This study is an appraisal of the feasibility of recovery and the possible chemical and physical uses of the limestone from the Greenbrier Formation in western West Virginia. Data on minability, occurrence, quality, and markets were obtained from published and unpublished sources and by a limited mail survey combined with personal contacts. The estimated costs of recovery by deep mining techniques are considerably higher than competitive surface and shallow subsurface operations. Compositional in formation available for this study was limited but indicated the suitability of the limestone for most physical uses and some chemical process uses in appraisal of the uses and demand reveals that immediate markets may be difficult to establish, but for some uses long-term prospects may be encouraging, especially if the quality of limestone would be suitable for lime manufacture or use as metallurgical fluxstone.

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

Each year hundreds of mineral specimens and numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic substances are received by the Bureau of Mines. In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.

The design of dippers for cable shovels has essentially remained unchanged for the last 100 years. In the past 10 years, shovel manufacturers have started taking another look at dipper design, resulting in changes that have borne models from major manufacturers that address some of the wear conditions and material retention problems that dominate maintenance and operational costs. However, with the exception of added lateral curvatures to the front and corners of the dipper, the geometry is essentially unchanged. This paper looks at the criteria that have resulted in the first new cutting dipper design in a century. The design is based on kinematic considerations, reflected in a revolutionary geometry that matches the range of motions of the shovel, designed to minimize wear, impact loading and power required to dig, thus maximizing productivity for a minimum energy requirement. The shape configuration is such that the weight of the dipper is reduced through wall thickness, enabling a larger capacity dipper to be conceived for the same shovel. Benefits are reflected in reduced operational and maintenance costs and increased productivity.

The average heat requirement per barrel of crude processed in the United states rose from 555,000 B. t. u. in 1939 to 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940, although crude runs increased from 1,237,840,000 barrels to 1,294,162,000 barrels in that period. Thus the almost invariable rule that the average amount of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil declines when total crude runs to stills increases was broken. (See fig. 1.) The reasons underlying the apparent loss in fuel efficiency in 1940 are quite obscure. There is little question but that the principle of heat exchange, the most important fuel saver, was used as extensively in 1940, as in 1939. A few companies replaced purchased power with electricity made at their plants, but for the country as a whole purchased electricity increased 7 percent, as compared with a 5-percent gain in crude runs to stills. Furthermore, the premise -the more complex the products the more fuel required -does not hold, as the yield of ?complex" products, including gasoline, declined in 1940.

This Final Report covers the work performed for Contract No. H0377043, "Cables for Face Equipment" from August 1, 1977 to April 1, 1981. It reports the findings in three areas of research: cable protection, circuit-breakers, and high-voltage cable couplers. Laboratory and analytical studies have been conducted in the three areas to determine proper circuit-breaker settings, cable sizes, and coupler performance. Also, an extensive field-monitoring program was established to relate in-mine epxerience to laboratory findings. Further, various pieces of equipment was designed for laboratory testing, particularly in the area of cable reeling and unreeling.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains ?1 ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other - major contaminants meet National Drinking Water Standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85% of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79% of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low- cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

The caisson foundation for Vent Building No. 6, at the southern landfall of Boston's Third Harbor Tunnel, was installed inside an unbraced concrete cofferdam 250 feet in diameter and about 70 feet deep. As a spectacular engineering feat, the cofferdam itself certainly ranks first. However, the foundation work within was no routine caisson job and made its own contribution to the state of the art. Comprised of 5 ft. diameter caissons socketed 10 to 16 feet in sound rock, it posed serious challenges in logistics, space limitations and time, requiring development of unique, purpose-made equipment. The unexpected discovery of significant depths of shattered rock overlying acceptable sound rock, along with other surprises of lesser import, compounded the problems. How these challenges were planned for, met and overcome is the subject of this paper.

