"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers, has made a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data regarding the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists principally of screen-sizing and float-and-sink data on the Clark and Gholson beds at Boothton, Ala. A previous washability study 4/ has been made on the Clark bed at Marvel, Ala.SAMPLING AT MINESThe coal from the Gholson and the Clark beds was sampled at the tipple which receives the output,the Boothten No. 3 and No. 4 mines. These two mines are on the Gholson and Clark beds, respectively, but the coal. from both mines is mixed on the tipple and washed in the same washery. The samples taken were minus 4-inch raw coal. The plus 4-inch raw coal is hand¬picked and not washed. AS the 4-inch screen had a capacity in excess of the output of the mines, it was stopped at the end of each mine-car trip. By Observing from which mine incline each trip was hoisted, a separate sample from each bed was cut from the discharge stream of an endless belt which conveys the through 4-inch raw coal to the bin ahead of the washer. The output from each bed was sampled uniformly over the period of a working shift. The two washability samples weighed approximately 3,000 pounds each."

The Bureau of Mines investigated two areas of oil and gas seeps in the north-central Gulf of Alaska--Katalla River to Bering River and Cape Yakataga to Yakutat Bay to determine (1) whether previously reported seeps are still active, (2) the characteristics of the seeping hydrocarbons, and (3) the amount of bitumen contained in the drainage leaving the seeps and entering the Gulf of Alaska. Thirteen separate oil seeps, six bitumen deposits, and eight gas seeps were located, sampled, and analyzed. The oils ranged from 35.2° to 14.1° API gravity and had sulfur contents from 0.53 to 1.31 wt-pct. Bitumen samples had API gravities from 2.4° to 14.6° and sulfur contents from 0.28 to 0.88 wt-pct. Gas samples had specific gravities ranging from 0.577 to 0.883 and caloric values from 724 to 1,427 Btu/cu ft. A total of 63 water samples obtained from seep locations and seep drainages were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for ionic content and by solvent extraction for hydrocarbon content. Although some of the water at the oil seeps had a bitumen content as high as 246,000 mg/1, the amount of hydrocarbons actually reaching the Gulf of Alaska averaged <0.2 mg/1.

Much concern has been expressed recently as to whether water supplies will be sufficient to support accelerated energy development foreseen in operation Independence. Taking the Nation as a whole, sufficient water is available for energy growth, but locally, as in arid parts of the Colorado Basin, limited water supplies will dictate economies in water use and affect plant siting. As Young and Thompson1 point out with respect to electric power generation, the term "water requirements" is misleading, as demand for water for cooling is sensitive to price of water and thus is quite flexible rather than the inflexible or fixed level implied by the word "requirement." Much the same is true of other energy conversion systems. Water is used in many aspects of energy production including mining and reclamation of mined lands, on-site processing, transportation, refining, and conversion to other forms of energy. In the East, South, Midwest, and along the seacoasts, water supplies are generally adequate for energy industries; most water problems in those regions relate to pollution rather than supply. West of about the 100th meridian, however, runoff is generally less than potential diversions and energy industries must compete with alternative uses for the limited available water supplies. Water is especially short in areas of less than 10 inches mean annual rainfall where natural precipitation generally is insufficient for establishing vegetation without irrigation. Extraction. The principal categories of extraction comprise coal mining, oil and gas production, uranium mining, and oil shale mining.

Discussions are presented of the three phases of the noise reduction program on flight-type coal conveyors. The three phases are identification of noise sources, evaluation of potential noise reduction concepts, and implementation of noise reduction which is intended to reduce conveyor noise to less than 90 dB(A) in the underground mining environment. The major noise sources are impacts of the chain on the tail roller and on the top and bottom decks. A total noise reduction of 11 dB(A) was achieved by using techniques which are applicable to retrofit. These are a vibration isolated tail roller and an isolated wear strip on the return deck. A theoretical model of isolation provided by the isolated tail roller is developed. Appendices are presented which contain information on other potential concepts and additional data generated.

Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

"THE copper smelting operation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, generates a gas flow of 350,000 c.f.m. at n.t.p. This gas stream passes to atmosphere through a 20-foot diameter by 250-foot brick stack, carrying with it an appreciable dust burden in the form of metallic oxide fumes. The flow constituents during the period 1952 and 1953 and •before gas filtration was included in the treatment scheme are shown in Table I. This paper describes the gas filtration treatment which was installed in 1957, using glass cloth media to recover this dust burden, and discusses the associated problem as its treatment for recovery of zinc and cadmium.The metallurgical details associated with the problem are illustrated by a description of the material flow sequence of the Company's hydrometallurgical zinc plant and copper smelter. In this ore processing complex, the zinc plant and copper smelter form an integrated unit within which intermediate zincrich products of each operation enter the treatment circuit of the other."

