Following a failure of a tailings pond darn at a mine in Andalusia, Spain, a huge effluent stream, that contained about 1 g/1 Zn and significant amounts of ferrous, ferric, calcium, copper, aluminium and manganese cations has to be treated, to prevent pollution of a nature reserve. EGMASA, as the regional government environmental agency, suggested to improve the current depuration process by recovery of the Zn from the effluent. A solvent extraction (SX) followed by electrowinning (EW) was proposed and developed to remove zinc.. A pre-treatment stage consisting in bio-oxidation of ferrous iron by using a bacterial process followed by an alkaline precipitation was employed because iron in the effluent is incompatible with both the SX and the EW processes. The SX process was developed successfully at the laboratory scale and verified in a pilot plant on-site, using two Bateman Pulsed Columns for extraction and stripping of zinc. The results were satisfactory obtaining a recovery of 90% of Zn. The process was suitable for industrial application.

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a longwall installation roadway (faceroad) design methodology that could be utilized by suitably qualified colliery personnel. This goal was achieved in 2012 and the design methodology (and software package) is referred to as Analysis and Design of Faceroad Roof Support (ADFRS). The intended benefits to underground operations, in the provision of this information and resource, are a safer and more productive workplace.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the use of Bureau-developed flat and cylindrical hydraulic borehole pressure cells. A brief description of the fabrication, installation, and pressurizing equipment is given and pressurizing procedures are discussed. Theories available on evaluation of data from the flat and cylindrical pressure cells and examples of data analysis and stress evaluation are also presented.

The Bureau of Mines obtained samples of oil - reservoir rock from wells in Ohio , Pennsylvania , and West Virginia as part of an investigation of the susceptibility of petroleum reservoirs to secondary - recovery techniques . Illustrations and tables showing the geographic and stratigraphic sequence of the cored reservoirs and 40 tables of detailed lithologic descriptions of the reservoirs are presented . Information relevant to geologic surroundings , oilfield history , coring and well logging operations , and reservoir core analyses are referenced throughout the report .

"In 2006, a Canadian steel maker embarked on an ambitious initiative to become “Best in Class in Energy Management”. This initiative provides the framework for this paper, with some augmentation from other energy management projects carried out by Hatch. The initiative focused on identifying energy/GHG management improvements leading to low-cost implementation of energy savings or GHG emission reduction. The key components of the approach were:• Review site energy management practices and benchmark internationally.• Review best technical practices and benchmark against public energy intensity data.• Conducted a site-wide Energy Assessment and physical review of operating areas.• Facilitation of on site-workshops with staff to prioritize savings opportunities, as well as identify and remove implementation barriers.• Development of an Energy Management Action Plan for implementation of improvements.Most organizations can produce, with relative ease, a list of ideas for saving energy, implementing them is the challenge. This paper addresses these issues as well as the profitability of the energy efficiency improvements and the consequences for GHG emissions.IntroductionWhen one of the authors was an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the technical drawing instructor made a statement that was both humorous, and mildly profound. He claimed that the most successful engineer is one who is both lazy and diligent. Lazy, in the sense that the engineer is constantly on the lookout for an easier, more efficient, way to do something. Diligent, in the sense that the engineer will work tirelessly to come up with a good technical solution for the easier way. This paper, somewhat of an anomaly in a compilation of technical proceedings, hopes to break the mould a little, and to show a “lazy-diligent” way of reducing the carbon emissions from an industrial facility, using a steel plant as an example."

Photogrammetry surveys were used to document a footwall slab failure that occurred at a surface coal mine located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Photographs taken before and after the failure provided the pre- and post-failure geometry of the slope and the failed slab. A 2D finite element model was constructed using slope profiles. The model contained joint elements that represented the bedding surface upon which the slab slid and the model was used to analyze the footwall slope. The in situ stresses, rock properties and the bedding surface shear strength and stiffness properties are discussed. The process of mining out a valley and exposing a highwall was modelled. As expected, elastic valley rebound occurred in the model, but shear stress and shear displacement reversals along the slip surface were also observed. The modelling results provided new insight into shear strength degradation that occurs when the pit floor approaches and then passes a specific point in the highwall.

