Damage prediction during multi-seam mining is an essential precursor to optimizing mine design. Ground control problems associated with interaction are influenced by both fixed geological and site conditions as well as mining variables which may be controlled to varying degrees. To quantify interaction effects across an affected seam a hazard map approach was selected, which allows interaction data to be presented in a form that can facilitate future planning. Study mines were analyzed using boreholes as sources of geological and spatial data, together with information from mine maps which gives the extent of mining activity. To demonstrate the method the safety factor against interactively caused shear failure in the lower seam roof was computed. Input data included depth of cover, inner burden thickness, remnant pillar size, extraction ratio, immediate roof type, seam thickness, percent sand-stone, and rock strength values. These safety factors were then contoured to produce a hazard map. An assumption was made to assign a high safety factor at the outcrop line to permit realistic contouring of the safety factors. The software also allowed mine workings to be drawn onto the map to facilitate interpretation of the overall results. Hazard analysis permits delineation of unsuitable mining areas within a seam. The application of the method for refining mine design and improving reserve recovery is verified using case studies.

Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.

One gravimeter is described using a beam whose moment about a pivotal axis is elastically balanced. Magnetic or electric fields are deemed unsatisfactory for balancing gravitational force because they cannot easily be kept constant. The gravimeter described is capable of detecting a change in altitude of 3 inches and a change in latitude of about 150 feet. V. S.

Raglan mine is a copper-nickel mining operation, part of Glencore, and located at the northern border of the province of Quebec, in Canada. The concentrator is fed by a mix of four different underground mines, thus it must accommodate periodic variations in run-of-mine mineralisation and composition. In order to concentrate nickel and copper sulphides, the flotation circuit also includes a regrind step at the cleaner stage. This leads to challenges in maintaining optimal recoveries and in diagnosing potential disturbances. This paper advocates for the combination of automated mineralogical analyses, reconciliated mass balances from diagnostic sampling campaigns and innovative multidimensional visualisation to assist in tackling these challenges. Through this approach, it has been possible to quantify the regrind step influence on the liberation of valuable mineral particles in the final flotation concentrate. The methodology also allows for virtual sieving of the products in order to track unit loss in the flotation process. The proposed analysis scheme presents an opportunity to easily diagnose flotation circuit performance based on mineralogical information. Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.

