Traditionally quality control of iron ore sinter, its raw materials and raw mixtures has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. The mineralogical composition that defines the properties is often not monitored. XRD analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using Partial Least-Square Regression (PLSR) has been successfully established to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than 8 minutes per sample. Both methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. In addition the Rietveld method was used to quantify the phase content of raw mixtures to monitor the composition of blending beds.

In order to determine the most suitable refractory products and improve the lining lifetime for the diverse furnaces used in the nonferrous metal industry, corrosion tests are performed at RHI’s Technology Center. The practical facilities include the cup test, induction furnace, rotary kiln, and drip slag test described in this paper, which enable a comprehensive understanding of the chemo-thermal brick wear on a pilot scale. The corrosion trials are performed with actual slags generated during operations at a customer’s plant. To determine the highest influencing wear parameter, every single test is combined with a detailed mineralogical investigation and thermochemical calculations performed using FactSage. Based on the results, tailored refractory solutions for the nonferrous metal industry can be provided in combination with trials conducted at the customer’s site.

"This paper presents a systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated gold deportment methodology developed for complex refractory gold and copper-gold ore bodies. Quantification of gold deportment for these ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies.INTRODUCTION Studies were initiated on various ore complex ore and also on samples representing various process streams. These complex copper-gold single refractory, double and triple refractory gold ores are mainly composed of silicates and/or carbonates with moderate amounts of clay and mica, along with minor amounts of sulphides and organic carbonaceous matter. Variable proportions of visible gold and “invisible gold” (sub-microscopic gold) were noted in different mineral phases for various ore types and process stream samples. Invisible gold commonly occurs as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and galena) and other phases (including hematite, magnetite and goethite) for different refractory ores. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing along with finely disseminated carbonaceous matters adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits for most of these double and triple refractory ores. This paper discusses applications of an integrated gold deportment technique developed for different types of gold and copper-gold ores, namely, complex copper-gold, double and triple refractory gold ores (Chattopadhyay and Gorain, 2014; Chattopadhyay et. al., 2016). Various process streams from flotation and gold leaching circuits were investigated. Different concentrates and tailings samples from flotation circuits whereas feed and discharges from pressure oxidation (POX) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) residues were used from gold processing circuits."

"Sound Transit’s East Link Project, a $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile light rail extension, will connect downtown Seattle with the rapidly developing east side cities of Bellevue and Redmond. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the Project is the 2,435 foot long Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT), which will be constructed through the central core of Bellevue underneath 110th Avenue NE using a combination of Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and cut and cover tunneling. The 1,980 foot long central SEM component of the DBT will be mined at shallow depth through challenging and complex geology, comprised of glacially overconsolidated soils, containing both regional and perched groundwater conditions and in close proximity to existing high rise buildings. The paper shares lessons learned from the planning decisions and risk based approach to the investigation, design and procurement processes which shaped the DBT configuration and enabled a successful transition to the project’s construction stage. INTRODUCTION The East Link Project is a voter-approved $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile extension of the existing Sound Transit (ST) light rail transit (LRT) system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington via I-90, to the cities of Bellevue and Redmond on the east side of Lake Washington. With targeted completion in 2023, East Link will provide riders with an efficient and reliable connection between the largest population and employment centers on the east side and downtown Seattle. The project alignment is indicated in Figure 1 below.ST completed the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase of the East Link project in late 2011. Subsequently the final design contract for the easternmost seven miles of the project was awarded to the H-J-H Team, a joint venture comprised of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering and Hatch Mott MacDonald in February 2012. H-J-H’s final design scope includes approximately 7 miles of double-track LRT between the east end of the I-90 East Channel Bridge and the Overlake Transit Center Station. While the project scope is extensive and diverse, the focus of this paper is the DBT. The DBT is located immediately north of the East Main Station, and travels approximately one half mile through downtown Bellevue under 110th Avenue NE between Main Street and NE 6th Street; terminating at the Downtown Bellevue Transit Center (BTC) Station. The location and extent of the DBT is indicated in Figure 2."

