Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.

Fine-sized mineral wastes discarded by ore milling plants require stabilization to prevent air and water pollution. Methods devised for achieving this stabilization include physical, chemical vegetative, and combination procedures. Although vegetative reclamation is preferred to physical and chemical stabilization, it is difficult to achieve because the wastes are sterile, contain deleterious inorganic salts, and lack the essential nutrients and physical characteristics required for sustaining vegetative growth. Nevertheless, recent research has developed methods for producing vegetative growth on all but excessively acidic, basic, or saline tailings at costs ranging from $100 to $650 per acre. This report summarizes effective procedures developed for vegetating average tailings, the cost differential between the various methods, and suggests procedures that may be applicable for achieving stabilization of pyrite-containing wastes that may oxidize and become excessively acidic. The use of buried layers of sewage sludge to prevent this acidification is discussed.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. The real and apparent dependence of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of gold on crystallo-graphic orientation has been investigated by isolated scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving experiments. No systematic variation of Ds with orientation was found along the [100] zone. In view of the experimental scatter in these results, however, only aniso-tropy ratios, p, greater than -1.3 would be detectable. Anomalously low values of Ds were found on the [0ll] and [110] zones when the diffusion direction lies along (the scratch or grain boundary groove is perpendicular to) these zones. By comparing these results with a previous y plot study of gold, it is hypothesized that this is not an intrinsic diffusivity effect, but rather it results from a decreased driving force for mass transfer at orientations where the y-plot curvature is negative and appreciable in magnitude relative to y. The characteristics of this type of anisotropy do not appear sEVERAL investigations1-7 have dealt with the anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of metals as measured by the decay of single or multiple to be in agreement with the hypothesis of fast diffusion along ledges in the surface structure. In certain cases the Fourier method of determining Ds, described in Paper I of this series9 was compared with the second moment analysis in order to determine whether or not the method of analysis affects the anisotropy ratio. While the type of analysis does influence the magnitude of the anisotropy ratio, this effect is not associated with the shape of the profile, but rather is connected with the iterative volume diffusion correction used in conjunction with the second moment analysis. It is further demonstrated that the volume diffusion correction can be too large by either method when the y-plot curvature effect is large. Certain orientations exhibit an unusual temperature dependence of Ds ; this is discussed in terms of the y-plot curvature effect and/or the influence of impurities on Ds . scratches in the surface. Depending on the system investigated, both large1"3'6'7 and small4'5 anisotropies in Ds have been found. A series of correlating charts have been prepared to enable the field engineer to predict the amount of stock tank fluid produced by stabilization of first stage separator fluid. The charts shown are particularly convenient for estimating the relative effect of temperature and pressure in economic studies. Further work is planned to investigate the factors affecting stage separation' yo supplement this preliminary work. The direct correlation of separation variables is dictated as a convenience to eliminate the trial and error calculation necessary when using the standard flash vaporization equations. These are obtained by a material balance using the equilibrium vaporization ratio K, and have appeared in the following, or similar. form many times in the literature. where La = mols of any component n in the separator liquid Ko — equilibrium vaporization ratio for any component at separator pressure and temperature Fa = mols of any component n in the feed Vn = mols of any component n in the vapor V = total mols of separator vapor These equations may of course be effectively and accurately solved by use of digital and analog computers. However, these are not usually readily available in field offices and the need often arises for fast results during routine operational problems. Consequently, many methods have been devised in an attempt to simplify the basic calculation.2-14 The methods proposed are generally satisfactory, but do not eliminate trial and error methods and the necessity of subsequent calculations to obtain the answer in volume terms. The purpose of this work. therefore, was to develop accurate charts that would give the result directly in gallons. When using stage separation the recoveries would be lower than those shown, for stabilization usually gives about 95 + per cent recovery on the potential stock tank components in the separator liquid. The recoveries are shown in terms of a 14 psi Reid Vapor Pressure product which has a true vapor pressure of 14.7 psia at 98°F. Consequently, this product represents a stable stock tank liquid under normal storage conditions. To estimate natural gasoline re- coveries by stabilization the volume shown may be multiplied by 1.20 for 18 Ib RVP natural gasoline and 1.36 for 26 lb RVP natural gasoline. PROCEDURE The five analyses shown in Table 1 were chosen since they were representative of wellstream compositions often found and had almost the same propanes plus liquid content, expressed in gallons per 1,000 std. cu ft of wellstream. The distribution of the components though is widely variant. A temperature range of 0-100°F. and a pressure range of 200 to 1,250 psia was chosen inasmuch as most separations fall within these limits The K values used were modified values of those originally published by Katz and Hachmuth.' A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

