For some years past the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain has been making an intensive search for. materials that would be more efficient than rock dust and that could replace it wholly or in part as a moans of preventing the prorogation of coal-dust explosions in mines5/ In the course of this work several rock ducts and numerous inorganic compounds were tested. The results place incombustible substances in two main groups; (1) Those whose effect in suppressing the combustion of coal dust is proportional to their capacity for absorbing heat, and (2) those that shoo much higher effectiveness than would be expected from their heat capacity. The first group includes several inorganic compounds and materials commonly ground for use as rock dust, such as shale, gypsum, and limestone. Outstanding examples of the second group are compounds of the halogens6/ with the alkali metals,7/ especially potasium and sodium8/. British investigators term those salts "inhibitors" because it is assumed that their presence has a hindering or inhibiting effect on one or more of the chemical reactions that together constitute combustion. In other words, the action of an inhibitor is postulated as chemical rather than physical; theoretically, the effect is to prevent liberation of energy instead of to absorb energy already liberated.

Underground mine mapping is a critical component of understanding the controls on ground instability. Many relatively localized examples of ground failure are associated with geologic features, such as faults, joints, compaction zones, or sedimentological transition zones. In contrast, long-running, directional roof falls are associated with regionally directed horizontal stress fields, which are induced by tectonic plate interactions in the earth?s crust. When stress-related features are distinguished from geological features, underground mapping can be an effective method for inferring the direction of horizontal stress at individual mines. Comparisons with data compiled in the World Stress Map confirm that underground mapping can be a valid method for determining the orientation of maximum principal horizontal stress at a variety of scales, ranging from individual mines to an entire mining district or coal basin. Comparisons are presented between the maximum horizontal stress directions inferred by MSHA?s Roof Control Division through underground mapping and the azimuths of maximum horizontal stress in the World Stress Map database for North America?s Pennsylvanian-aged Appalachian, Illinois, Black Warrior, and Arkoma Basin coal fields. The comparison indicates that azimuths are similar for both data sets, even where variations in the direction of horizontal stress are present. It is interpreted that inconsistencies in direction are attributable to near-surface affects such as deeply incised stream valleys, or to fault zones that represent heterogeneities in the crust.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. Nickel laterite pressure acid leach plants and reduction roast plants have had a checkered history in their engineering, construction, startup and operational reliability. Many potential projects have been the subject of detailed studies over the last thirty to forty years but relatively few have advanced to commercial production. Four reduction roast plants are currently operating, an additional one was partially constructed but never completed, and another was started up in 1974 and shut down after 12 years operation. Three acid leach plants have been built and commissioned in the last five years, trying to follow the example of the Moa Nickel plant in Cuba. An additional acid leach plant project is currently on hold, following limited construction work, its future subject to review by the owner because of potential cost over-runs. This paper attempts to discuss difficulties that may be encountered as a project is developed and will address factors which may affect production ramp-up schedule, long term production performance and overall production success. Comparisons are made with ramp-up performance at other large metallurgical plants that employ some comparable unit operations. The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

