"For the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe in vanadium-titanium magnetite in the process of pre-reduction-electric furnace smelting, it is expected that vanadium oxide is reduced into molten iron and titanium oxide is available in the slag. Thus the effect of slag basicity, the content of MgO, MnO and CaF 2 of slag content on the separation of slag and molten iron and the comprehensive recovery of V, Ti, Fe were investigated. The results show that increasing slag basicity, MgO, MnO and CaF2 are all beneficial to the separation of slag and molten iron. Higher slag basicity and the addition of CaF2 strengthen the reduction of vanadium oxide, and inhibite the reduction of titanium oxide, which are in favour of the recovery ofV and Ti. However, the addition ofMgO, MnO was not efficient for the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe. For the vanadium-titanium magnetite of Panxi in China, the recovery of Fe was over 98%, the recovery ofV in molten iron was over 85% and the Ti02 content in slag was about 43% under the optimal conditions of slag phase type.IntroductionIt is well known that there are abundant vanadium-titanium magnetite resources which are located in Panzhihua of Sichuan Province[!]. At present the vananium-titanium magnetite concentrates are smelted in the blast furnace, which just make use of iron and vanadium, but lots of titanium is discarded in the slag. At the same time, the process has a large number of disadvantages, such as low recovery of vanadium, long route, pollutions, large investment and expenditure of energy[2-3]. In recent years, in order to efficiently utilize the vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrates, several new non-blast furnace processes have been proposed, such as pre-reduction-electric furnace, pre-reduction-grinding separation and so on[4]. The 'Hall-Heroult' Process of reduction of Alumina to Aluminium has remainded basically the same for over 100 years, but the technology has been undergoing drastic changes with respect to selection of materials for Cathode and Anode, and also energy consumption. The latest generation pots have a working life of about 1800-2000 days normally. After the failure of the pots, the Cathode Lining is dug out and disposed of on land. Since the lining contains objectional materials causing pollution, various processes have been tried for re-processing of this waste. However, most of the processes have been unsuccessful from the techno-economic point of view. At Hindalco a new chemical process for converting the fluorine values of the dug out material to Cryolite was developed in 1988 and a" one ton per day Cryolite production plant has been operating since 1989. This process is especially applicable where the integrated Alumina and Smelter Plants exist side by side. The experience in operating this Plant is discussed in detail in the paper.

"In this paper, a mobile heat treatment furnace from Akkermans Gloeitechniek, a Dutch company, was simulated with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The furnace is cylindrical with four oil burners, and large metal products such as dredging pumps and impellers can be flexibly heat treated to obtain required microstructure and mechanical properties through stress relief, annealing, hardening and tempering. The furnaces are exposed to the open air, and thus the heat loss becomes significant and varies from day to day and from season to season. Since the temperature of the metal products to be heat treated can only be measured on the surface, the temperature evolution inside the metal could not be tracked in practice. CFD simulation provides a useful tool to predict the temperature evolution within the metal pieces and within the combustion space of the furnace. Energy distribution and heat loss can be subsequently estimated. An overall energy balance through temperature measurement indicted relatively low energy efficiency. Especially during the soaking period, the high energy supplied is barely used to compensate the heat loss of the furnace to maintain a constant temperature of the metal piece. The current CFD modeling aims to give advice on how to modify the design and optimize the operation to reach higher energy efficiency and low heat loss. The CFD model consists of turbulent combustion model, radiation model in participating media, and conjugate heat transfer between the combustion space and solid metal. Temperature measurement was carried out to provide thermal boundary conditions and overall energy balance of the operation. After the model validation with temperature measurement within the combustion space and metal surfaces, furnace optimization will be conducted.IntroductionHeat treatment is a common practice in metal production and manufacturing industries. The design criteria for the transformer, electrodes, refractories and associated equipment is presented. The operation of the furnace including chaJ:9ing, bullion tapping, slag tapping, ventilation, slag composition, metal recoveries, and toxic leach results of thra.1 away slag are discussed. Flow charts and the equipment specifications are given.

