The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen "run out" times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer's body weight, physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maximise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fire or explosion.

Until recently, the approach to the problem of treating complex ores bas been to produce, insofar as is possible, mono-metal concentrates which are treated in traditional zinc, lead and copper smelting circuits, with the residues and by-products from some of these circuits being retreated for the recovery of contained values either by a separate residue treatment process or along with the primary feed to the appropriate circuit. The continued development of the Imperial Smelting Process, with its ability to treat poly-metal concentrates, calls for a re-examination of the traditional approach to this problem, and this the paper attempts to do. A survey of recent progress in the technical development of the process is made and a summary of current operational performance is included.

A utilização de ligas Al-Si tem se expandido industrialmente principalmente no setor automobilístico. Cabeçotes, blocos de motor, rodas entre outros são exemplos de componentes produzidos com essas ligas. Estes componentes normalmente estão sujeitos a carregamento cíclico. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar o comportamento da liga A356 utilizando corpos de provas submetidos à fadiga por flexão rotativa nas condições brutas de fundição e tratadas termicamente por T6. Corpos de prova para ensaios de tração e de fadiga foram obtidos por fundição por gravidade em coquilhas. A comparação dos resultados foi realizada com os resultados do limite de resistência, do limite de escoamento, do alongamento e das curvas S-N. Adicionalmente análises fractográficas foram realizadas para verificar o comportamento de fratura. A liga tratada termicamente apresentou melhores resultados no ensaio de tração e de fadiga na faixa de 103<N<107.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

The present research work deals with the effective utilization of hematite ore containing goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite losson- ignition (LOI) phases in pellet making without deteriorating product pellet properties by optimizing the induration cycle especially drying and preheating of pellets. Adequate drying and preheating of pellets before sintering is of prime importance to sustain the desired properties of pellets. Green pellets of + 8 to − 16 mm size were prepared in a laboratory disc pelletizer and indurated by varying drying and preheating temperatures in a laboratory Raising Hearth Furnace (RHF). Produced pellets were assessed for physical and metallurgical properties. Improvement in drying and preheating temperature simultaneously helped in mitigating fired pellets’ property deterioration. Drying at 300 °C and preheating at 750 °C helped in the maximum removal of matrix LOI from the pellets before firing and enabled the production of pellets of desired properties. Laboratory scale findings successfully implemented at existing 4.2 MTPA capacity pellet plant of JSW Steel Ltd. Vijayanagar and high LOI iron ores (IOs) utilised which resulted in reduction of average monthly pellet fines generation by ~2 wt. %.

This paper presents recent research works on the removal of the tramp elements Cu, Sn, Zn and Pb from steel. The evaporation of Cu and Sn in iron-based melts treated at reduced pressure of the gas phase was studied in a vacuum induction melting furnace. The effect of chamber pressure, temperature and melt composition was investigated. Since the main source of contamination of steel with Sn and Zn is the recycling of tinplate and zinc coated steel, respectively, possibilities for the removal of meta1ic coatings in a scrap pre-treatment stage were studied, too. Tin was removed in the temperature range 400-5S0°C by treatment with reactive gases featuring high sulphur potential. Zinc can be removed by evaporation or by a combination of thermal and mechanical treatment. The paper discusses the thermodynamics of Pb in carbon-saturated iron melts, too.

Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. The Bureau of Mines Investigated the Copper Bullion claims at Rua Cove on the east coast of knight Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska, during November-December 1948 and March-April 1949. This project was part of the Bureau of Mines program for developing critical and strategic minerals in Alaska, Mineralization at the copper deposit on the Copper Bullion group of claims is mainly pyrrhotate and chalcopyrite, confined to a northeast-trending shear zone in the greenstone 2,000 feet northwest of Rua Cove. The property has been partly developed by two adits, by a number of crosscuts from the upper adit, and by several diamond-drill holes.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

