"Solidification/stabilization (S/S) treatment is used to treat hazardous wastes for disposal and in the remediation/site restoration of contaminated land . SIS is also an increasingly popular technology for Brownfield (industrial property) redevelopment, since treated wastes can often be left on-site and to improve the soil for subsequent construction. This paper discusses the applicability of the technology to various wastes, basic cement chemistry relating to SIS, tests used to design treatability studies and to verify treatment, basics on implementation of the technology in the field , and examples of SIS use at brownfield sites, including a former wood preserving site, former manufactured gas plant sites, a former electric generating station, and a shopping mall development.INTRODUCTIONSolidification/Stabilization (S/S) is a widely used treatment for the management/disposal of a broad range of contaminated media and wastes; particularly those contaminated with substances classified as hazardous in the United States. The treatment involves mixing a binding reagent into the contaminated media or waste. The treatment protects human health and the environment by immobilizing contaminants within the treated material. Immobilization within the treated material prevents migration of the contaminants to human, animal and plant receptors. SIS treatment has been used to treat radioactive wastes since the 1950s and hazardous waste since the 1970's (Conner 1990). SIS continues as a cornerstone treatment technology for the management of radioactive waste, hazardous waste, and site remediation and Brownfield redevelopment."

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the extent of phosphate resources available for recovery by the experimental borehole mining method in the Southeastern Coastal Plain of the United States- Phosphate re- sources at overburden depths greater than 30 m are as a rule currently unsuitable for recovery through conventional mining methods because of economic, environmental, or technical considerations. In the identified deposit areas, borehole mining operations are projected to yield a more favorable rate of return and to be environmentally more desirable than conventional surface mining. Borehole mining resource estimates presented in this study are preliminary and designed to serve as a basis for future resource evaluations, as the current data base is relatively sparse and incomplete. The resulting resources have, therefore, been classified as hypothetical and speculative and are subject to up- dating as additional exploratory data become available. Hypothetical and speculative resources amenable to borehole mining are estimated to total about 385 billion metric tons (rat) of phosphate matrix with a minimum in situ grade of 5 pct P205. With projected borehole mining capabilities and current conventional beneficiation procedures, this resource would make available approximately 64 billion mt of phosphate rock product at an estimated grade of 30 pct P205.

Transportation methods such as rail, piggyback, truck and barge are compared, and their impact on Industrial Minerals producer's costs and profits examined. The customer impact on our businesses due to deregulation is also discussed.

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

The age-hardening of Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni marten-sites containing small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, or molybdenum has been studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electyon-probe microanaly-sis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The effects of temperature and composition on the aging kinetics have been studied in detail for Fe-20 pctNi-Ti martensites. All the martensites hardened on aging at 400" to 500 "C with a single aging peak. In the Fe-20 pct Ni-Ti martensites hardening was associated with the formation of a fine dispersion of NisTi. No precipitation was observed in an Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloy, although the hardness increased from 327 to 545 Dph during aging at 500°C. Copper was precgitated from an Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7pct Cu alloy, at least during the later stages of age-hardening. Hardening in an Fe-18 pctNi-5pct Mo alloy was associated with the precipitation of an intemzetallic compound tentatively identified as NisMo. The formation of austenite and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite occur simultaneously with the normal precipitation processes &ring aging of these alloys. THE age-hardening of substitutional iron-base martensites is an important subject for study since age-hardening is one of the principal means of strengthening the substitutional iron-base martensites in precipitation-hardening stainless steels1 and maraging steels.a~4 In contrast to Fe-C martensites, these martensites are relatively soft and ductile in the as-quenched condition, due to the low solid-solution hardening effect of the substitutional elements as compared to carbon. Also, these martensites are hardened by aging at low temperatures in contrast to Fe-C martensites which generally soften on tempering. Titanium and aluminum, singly or in combination, as well as copper and molybdenum, have been the principal alloying additions to stainless steels to obtain an age-hardening reaction.' Ti-A1 or Co-Mo-Ti combinations have been used in the case of maraging steels.3"4 The present work has been confined to a study of the age-hardening characteristics of an Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni martensite to which small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were added in order to study the effects of each alloying element separately. The age-hardening characteristics of these alloys were studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electron-probe micro-analysis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The types and dispersion of precipitates, the formation of austenite, and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite all were studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys. The compositions of the alloys studied are listed in Table I. The level of 18 to 21 pct Ni was chosen to assure complete transformation to martensite on quenching and is the same nickel level used in maraging steels. The concentrations of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were chosen after a study of the and Fe-Ni-MO' ternary diagrams indicated how much of each alloying element could be dissolved in austenite. Alloys with 2 and 4 pct Cu were also studied, but these did not show precipitation hardening at the nickel levels studied and will not be discussed further. The alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and high-purity* nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum by vacuum melting of 20-lb heats. These were vacuum-cast into two 8-lb ingots. The ingots were hot-rolled at 1100°C to 1/2-in. plate and subsequently cut into 3/8-in. cubes. The cubes were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules and solution-treated for 16 hr at 1100°C, except for the Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7 pct Cu alloy and Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloys which were solution-treated for 16 hr at 1300" and at 1250"C, respectively. The development effort described herein was directed toward the design and development of a flexible communication system to provide two-way section communications between any telephone on an MCM-101 telephone FDM exchange and a miner provided with a uhf walkie-talkie transceiver. The system also provides normal communication between miners within a working section through the uhf coupler interface repeater.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research to recover aluminum from kaolinitic clay and other nonbauxitic domestic resources. As part of this work, calcined Georgia kaolin was prepared by a process that prevents slime formation and makes the leached residues fast settling and easy to filter. The leaching reaction for calcined kaolinitic clay in a 5 pct stoichiometric excess of boiling 23-to 26-pct HCI was found to be zero order. Rate constants based on the weight-fraction of aluminum in the clay were found to be between 0.095 and 0.15 min-1 depending on feed preparation and leaching parameters. The mathematical relationships between aluminum extraction and time for both batch and continuous, stirred-tank operations were derived and verified experimentally.