"Abstract The modulus of elasticity of pile material (E) is an important parameter for the interpretation of both static and dynamic loading tests on piles. This value is commonly assumed to be constant with depth though it may not be true for deep bored piles due to the chosen casting method and/or selfweight consolidation. To provide evidence to support this proposition, the results of compressive strength tests on core samples taken from four different studies have been presented. The results show a marked increase in the strength and stiffness values with depth. The results of crosshole ultrasonic tests conducted at another site also confirm the same pattern. It is therefore recommended that before load testing a pile the distribution of the E values along the pile axis should be investigated. This will ensure the use of a realistic elastic modulus value and hence the correct interpretation of thedistribution between the shaft and end resistances.IntroductionThe modulus of elasticity of pile material (E) is an important parameter for the interpretation of both static and dynamic load tests on piles. Multiplying E by the strain measured by either strain gauges (e.g. ASTM D4945) or tell-tales (e.g. Geffen and Amir, 1971) gives the stresses acting at a given pile section. Typically, in the absence of better information, the value of E is derived from laboratory tests on concrete cubes or cylinder specimens taken on site and is assumed to be constant along the pile. While this may be correct for pre-fabricated concrete piles that are cast in horizontal molds, it may not be true for cast-in-place piles that are produced in the vertical position.There are at least two factors that may contribute to the change in concrete properties with depth in a bored pile. First, the casting methods may be by free fall in dry holes (e.g. Kiefer and Baker, 1994) or by using a tremie tube if support fluids are used. In the former case, the earlier batches reach the bottom of the pile bore at a higher velocity and are thus compacted under higher energy. Second, regardless of the casting method, the fresh concrete in the pile bore will always consolidate at least partially under its own self weight. The materials in the lower parts of the pile will therefore experience a higher consolidating pressure. This can reduce the pore volume and the water content in the wet concrete, thus changing the properties of the hardened concrete. Recent research by Justs et al. (2011) has shown that even a relatively small pressure can have a significant positive effect on concrete properties such as compressive strength and stiffness. However, the possible change of concrete properties with depth is commonly ignored by foundation engineers in the current design practice."

This paper will discuss the inherent value engineering associated with the design and construction of approximately 184,000 SF of anchored tieback wall, installed as part of the widening and drainage improvements for KY9 in Campbell County, Kentucky. The total project is 2.2 miles in length. The anchored walls, excavation grading and drainage total to a complete project cost of $28.4 million. This is one of the largest design-build projects undertaken by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It also features another first for the Transportation Cabinet - the general contractor is responsible for quality control/quality assurance. The project is located just south of Cincinnati, OH and is situated along the east bank of the Licking River. The slopes along this stretch of the river have had a long history of movement and instability. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advertised the anchored wall portion of this project to be designed and constructed by pre-approved specialty contractors. The Transportation Cabinet provided the basic design parameters to each specialty contractor. Aspects to be discussed include the site and project history, previous attempts at slope stabilization along existing KY9, the technical proposal and bidding process, and the actual design and construction.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Federal Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and nil stifle.5 The. Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because anal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form Will Ire valuable. Caving of the second lift of the E26 orebody at Northparkes Mines was monitored with a comprehensive package of instrumentation, including an ISS seismic monitoring system. Seismicity was collected by an array of 19 triaxial accelerometers and 9 uniaxial geophones, giving a high quality seismic data set. The seismic response to block caving at Northparkes has been divided into two papers. The first paper focuses on the seismicity during undercutting. The second paper deals primarily with the seismicity during cave propagation during initial cave production. In this paper, traditional seismic monitoring concepts are applied to seismicity during cave mining. More than 40 000 seismic events were recorded during cave undercutting between February and January 2004. Events up to local magnitude +1.3 were recorded near the mine during undercutting, with event rates of up to 500 per day. Analysis of frequency-magnitude distributions, S-wave to P-wave energy, and temporal variations in event magnitude all gave insight into the seismicity recorded. In addition, a new technique, called apparent stress time history, was shown to be sensitive to stress change from undercut blasting, and useful to identify significant periods during cave development. A significant difference was identified between the cave back location and the halo of seismic events above the cave. Throughout the undercutting, the a seismic zone of loosening was typically 50 to 70 metres in vertical thickness. Based on the seismicity, a stress driven rock mass failure model is proposed. Early in the undercutting, seismicity and movements in the seismogenic zone were directly triggered by stress change from undercutting. Towards the end of undercutting, seismicity was virtually uncorrelated with undercut blasting, and likely due to the onset of cave initiation.