a Uranium was deformed by cold rolling, and the effects of this plustic deformation on the microstruc-ture of the metal were observed by the technique of transmission elecbon microscopy. The recrystalli-zation of selected cold-wmked samples was also studied by this method. The samples were prepared for examination by electrolytic thinning in a standard metallographic electrolyte which has not been previously reported as being used in producing thin foils of uranium. The microstructural changes observed in the a uranium were generally similar to those seen by optical microscopy. The changes in the microstructure of a uranium following cold work and recrystallization treatments have been the subjects of several studies employing optical and X-ray techniques.12-19 These studies indicated that twinning was the redominant mode of deformation at room temperature20 and that the regions of high energy associated with the deformation twins were preferred sites for the initiation of recrystallization.15,18, Recently several workers have prepared thin foils of uranium suitable for examination by transmission electron microscopy.'-lo The foils thus prepared have been used to study fission fragment damage; a particular dislocation reaction,' and gas precipitation." At this laboratory the microstructural changes occurring during the cold working and recrystallizing of a uranium samples have been studied by using transmission electron-microscopy techniques. The foils used in this work were electrolytically thinned in a polishing bath not reported previously in the literature as being used for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uranium used in this investigation was depleted a uranium sheet 4 mils thick. The results of a spectrochemical analysis of this material are shown in Table I. The as-received uranium was cut into strips, 1 in. wide by 5 in. long, and annealed in vacuo at 600°C for 2-1/2 hr. The resulting microstructure consisted of relatively uniform, equiaxed grains having diameters of 10 to 50 p. Cold Working. The cold-worked samples were prepared by rolling several of the annealed uranium strips to various thicknesses. The strips were reduced 3.5 ± 0.5, 6.0 ± 0.6, 10.0 ± 0.5, 19.5 ± 1.0, and 28.5 ± 2.0 pct in thickness. It was not possible to achieve these reductions with a single pass through the rolling mill, so the strips were turned end for end during the rolling procedure. The cold-rolled strips were stored in dry ice until samples from them could be thinned and examined (within 24 hr after rolling). Annealing. The samples used in studying the re-crystallization behavior of a uranium were obtained by annealing sections of the strips which had been reduced 10.0 and 28.5 pct. These samples were sealed in evacuated Pyrex capsules and were annealed in a tube furnace at temperatures from 200" to 600°C and for times from 1/2 to 2 hr, see Table l. Thinning: The samples from the rolling and heat treatments were prepared for examination in the electron microscope by electropolishing in a bath composed of 25 g chromic acid, 133 ml glacial acetic acid, and 25 ml water. This electrolyte has been used and recommended for preparing specimens for optical metallography It was necessary to mask the edges of the sample with a stop-off paint in order to prevent preferential attack in these areas. The paint used was made by dissolving polystyrene in benzene. The electrolytic cell consisted of a cylindrical stainless-steel cathode placed in a beaker containing the electrolyte, with the sample as the anode positioned at the cell axis. History of Development The hydrocyclone, probably because of its basic simplicity, has been used for various classification applications since before 1890. A patent was granted in the United States in 1891 to Bretney on a device for separating sand from water, collecting the sand in a closed chamber for intermittent discharge, practically identical to some present-day water desanding cyclones. Between 1900 and 1937 there were 30 or more additional patents issued on liquid cyclone configurations or their use. About 1937 liquid cyclones began to be used commercially in the treatment of cellulose fiber in the pulp and paper industry separating contaminating particles from the fiber in water suspension used for making high grade paper products. Nichols Engineering & Research Corp. of New York was marketing a liquid cyclone for cleaning sand and din particles from fiber suspensions in the pulp and paper industry by 1937. The designs during this period were such that the cyclones discharged a small amount of relatively high density material into a chamber connected to the cyclone apex which in turn discharged the collected dirt material intermittently. By the early 1940s hydrocyclones as we know them today began to appear both in the pulp and paper industry and in coal prorzssing.18 Considerable experimental work was done on small, mostly 3-in.- diam, cyclones operating at relatively high pressure drops, in the range of 50 psi, to remove very small contaminating particles from cellulose fiber in the production of high-grade writing papers in the paper industry.18

Qualitative risk assessment methods are not well suited to considering complex systems and potential interactions of new technology. As part of supporting tier one mining organisations and international industry groups, the author and colleagues have innovated processes to help provide better solutions to sites/companies considering a move to implementing proximity detection and collision avoidance systems. The process identifies required operating states for the system. By applying a combination of research and team-based analyses, a rigorous identification of credible failure modes which could cause these states to be lost, is identified. Finally, required business inputs, expressed in practical terms are distilled from regulator, industry, organisation and site in a way which clearly addresses the failure modes and so retain the required operating states. These business inputs identify improvements for site arrangements (EMESRT levels 1 to 7) before identifying functional requirements for technological collision avoidance solutions (levels 8 for advisory and 9 for autonomous). The paper presents a case study synthesised from multiple sites analyses and will provide guidance on where to find additional resources to assist in making the best possible transition to better equipment and road network solutions.