The volatilization behavior of rhenium in the process of oxidative roasting of a molybdenite concentrate with 43.55 wt.% Mo and 321 g/t Re is explored based on identifying the relationship between volatilization of sulfur and rhenium. The results show that rhenium volatizes after sulfur and precise control of operating variables plays an important role in separating rhenium from molybdenite concentrate. When the roasting parameters are optimized as follows: roasting temperature 600 oC, roasting time 2 h, roasting atmosphere air, the volatilization rate of rhenium reaches 89.26%. In the process of solidification roasting, the volatilization rate of rhenium decreased almost to zero when the ratio of slaked lime/molybdenum concentrate was 10% excess to the stoichiometric requirement at 600 oC for 2 h.

The mining and use of coal creates a significant amount of waste material that needs to be safely disposed of. It is likely that in the medium term, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. will categorize all such products as a new category – special waste. This would make the materials subject to many of the requirements for handling toxic waste, which will complicate the disposal of such products and significantly increase the disposal costs. Underground disposal would, therefore, seem to be the obvious solution, especially if the placed material can have low or no permeability, so that water table pollution does not present a serious long-term issue after placement. Significant additional advantages could be derived from this backfilling, including the reduction or elimination of surface subsidence, increased extraction, reduced surface waste disposal footprint and the elimination of explosion-proof seals in worked out areas. The research using a specific coal waste product as a typical example proved that the method of placing the backfill at a high density with low permeability is technically viable, but it must be made more cost effective and the other potential benefits quantified and costed in order to present a true comparison.

As an industry with major potential impacts (both good and bad) on water resources and due to the rising costs of process water, the mining and metallurgical processing industry has a key responsibility to contribute to the overall goal of preserving both the quantity and quality of water available within the watersheds they operate in. As we plan for new and existing mining and metallurgical projects, we need to consider a hierarchy of options to minimize our impact within the watersheds we operate; keeping clean water clean by diverting around our operations; reduction in the amount of water we use; reuse of water wherever possible, and improvements to water quality for recycling and/or release to environment. Technology is needed to treat water to improve its quality for reuse or release to the original watershed. While lime precipitation followed by sulfide polishing is effective for removal of most of the metals, it does little or nothing to remove ammonium ions and anions such as chloride, nitrate, molybdate, arsenate and selenite/selenite. Regulations on sulfate limits in treated discharge water has drawn close attention to the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD). Management of brine and salt disposal is also posing a problem due to strict regulations and cost of disposal. This paper will: (a) address issues associated with managing water with the objective of maintaining water sheds—status quo-during and after operation (b) discuss potential technologies for advanced water treatment plants.

Diffuse emissions are that directly related to particulate matter suspended from civil structures, materials disposed in conveyor belts carried out by wind, stack e reclaimers operations and that one where dust collectors are not able to act correctly. Vale implemented in the last years a unique system capable to measure this kind of dust, called RAMPs (Dust Monitoring Automatic Network), which creates an analytical net in Tubarao industrial site, located in Vitória, ES. In order to prevent diffuse emissions in Tubarao’s pellets stockyard, it was proposed and developed a predictive model based on operational and climate variables available on the site, using big data and advanced analytics tools. The models developed shows to be adherent to the real emissions rates measured by the RAMPs and proved to be an efficient tool to predict emissions over the internal target with 4 hours of precedence.