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Ces travaux, financés par la division minière de CAMIRO et la mine Brunswick, consistaient à tirer violemment sans aucune face libre, et à laisser en place, un pilier de sulphures massifs au sud-ouest du niveau 1000 m. Cet article décrit l’approche et la démarche conceptuelle utilisées pour tenter de maximiser les fractures dans le pilier visé, tout en minimisant les dommages collatéraux à des infrastructures critiques se trouvant dans les environs immédiats. Les opérations de chargement des explosifs et les résultats du tir — en termes de ses performances, telles qu’évaluées par de l’équipement de monitoring rapproché des vibrations de tir, d’observations visuelles, et de son impact sur les contraintes de terrain locales — sont également discutés."

An important conclusion of the study is that altering the properties of the granulation water is a practical way of improving the sintering performance of blends that contain porous ores, and more work is under way to investigate other additives. Previous studies of iron ore blends containing pisolite ore showed that losses in sintering productivity were a result of deteriorating green-bed permeability. Pisolite ores are extremely porous and absorb a proportion of the water added during granulation. Although increased water addition could be used to counteract losses in productivity, the current study examined methods of inhibiting water absorption by pisolite ore as a means of improving productivity. Additives were used to alter the properties of the granulating water. With no increase in mix moisture contents pilot-scale sintering studies showed that sugar-based additives gave productivities that are higher than those obtained for a comparable ore blend containing haematite rather than the pisolitic ore. Several techniques of adding the sugar to the sinter mix were examined and found to increase productivity to varying degrees. Theoretical considerations, in some cases supported by experimental results, indicate that sugar-based additives not only inhibited water absorption by porous ore particles but also improved the permeability of the sintering bed. The study also suggested that, contrary to some commonly held views, the highly reactive nature of Yandi ore from Western Australia is beneficial for sintering. Porous ores enabled the formation of a strong sinter at fast flame-front speeds-both good strength and a short sintering time are requirements for high-productivity operation

This final report on Bureau of Mines Contract J0348005 presents the results of an investigation into the development of a Management Information System (MIS) for underground coal mines. The motivation for the research is the unrealized potential for increasing safety and productivity of the well developed mine monitoring system technology. The intent of this project was to examine the information issues, various design aspects of an integrated monitoring/MIS, and associated application concerns, such as the impact of this technology on safety. The work performed on this contract used mine ventilation as a prototypical example. The report is presented in five chapters and six appendices. In addition to the introduction and conclusions chapters, one chapter deals with ventilation MIS system requirements; another with the formulation of a knowledge-based expert system (KBES) structure to implement the integrated ventilation monitoring/MIS system, and one on the health and safety implications of the system. The appendices present details of the KBES system application with an example using a mine ventilation simulator (PSU/MVS). An important conclusion is that a KBES formulation of an integrated monitoring/ MIS for coal mine management is feasible and desirable.

Ongoing Outokumpu development in Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning Technology, involving all aspects of process chemistry, equipment and control, extends over a period of close to 30 years. The development in SX started with molybdenum and rhenium, continued with zinc, manganese, cobalt and nickel and is now focusing on copper. The OutoCompact VSF? SX concept, which has been recently introduced, is a honed version of earlier VSF? technology. The Outokumpu VSF? ("Vertical Smooth Flow") SX package includes the DOP ("Dispersion Overflow Pump") units, the Spirok Mixers, the OutoCompact Settlers including their DDG ("Dispersion Depletor Gate") fences and tank farm equipment such as the LOS ("Loaded Organic Scrubbing") tank as well as the CEP ("Copper Electrolyte Purifying") tank. Although the VSF? SX package can be implemented according to several optional lay-outs, the so-called Track version has lately been introduced to the advantage of new plants. The new OutoCompact SX technology decreases the footprint of future VSF? plants. The lay-out, including plant size flexibility, have further been improved by Outokumpu?s new OutoReverse settler technology. Two of several SX plants currently under construction rely on reverse settlers in order to maximize their performance. The Outokumpu EW technology includes process know-how as well as proprietary equipment. The copper EW package consists of permanent stainless steel cathodes based on wax-less technology and lead anodes utilising polymer concrete cells with the double contact bus bar system and ventilation hoods fitted for efficient mist control. The lifting of cell hoods, as well as cathode washing, is done by the cathode pulling crane. Proper electrolyte flows and matching current density further ensure high productivity of LME grade copper cathodes.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