Upon approval from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), Turner/Martin Harris, A Joint Venture began construction on the estimated $860 million expansion for the Las Vegas Convention Center District Plan. Totaling around 600 shafts (60 feet depth and 3-foot diameter), the foundation installation completed via uncased drilled shaft operation, spanned from October to December of 2018. During this installation, flowback water from the water table was encountered that contained various solids ranging from cobbles to clays to silts, as well as trace amounts of contaminants of concern (COCs) left behind as a result of previous business that used to occupy the same real estate as the current expansion; more specifically, Perchloroethylene (PCE), an organic chemical widely used as a solvent and degreaser. With over 2.5 million gallons of waste slurry to be treated, technologies were deployed to reclassify the waste from liquid to solid waste as well as recover and treat the water for reuse in land spraying applications. Utilizing these technologies, it is estimated that 1.2 million gallons of water was able to be reclaimed along with over 6,400 tons of solids; resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost and environmental savings. PROJECT OVERVIEW Amidst its famous attractions from gambling to world class entertainment, Las Vegas has long been highlighted as the “No. 1 trade show destination in North America for 24 consecutive years” (LVCVA, 2018). Each year, Las Vegas hosts approximately 22,000 meetings, conventions and trade shows, which support an estimated 65,000 jobs paying $2.7 billion in wages and salaries. In 2017, the Las Vegas Convention Center hosted 21 percent of convention attendees traveling to southern Nevada, which supported approximately 13,800 jobs, paying more than $576 million in wages and salaries. Including indirect and induced impacts, the Las Vegas Convention Center’s attendees generated $2.1 billion in economic impact for the local economy (LVCVA, 2018) . This substantial economic impact of course due in part to the attractions Las Vegas offers to its trade show attendees, along with Las Vegas’ easy accessibility to major metropolises along the West Coast and reasonable travel prices offered if coming in from the East, allows for a very attractive venue. And while being a famous destination is great for business, the city wants to further distinguish itself by offering the best venue as well. For this reason, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) approved a three-phase expansion plan for the Las Vegas Convention Center District totaling well over a billion dollars, slated for completion by 2023.

A research project was conducted at the University of British Columbia (UBC) resulting in the development and evaluation of a novel comminution circuit incorporating autogenous grinding and parallel trains of cone crushers and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). A primary driver for the circuit was to treat ore from deposits with clay and variable hardness. This paper summarizes the unique pilot-plant test program that was developed as a basis for experimental simulation and lists the main findings of the research, including the circuit?s potential operational cost savings compared to a conventional SAG circuit.

SMS Group (SMSG) has always been concerned about safety aspects of electric smelter plants for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. The awareness for safety increased significantly over the past decades and also SMSG contributed with its design features to a safer operation. Today, safety aspects are not only part of the smelter design but also of the overall plant layout. Explosions in electric smelters are rare, but have a huge impact on peoples’ lives, on equipment and on production. For this reason, SMSG wanted to have a better overview of explosions within the smelting industry in order to see if useful statistics could be extracted. Generally, there is a lack of statistics regarding explosions in the electric smelting industry, and not enough information is collected or published. A significant portion of the explosions seems to be water related. Many companies, both operating and engineering, are trying to handle the risks of water, and apply methods to detect water leakages. Installing such a system is a management decision and management has then to make sure the system is properly implemented. The disadvantages and limitations of these systems should be carefully considered and communicated to operators and authorities.

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

The United States contains one of the world's largest reserves of uranium. Domestic production and exploration activities, however, have declined since the early 1980s due to weaker-than-expected growth in nuclear power demand and to foreign competition. The main result has been that more costly and less productive conventional mines and mills have closed. Meanwhile, industry productivity as measured by uranium output per employee has increased threefold since 1980. At the end of 1992, only six plants, all nonconventional, were operating in the United States. Due to cost considerations and increased environmental awareness, any additions to existing capacity are expected to be met through nonconventional in situ leach plants.