"Characterizing the spatial distribution of rock stresses is a challenge, especially in the geologically complex environments typically found at most metalliferous mines. Therefore, instead of focusing, specifically, on the task of making stress measurements, the engineer should instead attempt to develop a better understanding of the interaction between stress, mining geometry and rock mass behaviour. This paper demonstrates such an approach using a Canadian Shield hardrock mine case study, in which geomechanical models are used to relate stress, mining geometry, and rock mass properties to observed excavation response, and numerical modelling is used to better quantify this interaction.IntroductionUnderstanding how the mine geometry, field stresses and rock mass interact to produce the observed rock mass response to mining can be a significant challenge. Consider our present ability to quantify the basic geomechanical design input data. Mine geometry is normally quantified in more detail than is required for analysis purposes. Our understanding of rock mass strength and stiffness is far from complete, but established procedures do exist to obtain estimates of these parameters based on index and laboratory testing data and field mapping. Our ability to quantify field stresses is probably the most limited, in part because stress measurements are difficult and expensive to carry out, and in part because the stresses vary to an unknown degree from point to point within the rock mass. The engineer must, therefore, consider whether or not stress measurements are justified and, when they are, where the average stress state needs to be quantified and how many of which type of measurements will be required to determine the average stresses.Such was the case at Ansil mine, a massive sulphide deposit in hard rock located at a depth of more than one kilometre in the northern Québec portion of the Canadian Shield. The Ansil orebody was relatively rich, but small, with the potential for significant stress-related problems. As a result, geomechanical design had to be done carefully from the start – there would be little opportunity to modify the mining strategy once production had begun, and the economic consequences of stope dilution and rock mass instability would be severe. The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

"Thai Copper Industries (TCI) is a custom copper smelter and refinery in Rayong, Thailand, with an annual capacity of 165,000 tons of cathodes. It employs the El Teniente Technology as the primary smelting reactor to produce white metal from copper concentrates. The white metal is further treated in Hoboken Siphon Converters to produce blister copper then refined in anode furnaces before being cast into anodes for electro-refining in the on-site tankhouse.Thai Copper Industries is the first copper smelter to install and successfully operate on a commercial scale with the Air Liquide Shrouded Injection (ALSI™) Technology in the Hokoben converters with sonic injection of oxygen enriched air and nitrogen for cooling of the injector tip areas. Following commissioning and the establishment of operating practices, the performance of the Hoboken converters with ALSI™ Technology produced outstanding results. The unique combination of an El Teniente and Hoboken siphon converters, both of which are bath smelting operations, offers very high blowing and oxygen efficiencies. As a consequence, reverts recycling was accelerated with minimal build up on the mouth, end-plates or even below the siphon that is typical in Hoboken converters.These outstanding results in the Hoboken Siphon Converters with ALSI™ Technology helped the TCI Plant reach a production of about 75% of its capacity within four months despite the fact that the TCI staff is quite young and its converter know-how and experience are not yet fully developed."

"During the mid to late 1960s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace, supporting a large part of the world demand, until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to its production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1.5-kt/h (1,650-stph) hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market.BackgroundPotash production is a major Saskatchewan industry and has played a significant role in the economy for more than 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) Mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in 12 companies opening 10 mines by 1970. In 1975, Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan, and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine, near Saskatoon.Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 miles) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3,300 ft) below surface.PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN$7 billion.The $1.6-billion Cory expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 Mt/a (3 million stpy), an increase of 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy). To achieve 2.7 Mt/a (3 million stpy) of finished product and considering the 22.6 percent average production recovery (Potash Corp, 2013), 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) of ore must be hoisted to the surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly that the work was completed safely (Potash Corp., 2013)."

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

A table of factors for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, is presented. The table covers a pressure range from 10 to 10,000 psin in 10-psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The volume of helium is calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium, expressed as a factor from the table, and the known internal volume of the container. The calculation requires a single multiplication. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

This paper focuses on the dissolution of various Manganese based compact additions into liquid Magnesium. The experimental procedure employed cylindrical compacts with various Manganese compositions. The various temperatures of the additions and the Magnesium bath were measured simultaneously during the immersion of the additions into Magnesium bath. The exothermicity level of these additions during their dissolution into liquid Magnesium was determined. The relation of the exothermicity level with the dissolution kinetics was also examined. In addition, SEM and EDX work was conducted for additions, which were withdrawn from the Magnesium bath. Finally, the recovery of these additions was estimated by taking samples from the Magnesium bath and conducting ICP analyses.