I. INTRODUCTION The challenge of moving the use of nuclear energy from military to civilian use was first issued by President Dwight Eisenhower in his December 8, 1953 “Atoms for Peace” speech delivered at the United Nations. Eisenhower stated: “The United States knows that if the fearful trend of atomic military build up can be reversed, this greatest of destructive forces can be developed into a great boon, for the benefit of all mankind. * * * * The more important responsibility of this Atomic Energy Agency would be to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine, and other peaceful activities. A special purpose would be to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Atomic Energy Commission promoted the use of nuclear power as the answer to our nation’s energy problems. Nuclear power would provide energy too cheap to meter. The utility industry responded and numerous plants were planned with over one hundred constructed from the 1970’s to the 1990’s. Capital costs for nuclear power plants escalated due to permitting changes and public opposition, and the Three Mile Island incident caused new nuclear plant construction to cease. Today, we once again are experiencing a nuclear renaissance. Concerns over global warming and rapid projected increases in the demand for electricity have caused many nations to begin construction of new nuclear fleets. The price of uranium to fuel these reactors, which had dropped to an historical low of $7.10 in 2001, has surged to $56.00 as of October 2006. This paper will review some of the social, environmental, and government issues that are all playing a role in the resurgence of the nuclear fuel industry.

Reliable stress measurement using hollow inclusion gauges and monitoring stress change using borehole stress meters and borehole deformation gauges in anisotropic rock remains a challenge for the rock mechanics community. In this regard, the complex variable method advanced in 1983 for deducing stress in anisotropic rock is flawed and software is privileged. Fortunately, advances in computer hardware and software now enable fast, reliable reduction of hollow inclusion stress measurement data for determining stress in anisotropic rock. Monitoring stress change in anisotropic rock poses a different challenge but is also subject to numerical analysis. Stress measurement using a hollow inclusion (HI) gauge such as the triaxial Australian HI is done in four steps: 1) drilling a measurement hole, 2) installation of an HI, 3) stress relief of the HI by overcoring, and 4) data reduction. The last step, data reduction, is the focus of this work. The process is well-known in linearly elastic, isotropic rock (Worotniki and Walton 1976, Duncan Fama and Pender 1980). However, in case of linearly elastic, anisotropic rock the requisite technology is not readily available. This situation is somewhat surprising because anisotropy is more often the rule rather than the exception, especially in the neighborhood of ore bodies. Rahn (1984) has pointed out the potential for significant errors with neglect of anisotropy and the adverse consequences for engineering design. Amadei (1984) has also pointed out the potential for errors with neglect of anisotropic rock properties in stress measurement. Worotniki (1993) cites other studies that indicate potential for serious errors when doing measurements in anisotropic rock. In both theoretical cases (isotropy and anisotropy), data reduction is essentially a composite of solutions to boundary value problems in linear elasticity. In the finite element approach, the analysis is a simulation of gauge hole drilling, installation and overcoring. Two important advantages with the finite element approach are a more faithful representation of the conditions of HI stress measurement than approximated in theory and the capability for handling rock whether isotropic, transversely isotropic or fully anisotropic

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. The process of granulating slags, mattes and metals is more than a century old, and a number of different systems have been developed to accomplish this task. These systems have followed an evolutionary path, and may be characterized by common elements in terms of molten material handling, granulation methods and post-granulation processing. This paper will summarize the more common systems used in the metals industry, with particular reference to non-ferrous applications.