During the last decade, the increasing price of gold has renewed interest in the various metallurgical techniques for recovering precious metals. Much of the recent technology advance has been aimed at low grade deposits resulting in more complex processes and the necessity of tighter economic control. These factors along with more stringent environmental constraints have made it necessary to optimize each process to minimize energy and raw material consumption and reduce waste discharge. In most cases, detailed process analysis is required to detect inefficiencies and provide alternative solutions for process improvement. Also during this same period, the computer has become widely accepted and computerized mathematical modeling has been applied to an increasingly broader range of problems. Microcomputer based process modeling and simulation systems are routinely used to analyze and improve communition, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical processes for the recovery of precious metals.

If these hopes materialize, the Sydney coal field will once again be regarded as a valuable asset in our national inventory of energy and metallurgical coals. The economic possibilities for the Sydney collieries depend on performance at the pits and in the market place. Because this audience is already well informed about colliery planning, I would like to start with an assessment of the modern coal market insofar as it may relate to the Sydney field. Since 1950 we have seen a vast growth in the population and industrial empires of the western world which has resulted in an enormous and escalating demand for energy. If the energy supply pattern of the first 50 years of this century had been followed, this would have led to an immense demand for coal."

Jabiru Metals completed a feasibility study on the Jaguar Base Metal Project in July 2005. The study was based on conventional truck haulage via a decline. Conveyor haulage was considered but not in sufficient detail to provide a meaningful comparison. The current study investigates the cost and productivity of alternative ore transport systems for the Jaguar project. The options considered are conventional underground truck, conveyor, road train, rigid frame truck, monorail haulage and shaft hoisting. Shaft hoisting was not considered in detail due to the high capital outlay for such a relatively short mine life of less than six years. This study goes beyond the common approach of evaluating haulage systems in isolation; it includes development costs, timing of ore production and costs associated with mine services as well as administration and milling costs. The results of this study indicate that the best haulage option for the Jaguar project is conventional truck using the Hitachi AH400 trucks. The net present value (NPV) for this option is A$8.13 million higher than the next best option namely the Kiruna E635 electric truck. The conveyor option has the lowest operating cost per tonne of ore but the longer development time negatively impacts on its NPV. The monorail option is considered impractical due to the number and length of trains required to achieve production targets.

The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher' estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,' however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,' in his test of Cottrell's theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell's theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley's assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12'13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a', an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. We write: For the energy of the crystal where pi(p) is the probability (either zero or one) of finding an atom of type i (i = 1, 2) at site (p), which is shorthand for (pl, pz, p3) and pj(p + r) is that for an atom of type j (j = 1, 2) at the site (p + r), which is shorthand for (pl + rl, The coupling parameter, resents the energy associated with the pair Pi(p), Pj(p + r). Between 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the mining history and minerals information for areas in and near the San Isabel National Forest to appraise the mineral resources present and determine the types of deposits, and their location in the Forest, that could be mined economically if sufficient demand and metal prices existed. The two major metallic deposit-types that are of national mineral resource significance within the Forest are stockwork- molybdenum (with tungsten and tin) and carbonate-replacement zinc-lead-silver deposits. Historically, small gold placers, gold-quartz veins, silver-quartz veins, skarn iron and copper deposits, volcanogenic copper-zinc-precious metal deposits, and base- and precious-metal veins have been mined. Barite, carbonate rocks, gypsum, other non-metallic deposits, and pegmatites, have also been mined. Sand and gravel, present in large volumes, occurs along and has been mined outside the Forest along the upper Arkansas River valley. Turquoise and gemstones are present in small amounts and are of interest to collectors and jewelers. Geologically, sediment-hosted uranium and copper are present in small occurrences but no resources have been identified. Geothermal resources are related to the Rio Grande rift which parallels the central part of the Forest. Four hot spring areas are present - two of these are within the Forest. Because of the low power requirements of the region, and the presence of other generating facilities, these geothermal resources have had only limited local use. Evaluation of mine models that may be found in the region show that base-metal deposits require a high precious-metal component to be economic. Although molybdenum can be produced at economically competitive prices, there is little demand for the product. Capital costs to start new molybdenum mines would be very high and it is not likely that new mines will be put into production in the near future.