Rock engineering tasks like tunnelling, dam and building construction, and rock slope stability rely heavily on properly estimating the rock’s uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), a crucial rock geomechanical characteristic. As high-quality specimen are not always possible, scientists often estimate UCS indirectly. The primary objective of this paper is to assess the efficacy of long short-term memory (LSTM), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), a combination of particle swarm optimisation (PSO) with an artificial neural network (ANN), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to estimate the UCS of sandstones from Jharia, Dhanbad, India. Point load index (PLI), porosity (n), P-wave velocity (Vp), density (ρ), and moisture content (%) are the parameters used for the present study. Finally, a comparison was made between the various prediction algorithms outputs. The findings of the study validated the effectiveness of computational intelligence methods in forecasting UCS compared to other models used in this paper. The KNN achieves overall the best results, with an R2 of 0.95 for training, 0.94 for testing, and an RMSE of 0.03 for training and 0.05 for testing.

"The height of a fractured zone due to high-intensity mining (HIM) plays a vital role in the safety analysis of coal mining under bodies of water. This paper described the characteristics of HIM. The processes of overburden failure transfer (OFT) are analyzed. The state of destruction transfers from a certain stratum to the upper stratum as face advance distance increases, and the processes of OFT are divided into two stages: transmission development stage and transmission termination stage. Through theoretical analysis, the limited suspension-distance and limited overhanging distance of each stratum are proposed to judge the damage of each layer. Based on this, the OFT criteria of fractured zone development are obtained. The mechanical model of strata suspended integrity and overhanging stability are established. Finally, a new method to predict the height of fractured zone due to HIM is put forward based on the processes of OFT, the limited suspension-distance, and the limited overhanging distance. Further, a HIM panel in the Datong coal mine is taken as an example. Theoretical methods are proposed, and engineering analogy is used to predict the height of the fractured zone, which is compared with in-situ measurements reported in the literature. The results show that the in-situ measurements for the height of the fractured zone are in close agreement with the theoretical calculation result. Therefore, the rationality and reliability of the theoretical method proposed to predict the height of fractured zone is verified.INTRODUCTIONThe height of the fractured zone (HFZ) due to the exploitation of coal is a key parameter for the safety analysis of coal mining under a body of water (Wenbing, Youfeng, and Hou, 2012). Accordingly, it is necessary to predict HFZ under the corresponding mining conditions before coal mining."

"Nkomati Nickel Mine in South Africa processes one of the world’s hardest ores in a 375k TPM autogenous grinding circuit. The plant employs an unconventional processing circuit, comprising a primary autogenous mill (AG or FAG) and pebble crushing circuit followed by a secondary hybrid pebble/ball mill and classification cyclone cluster.Advanced Process Control (APC) or Expert Control is now generally accepted as an advantage in most modern high capacity concentrator grinding circuits. This paper reviews the installation of model predictive control at Nkomati and examines the results and benefits of installation in an autogenous mill during plant ramp-up. The paper also demonstrates how predefining process control objectives together with good plant and supplier cooperation can achieve a robust and reliable APC implementation on a very short site program.The results conclusively demonstrate operational and economic benefits during circuit operation with the advanced process control system ON. Production performance and circuit stability were significantly better than during manual control."

The thermodynamics of tungsten ore decomposition in mineral acid and alkaline solutions were studied. The published thermodynamic data of tungsten minerals were collected and assessed. The Gibbs energies of CaWO4 (−1538.43 kJ/mol), FeWO4 (−1053.91 kJ/mol), MnWO4 (−1206.08 kJ/mol), H2WO4 (−1003.92 kJ/ mol), and Na2WO4 (−1455.58 kJ/mol, aq) at 25 °C were adopted in the calculation using HSC software. The results show that CaWO4 is decomposed more readily in Na2CO3 solution than in NaOH,while FeWO4 andMnWO4 aremore reactive inNaOH solutions. Froma thermodynamic point of view, tungsten ore decomposes easily in acid solutions despite most ΔGo T increasing slightly with temperature. Oxidizing Fe2+ to Fe3+ in acidic solutions facilitates decomposition of FeWO4, and the reaction of CaWO4 in H2SO4 solution occurs more easily than in other mineral acids, due to the formation of sparsely soluble CaSO4. The results fit well with the experimental data and industrial experience previously reported in the literature.