"Lithium is the lightest of the metals, with high reactivity and great electrochemical potential. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and high caloric value, and it forms very light and resistant aluminium alloys. These properties make lithium an attractive element for use in battery manufacture and glass and ceramics production, in addition to its applications in the aeronautic industry. Today, two sources of raw material are economically viable for lithium production: pegmatite rocks and brine. The world production, in 2012, was approximately 150,000 tons of LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent), almost triple the production in 2000. The forecasted consumption for the current year, 2013, was approximately 162,000 tons of LCE, and for 2020, it could be as much as 280,000 tons of LCE, stimulated essentially by the growth of world production of electric (EV), hybrid (HEV) and hybrid plug-in vehicles (PHEV), the batteries of which are based on Li-ions. With the growth of world demand and increasing prices, lithium minerals such as spodumene, petalite and amblygonite, once considered uneconomical for the production of lithium carbonate, are regaining their economic value. New projects to produce lithium compounds based on mineral sources are being developed in many countries, aiming to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate (99.95% Li2CO3). Although Brazil has large lithium pegmatite reserves, the domestic production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide is very low, at approximately 600 tons of LCE, which represents 0.4% of the world production. The application of these products is mostly in the grease and ceramic industries. The national lithium market is under government protection due to its potential use for nuclear purposes. Thus, the industrialization activities and import and export of ores and lithium minerals, as well as organic and inorganic products, such as metallic lithium and lithium alloys, are controlled by the National Commission for Nuclear Energy (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear - CNEN). The objectives of this work to quantify the real lithium demand in the Brazilian market, considering that a large amount of lithium is indirectly imported in the form of the Li-ion batteries used in equipment such as mobile phones, cameras, tablets, notebooks and e-bikes, and to compare this demand with the current national production of LCE. Finally, some technological alternatives will be discussed, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the lithium industry in Brazil."

A considerable part of gold encapsulated in some refractory sulphides can be dissolved during sulphide matrix decomposition in non-complexing aqueous media. This has been concluded from laboratory results of gold extraction from pyritic and arsenopyritic concentrate containing 172.8ppm Au, into 10% hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids. The degree of sulphides decomposition in the non-oxidative acids limits the gold extraction from this specific concentrate to about 10%. In the case of nitric acid, the gold dissolution follows the rapid decomposition of sulphides, reaching 32 to 42% of extraction at almost total decomposition of the sulphidic minerals. Accumulation of gold in this acidic and non-complexing solution to several ppm was not affected by the soluble products of the sulphides decomposition. An attempt to explain this gold behaviour is undertaken and some practical implications are discussed. In the investigated concentrate the "soluble gold" is mostly associated with arsenopyrite. This is consistent with the latest findings of other authors that gold disseminated in arsenopyrite can occur as cation Au3+. In a comparative test the gold extraction into highly concentrated chloride solution, in the same oxidative conditions, amounted to 92.34%.

Arrium’s OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia is a fully integrated plant which operates a single blast furnace. The key operational objective has been to maintain high process availability and stability while maximising the process efficiency and the produced hot metal quality. All ferrous raw material input feeds are sourced exclusively from company iron ore deposits in the nearby Middleback Ranges. The Whyalla blast furnace has mostly operated using a combination of a high percentage of pellet feed, produced in Whyalla, together with screened lump ore.The unique ironmaking challenge has always been to extract the maximum value from the ferrous burden feed available locally. In earlier times, high-grade hematite lump ore was available for both screened lump ore and pellet production. Blast furnace trials from acid to fluxed pellet feed commenced in 1977. The furnace pellet feed has been wholly fluxed since 1981. Many pellet/lump ore feed mixes and significant pellet chemistry composition design changes have been made over the years. These changes have been aimed at best balancing the ferrous burden availability/cost and the optimum reducibility/high temperature melting behaviour of the charged ferrous feed within the blast furnace. In more recent times since 2007, the Whyalla blast furnace operation has transitioned from a hematite based pellet feed to a magnetite based pellet feed while there is an ongoing contest dealing with diminishing absolute quality/increased variability raw material feed inputs.The paper will detail key elements of the Whyalla blast furnace operational philosophy with regards to ferrous feed use and process optimisation. This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." During 1958, prospecting parties working for the Mackenzie Syndicate in the Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories, identified tungsten mineralization and located the property now being developed by the Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. Scheelite mineralization, associated with pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite, occurs in lime silicate skarn replacement zones within a limestone-chert-argillite series intruded by granitic dykes originating from the ? main batholithic mass underlying the sedimentary beds. The results of surface outcrop sampling and 15,000 feet of grid-pattern diamond drilling have been combined to outline an orebody estimated to contain 1.32 million tons, grading 2.51 per cent WO after applying a 10 per cent dilution factor for mining purposes. T HE property of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. is located in the upper Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories. Skarn-type replacement deposits containing scheelite mineralization are .situated between elevations of 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level along the east flank of the mountain range forming the boundary between the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. The nearest supply center for the area is Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, located at Milepost 635 on the Alaska Highway.