Mineral dressing research was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the St. Joseph Lead Co., on three samples of iron ore from the Pea Ridge deposit in central Missouri. The objective was to provide information on how to upgrade these submarginal ores and produce marketable concentrates. Samples were prepared from drill-hole cores of similar composition and character to produce (1) a medium-grade mixed hematite and magnetite, (2) a high-grade mixed hematite and magnetite, and (3) a high-grade magnetite. In all three ores phosphorus and sulfur constituted objectionable impurities; excessive amounts of silica were also present in the medium-grade ore.

Life Cycle Assessment has been used to compare the environmental performance of landfilling versus recycling of the zinc used for galvanizing steel. Hypothetical process routes were com-posed involving four different EAF dust treatment processes; Waelz kiln, DC-furnace, EZINEX and slag fuming, as well as scrap dezincing. The study shows that recycling of zinc used for galvanizing steel has environmental benefits in that it saves zinc resources. However, zinc recovery does not necessarily decrease the potential impact on global warming and acidification. The magnitude of these two impact categories is tightly correlated with the amount and type of primary energy consumed in a process. Due to the high electricity consumption in the dezincing process, this route has the highest impact on Global Warming Potential as well as Acidification Potential. The major part of the energy requirement for the production of zinc from primary and secondary sources is consumed in the reduction of ZnO to Zn. The consequence is that the theoretically possible savings in primary energy by recycling zinc-containing materials are relatively minor. The impact categories "land use" and "waste generation" are not considered in this study, but most likely the evaluation of such impacts would further increase the potential environmental impact of the landfill alternative. The results also show that the location of an electricity-intensive process highly affects the potential environmental impact. Comparing process and material alternatives in LCA studies where branch average data is used, is considerably more complex than when LCA is used within a company.

This Bureau of Mines research study found gas emission rates from an advancing face, and flows and pressure of gas from an exploration drill hole were dependent upon the geology of salt encountered in a domal salt mine. Normal production-grade "pure" salt adjacent to an anomalous' zone was found to have a methane emission rate of less than 5 ft3/ ton (0.1 m3/t) of mined salt from a room advanced by a continuous miner. Extremely low gas flows [less the 4 ft3/h (0.1 m3/h)] and lack of pressure buildup were also observed from this normal salt in a 154-ft (47-m) exploration drill hole. These data indicate that methane emissions should not be a problem when mining in this type of salt. In the adjacent anomalous zone, methane emission rates ranged from 15 to 70 ft3/ton (0.4 to 1.8 m3/t) of mined salt from an advancing face. Gas flows of approximately 42 ft3/h (1.2 m3/h), and pressures in excess of 900 psig (6,200 kPa) were observed in an exploration drill hole when the anomalous zone was encountered. This information suggests a greater methane emission hazard from the anomalous zone than from the associated normal salt. If this trend of increasing emissions problems associated with anomalous zones of salt is common with similar anomalous zones encountered or observed in other domal salt mines, then special control strategies should be employed to minimize this potential mining hazard.

Spray-applied polyurethane foam was used to insulate the walls of heated rooms excavated in permafrost. The experiment was designed to determine whether polyurethane foam can be sprayed successfully on frozen ground under freezing conditions and to measure the effectiveness of the insulation in maintaining--at elevated temperatures for an extended period--a room excavated in frozen ground. Two manufacturers' foams were investigated in the laboratory. Subsequently, one of the foams was employed to insulate two small rooms, one in frozen gravel and one in frozen silt, in an experimental tunnel belonging to the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (USACRREL) near Fairbanks, Alaska. Following insulation, heat was introduced into the two rooms. Heat migration across the insulating barrier into the walls, in addition to wall closures, was monitored over an 8-month period. The results show that polyurethane foam can be successfully sprayed on frozen ground in below-freezing temperatures. Given this type of insulation, together with winter cold to supercool the surrounding ground, it should be possible to maintain a shaft or heated room in permafrost for several years.

Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. This paper will provide an overview of the testing methodology and results along with a review of the potential for SART to be applied to complex gold ores with poly-metallic deposits to improve project economics, operability and waste management.CITATION:Littlejohn, P, Kratochvil, D and Hall, A, 2013.
