be integrated into the resource block model and subsequent mine plan and can assist in predicting when difficulties in the processing route might be expected, allow adjustment of the design to compensate for these or provide an early warning system so that production forecasts can be more adequately developed. Simulation modelling is the process of creating a computer model of a real system based on mathematical logic. In simulated time, the model explores the randomness and chronological sequencing of events observed on real systems. The objective is to mimic the real system with sufficient accuracy to make predictions of real behaviour under experimental conditions. Amec Foster Wheeler often use the ‘discrete-event’ simulation modelling technique. This method is well suited for inclusion of the statistical variation of effects in unit operation, mechanical availability, throughput and operating strategy (based on historical operating data for equipment downtime), operating schedules and equipment capacity. The net result of the simulation model is an analysis that can quantify risks in terms of system performance and capital and operating costs.CITATION:Harbort, G and Quan, K, 2017. The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.

The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. "Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

"BAUER Foundation Corp. was one of three contractors awarded with the installation of a cut-off wall at the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation project. The cut-off wall was constructed up to 84 feet deep and 25 inches thick. It extended from the crest through the middle of the existing dike into the underlying peat, sand, and rock layers. BAUER used the cement deep soil mixing method of Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the wall. Soil mixing was facilitated by first removing the peat layer in the wall alignment using Kelly drilling and replacing it with suitable backfill, resulting in a secant pile wall arrangement of replacement columns. BAUER successfully finished four task orders with a total length of just over 10 miles. Up to six rigs of the types BAUER BG 28, BAUER BG 40 and RTG RG 25 were concurrently used to perform the replacement columns and the cut-off wall installation.The paper introduces the project, the geotechnical site conditions, and the requirements specified by USACE. It focuses on the specific adaptation of the CSM method to the site conditions and on the equipment used. Strength and permeability results obtained from an extensive testing program are presented. The impact of the curing conditions on lab and in-situ test results is studied, and test results are related to soil conditions.PROJECTThe Herbert Hoover Dike is a 143-mile-long dike encircling Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. When it was constructed in the 1930s and 1960s, the purpose of Herbert Hoover Dike was flood protection from hurricanes. However, during the 1970s a higher lake level was maintained permanently to provide local agriculture with water. Later, damage became apparent during two nearly back-to-back high water events in the 1990s, when numerous sink holes, seeps, pipes, and boils were observed (Fig. 1). In 2000, the Congress approved USACE to propose rehabilitation measures. The installation of a cut-off wall into the existing dike was chosen during the initial design process as the preferred measure to improve the safety of the dike (Davis et al. 2009).The first section of the dike to be rehabilitated was Reach 1 located along the southeast side of the lake between the towns of Port Mayaca and Belle Glade. An indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) multiple award task order contract (MATOC) was issued for this 22.4-mile-long stretch by USACE in 2007. BAUER Foundation Corp. (BAUER) was one of the three contractors that succeeded in the qualification process. Each of the three successful contractors had their own novel construction techniques. In the years 2008 to 2012 BAUER executed four task orders totaling over 10.0 lineal miles of cut-off wall with 3.3 million square feet of design surface area."