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. THE installation of the gas-producer power-plant in America has been so unusual that all engineers have viewed it with in¬terest; a large majority, however, regard it with a lack of con-fidence and many with positive distrust. Despite the fact that European engineers have usually been less inclined to take the initiative along experimental lines than are Americans, they have, nevertheless, developed the gas-producer plant to a very high state of efficiency to which they were forced by the neces¬sity of economy in fuel-consumption. The gas-producer power-plant is so common in Europe that engineers as well as the general public regard it with the same degree of confidence that is now universally placed in steam¬plants. Gas-engines, both small and large, are in general use there, and central stations, aggregating several thousand horse¬power, are quite numerous. As the nickel sulfide ore deposits become decreasingly viable as a source of nickel metal, increasing attention is being paid to the exploitation of the nickeliferous laterite ores. Attempts to produce a high grade ferronickel concentrate from these ores by pyrometallurgical methods face several challenges, in particular the selective recovery of the highly disseminated nickel from the reduced ore. The current work explores strategies for maximizing the size of ferronickel particles formed in order to improve the selective recovery of the ferronickel by magnetic separation. The effect of various coal, elemental sulphur, pyrite and sodium sulphate additions on ferronickel particle formation and size at 1000°C have been investigated. It has been observed that increased coal additions leads to a moderate improvement in the size of the ferronickel particles, while the presence of any sulphur bearing reagent leads to a significant increase in particle size. The retention of sulphur in the reduced material has also been studied, showing sodium sulphate has the highest retention, followed by pyrite and then elemental sulphur. An inverse trend was observed in the efficiency of sulphur retention on the basis of residual mass of sulphur per unit mass of reagent added.

Discussion of the paper of CHARLES COLCOCK JONES, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1887 to 1898. D. A. LYON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-For some years I have been interested in the iron-ore deposits of the Pacific Coast, and I feel very much indebted to Mr. Jones for the information he has given us on this subject. I think that we are also very much indebted to him for having presented this paper, as he has given us reliable data in shape of facts and figures, which is just what we need in considering whether or not it would be commercially feasible to attempt to establish an iron and steel industry on the Pacific Coast. Personally, due to lack of market, I do not think it is a commercially feasible proposition at the present time. Mr. Jones states that pig iron can be produced on this coast as cheaply as it can be produced in Pittsburgh. Even. so, what can be done, with it after it is produced? To begin with, iron produced on the. Pacific Coast has to compete with iron produced in China. Last year I had occasion to investigate the subject of the market for iron and, steel on the Pacific slope, and found that it was possible for the producers of Chinese iron to sell it for much less than the price for which iron can be produced in the West, and also for less than eastern pig iron is now sold for, even when shipped through the Panama Canal. I was informed that the agents for Chinese iron had instructions to sell it for $1 or $2 less per ton than that asked for other irons on the market. Of course, I realize that the competition of Chinese iron may not be important, but even if it is not, and even though pig iron ,can be produced at the cost given by Mr. Jones in his paper, I do not see any immediate chance of its being so produced, due to lack of market. C. C. JONES, Los Angeles, Cal.-Mr. Lyon is right. It is a fact that Chinese pig is being sold in San Francisco on some large contracts at $18.50 a ton, while $19 is the usual price. We ought to produce iron. on this coast at $14. Personally I do not think Chinese iron is ever going to be an important factor. It is a bugbear out here now. You are not going to have much Chinese pig iron in .this country. Our little friend Japan is going to absorb everything it can. The price of Chinese pig iron at $18 is about as low as it will ever get. If we can show you that we can produce this iron here at the same price as at Pittsburgh, I. think you will have a good opportunity to compete with anything China or India can ever do. Costs there are very low now. They are going to come up by leaps and bounds in the next few years. The labor cost over there may be very low now, but I. have seen some men from there quite recently

