Potash is one of the essential chemicals used in fertilizing soil deficient in natural minerals . Europe uses a large tonnage of potash in the form of easily soluble salts , and this is particularly true of those countries where the natural minerals in the soil have been exhausted owing to intensive cropping of the land . The application of potash to the soil in these countries is essential if normal crops are to be obtained ; during the war , some European countries were unable to obtain sufficient potash , and productivity of the farming areas declined seriously . • The largest -known deposits of potash in the world ; with the possible. exception of Russia , occur in Germany , and the German output of processed salts constituted about 65 percent of world production prior to the war . The German potash-plant installations are large , modern , brick and steel construction and apparently built for a planned operation of many years . Two districts produced approximately 80 percent of the German potash; the Werra -Fulda district , near Vacha , had the largest production , and the Sudharz district , near Nordhausen and Sonderhausen , was second . (Fig . 1. ) Hannover and Stassfurt were two smaller producers . Potash fertilizers are rated in terms of potassium oxide (K20 ) . The usual basis for calculation of production or application of the salt is to reduce the potash content to 40 percent K₂0 .

US Tin Mission To Study Costs in Far East A move to obtain adequate supplies of tin at prices the United States is willing to pay was initiated when the interagency tin mission left for the Far East. The Mission, which includes representatives of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, State Department, Defense Minerals Procurement Agency and the Bureau of Mines will go to Indonesia and Malaya. The primary purpose of the mission, according to officials, will be to study tin production costs, not to negotiate for the purchase of tin. The mission will be prepared to enter into negotiations, if the Far Eastern producers are amenable. The United States withdrew as a large-scale buyer of tin some months ago in protest against what it considered exorbitant prices being charged in the Singapore market. Subsequent attempts to negotiate for a steady tin supply at what this country considers reasonable prices have been unavailing. The U. S. is prepared to enter into a two or three year contract with the price of tin somewhere between $1.00 to $1.12 per lb. The decision to abstain from the market has not yet put a squeeze on U. S. supplies. Substantial quantities of tin still are coming in from Malaya under an old contract.

The Open Pit Mine Production Scheduling Problem (OPMPSP) is a complex optimization problem that seeks to determine the best sequence for extracting mineralized material from the ground in order to maximize the Net Present Value (NPV). This process must take into account various capacity constraints, such as mining rates, processing limits, stockpiling capacities, blending requirements, and precedence constraints, which dictate the order in which blocks can be extracted. Traditionally, the OPMPSP has been formulated as a mixed integer programming problem, employing binary and continuous variables to represent the extraction of each block. However, this approach has limitations, particularly when it comes to addressing the stockpiling issue. In response, some researchers have proposed mathematical models, which offer a more accurate representation of the problem but come with their own set of challenges. In this study, an alternative approach to tackle the OPMPSP with stockpiling by employing constraint programming (CP) is explored. The method was carefully tested on the Newman1 dataset from the well-known Minelib library. The results show that the CP-based model obtained a production schedule having about 2.69 % higher NPV than the NPV of the solution, which is recorded in the Minelib Library.