"Cape Breton is an island on the eastern extremity of Nova Scotia, Canada. Here, coal mining under the Atlantic Ocean has been a way of life since the early French militia mined coal for heating purposes in 1720. Despite many ups and downs over the intervening years, the coal industry has survived and is now in a favourable position to benefit from the upswing in international coal usage.Mining in Cape Breton Early mining in Cape Breton was done by hand picks and shovels. The coal was loaded into mine cars which were hauled by horses to the main haulage system for transport to surface. Later, compressed-air cutting machines and drills led to the use of explosives to blast the coal so that it could be loaded by hand and transported as above. In 1923, longwall mining (by hand) was introduced. In 1950, the Dominion Coal Company developed the Dosco continuous miner in order to mechanize the longwall coal-getting operation. At this time, conveyor belts came into wide-spread use, along with diesel locomotives to haul mine cars from the longwall face to the main transport system. During this period, coal was also mined by conventional mechanized room-and-pillar equipment such as cutting machines, loaders, roof bolters, etc. This system evolved into the use of the continuous ·miners of today, which are employed in the Lingan Mine room-and-pillar section. However, this method is only satisfactory at shallow depths and gradients. For these reasons, almost all the coal in this coal field will be mined by longwall methods. In 1968, the Government of Canada expropriated the assets of the Dominion Coal Company on Cape Breton Island in order to prevent complete closure of an uneconomic industry by its owners. The government created, by an Act of Parliament, the Cape Breton Development Corporation which now operates the coal mines, coal preparation plants, railway, shipping pier and ancillary services (Fig. 2). Since its inception, the Corporation has closed three mines, opened two new mines, is in the process of developing a third new mine, and has invested heavily in the one mine which remains from its previous owners."

This paper outlines the advances made in vacuum filtration as developed by Outomec Process Filters and details the results obtained at a number of Australian installations. The first section of the paper details the technical advances made by the use of ceramic media in vacuum filtration and explains the reasons for the use of the technology. The second part of the paper discusses a number of Australian installations of the ceramic vacuum filter and where possible compares the actual experiences with those predicted from the test work which preceded the installations. The Ceramec Capillary Vacuum Filter is a vacuum disc filter which combines the proven mechanical attributes of a disc filter with exciting new ceramic vacuum technology from Outomec of Finland.

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006, and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 Moment Magnitude (Mw), respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016, the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. Evaluation of 2152 geological data points and modeling revealed three major geological factors in common with the majority of the 181 recorded +1.0 ML events from 2009 through 2016. Computer programs commonly used to simulate mining operations generally require a fair amount of data. The common data input methods have been by either creating an ASCII data file or answering numerous questions during the data input phase. Both methods of data entry are tedious, time consuming, and inflexible. A screen handling system has been developed to drive FORTRAN-77 application software for the MS-DOS environment. The system utilizes keyboard functions with an aid of extended ANSI codes. It also allows a multi-view input data entries.

The mineralogical and textural characteristics of the volcanogenic massive sulphide ores from the Aljustrel and Neves-Corvo deposits have been studied by ore microscopy techniques since 1977. Several ore types have been recognized, and the ore paragenesis, ore textures, and behaviours of different ore types during grinding and concentration processes, have been determined. An ore classification was established for use in metallogenetic studies, ore reserve calculations, selectivity during mining, and control of the ore beneficiation processes. In addition, an empirical method was developed for supplying, on time, the qualitative and semi-quantitative information needed for processing the Aljustrel ores and for optimizing the Neves-. Corvo copper and tin concentrators.

INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

Safety management is an important mortal and business function in construction. Contractors have traditionally tracked and reported lagging indicators, e.g. fatalities and lost-time accident rates, to measure their safety performance and stay in compliance with relevant regulations. Over the last several decades, contractors became more proactive in their approach to safety and developed programs that track leading indicators, e.g. safety audits and safety climate. In particular, safety climate measures workers? perception of safety management and its effectiveness in the workplace. Past literatures indicated that, while some industrial construction contractors ignore safety climate measures, others are limited by a lack of a formal means to measure safety climate. In this study, a survey approach is used to measure an industrial construction contractor?s safety climate through three key areas: management commitment, job control, and general safety climate. As a pilot study, a total of 214 individuals at a fabrication facility participated in the survey to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed survey approach. This survey study also confirms that job control and management commitment have a positive correlation and that worker demographics have an effect on respondents? perceptions of management commitment.