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Orebodies constitute naturally occurring, commonly highly variable concentrations of minerals in the earth’s crust formed through varying and highly unpredictable processes. Orebody knowledge is a core foundation of a mining company’s asset base underpinning all decisions about Mineral Resource and Ore Reserves, future production, development and ultimately the profitability and competitiveness of a mining enterprise. The decision to invest in a mineral project is usually based upon a techno-economic evaluation of the project and having clear approval pathways to gain local community support and address social and environmental impacts. The main objective of the techno-economic evaluation is to determine the optimum development sequence for the particular orebody in question and to estimate the economic viability of the project and the future return on investment to its stakeholders, balancing the inherent value of the mineral in the ground against the costs of development and market pricing. With the exception of market-driven commodity prices, virtually all revenue and cost estimates fundamentally stem from the understanding and subsequent modelling of the orebody. A reliable estimate of the ore deposit grade and other geological value-drivers is the foundation upon which the business case for future mine development and operation is intricately dependent. Orebody knowledge is, therefore, the fundamental driver of the mineral project cycle, influencing the progression of studies and consequently, the resource company’s ability to declare Exploration Results, Mineral Resources or Ore Reserves which govern the source and cost of funding available to the project. Drilling provides a ‘vector’ to the true nature of the orebody and effectively buys time to manage the technical risk associated with the orebody. Despite its perceived high cost, in both time and money terms, drilling is the only available technology for acquiring the necessary orebody knowledge to support technical and economic studies and to minimise orebody-driven cash flow uncertainty and volatility. However, like all costs, pressure to minimise drilling budgets is ubiquitous across the minerals industry. Paired with inappropriate key performance indicators, drilling is often regarded as a cost to be minimised, rather than an investment to be optimised. Furthermore, as future deposits get deeper and more complex, the collection of orebody knowledge is increasingly on the critical path for project development. The increasing cost of data collection pertaining to these deposits increases the temptation to minimise orebody knowledge gathering at the cost of long-term value as the reduction or postponement of drilling results in greater orebody knowledge risk at all stages of the value chain. Indeed the true cost of the decision to drill less is rarely known until the mine is in operation, well after the mine project evaluation team has moved on. This paper aims to promote orebody knowledge as the fundamental source of endogenous project financial risk and, consequently, its critical importance in project financial evaluation. Furthermore, the report documents experimental research into the development of an econometric model for valuing orebody knowledge. Using the density of drilling data as a proxy measure of orebody knowledge, the proposed approach integrates well-established stochastic grade modelling techniques with the mathematical mechanics of Decoupled Net Present Value (DNPV) which, combined with stochastic grade modelling (conditional simulation), lends itself to the financial International Mining Geology Conference 2022 | Brisbane, Australia and Online | 22–23 March 2022 3 assessment of orebody knowledge risk. To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Iron Road Limited (Iron Road) is currently evaluating the feasibility of producing 21.5 Mt/a of high-grade (&gt;66 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 3.7 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate can be produced via a conventional grind and low-intensity magnetic separation flow sheet. Due to the comparatively coarse magnetite liberation size (106 &#181;m), consideration was given to enhancing both the grind economics and coarser product sizing via gravity separation.This paper outlines the test work, flow sheet design and engineering design of a gravity beneficiation circuit (GBC) conducted by Mineral Technologies for Iron Road. The resulting circuit optimisation necessitated mass balance simulation by Iron Road’s SysCAD model to quantify the resulting changes in mill recirculation load. This included the determination of project-critical grinding power and energy requirements with and without the GBC installed into the primary ball mill classification circuit. The outcome of this work was the design of a GBC, including spirals and up-current classification, which led to a substantial reduction (33 per cent) in ball mill recirculating load and power requirements, together with a favourable coarsening of final product size due to the relatively coarser gravity concentrate. This has led to a significant reduction in project design capital and operating costs. A further benefit of this approach is increased recovery of (paramagnetic) hematite and lesser titano-hematite via gravity separation compared to an all-magnetic separation approach.CITATION:Hunt, A G, Showers, G J and Botman, P, 2015. Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

"Bacteria that grow in autochtonous communities of gold heap leaching (HL) wastes are adapted to high concentrations of contaminants and environmental conditions. An example of a mine in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic showed that the bacterial factor had a significant influence on cyanide breakdown and copper and nickel removal in the conditions of HL ore pile zoning compared to chemical oxidation. The diversity of bacterial communities growing in natural and simulated conditions of a HL ore pile was determined for the purpose of the study. The identified bacterial communities included genus Achromobacter and Serratia, which were found to be adapted to a wide range of temperature and can be considered as potential microorganisms for detoxification of gold HL wastes. INTRODUCTION Technologies and systems of passive treatment are of a special interest in relation to solving environmental problems of gold HL wastes detoxification, when neutralization time is not considered as a limitation (Alvarez et al. 2005). Passive treatment methods are based on reagentless spontaneous breakdown of cyanide caused by natural factors, including activity of autochthonous bacterial communities. Implementation of a reagentless biodetoxification technology for mature HL operations provides reduction of environmental impact on industrial site locations and substantial economic benefits compared to conventional chemical processes of neutralization that prevail in the Russian Federation territory. Passive treatment of cyanide-containing wastes was investigated by M. Botz, T. Mudder, S.V. Petrov, L. Simovic, A. Smith, C.A. Young etc. However, the bacterial factor (autochtonous bacterial communities) role in this process is practically unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study included the investigation of a bacterial factor influence on passive treatment of gold HL wastes and the identification of functional groups of bacteria involved in passive treatment."

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.