"INTRODUCTION Because of its interest in accident prevention, the Federal Bureau of Mines has cooperated with city officials and utilities in investigating the causes of explosions in sewers, manholes, and other underground spaces and has aided in the development of means to prevent such explosions. For several years this Bureau has cooperated with the Boston Edison Co. and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. of Boston, Mass.,for the purpose of detecting and eliminating combustible and physiologically harmful gases in manholes in Boston and vicinity.These investigations 5/ have shown that combustible gases from the usual sources — leakage from gas—distributing systems and underground tanks and gasoline wastes — can be located and the dangerous conditions remedied by a well—planned, adequately supervised, systematic, and continuous manhole survey. However, other types of gas contamination, termed ""soil"" gases, are present in manholes at times and are more difficult to eliminate because they have no fixed origin and because seasonal and barometric chances affect their production and passage into the manhole. Soil gases usually are abnormally high in carbon dioxide and low in oxygen and contain varying amounts of methane. They are especially dangerous to men entering manholes because they lack sufficient oxygen to support life."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) derives from the oxidation of sulfide minerals, primarily pyrite (FeS2), and is the most severe environmental issue facing the minerals industry. The most common short-term approach to AMD treatment is migration control, such as acid neutralization and metal/metalloid and sulfate removal, through the addition of alkaline materials, including lime (Ca (OH)2), limestone (Ca CO3), gangue minerals and industrial wastes. This requires the continuous input of materials and may result in the production of a vast amount of secondary sludge requiring further treatment and disposal. Addition of chemicals is usually more important in metal/metalloid removal than in sulfate removal unless the sulfate is present in very high concentrations. A more promising long-term strategy for AMD prevention is source control through the complete removal of pyritic minerals and encapsulation of potential risk minerals by coating with impermeable surface layers. This is regarded as the most cost-effective approach, although the mechanisms underpinning this and the implementation procedures are yet to be fully elucidated. It is likely that long- and short-term practices can be combined to optimize the remediation of contaminated mining sites. Some factors such as differing geological and mineralogical characteristics and transportation costs must also be considered for the successful implementation of AMD prevention and remediation strategies. This review also considers some implications for AMD remediation, but the promising bioremediation of AMD is not discussed as it has been extensively reviewed.

To test the effects of impact on mine seals, a projectile generator and two seals have been constructed. The projectile generator is a 12-inch (30.5 cm) inner diameter steel pipe with a 4-inch (10 cm) wall, is 8.5 feet (2.6 m) in length, and sealed on one end. Projectiles are propelled by a charge of black powder with a wooden wad and are held in place by foam sabots in the bore. This system, combined with the large bore, allows firing of many different potential projectiles that may be found in an underground mine at a high velocity into the seals.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

This paper describes an installation of a medium-voltage adjustable frequency motor drive (AFD) on a high starting torque regrinding mill. This type of application is typically found in the mineral industry dealing with hard ore. The AFD electrical architecture is introduced from line to load. The type of closed loop encoder feedback motor control algorithm is briefly described. The results of the AFD motor identification auto-tuning are compared against the manufacturer’s supplied data. The motor drive performance results are shown for pre-ramp DC fluxing, high starting torque with overload current, excessive load torque stall condition, and blocked rotor. The instrumentation and arrangement for the two watt-meter method to capture low frequency data are presented. The data shown is from the input power quality meter, the AFD computer tool, the output motor protection relay, an oscilloscope, and load shaft connected strain gauge (rotating telemetry for torque assessment). These types of high starting torque constant torque loads are found in mining and process industry applications employing AC adjustable frequency drives. Using field results should help demystify the use of voltage matching output transformers in AFD applications including constant torque loads

A new technique was used to obtain detailed sonic logging data in drill holes above the water table at a coal mine site in northeastern New Mexico. The equipment was developed under contract to the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy to indirectly evaluate the in situ structural properties of coal and overburden. The system comprises a hydraulically operated, wall-clamping downhole probe compatible with standard four-conductor logging cable, and a surface control module. Resolution of layering is 0.6 meter (2.0 ft), and a redundancy of data from separate receivers provides accurate timing measurements. Preliminary results in the settled overburden of an excavated long-wall panel indicated a low average velocity zone, extending approximately 18 meters (60 ft) into the immediate roof of the coal seam. Subsequent measurements improved the field and recording procedures to produce high quality waveforms from which both P and S arrivals may be visually interpreted. Over a representative section of interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, and coal, Vp and Vs varied considerably even within lithologic units. Compressional wave velocity in the coal seam, Vp = 1,740 m/sec (5,700 ft/sec), was in the range of variability of published data.

The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.

The ballistic pendulum is a well-established piece of test equipment originally developed for estimating the velocity of bullets and projectiles. When trying to understand the effects of different tamping methods on explosive performance, the ballistic pendulum is an excellent tool allowing calculation of explosive charge impulse. Most ballistic pendula for this application are limited to narrow impulse ranges as the pendulum mass determines the angle of swing; and a mass capable of being moved by a small charge would be far too small for a larger charge. This paper describes a modular design (the Alford Modular Ballistic Pendulum) which overcomes this problem.

IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.

The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.

When compared to average shale composition, average coal is enriched in sulfur and selenium, has similar amounts of arsenic, beryllium, lead, antimony and molybdenum, and is depleted in at least 26 other elements. Within a coalfield, or region, some coals are enriched (10X average shale) in silver, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, germanium, molybdenum, nickel, lead, selenium, uranium, and zinc. Important factors controlling element distributions in coal include geochemical conditions (primarily pH) in the peat swamp, composition and depositional environment of coal roof rocks, thermal maturity (rank), nature and intensity of any epigenetic mineralization, composition of ground waters that come in contact with the coal, and degree of weathering.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied mineral resources of the Dragoon Mountains Unit, Coronado National Forest (54,264 ac), Cochise County, AZ. This study involves literature and field investigations with a focus on mine and prospect sites, which were inventoried and mapped; maps are contained in this report. Rock-chip samples were taken from mineralized zones and from some mine dumps; assays of the 477 samples are in appendixes. Mineral deposits are genetically and spatially related to Tertiary-age granitic intrusive activity. Most metallic mineral deposits are also strongly fault-controlled. Colored marble resources (270,000 st) are valued at approximately $6.5 million, if all were to be developed and sold as landscaping material in the form of-marble chips. However, with current demand, it is unlikely that regional markets could absorb all this material. Economic modeling of copper-zinc-silver skarns suggests none would be profitable to mine and capitalize at early 1993 commodity prices, mainly due to the small estimated size of the deposits (30,000 st to 40,000 st maximum). In the entire Unit, 140,000 st of inferred subeconomic skarn resources were estimated by USBM on five different skarn trends; measured subeconomic resources are negligible. Exploration by industry, 1992, was small-scale (on 2 skarn trends and 1 auriferous fault zone).

The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. This paper discusses the outcome of the circuit audit, multicomponent analysis, circuit simulations, improvement strategies and quantification of the improvements. The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making; and (3) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation. This is the second7j of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Indiana County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Smicksburg, Punxsutawney, Elders Ridge, Indiana, Barnesboro, Latrobe, New Florence, and Johnstown Quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each Quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. "Underground mine rib stability is an ongoing safety issue in all mining applications. Rib-related accidents present at least as many problems as roof-related ground control. Underground coal mine rib safety is continually emphasized as a primary safety concern at every mining operation. The application of rib support materials is increasing as more difficult mining conditions are experienced due to deeper cover, more variable depositional environments, thicker seam heights, and multi-seam mining effects. As the coal seams become thicker, the need for rib control increases. A variety of rib control methodologies has been documented and research continues on mine design methods and support techniques to reduce or eliminate rib-related accidents.This paper presents an alternative rib bolting technology using proven conventional rib support systems that allows mine personnel to more efficiently install rib support during development operations. This alternative rib bolting method allows for additional rib support with a single support installation.INTRODUCTIONRib control continues to garner the watchful eye of both concerned operators and government officials due to many factors: inherent safety within entries and crosscuts, actual rib stability history, safety improvement, cost control, improved mining methods, and maintaining production goals. As demonstrated through many years of actual practice, desired outcomes can be achieved by scrutiny, innovation, and combining improved practice methodologies.Rib surface control continues to be a necessary part of the production process. However, production and safety issues persist at the point of installation using current control apparatuses and methods to install rib controls. Among others, current issues of rib control are quantity of bolts required, overall time required for installation, ease of apparatus installation, flexibility of the system for appendage installation and operator exposure. A need exists to decrease the time miners spend installing rib control apparatuses, while increasing the safety of such installation processes. At present, installing rib control devices (primary rib bolts, plates, mesh, and, in most cases, secondary rib bolts and plates) is performed in a very congested area and is time-consuming process at the primary coal-winning area: the face. The MatLok system addresses these problems."