"In this paper, the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry was conducted based on the data from typical electrolytic aluminum plants of a China’s northwest province. The results show that under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.16 times/(cell• day) and anode duration as 5 minutes per day, equivalent emissions of CO2 reached 1.23 ton per ton of aluminum, in which PFC emissions accounted for about 71%. Compared with foreign advanced level, which is 0.87 ton per ton of aluminum under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.01 times/(cell•day) and anode duration as 0.46 minutes per day, there is much room for China’s aluminum industry to reduce GHG emissions. Since anode effect plays an important role on PFCs generation in electrolytic aluminum process, how to control anode effect strictly becomes the key factor for remarkable reduction of GHG emissions in China’s aluminum industry.IntroductionTechnology of aluminum electrolysis is a mature and efficient process of aluminum production. Due to the huge demand on aluminum worldwide, so resource consumption, energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the process of aluminum production are still large. The global output of aluminum reached 45193 kt in 2012. A large amount of CO2 and PFCs are produced in the process of aluminum production, and the greenhouse effect and environmental pollution caused by emissions of them is a concern. PFCs belong to a powerful greenhouse gas, thus emission reduction of PFCs is very important for aluminum electrolysis industry. At present, China's aluminum production accounts for about 33% of the world's aluminum production, and controlling PFCs emission has become the key point of pollution control of aluminum electrolysis industry in China [1].Taking the case of a typical electrolytic aluminum plant of a China’s northwest province, this paper studies the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry in China. GHG emissions of a China’s northwest province were calculated through investigating existing situation of aluminum electrolysis industry in the province, knowing capacity, output, main production technology and equipment level of aluminum electrolysis industry, and using the calculation framework and methods of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry, which were put forward by the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), the international aluminum association and other organizations at home and abroad. The list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry will offer useful information in promoting emission reduction of GHG in aluminum electrolysis industry, improve the efficiency of energy utilization."

In the iron ore beneficiation, tailings are inherent in the concentration processes to which the ores are subjected for the production of commercial products. The large generation of tailings has been motivating the study of technological alternatives for its reuse, with the development of processes that contemplate the concentration of fine ore particles present in the tailings, such as the reintroduction of these particles in the process of manufacture of the iron and steel itself, through the agglomeration techniques such as briquetting. The aim of this article is to study the technical feasibility of the production of iron ore tailings and coking coal briquettes for use in reduction reactors, through a systematic review of the literature on agglomeration, briquetting and self-reduction processes, covering the main variables that influence the production of high quality briquettes, such as binders use, binder behavior of coking coal, coal granulometry, iron ore and coal proportion, compacting pressure and temperature of thermal treatment and the effects of these variables on briquettes final properties.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Mingo County, W. Va.

Optimization of blasting requires the comprehension of processes including drilling through milling. The author has previously considered the role of powder factor in relationship to downstream processing costs. Recent modeling done by Lownds provides improved prediction of fragmentation based on the distribution and level of blast energy. Many recent studies have indicated improved downstream costs due to higher powder factor. However, changes in powder factor are accompanied by changes in pattern. The purpose is to segregate the effects of higher powder factor from powder distribution. This paper will attempt to use typical Mesabi Range iron ore parameters and costs to illuminate the subject of total process optimization.

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs. It describes briefly the procedure followed in concentrating hübnerite or? at the Ima tungsten mine, Lemhi County, Idaho. In October 1911 the Ima mill was utilizing combined gravity-concentration, flotation, and magnetic-separation units for the recovery of a tungsten concentrate and a pyritic silver concentrate approximately 120 tons of ore averaging 0.5 percent W03 is treated daily. The concentrates produced average 66 to 67 percent WO3.

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. However, the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the small demand for cobalt, and. the lack of adequate roads throughout the region precluded extensive exploration of the early discoveries in the area. Recent advances in alloy metallurgy, accentuated by wartime activities, greatly increased the demand for sources of domestic cobalt. Beginning In 1941, engineers of the Bureau of Mines conducted an examination and exploration program in the Blackbird district. This work was supplemented by an exploration program by engineers of the Howe Sound Mining Co., 730 Fifth Ave., New York 19, N.Y.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

"Surface subsidence caused by underground room-and-pillar mining operations and by solution mining operations have been studied separately but never in combination. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Using Salt_Subsid, a subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute, and ArcGIS, Esri's mapping platform, researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. Project backgroundFMC Minerals has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, WY, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 488 m (1,600 ft). Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed.The location from which the trona is removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations are important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found between surface subsidence measurements and the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find relationships between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured surface subsidence and solution mining production using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI, Clarks Summit, PA) to estimate the location, size and shape of the solution mining cavern. This study would determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by secondary solution mining activities. The subsidence and production data sets used in this study were collected over a seven-year period from 2008 through 2014."
