Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide The raw material for sulphuric acid manufacture is clean SO2 gas. It comes from (i) burning molten by-product sulphur; (ii) roasting or smelting metal sulphide concentrates, and (iii) decomposing contaminated organic chemical process sulphuric acid catalyst. Efficient gas cleaning is required for metallurgical and contaminated acid decomposition gases, especially the former. Sulphuric acid is made from SO2 gas by (i) oxidizing the SO2(g) to SO3(g) in contact with supported liquid-phase catalyst then (ii) reacting the resulting SO3(g) with the water component of 98.5 mass% H2SO4, 1.5 mass% H2O acid. This paper discusses the reasons for these process steps and indicates how acidmaking can be controlled and optimized. Special emphasis is placed on SO2(g) oxidation efficiency and how it is influenced by feed gas composition, feed gas temperature, catalyst composition, catalyst bed pressure, number of catalyst beds, and double versus single contact acidmaking. In addition, a review of various other treatment methods for SO2-bearing gases is provided. A brief description of each process is included along with commentary on their technical and economic applicability for use at metallurgical facilities.

The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. Their somewhat diverse findings were published for the most part in the Australian technical press which, unfortunately, is not sufficiently represented in foreign libraries.The following article is based on an eighteen months' study in the district for Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd., preceded by four years' experience with almost identical rock types in the, Porcupine district of Ontario. The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

Six simulations by the Mpnte Carlo method employing both classical and geostatistical techniques are presented for the determination of the probability distribution of the in situ value of a coal seam. To avoid the problem of qualitative estimation of parameter variability in the calculation of an arbitrary seam value, only data values from borehole information were used to quantify the variation in four coai seam parameters.The method which is suggested as being the most appropriate is a particular geostatistical approach that employs the best linear unbiased estimate and the error of estimation for a number of two dimensional blocks. The results indicate that the variance of the coal seam unit value may be much higher than that indicated by the classical approach because of the spatial variability that is properly incorporated in the geostatistical approach.The model used in the Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic value of a coal seam can be extended to incorporate all those parameters which are necessary for a true estimation of the probability distribution of the coal seam value. A time value concept for discounting can also be incorporated to optimize the economic return of a coal mining project.

The application of titanium alloys is limited to 550°C due to their poor oxidation resistance. It is known that the addition of niobium decelerates the oxidation of titanium alloys whereas elements like vanadium do not improve titanium’s oxidation resistance. The underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. In the present study, different binary titanium-niobium and titanium-vanadium alloys as well as commercially pure titanium were investigated. Oxidation experiments were carried out at 800°C up to 288 hours followed by metallographic analyses to study the oxide layer morphology as well as the microstructure at the interface. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mappings were used to identify possible changes in the distribution of the alloying elements. In addition, micro-focused hard X-ray experiments were performed to layer-wise analyse the phase composition in selected samples. As expected, the niobium containing alloys show a better oxidation performance compared to commercially pure titanium and the titanium-vanadium alloys. The oxide layer consisted of TiO2 and Ti2O3. Depending of the niobium content, a niobium-rich layer developed below the metal-oxide-interface minimising oxygen diffusion into the titanium matrix. Based on these results, the minimal niobium content needed for improved oxidation resistance was identified so that alloys of technical relevance can now be developed.

Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

The development of the carbonization of brown coal briquettes to produce a hard char suitable for use in place of imported hard coke has continued in Victoria, and an experimental carbonization plant has recently been commissioned at Morwell by the Gas and Fuel Corpora.tion to assess the prospects for the commercial production and marketing of hard char in Victoria. The char offers advantages in its very low ash content and its uniform lump size, while the indications are that it could be marketed at a price competitive with that of imported hard coke. The hard char is unique amongst metallurgical fuels in combining a high reactivity with high physical strength, and research by the University of Melbourne into its utilization in foundry cupolas for melting iron has shown how modifications could be made to take advantage of these properties. An 18 inch experimental cupola has been built to test in practice the predictions made from this fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONSteady development has continued in Victoria from the promising laboratory researches at the University of Melbourne which were reported to the 1955 Annual Conference of The Institute (Worner, 1956). This work had shown that a hard lump char could be produced by the high temperature carbonization of standard industrial briquettes by careful control of the heating conditions, and that the special briquetting techniques adopted in Germany were unnecessary with Yallourn brown coal. Continuation of this research has led to the refinement of carbonization techniques and has increased the strength of the char until it has equalled that of conventional metallurgical cokes.

