The Effect of Mineral Liberation on the Floatabilities of Pyrite, Arsenopyrite and Arsenian Pyrite for Carlin Trend Ores

Approximately 270,000 cu yd (20[0],000 cu m) of inferred subeconomic auriferous gravel resources were estimated in three Tertiary deposits in the Polk Springs study area (fig. 1 and table 1). These resources are exposed between tuff-breccia and lava flows of the Pliocene Tuscan Formation and Paleozoic or Mesozoic metamorphic rocks which suggests that although no deposits were identified in the other RARE II areas, they may be concealed beneath the Tuscan Formation. Difficulty in choosing drilling targets will make the likelihood of resource discoveries small. The development and production of these deposits would also be prohibitive under current economic conditions due to the thick covering of volcanic rocks. Recent stream gravels of Deer Creek in the Polk Springs study area contain enough gold to attract gold hobbyists; however, the stream gravels do not have sufficient volume to be considered a resource. Potential exists for additional auriferous gravels near the Occidental Mine in the Polk Springs RARE II area.

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. Through the development of innovative in-line mineral quantification sensors, the possibility has arisen to apply modern control theory to implement automatic process control for electrostatic high tension (“HT”) roll separators. A pilot-scale set-up was constructed to enable continuous tests to be carried out. A typical dry mill feed was continuously pre-heated and separated with a modern lab scale HT roll machine. The mineralogy as well as mass-flow of the non-conductor stream was quantified in-line, and the combined streams were re-circulated in an endless loop by a combination of vibration feeders and a bucket elevator. A fractional factorial experiment was executed to determine the most significant control parameters of the HT roll separator. Then a multi-input, multi-output dynamic model of the HT electrostatic separator was extracted by the application of standard system identification techniques for automatic control. The most important control variable to ensure a stable product grade could be identified. This allowed a robust single-input, single-output controller to be implemented. The process variable and set-point was mineral grade and the control variable was electrode voltage. Roll speed was manually adjusted while the mineral grade was kept on set-point by the control system. The roll speed, where maximum mass flow and therefore maximum yield was produced on-grade, could therefore be rapidly determined. Atmosphere humidity and ore temperature served as disturbances. Some other adjustable parameters were kept constant during the experiments, namely feed mineralogy, splitter settings and feed rate. Delivery of maximum yield, with a controlled grade, can improve production while reducing the burden of complex manual tuning. Manual tuning previously involved coping with multiple parameters with uncertain cross coupling influences on the end result. Even the end result was typically only known after completion of mineral assays. Automatic grade stabilisation and yield optimisation for a HT roll separator bank requires in-line measurement of mineralogy and mass flow, as well as the implementation of a robust process control system.

This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

A study of factors related to subsidence was specified in a project proposal entitled "Structural Analysis of Block-Caving Operation, San Manuel Copper Mine, Pinal County, Ariz.," approved by the Bureau of Mines early in 1953. This proposal was designed by Charles H. Johnson, then chief of the Base Metals Branch of the Minerals Division, Washington, D. C., assisted by Dr. Leonard Obert, chief of the Applied Physics Branch, Region VIII (now Region V), College Park, Md., and E. D. Gardner, chief mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. It read as follows: This project is a study of the mechanics of undercut block caving in a deep ore deposit. The San Manuel is a low-grade disseminated copper deposit containing nearly a half billion tons of ore lying at depths of 500 to 2,000 feet. Development is just starting. Production is to begin in 3 to 4 years (in 1956) at a rate of 30,000 tons of ore a day, or 60,000 tons of copper a year. A Government loan of $90,000,000 /subsequently increased to $94,000,000/ and a long-term Government purchase contract support the capital investment, which will total about $110,000,000.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. Well designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimising truck haulage on-road hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. However, practically designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often diff cult to achieve. Poorly designed and built roads exhibit high rolling resistance - a one per cent increase in road rolling resistance can typically reduce speed on ramp by as much as ten per cent - and on the f at by up to 26 per cent. In the current economic climates, investment and operating decisions come under scrutiny. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, healthier operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations - simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations - often in excess of 50 per cent of total costs for deep open-pit mines. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and reduced cost per ton hauled - is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these savings that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road is designed, and, critically, the interplay between a good design and safe, cost efficient haulage.This paper brief y summarises the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for more safe and efficient haulage systems, and the truck manufacturers' requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. These developments have been paralleled by the need to minimise haulage hazards, both from a health and safety perspective. Generally, both objectives have been achieved, but with some specific areas of design and operation still presenting ongoing potential health and safety hazards.The paper then summarises current design guidelines for these safety-critical issues, both from a road-design 'best-practice' and road management perspectives. Implementation of the approach is seen as a basis for reducing the potential of an under-designed mine road to lead to health and safety defects and secondly as a means of giving haul road safety and performance issues greater prominence in the minds of the road-user, operator, mine planner and designer alike.