Carburization behavior of molten iron in blast furnace is an essential part of BF long campaign technology. Maintaining carbon content stable is an important prerequisite to ensure the high production of the blast furnace. In this paper, the important aspects of the research progress which mainly including the study of iron carburization at the upper and the lower parts of the blast furnace was reviewed. Indirect carburizing is the main way at the top of the blast furnace. The content of carbon in metallic iron increases with the reducibility of iron ore improved. The thermodynamics and kinetics conditions are good for carburization reaction to take place at the bottom of the blast furnace. Carbon content of molten iron increased by coke carburizing. Meanwhile, the drawbacks of the existing literature on iron carburization behavior were analyzed and new research directions of iron carburization were proposed in the future.

This effect makes subsequent machine sorting of ore from waste rocks or overburden possible using infrared sensing. This paper reports on the 2450 MHz microwave response of a variety of sulphide minerals by mesh size and spatial distribution, as they might occur in ore rocks. The implications for infrared ore sorting are discussed.

The major industrial uses of char or semicoke produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal4/ are as fuel for generating electric power, for blending with metallurgical coking coal as a substitute for low-volatile coals, and for gasification to produce synthesis gas for chemical purposes. This paper discusses various methods for carbonizing coal, emphasizing processing of the noncoking coals to produce char for thermal power-plant fuel and for blending with metallurgical coking coals and tar for chemical use. Low-temperature carbonization is a relatively simple processing step involving heating coal to about 900° to 1,200° F. to decompose the coal into 4 main products: (1) Semicoke or char; (2) complex, partly oxygenated liquid hydrocarbons or tar; (3) fixed gases; and (4) water. If the coal is heated rapidly under conditions that prevent decomposition of the primary products, 68 to 87 percent of the net heat in the raw coal is left in the char and 10 to 23 percent of the potential heat appears in the primary tar. Fixed gases represent approximately 7 percent of the heat and approximately 2 percent is lost or dissipated in the reactions of decomposition. Considering the different ranks of coal in the United States, the yield of tar will vary from about 9 to 44 gallons per ton, therefore it is important that each coal be carefully considered if it is to be carbonized for industrial use.

It has been demonstrated in the laboratory by A. J. Phillips1 that a transformation or conversion from beta directly to alpha may take place in a brass of 61 to 62.5 per cent copper content. The completion of the transformiation is dependent on a rapid rate of cooling from the all-beta field through the alpha + beta range to the alpha field. Phillips states that in a slowly cooled alloy containing 62 per cent copper and 38 per cent zinc the copper content of the beta is progressively decreased from 62 to 56 per cent by precipitation of alpha. Rapid cooling tends to prevent the separation of alpha with a copper content of more than 62 per cent by reducing to a minimum the time required for passing through the alpha + beta range. Upon crossing beyond the (alpha + beta) (alpha) boundary to the all-alpha region below, the material is transformed from beta to alpha. It, is essential that there be no change in composition. Phillips obtained his results by quenching a 62:38 copper-zinc alloy from 850" C. in iced brine at -8" C. No reference to the occurrence of this transformation in a manufacturing process has been found in the literature. An investigation of the microstructures of a number of hot forgings made from leaded brass rods yielded one forging in which this striking conversion from beta to alpha had occurred. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transformation and certain conditions under which it may occur during the hot pressing of brass. The conversion was noted in a shape forged from a leaded brass rod, the composition of which was: Cu, 60.26 per cent; Zn, 37.86; Pb, 1.88. In this study the lead content was disregarded and the alloy was considered to be equivalent to an alloy of 61.40 per cent copper and 35.60 per cent zinc (9812 parts = 100 parts). The possibility that the lead might obstruct or accelerate the precipitation of alpha was not studied. The lead appears as black globules in the photomicrographs and has a negligible solubility in the alloy.

Recent developments in energy conversion, mining and minerals processing, pollution control, and chemical equipment have placed in-creased demands on heat-resistant alloys. Higher corrosion rates from oxidation, hot corrosion, and sulfidation have increased consumption of materials that contain critical and strategic minerals and in many cases have limited productivity. The Bureau of Mines is conducting re-search on substitute materials having greater resistance to high-temperature corrosive atmospheres above 6000 C compared to austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 304, 316, and 310, with the goal of conserving critical metals such as Cr and Ni. The substitute materials are based on Fe-Cr-Ni-Al compositions. Aluminum additions to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys significantly improve high-temperature corrosion resistance, particularly sulfidation resistance. In the alloy, devised by Bureau researchers, aluminum additions are held in the form of a second-phase precipitate, 8NiAl. Minor additions of Ti, Mn, and Si improve workability.