"SynopsisThe Kanichee open pit mine and milling complex is situated approximately four air miles north-west of Ternagami, Northern Ontario, in Strathy Township. Mining and milling production commenced in January 1974.Milling throughput currently is at a rated capacity of 500 tons per day, seven days per week. A bulk nickel-copper sulphide concentrate is produced, and is trucked daily to the smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, some 120 road miles from Kanichee. Concentrate grades produced are in the order of 4.0% Ni and 8.0% Cu, with corresponding recoveries of 68-70% nickel and 86-90% copper. Stage additions of 100% guar-gurn solution reagent to the flotation cells for depression of talcose minerals, proved to be the major break-through for optimizing metallurgical performance.2. HistoryThe present Kanichee Mining property is known to old-timers in the Temagami area as the former Cuniptau Mine. Several attempts were made in the mid '30's and 40's to extract the ore at a profit, but each effort resulted in failure.In 1933-36, Cuniptau Mines Development Co. Limited, later called Cuniptau Mines Limited, sank a 245-foot vertical shaft and completed 2,200 feet of lateral work on the 100-140 and the 225 foot levels. Fifteen tons of ore were sent for testwork to the Mines Branch, Ottawa, Ontario.Cuniptau Mines Limited, in 1936, milled some 3,000 tons, and the resulting concentrate was put through a pilot smelter situated on the present mine site. Metallurgically, the smelting results were not encouraging, primarily due to the high melting point of the talcose minerals in the concentrate. From the period 1937-48, minor exploration work was done by Ontario Mining Corporation, Ontario Nickel Mines Limited, and Trebor Mines Limited. During the period 1948-49, 128 diamond drill holes, totalling 40,900 feet were evaluated by Trebor Mines Limited. In 1961, the name was changed to Ajax Minerals Limited, during 1968, five diamond drill holes were sunk, totalling 1,700 feet. Since that period the property has remained idle."

There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

"Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. Two 10 in. by 4-in. timbers are bolted to these plates, the distance between them being adjusted to suit the holes in the winch bedplate, which is bolted to the 10-in. by 4-in. timbers.Two short lengths of 3 in. pipe are welded to each bedpiece at 4 ft. 4 in. centres. When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in plane-polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed which are characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film!coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins. Bituminous coal gave the best results.

Twin-roll continuous casting technology is rapidly approaching commercialisation. Fundamentally different than conventional continuous casting, heat transfer and hence solidification during twin-roll casting are governed by the interfacial melt/mould thermal resistance, as opposed to the resistance of the solidifying shell. Under these conditions the interface resistance is predominantly controlled by the melt/substrate wetting behaviour. The very early stages of melt/mould contact are characterised by highly transient heat transfer conditions. The overall melt cooling rates prior to the formation of the first solid are reported to be in the range of 1000 - 50000 K/s with melt undercoolings of up to 300 K. At the points of intimate melt/mould contact the thermal resistance is approaching zero, where cooling rates and undercooling much larger than those reported in the literature are probably occurring. Improved wetting will reduce the energy barrier for nucleation while at the same time increasing the cooling rate of the liquid. Since the overall nucleation rate is controlled both by the rate of cluster formation and the rate of atom transfer to the nucleus, a critical cooling rate will exist above which the nucleation rate is expected to be reduced. Under these conditions, it is possible that the first solid phase to form is a metastable glass which subsequently transforms into a crystalline phase. The implications on nucleation and early growth are also discussed.

This paper presents the analysis and measurements of blast-induced ground vibrations during the construction of Istanbul Kagithane – Piyalepasa – Dolapdere – Dolmabahçe highway tunnels. These tunnels known as T1 and T2 are being constructed by a joint venture group. Within the scope of the study, the particle velocities and frequencies associated with 126 shots during the advancement of the tunnels were monitored and analyzed by vibration monitors at the test site. During the statistical analysis, three different predictor equations widely used in the literature were used to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) and the results and comparison of the predictor equations are presented in this paper. Finally, the particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events were evaluated according to USBM and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to determine the damage risks of the neighboring buildings and structures.

This paper examines the effect of prill size consistency, internal panicle density, and oil absorbency on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO)-emulsion blends. By analyzing these physical properties of prill and the nature of the blending process, a mathematical model has been developed to theoretically predict blend densities. Calculated densities can now be compared to actual field densities to give an operator a basis for comparing various manufacturers’ emssions and Ammonium Nitrate (AN) during bid solicitation. The lowest priced emulsion and/or AN may not be the most economical, due to the impact of specific physical characteristics. These factors dictate the blending mechanics and resulting density yields for various mixes. The research was driven from observed ‘field’ mixing relationships and data. Ultimately, such a model can be an effective tool in evaluating blends from a cost and performance basis.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.