"In flotation circuits, direct measurement of the volumetric flow rate delivered by electromagnetic flowmeters is often difficult to obtain particularly due to piping and flow constraints. However, on-line material balance calculation could offer a reliable alternative to flow rate sensing. This paper describes an on-line material balance software package as applied to a copper flotation circuit for mass flow rate estimation mainly based on the output of an x-ray fluorescence onstream analyser. Rule-based procedures for the management of the main calculation modules are designed and integrated to a Comdale expert system. Attempts to diagnose the flotation process from mass flow rate data are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimisation has become more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decade. Therefore, new process variables need to be inferred or measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and chemical characteristics of the ore and due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures.A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network counting more than two dozens of slurry streams. "In full scale mineral grinding operations, the steel balls normally utilized as auxiliary grinding media get to be consumed at different specific rates, as determined by 3 basic mechanisms: abrasion/corrosion (wear), impact ball breakage and impact surface spalling, the latter relating to the removal of rather small pieces of steel coming off the exposed surface of the balls due to repetitive impact with other balls in the charge or the surrounding mill liners. In conventional ball milling applications, the clearly predominant mechanism is gradual wear by abrasion/corrosion. In the case of SAG mills, where the make-up balls may be as large as 6”f diameter, breakage and spalling mechanisms are significant contributors to total ball consumption, although not to the extent of overriding wear mechanisms.Ball wear has been well characterized by the Linear Wear Theory, as presented at the last CMP 2014. Impact breakage has been customarily monitored, at the ball manufacturing site, via Drop Ball Tests (DBT) consisting of repeatedly dropping balls from a standard height and accounting for the number of broken balls and the weight loss (spalling) of the remaining unbroken balls. When properly conducted, DBT’s should provide meaningful indications of the breakage and spalling resistance of large diameter balls. The current publication is focused on the interpretation and projection of DBT results to full industrial scale, taking into account all 3 mechanisms of grinding media consumption in SAG mills.INTRODUCTIONA thorough, quantitative understanding of the independent contribution of all active grinding media consumption mechanisms is of the highest practical relevance, particularly in semiautogenous (SAG) milling operations where ball breakage and spalling can not be ignored or neglected, as it has been normally acceptable for conventional ball milling processes. The high severity impact conditions currently imposed in typical SAG mill environments create serious challenges to the manufacturers and suppliers of large diameter (5”–6”) SAG balls, whose products must be capable of surviving such harsh operational conditions with minimum breakage or spalling."

The growth of "Unit Load-cargo handling technology in world cargo lin- er trades over the last decade has cre- ated a situation in which special pur- pose-vessels (cellular container ships, roll-on/roll-off vehicle deck ships and Lash type vessels) are rapidly replac- ing conventional cargo ships, the principal means previously available for transporting heavy lifts. Consequently heavy lift traffic has tended to accumulate awaiting ship- ment, especially where discharge is required in "off beat" locations. A partial solution to this problem will be provided by new and small but exceptionally versatile ocean going heavy lift carriers now finding their way into world trade routes. These new ships combine extremely high lifting capacity, high manoeuvreability and exceptionally shallow draft with bow and stern Ro/Ro capability. They can handle rolling loads of exceptional size and weighing up to 1,000 tons Each. But the problem is a far larger and more serious but essentially a domestic one. Major industrial pro- jects in Australia will require pro- gressively heavier and larger plant and construction sites are becoming much more inaccessible. Whereas these new ocean going heavy lift carriers have ample capacity to satisfy part of the total transport requirement, there is clear evidence to show that domestic transport resources have little if any potential for increase in capability at the same rate as demand or at the same rate as sea transport facilities. Resolution of the larger problem is within reach but only through a pro- perly co-ordinated approach to future planning for the overall needs of large scale projects on a national basis. This co-ordinated approach must involve Federal and State government transport administrators, railway and highway authorities, shipping and road haulage interests and finally the planners of the projects which require these improved heavy haulage services.

During the past 16 years, the authors have successfully used high-capacity rock anchors installed inside open-ended pipe piles, driven to bedrock, to provide uplift and overturning resistance for various structures including piers, bridges, power plant components and commercial buildings. These systems were ultimately used on the projects due to a combination of high uplift forces or overturning moments on the structures and the relatively poor subsurface conditions present at the sites. Other, foundation systems such as rock-socketed drilled shafts and spin fin piles were considered but were found to be economically prohibitive or not technically feasible.