The first industrial applications of roller presses at the comminution were in 1984 in the cement industry. Since then, the equipment has taken more space in the mineral industry. However, many challenges are still present in this equipment, more specifically regarding to ore breakage predictability. The application of this equipment in the pellet feed preparation is fundamental to increase the surface area (blaine index) of the mineral using reduced energy consumption. However, even after several pressing steps, it is still challenging to achieve granulometry in percentages required for the pelletizing process. Currently these levels are reached in wet milling processes, typically carried out in wet ball mills. For the of pellets formation in pelletizing plants, both pelletizing and the firing processes requires finer granulometry. The motivation of this work is to study the pelletizing process, comparing the physical quality of the pellets produced only through comminuted ore in roller press the pellets produced in conventional comminution using circuit with ball mill.

The transition temperatures of 0.01 to 0.02 pct carbon steels are shown to be strongly influenced by cooling rate in the a range, quenching from A, causing a very low transition temperature even after strain aging. In a titanium-stabilized steel and in a steel with 0.05 pct C this effect is absent. NORMAL mild structural steels usually show a structure of more or less pure ferrite, as a matrix, in which cementite grains or pearlite are embedded. Of these components, ferrite is by far the most interesting one as far as ductility and brittle (cleavage) fracture are concerned. Obviously, pear-lite and carbide are by no means necessary for a cleavage crack to nucleate and grow in the ferrite, as steels with a very low carbon content (Armco iron with 0.02 pct C) have an impact transition temperature just as high as semikilled steels with 0.26 pct C.1 Although it has been argued that a very embrittling effect is to be expected from cementite, precipitated as continuous films along the ferrite grain boundaries,'. " the micrographic evidence for a direct causal connection between the brittleness and these films does not seem to be very convincing. On the other hand, it has been stated that cementite particles in ferrite are able to stop ferrite cracks.4,5 In any case, the properties of the ferrite itself seem to be of overwhelming importance to the ductility of steels, justifying a thorough study of steels consisting of ferrite of different compositions, but principally free from pearlite, which means a carbon content below 0.02 pct. Such investigations have been carried out using the impact transition temperature as a criterion of the tendency to brittle fracture and have given some rather unexpected results. One result is the profound influence of carbon on the transition temperature of the steel in normalized condition. If the carbon content is reduced from 0.02 to 0.015 pct and below, a nearly discontinuous decrease in transition temperature appears even with high percentages of such elements as phosphorus and nitrogen present. "Due to limited water resources in mineral processing plants, increasing the efficiency of iron tailing dewatering system in order to obtain more usable water is very important. In this research, flocculation process, as one of the best method for water recovery, was investigated by using one organic cationic and three anionic types of flocculants with different dosages (10, 20, 30 g/ton) and iron ore tailing slurry (8 % w/w solidity) in series of graduated cylinders and obtained results were compared. it is observed that for tailing sample, the anionic flocculants have a significant effect on the settling rate of solid particles compared to the cationic types. Furthermore, effects of temperature (10, 23 and 43 ºC) and pH (2, 7 and 12) on the rate of settlement and turbidity was studied by utilizing the best flocculant. Findings showed that by increasing the amount of flocculant dosage, sedimentation rate went up and turbidity decreased. Comparison the out-put data of tests indicated that at temperature 23 °C and pH=7, the best results for both of faster settling rate and producing more clear water were reached. It should be considered that lower temperature has a more negative effect on the sedimentation rate and overflow water quality. So it will be predicted that for cold seasons, the consumption of the flocculant powder would be higher than the moderate or warm seasons. Also, coagulation/flocculation was evaluated by applying organic cationic coagulant added to anionic flocculant in three different times. Different ratios of coagulant to flocculant was examined (70%:30%, 50%:50%, 30%:70%) as well. Overall, utilizing coagulant had desirable influence on sedimentation experiments and obtaining high quality water. 1- INTRODUCTION In mineral Factories, among the important processes, solid-liquid separation process due to limited resources of water is very important and operates on iron ore tailing in settling tank as thickener in order to gain clear water for preventing water loss and applying again in plant units (Ciftci and Serhat Isik, 2017). Iron ore tailing include inharmonious compounds of iron oxides, silicates and aluminum-silicates. The percentage of solid in the tailing usually changes between 5 and 10 percent (Dash et al., 2011). One of the major problem about dewatering of tailing in thickener is solid-liquid separation of slurries with high stability because of fine particles. It means that rate of sedimentation is very slow and recovered water quality is inappropriate. This issue can be solved to a large extent by factors such as pH control, ionic strength and flocculation/coagulation process which results in aggregation of particles so that settlement by gravity is happened (Dash et al., 2011)."

Herty, Jr.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.—The procedure of the Open-hearth Committee in studying pig iron and its effects in the open hearth has been influenced by the discussions at a number of meetings of the Committee. Those discussions have brought out very clearly that, as far as the pig iron affects the quality, interference with quality should be studied for three definite types of pig iron: (1) low-silicon pig iron; (2) very high-silicon pig iron, and (3) pig iron in which the silicon varies over a wide range in short periods, such as 1 to 3 casts. If a blast furnace is running steadily at 1 per cent. silicon iron, practically no trouble, apparently, can be traced to the pig iron, but if the furnace is running from 0.60 up to 1.50 and then down to 0.60 per cent., trouble in the finished steel is liable to occur, which apparently cannot be corrected by open-hearth practice. The open-hearth discussions have shown fairly definitely that with low-silicon iron, one type of trouble arises on the finished product and with the high-silicon iron, another. Our experience with the high-silicon is that any non-metallic matter that may form, does so when the pig iron is put into the furnace; that is, silicates immediately form which are more liable to be high in silica than would happen with low-silicon iron. I think Mr. Sweetser will agree with mc that if a blast furnace is very irregular, different points in the furnace may be working irregularly, in other words, the temperature gradient all over the furnace is not uniform. We have made many determinations on that point which indicate that a varying blast furnace causes hot spots and cold spots around the periphery. If some of those spots are hot and others are cold, although the analysis of the iron may be constant, then unreduced oxide, going through on one side, and good iron, going through on the other, may mix and the average temperature of the iron is not high enough to get completely rid of the oxides. So our method of attack is directly on that point; it is our first objective. Our procedure is to make a number of consecutive tests at a blast furnace, making a detailed study of the blast-furnace operation. We follow the iron through the open-hearth heat, being sure that we know just how much of each kind of iron gets into the open hearth, and take out specified samples at certain times during the process, working on steel where no finishing additions are made in the furnace. We are following one type of iron through the billet mills and into the finished product and are obtaining complete data on open-hearth operation. Besides the ordinary chemical analyses on the samples of slag and metal, we are running samples of the plg iron, the steel in the open hearth and the finished steel, for oxygen and silicates. We are going to find out whether or not oxygen, as silicates or oxides, has some connection with this trouble. If not, we may be able to locate some other factor. I am inclined to think that the silicates are responsible, judging from the indications in some other work that the Bureau of Mines is doing in Pittsburgh. Essa tecnologia de simulação tem uma ampla aplicação no estudo de processos, o que permite a obtenção do seu conhecimento e domínio operacional. Além disso, possibilita melhores definições nas etapas de projeto, além de realizar uma análise de confiabilidade mais realista. O presente trabalho consiste em realizar uma análise de confiabilidade, através da simulação dinâmica, para entender como as paradas não-programadas influenciam a produção de uma planta de beneficiamento de ferro. Ainda, visa entender o desempenho fenomenológico dos equipamentos de acordo com a entrada de diferentes tipos de minérios e também como são suscetíveis a condições climáticas.

This article presents a customized genetic algorithms (GA) with new crossover and mutation operators to solve the short-term production scheduling problem of multi-mine mineral value chains (MVC). The preceding problem consists of determining the extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively while closely meeting the quality and quantity requirements of the processing units subject to relevant technical and operational constraints. The short-term production scheduling is carried out at shorter scales wherein the operations are modeled in a great detail with large number of constraints. This makes the industry-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. Thus, a GA-based heuristic approach is developed to obtain nearoptimal solutions to the large-scale instances of the problem in a reasonable amount of computational time. Computational experiments show that the developed GA-based method is a promising way to handle industry-scale instances of the problem. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis on various parameter combinations of crossover and mutation operators indicates that the customized global mutation operator, when used in combination with the customized crossover operators, took on average 12.5% less time than the customized local mutation operator to converge to a solution.

In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.