"RELIABILITY & SAFETY – TOGETHER. REALLY? I was starkly reminded of the challenges facing by the coal industry while talking with a number of senior mining executives. One said to me: “Safety is the #1 priority in our organization but of course, dollars are very, very important!!!” A coal mine worker at the Bluefield Coal Show claimed: “We know our equipment is bleeding hydraulic fluid all over the place but all that matters is getting the coal out”. We all understand. We want our people to go home safely at the end of the day but the coal industry is bleeding – fluids, dollars and real blood. An issue getting plenty of buzz these days is equipment reliability – in mining too! Achieving an optimal return from the massive investments in equipment is a critical requirement for success within a capital intensive industry like coal mining. You can cut costs by scrimping on maintenance, scavenging used parts and downsizing. Or, you can save money by being smarter with your asset management processes. Can we afford to spend money on both safety and reliability? Is one more important than the other? Many leading edge companies from a variety of industries will tell you that you can’t just cost-cut your way to profitability - or even survival. You need to systematically improve the effectiveness of your business. Do reliability and safety both have a place in improving the performance of the coal industry? According to Ron Moore, of The RM Group, the answer is emphatically YES! Ron says: “If you believe in safety, then you MUST believe in reliability and, more importantly, have the appropriate policies, systems, practices and measures in place. If you want lower costs, you must get your processes right. Simple cost cutting will remove resources from your system without changing the underlying system design, and performance will likely deteriorate.” Figure 1 shows the 5+ year results of a large manufacturing company. When plants are running well (high Asset Utilization), then injuries are less likely. Figure 2 plots data from a number of manufacturing plants. If you want sustainably lower costs get your reliability processes right. But these are manufacturing companies, not coal mining operations! It doesn’t matter. The fundamentals still apply. Mining industry thought leaders tell us that manufacturing is 20-30 years ahead of us and we need to learn from them – and do so quickly. Leading companies, no matter the industry, think in terms of operational excellence. They see this as the meshing of people, process and technology to achieve optimal results. Safety and reliability go hand-in-hand. People and equipment are different – but only to the extent that each requires its own relevant, but related, policies, practices, systems and metrics to achieve effective performance."

"In traditional Permanent Magnet Machines, such as electric motors and generators, power is transmitted by magnetic flux passing through an air gap, which has a very low magnetic permeability, limiting performance. However, reducing the air gap through traditional means carries risks in manufacturing, with tight tolerances and associated costs, and reliability, with thermal and dynamic effects requiring adequate clearance. Using a magnetically permeable, high thermal conductivity material has the potential to improve magnetic performance, while at the same time offering performance advantages in heat transfer.Ferrofluids can be used to improve permeability in the rotor I stator gap. However, there are several tradeoffs in this approach. Fluid immersion comes with an increase in fluid friction loss compared to the windage losses of a traditional system. Isolating the rotating components from the ferrofluid can offset this effect. Also, while the magnetic effect can be positive for gap permeability, leakage flux can increase, and saturation can limit gains. These effects must be taken into account for a system optimized for ferrofluid immersion.IntroductionPermanent Magnet Machines (PMM's) convert electrical energy to mechanical energy in motor applications, or, for generator applications, convert mechanical energy to electrical energy through means of passing alternately polarized magnets past electrical coils. Looking at a simplified version of a PMM, where Rx is magnetic reluctance and <l>x is magnetic flux, we have the circuit shown in Figure 1."

extremely powerful tools for building predictive and generative models. ML can be used for building highly accurate regression and classification models. But without careful data science and statistical analysis, a regression or classification model could be highly biased and completely wrong – and we may not even realise. An example rock density estimation task will be used to illustrate the potential gains and possible pitfalls in using ML and AI in Mineral Resource estimation. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing! For most simple regression or classification problems, very little. For density estimation, using the global mean may be all that is possible, but the resource classification would need to reflect the uncertainty in global estimation of tonnage. Everything! From data collection and measurement, from selecting ML and AI techniques and designing the analysis workflow to our own cognitive bias. The things that could go wrong are vast and may include but not limited to asking the wrong question, not asking questions, data bias, measurement errors, insufficient data coverage, not collecting the right variables, not collecting enough observations, collecting clustered samples, unbalanced data, filtering out data without reason (outliers), clipping data (outliers), relying on automatic feature selection, including irrelevant variables, excluding relevant variables, geological interpretation, changing context, blindly following best practice, splitting small data sets, subsetting large data sets, using the wrong tool for the task, insufficient budget to complete the analysis, not allowing enough time for testing and experimentation (the science), focusing too much on building the model (the engineering), not learning from the data, our assumptions, our preconceptions, and our skill. This paper will explore the question of how training regression models to predict rock density are affected by gaps in the data (missing observations and missing variables). What could possibly go wrong?

The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.