"In the current trend toward thicker aluminium plates, a major concern is the stress build-up during quenching which causes distortions during machining. Indeed, cooling rates are not high enough, especially at the core of such thick plates, to prevent any precipitation and quench induced precipitates lower the hardening potential. Multi-scale modelling is required when predicting macro-scale stresses after quenching for thick heat treatable aluminium components. The reason is the instantaneous strong coupling between phase precipitation at the nano-scale and material hardening due to precipitation or softening owing to solute depletion at the microscale. For thick parts, quenching intensities decrease when going from the skin to the core of the component, thus introducing a gradient of nanostructure and consequently a gradient of mechanical properties. In addition, large thermally induced deformations lead to high macroscale residual stresses although part of them is relaxed by plastic deformation. These stresses have been measured in water quenched thick plates of 7040 and 7449 aluminium alloys using neutron diffraction and layer removal techniques and the results when compared with a thermomechanical finite element model of quenching highlight the influence of precipitation.IntroductionIn the processing route of heat-treatable aluminium alloys (AA), a critical step is quenching from the solutionizing temperature. High cooling rates are desired, as they avoid formation of coarse precipitates, which reduce mechanical properties. Fast quenching, however, cannot be achieved in the centre of thick components, where the quenching rate can be more than one order of magnitude lower than at the surface. The existence of a thermal gradient between core and surface leads to a differential thermal deformation which is accommodated by elastic and plastic deformation to comply with the compatibility of deformation. Whenever the material yields, especially at high temperature when the yield strength is low, residual stress remains after quenching due to the irreversibility of plastic deformation. After quenching, the plates are in a state of residual stress that causes unacceptable distortions during machining and may reduce service life drastically. Since stress relaxation is negligible during ageing treatments [1 ], agehardened aluminium parts are usually stress relieved prior to ageing. This is typically achieved by applying plastic deformation: stretching from 1.5 to 3 % in the rolling direction (L) can reduce the internal stresses by a factor of approximately 10 [2, 3]. However, complex geometries or thicker components like thick sheets require other approaches. Reducing the quenching rate by using boiling water for instance leads to lower residual stresses [1, 4]."

At its Olen site, Union Minière Copper operates a new full-size deposit tank house. A first 200,000 t/y module was commissioned in October 1996, and an additional 130,000 t/y unit started in April 1998. The main objectives of the new tank house project were to produce grade A cathodes starting from anodes with a wide range of compositions and at a minimal operating cost. The tank house uses Isa Process technology. Based on the process parameters agreed upon with MIM, UM Copper developed the basic design and UM Engineering was the in-house contractor for the engineering. The new tank house is equipped with advanced technology polymer concrete cells, automated two-bale cranes and high-capacity machines. The first 200,000 t/y module treats anodes with a more conventional composition at 330 A/m2; the second 130,000 t/y module treats anodes with a high slimes fall (12- 13 kg/t) at current densities up to 285 A/m2. After some teething problems, the new tank house is meeting all set targets. This paper illustrates and comments on the design characteristics and operational results.

This paper describes a one-step thennal-treatment process, developed at Argonne National Laboratory, to remove all organic contaminants from the glass-fiber waste that is generated during the glass-fonning process. The recovcred glass fibers can then be recycled into new glass fibers or new glass products without adversely impacting the operations of the glass industry or the quality of its products. Our process involves shredding the waste to a manageable size and then processing it at temperatures below its melting point to remove the polymeric-coating layer. The glass industry generates more than 60,000 tons of glass-manufacturing waste annually in the glass-forming process alone. Recycling of this waste stream can keep this non-biodegradable waste out of the landfills. In addition, use of recycled glass lowers energy costs, by an average of about $5 per ton as compared to using virgin raw materials to make virgin glass fibers. This process will also reduce the emission of C02 by 17,400 tons a year and it will also reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides. Economic analysis of our process shows a potential payback of less than 2 years.