The increase in the price of gold in 1933 was the cause of starting many activities in gold prospecting and mining; it led to investigations of many of the so-called desert placers in the Southwest, which heretofore had not been deemed of commercial importance. Among these, attention was called to some of the gravel beds in the vicinity of the Randsburg-Atolia mining districts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties, Calif., in which gold and scheelite, (calcium tungstate, CaW04) were said to be present. Following a partial sampling and testing of the gravel, large-scale operations were begun in 1935. During the same year more detailed sampling and testing of the gravel beds were done by the author. During 147 days, 1,239 test holes 28 inches in diameter were drilled; their total depth amounted to 16,705 feet. These test holes furnished 2,495 samples of an average volume of 1.0583 cubic yards bank run each; all of the material was run through a sample mill constructed on the property. Original and rather unusual sampling and testing methods had to be used; milling and mining methods for large-scale operations also offered difficulties. The primary purpose of this drilling and sampling campaign was to determine, over a large area, the amounts of gold and scheelite recovered by placer methods such as were already in use on the property. This paper describes sampling and testing methods employed by the author during the 1935 drilling campaign. LOCATION The gold and scheelite placer deposit is in the Atolia tungsten mining district about one-half mile west of the small mining town of Atolia and about 5 miles south of Randsburg in the Randsburg gold-mining district. The deposit lies near the foot of the Rand Hills, in the Mojave desert. The territory is served by hard-surfaced roads from the north and south; Los Angeles is 150 miles to the southwest. A branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes within 5 miles of Randsburg.

As a result of early experiments in underground mine illumination, the Bureau of Hines recognized the need for additional experience with the underground lighting of coal mines having low seam thicknesses. There was already experience with tile illumination of coal mines having higher coal seams, and this contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) was undertaken to contribute to the "low coal" experience. For the purpose of this contract, a "low coal? mine is defined as one having less than 45 inches of overall headroom in the working places. As a practical limit, 26 inches was the minimum coal seam thickness to be encountered in this program. In one instance, the maximum coal seam thickness was eight to ten feet, however, this particular work was at the direction of the Technical Project Officer (TPO) by virtue of the unique type of lighting arrangement that was to be evaluated which would be useful for low coal. At the outset of the contract, three major tasks were established. The first two tasks involved the installation of permissible fluorescent lighting equipment at two low coal mines. The intention was to illuminate mining sections in each case consisting of one or more machines. The third task was to illuminate a variety or mining equipment including a longwall. For the purpose of this report, the fol-owing identifies the particular installations associated with each task.

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 largely to determine methods of preventing coal-mine explosions; the Bureau's studies have proved that coal dust, except possibly that of some grates of anthracite, can initiate an explosion in the absence of gas and that its ability to extend or propagate an explosion of either gas or dust has been responsible for nearly all of the widespread explosions that have taken place in bituminous and other nonanthracite mines in the United States in the present century. It is believed by many persons that all atmospheric dusts may be harmful if breathed in large enough quantities for long enough time; bituminous coal dust is generally considered to be essentially harmless physiologically, yet there is abundant evidence of definite damage from inhalation of bituminous dust mixed or unmixed with the dust of other materials. Attention un¬questionably should be given to allaying dust in bituminous mines, especially at principal dust-producing sources. This publication enumerates some of the sources of dust and describes practical methods of employing water as one of the most effective of the known methods to allay dust in bituminous mines.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of deposits in the Bucks Lake and Chips Creek RARE II areas in Plumas and Butte Counties, California. These areas lie along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada on opposite sides of the North Fork Feather River and encompass an area of 62,800 acres (25,400 ha). Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Calaveras Formation are intruded by plutons of Mesozoic age. Mineral; of economic iterest are in quartz veins in metasediments close to these plutons; they are principally gold and silver with minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Molybdenum, copper, silver, and tungsten minerals occur in tactite along metasedimentary-granitic rock contacts. In both areas, auriferous Tertiary channel gravels have been extensively developed. Asbestos occurs in ultramafic rocks in both areas, and a limestone deposit was explored in the Chips Creek area. Gold is the principal economic mineral in the Bucks Lake RARE II area. The Shenandoah Mine (fig. 1, no. 19) contains 7,500 tons (6,800 t) of indicated and inferred subeconomic gold resources in sulfide-bearing, silicified metamorphic rocks of the Calaveras Formation (table 1). Similar rocks have yielded gold at the Edman and Megowen Mines, adjacent to the area. A high potential exists for additional lode resources in the area around the Shenandoah Mine. Callahan Mining Corporation personnel believe a multi-million ton disseminated gold deposit underlies the property.

A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

Two Hg-Au occurrences west of Bangko, Sumatra occur within the West Sumatra Permian Volcanic Plutonic Arc. The Melipun Hg-Au occurrence was exploited in the past and mineralisation occurs within a hydrothermally altered cupola of a buried intrusion. The Salak Hg-Au occurrence occurs within the outcrop of the Dusunbaru pluton, likely within the remnants of a caldera in which hydrothermal mineralisation was developed. Both occurrences formed late in the history of the volcanic arc, probably between the Triassic and early Jurassic. The Melipun occurrence may have potential at depth, but that at Salak is small and lies within the area of a proposed Geopark.CITATION:Crow, M J, van Waveren, I M and Hasibuan, F, 2015. Remarks of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General, Superintendent, Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company., Troy N. Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill
