The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

ALTHOUGH cylindrical grinding mills have long been used, there is wide divergence of opinion as to what constitute best operating conditions. Questions such as mill diameter, diameter-length ratio, revolutions per minute, type and size of grinding media, volume of charge, circulating load, pulp level, pulp consistency, liner design, and size of feed, have all been given serious consideration by competent scientific investigators as well as by operators. While many laboratory and plant tests have been made that would seem to justify certain definite conclusions, there is a dearth of definite data giving actual results obtained when a grinding mill working between fixed limits is operated at its maximum capacity under varying conditions as to ball load, circulating load, speed, etc. In tests conducted recently at the Hollinger, extending over a period of thirteen months, to determine the best operating conditions for a ball-mill 6 ft. 6 in. diameter inside the liners, some very interesting facts have been ascertained. This paper is presented in the desire to make public the results of these tests and not with the idea that the last word has been spoken in regard to grinding. We feel, however, that these facts justify certain definite conclusions and hope that, by the fullest and frankest criticism and discussion, the essentials necessary for the correct design and operation of grinding mills will become better known.

Variable nature of rock and face conditions, varying execution and changing nature of blasting are making ongoing optimization challenging. Intelligent planning and on-going analytics are required to mitigate variability and convert blasting into a predictable outcome by use of technology. Blasting operations generate a huge amount of data which can be used intelligently for optimization. In this paper, details are provided of a system which is used for blasting data collection in the field – Key details around blast parameters, explosives, initiating system details, video, photographs, vibration and fragmentation are collected in a cloud-based platform. Data can also be collected through a mobility device in the field (even without internet connectivity) and synchronized with cloud-based system. Also, data from various sources can be imported in excel formats in the software including from upstream and downstream processes from blasting. App also gives indication about exceeding of vibration, air blast overpressure, fragment size etc. Thus, making it possible to perform QA-QC before charging and deciding initiation timing and sequence at the blasting site. The data can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate strategies at the design and execution stage. Data gathering of blast parameters, explosive used processing and analysis can be used to optimize operational efficiency, improve safety and environmental controls.

Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

Nowadays, the HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) is an intermediate step between filtering and balling in the most modern iron ore pelletizing operation. The operation debottlenecks filtering process and reduces pressure over the typical milling process to control particle size to the balling. The present study evaluated aspects of microwave application to the iron ore concentrate fed to HPGR in a bench scale unit. Iron ore concentrate was irradiated varying the microwave exposure time and grinding efficiency was evaluated. The moisture influence in the HPGR efficiency was also assessed. The pellet feed blaine surface area (BSA) improved by 300 cm2/g and % < 325# fraction by 3%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show the formation of micro-cracks onto the particle surface induced by microwave; the effect observed helped improve the milling process performance, in addition to the moisture reduction observed due to the temperature increase.

In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. A series of equations previously derived for calculating ternary thermodynamic properties using binary data has been applied to the problem of predicting ternary phase diagrams and quaternary excess free energy. The methods are considered to be rigorous for regular ternary and quaternary systerns and empirical for nonregular systems. The equations have been used to predict ternary phase boundaries in the Pb-Sn-Zn system at 926°K and the Ag-Pd-Cu system at 1000ºK. Calculated quaternary excess free-energy values are presented for the Pb-Sn-Cd-Bi system at 773°K. A method for predicting the location of ternary phase boundaries would be a useful supplement to experimental measurements in ternary systems. This has been recognized with the considerable work that has been done to find models to predict or extend thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams in binary and ternary systems1-18 for which direct experimental measurements are limited. With the access to highspeed digital computers and mechanical plotting devices, it is currently rather easy to compare mathematical models with experimental data. The regular-solution model is consistent with systems which exhibit negative heats of mixing, positive heats of mixing, and miscibility gaps, and therefore it is applicable to simple phase diagrams. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of regular-solution equations to predict, empirically, phase equilibria in some types of nonregular ternary systems. Corresponding equations for regular quaternary systems are given and used to calculate empirical quaternary excess free-energy data. METHOD FOR PREDICTING THE LOCATION OF TERNARY PHASE BOUNDARIES USING BINARY DATA Meijerin1,6 has used the regular-solution model to calculate common tangent points to ternary free energy of mixing surfaces and hence to determine phase boundaries in ternary systems involving miscibility gaps. He used the following equation to calculate ternary excess free energy of mixing values: stants characteristic of the binary solutions, and Ni is the mole fraction of component i. An alternate expression which gives for regular solutions as a function of binary values of along composition paths with constant N1/N2, N2lN3, and N1/N3 may also be derived:15 ternary r xs 1 ?c-*n.Ti*.U*. This expression for is more useful for the empirical calculation of ternary excess free-energy values for nonregular systems because actual binary AFXS data may be used in the expression rather than attempting to find suitable constants for Eq. [I]. The results of this feature of Eq. [2] are illustrated in Table I where calculated excess free-energy values for the Ni-Mn-Fe system at 1232°K are compared with experimental data of Smith, Paxton, and McCabe.19 Although regular-solution equations have been shown to give calculated thermodynamic quantities which agree quite well with experiment for single-phase nonregular ternary systems,14,15 care should be exercised in the use of the equations to predict thermo-dynamic properties of multiphase ternary systems in which strong compound formation is suspected. This precaution is consistent with the simple regular-solution model which for negative values of ai_j will indicate a tendency toward compound formation but even for very large negative values of ai-jwill not give multiphase binary or ternary systems involving a distinct stable compound. Hence, calculated ternary free-energy data using Eq. [2] might be expected to vary between being rigorous and poor, in the following order, for ternary systems which are: a) regular solutions, b) nonregular single-phase liquids in which random mixing is nearly realized, c) nonregular single-phase solids, d) nonregular multiphase systems exhibiting miscibility gaps, e) nonregular multiphase systems with binary compounds but no ternary compounds, f) nonregular multiphase systems with highly stable binary and ternary compounds. The calculated data will be expected to be least accurate for the last two cases. The general method adopted in this paper involves two-dimensional plots of ternary activity curves. The principle used is that tie lines indicating two-phase equilibria join conjugate phases a and B for example, for which a1(a) = a1(B), a2(a) = a2(B), and a3(a) = a3(B). Tie lines may be determined by plotting the ternary activities of two components along an isoactivity line for the third component and the unique points where the above equalities hold may be found graphically.

Based on the study of artificial neural network, the neural model was established for the prediction of germanium extraction from zinc oxide dust by microwave alkaline roasting-water leaching. Alkali-material mass ratio, microwave heating temperature, liquid-solid ratio, aging time, leaching time and leaching temperature were the significant factors for the process. The results indicated that the neural network prediction model was reliable, and the forecast values fitted well with the actual experimental values. The model could be used to predict the regeneration experiments with high credibility and practical significance. The accuracy of convergence of the model reached 10−5.

It is concluded that land-based mineral resources will be adequate for most minerals in the immediate future, but in the long term more minerals will come from offshore locations. Because the oceans are international and can transport pollution, international control of offshore workings will be necessary. In the UK and similarly highly developed areas, the working of low-value bulk minerals will create increasing problems in urban development and countryside preservation. Much more information should be published on standards to be adopted and their costs, if emotional social pressures founded on ignorance are to be avoided. The Town and Country Planning Acts have greatly improved the environmental quality in Britain in relation to mineral working. In the long term conservation of some minerals in short supply may be necessary on a national or international basis. Much research is required for the determination of adequate criteria and standards for the preservation of environmental quality in the mineral industry. New local, national and international legislation will be required and the adoption of voluntary standards by trade associations should be encouraged wherever appropriate

Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a &apos;black art&apos;, because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

Highly variable milling properties within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corporation in Nevada made it necessary to estimate the copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. The estimation was made by first determining the relationships between the desired metallurgical properties and the ore&apos;s petrology (i.e. copper mineral type, rock type and copper grade). This relationship was then combined with the already estimated rock type, mineral type and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict the milling properties.

The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to recover chromium chemicals from low-grade domestic chromites, which contain silicon and aluminum impurity levels that are too high to permit processing by present industrial processes. The Bureau procedure consists of reacting chromite with molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) under oxidizing conditions to form sodium chromate (Na2Cr04). The reaction product is leached with methanol to remove the majority of the unreacted sodium hydroxide, then with water to remove the sodium chromate and the remainder of the sodium hydroxide. The sodium chromate product is recovered by evaporative crystallization from the aqueous solution. This report presents results of laboratory tests to determine the optimum fusion conditions and the chromium extractions obtained from several domestic chrotdte concentrates. These concentrates are from a variety of sources, including the Stillwater Complex in Montana, Kanuti River-Caribou Mountain, Red Bluff Bay, Kenai Peninsula, and Kodiak Island areas in Alaska, deposits in northern California, and a nickel-cobalt laterite from southern Oregon. All of these concentrates were successfully treated by the Bureau procedure. The best chromium extrac-tions obtained for each of these materials ranged from 69.5 to 98.9 pet.

INTRODUCTION The accurate sampling of coal, as with most minerals, is a difficult task. Coal is a heterogeneous material made up of different types of coal and varying amounts of mineral matter. The product as mined may contain all the layers of coal and impurities found in the seam as well as portions of the stratas above and below the coal seam. The preparation plant is the device to size, crush, and/or remove impurities so the coal may be shipped as a salable product. Sampling may be needed at many stages in the preparation process. Although this chapter is primarily concerned with sampling in connection with preparation processes, the principles apply to all coal sampling. The main reasons for sampling in connection with coal preparation are: 1) To determine the washability characteristics of the raw coal by means of float and sink tests. These may be used for the design of a preparation plant, prediction of results to be obtained, or monitoring raw coal delivered to the plant. 2) To check the performance of various operating units in the plant, either by float. and sink tests or chemical analyses. 3) To determine the analytical characteristics of the products produced, such as moisture, ash, Btu, sulfur, etc. HISTORY The earliest accepted methods of sampling coal in the United States were given in US Bureau of Mines (USBM) publications by J. A. Holmes,l G. S. Pope,2 and A. C. Fieldner.3 The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) more or less adopted the methods proposed by USBM in their Standard D-21-1916 and it remained a standard for many years. Briefly, this standard called for a 500 lb (227 kg) sample for coals less than 94 in. (19 mm) in size and a 1000 lb (454 kg) sample for all coals over 94 in. (19 mm) in size. The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

A elipsometria é uma técnica poderosa capaz não somente de medir espessura de variados filmes finos, mas também caracterizar propriedades ópticas e elétricas dos mesmos. Foram testados vários procedimentos para acessar o substrato da folha-de-flandres e vários modelos que reproduzissem as características elipsométricas medidas. Escolheu-se então melhor procedimento adequado para acessar as características do substrato e o melhor modelo para caracterização elipsométrica do filme fino de óleo.

Hot Blast Stove Systems are an important equipment of a Blast Furnace plant. During the last years, performance requirements and operation practice for the Hot Blast Systems have changed and have a big influence on the Blast Furnace operation. Therefore it is necessary to keep the Hot Blast System in proper condition in order to maintain the production capacity of the Blast Furnace. It is important for operators to know the condition and relevant constrains of a Hot Blast Stove Plant. Assessing its condition on a regular basis, especially in advance of a Blast Furnace relining is therefore advisable. Considering the individual condition of the Hot Blast Stove Plant, improvements in operation, but also specific and dedicated repairs might be implemented. Design improvements can be implemented as well during such repairs. This paper will describe some of these design improvements, will illustrate their implementation in new hot blast stoves but will also describe repair methods for existing stoves. In addition new developments became popular during the last decade, like the so called Dome Combustion Stoves, which was invented already 30 years ago in Western Europe. Paul Wurth’s development in this regard will be discussed in this paper as well.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

Major William R. Grunow, in a brief account off his military services, says: "I take pleasure in informing you that since my return from France I have been stationed at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., and am now on duty as a Senior Instructor at the Engineer Officers&apos; Training School. While in France, I served as a company commander in the 305th Engineers and was later ordered to return to the United States for assignment to new troops. Upon arrival in the United States, I received my majority." P. F. Rodegerdts gives us the following account of his military service: "I enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps in San Francisco on Feb. 12, 1918. On February 10, I was ordered to Cambridge, Mass., where I was enrolled for the course in technical aircraft construction given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After successfully completing the course of instruction, I spent six weeks in practical construction of seaplanes at the Curtiss aeroplane factory in Buffalo.