"The Tusc gold deposit is located along the Carlin Trend approximately 13 kilometers north of Carlin, Nevada and 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Gold Quarry mine. Tusc is one of several structurally controlled oxide gold deposits located along the Good Hope fault within the Maggie Creek subdistrict. Mining commenced in 1994 with an oxide reserve of780,000 troy ounces of gold at an average grade of 1.34 g/t Au. The Good Hope fault forms the southwestern edge of the Schroeder Mountain uplift (also known as the Carlin Window) and juxtaposes carbonate rocks of the Siluro-Devonian Roberts Mountains Formation against siliceous mudstone, siltstone, and silty limestone of the Devonian Rodeo Creek unit. Submicroscopic gold mineralization is disseminated in the Good Hope fault system and in fractured hanging wall carbonate rocks. Wallrock alteration includes silicification, deca!cification, sericitization, and late alunite replacement and veins. All Tusc ore is transported 2.5 kilometers to Gold Quarry for processing. Leach-grade ore (0.2 - 1.7 g/t gold) is placed on the oxide leach pads, and mill-grade ore(> 1.7 g/t gold) is processed through the CIL oxide mill. IntroductionThe Tusc gold deposit is located in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S. A, approximately 13 kilometers north of the town of Carlin and 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Gold Quarry mine (Fig. 1 ). Tusc is one of several open-pit, oxide, gold deposits within the Maggie Creek subdistrict of the Carlin Trend. Tusc is a structurally controlled gold deposit located along the Good Hope fault. Submicroscopic gold mineralization is disseminated in the brecciated and silicified Good Hope fault zone and along intersecting northeast and northwest striking structures."

However, as the furnaces are getting bigger, the requirements of cost, yield, product quality, emissions and security are raised. With the increased expectations, the fundamental knowledge must follow. Within the last 25 years there has been a great effort both in the industry as well as the academic environment to push the limits of this process. This article will show some examples of improvements within fundamental data, reaction mechanisms and emissions over this time period.

Flash reduction of zinc oxides is an alternative, environmentally safe method to leaching and electrowinning for zinc recovery. Zinc and lead are volatilized in a flash reactor, a non-hazardous residue is generated, and the fuel source is inexpensive coal in the flash reduction process. Results from experimental laboratory tests yielded low zinc recovery for this process. Mineralogical and textural characterization of the residues from the flash reduction tests for different feed materials and temperatures were conducted to determine the cause for the low zinc recovery. Reflected light microscopy, cathodoluminescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were utilized in this applied mineralogical research. The original zinc calcine is composed primarily of fine-grained, iron-bearing zincite particles, 25-40 um in diameter, in a porous texture. Pellets processed at 1150°C were found to produce reaction rims of franklinite-magnetite-jacobsite solid solution that are 125-200 um thick and surround cores of unreacted iron-bearing zincite in a Zn-Fe-Si-Ca glass matrix. The reaction rims have subsequently oxidized to form an outer 10 ~m thick rim of hematite. Slags from calcines processed at 1275°C are primarily triangular particles with porous centers, cenospheres, and spheres of iron-bearing zincite, in addition to rectangular particles composed of non-porous franklinite-magnetite solid solution cores with iron-bearing zincite rims. Slag particles from calcine processed at 1200°C are predominantly 100-250 ~m triangular-shaped, spheres, and cenospheres containing fine-grained franklinite and franklinite-magnetite solid solution in an iron-bearing zincite matrix. Slag from calcine processed at 1300°C are also predominantly 1 00-250 um triangular-shaped, spheres, and cenospheres but contain coarser-grained iron-bearing zincite. The zincite in the penets and the slags typically contain 10-20% iron. Based upon these mineralogical observations, it is concluded that the significant amounts of iron in the zincite prevent volatilization of the zinc in the flash reduction process.

Adsorption of gold on activated carbon from gold bromide solutions was examined as a function of pH, particle size, carbon amount, initial gold bromide concentration, bromine concentration, temperature, and various cations and anions. pH did not have any effect below pH=6. Above pH=6, pH had dramatically negative effect. The adsorption results satisfied a first reaction order model. The reaction rate constant was proportional to the inverse of carbon particle radius. It was also proportional to the amount of carbon, and independent of initial gold concentration. Temperature had a very little effect at pH=l. At pH=8, the activation energy was a function of the extent of a reaction, increasing with the extent of a reaction. Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, and Na cations and sulfate, chloride and bromide anions did not have any effect on gold adsorption. Bromine had a very negative effect on gold uptake.

Intelligent manufacturing involves intelligent, product-directed systems that facilitate the on-line, real-time generation of an improving product process cycle. A first step in the journey relates to self-directed systems which have the ability to reason and create their own processing paths in response to varying product and process conditions encountered during the process. This paper discusses an application of self-directed process control in the manufacture of graphite-epoxy laminated composites. An Air Force team involving researchers and production personnel have caused the development of a system now in use at the Air Force Logistic Center at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento CA. The paper discusses results and lessons learned in the process of trying to speed the implementation of research efforts which show significant potential of improving the product quality in less time and at less cost