Vertical circular shafts have been proposed for multiple access to high level nuclear waste deep geologic repositories. Shaft construction is a critical path item in the commissioning of a repository. Other constraints on the shaft design and construction criteria include the lack of design precedence for long term performance and the importance of minimizing rock and groundwater disturbance. A comparative evaluation of conventional and mechanized shaft sinking techniques is presented in the context of the particular geologic and design constraints. Technical and non-technical factors for blind drilling, blind boring, raise-reaming, drill-and-blast and ream-and slash methods are reviewed for typically "hard rock" and "salt" type repository sites. Appropriate shaft designs are developed, the suitability of each method to the particular requirements evaluated and construction costs and schedules determined. The explicit appraisal of the significant design factors for each method serves as a rational basis for the preliminary selection of the most suitable sinking technique for a particular set of site/design conditions.

Downhole Seismic Testing (DST) is a very popular applied seismology site characterizing tool within geotechnical engineering. A challenging aspect of DST is to characterize the acquired seismic data sets to determine the analysis method that will result in the most accurate interval velocity values. BCE has invested considerable resources into developing Seismic Trace Characterization (STC), which uses various independent parameters of the acquired data at a particular depth. Initial work in this area resulted in the selection of the linearity estimate from the polarization analysis, the cross correlation coefficient of the full waveforms at the particular depth and the preceding depth and a uniquely developed parameter referred to as the signal shape parameter for this characterization. Subsequent analysis in STC identified two other parameters: the Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and the Peak Symmetry Differential (PSD). The paper briefly describes these parameters and then outlines how they can guide the data analysis to derive more accurate results, especially near surface, which is especially important to assess the liquefaction potential in areas prone to earthquakes, such as California. The process will be illustrated with actual data from another area prone to earthquakes, namely New Zealand. 1. INTRODUCTION The near surface characterization of low strain in-situ shear wave velocities (VS) has proven critical for liquefaction assessment. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which dynamic loading of saturated soil results in the material properties to change suddenly from a solid state to a liquefied state. VS is an important parameter for evaluating liquefaction potential due to fact that it is influenced by many of the variables that influence liquefaction (e.g., void ratio, soil density, confining stress, stress history, and geologic age (Andrus et al., 1997)). Aki and Richards (2002) also outline that the amplitude of ground motion should depend on the density and shear wave velocity of near surface soils and rocks according to the theory of wave propagation. Since the change in density with the increase in depth is relative minor compared to that of the shear wave velocity, the latter is a very useful parameter to represent site conditions (Stewart et al., 1997). Bray (2014) and his colleagues carried out an extensive geotechnical analysis of the catastrophic liquefaction that occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2010 and 2011 and found that near surface rather than deep liquefaction resulted in extensive foundation damage.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has driven significant advancements in autonomous robotic systems, particularly in subsea exploration and offshore mineral dredging. This review examines the latest developments in electrically powered quadrotor-track subsea robotic crawlers, highlighting their potential to enhance efficiency, mobility, and adaptability in challenging underwater environments. The integration of advanced automation, artificial intelligence, and real-time control systems has paved the way for more effective robotic solutions in offshore mining. This study explores the dynamic performance of hydraulic crawlers to quadrotortrack robotic dredgers, focusing on their propulsion, navigation, and stability under high hydrodynamic conditions. By leveraging state-of-the-art technologies such as lithium-ion battery power systems, intelligent microprocessors, and sensor-based control mechanisms, these robotic crawlers offer a promising alternative to conventional subsea excavation methods. Furthermore, the review analyses recent experimental and simulation-based studies that assess the feasibility and performance of these systems in real-world applications. The findings of this review provide valuable insights into the role of 4IR in transforming subsea robotics for offshore mineral dredging. By addressing existing limitations and identifying key technological advancements, this study contributes to the ongoing development of nextgeneration robotic systems capable of operating efficiently in extreme underwater conditions
