INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. In order to continue the advancements made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, closer attention will have to be paid to the increasing number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time. With the increased emphasis on safety training reflected in the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 96-1641, and on MSHA's current focus on the application of Job Safety Analysis, it appears that the acquisition, evaluation, and application of accident and incident data will take on an even greater importance. To manage this large amount of information will require a significant commitment of time and attention on the part of mine training departments. A USBM-sponsored research project is currently being completed at Penn State which focuser on the development of a model training program for mining. The program is based on five distinct steps which represent the coupling of a needs assessment with the program implementation. The five steps are: 1) database analysis, 2) workplace observations, 3) identification of trainable problem areas, 4) a library of training resources, and 6) the implementation of the program. In each of these areas, the microcomputer has proven to be a valuable tool for collecting, analyzing, and presenting accident and incident information. This paper will detail the manner in which microcomputers have been fully integrated into the model training program. Examples of applications at existing mines will also be discussed.

Increased productivity in the US underground coal industry has taxed pre-existing conveyor belt haulage systems. The usual remedies are costly and can disrupt production. A reduction in the belt feeder discharge rate on shuttle car sections results in more uniform loading and reduces spillage vulnerability. An investigation was made to determine the effect, if any, on shuttle car discharge time arising from lower feeder discharge rates. A five-section, underground mine is modeled, and belt spillage is introduced. The sectional feeder discharge rate is progressively lowered until spillage is precluded. At each level, the simulated spillage is measured and compared to the loss in face production. Methods for predicting the loss in face production from lower feeder discharge rates were investigated.

The utilization of high-sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of the 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal more attractive by offering the choice of taking the coal combustion and flue-gas desu furization products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of product disposed of can be minimized In this paper, several such systems are presented The favorable operating conditions of each system are determined in terms of distance and tonnage ranges. For a 90 kt/year (100 thousand stpy) operation, it is found that, up to a distance of 150 km (93 miles), transporting products by truck would be less expensive than using rail cars and intermodal containers. Also, a case study is given in which a cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving products from two Illinois utility plants. At 90 kt/year (100 thousand stpy) and a distance of 40 km (25 miles) between the power plant and the mine, it is found that truck transportation and under ground placement would cost $0.090/tkm ($0.131/st-mile) and $2.98/t ($2.70/ st), respectively.

The paper presents the evaluation method of the thermal power potential of the salt lakes developed in collapsed salt mines in Romania. It is well-known that the hydro-chemical stratification of these lakes favors warmer internal layers. The degree of heat varies during the year, but, taking into account the large number of genetic lakes of this type, it can be used as a local utilizable power source. The authors analyze the correlations between the physico-chemical parameters of the water and the degree of heat stored as a function of the morphological parameters of the lakes, as well as the technical parameters for capitalizing on this power.

"Physical impurity transfer in solvent extraction (SX) has a significant impact on operating costs, electrowinning (EW) performance, and cathode quality. Some operations use a wash stage to limit impurity transfer by diluting the entrained pregnant leach solution (PLS) to prevent direct transfer to EW. Wash stage operating conditions vary impacting impurity transfer. A number of factors impact dilution efficiency including mixer continuity, wash aqueous acidity, and organic quality. The impact of these variables on dilution efficiency was studied and compared to current industry practice. INTRODUCTION With the exception of iron, impurity transfer in copper SX is due to PLS carryover in the loaded organic via aqueous entrainment and crud movement. The quantity of impurity transfer is influenced by many variables including operating set points, organic quality, and settler housekeeping. Crud management and treatment is a common practice aimed at minimizing transfer of impurities to EW. Crud is a complex solid-stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic[9]. As such, it contains a large aqueous component and the associated impurities (from the PLS). A common practice is to remove interfacial crud to prevent movement. Additionally, mixer continuity can be altered to enable compaction and improve the efficiency of interfacial pumping[10]. Understanding the factors impacting aqueous entrainment and optimizing the available controls should be a key focus for any operation. Aqueous entrainment in the loaded organic can be impacted by: • Mixer continuity • Mixer organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio • Mixer speed and impeller type • Organic and aqueous depths • Specific settler flow • Use of settler internals (picket fences, coalescing packs) • Organic quality • Design and operation of loaded organic tanks Conventional thought is to run the E1 mixer in aqueous continuity to reduce aqueous entrainment. Generally, O/A ratios close to 1:1 result in improved metallurgical and physical performance. Mixer speeds should be chosen to achieve acceptable stage efficiencies while minimizing over-mixing. Organic depths can be increased in the E1 stage to increase retention time and minimize aqueous entrainment. Settler internals can also be used, but require maintenance to maintain effectiveness. The quality of the plant organic inventory will impact physical performance. Poor organic quality can lead to higher phase disengagement times increasing impurity transfer to the electrolyte. Additionally, the design and operation of the loaded organic tank can impact impurity transfer[8]. Despite the variables that can be used to reduce aqueous entrainment and crud movement, impurity transfer is still an issue in some operations. For these operations with high PLS impurity concentrations, a wash stage may be beneficial to manage impurity transfer. Understanding factors impacting wash stage performance is important to optimize performance and limit impurity transfer."

Processing of the refractory precious metal ore from the Sunshine Mine is done in a fully integrated hydrometallurgical facility. This operating philosophy began with the construction of an antimony plant during World War 11, and it continued with the construction of a silver-copper refinery in 1984. The antimony plant relies on an alkaline sulfide ambient pressure leach combined with antimony electrowinning and antimony compound production. This plant is the largest producer of antimony metal in the United States. The one-of-a-kind silver- copper refinery uses a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach system. The plant contains innovative downstream silver recovery processes as well as copper solvent extraction and electrowinning. This paper presents the pertinent process chemistries and flow sheets for the two unique hydrometallurgical processing plants.

As discussed previously, total cost is the sum of the direct materials, direct labor, and production overhead costs. The assignment of direct materials and direct labor costs to individual activities is generally straightforward. The assignment of overhead often is not. Overhead costs frequently contain allocations that only approximate the demand the activity has made o; the overhead resources. The inaccuracy of the overhead calculation can create erroneous production cost information and lead to suboptimal management of the operation. This problem is particularly acute when determining the production cost of individual products in multiproduct firms. Pricing, process management, and product mix decisions are especially susceptible to errors in product costing. The problem of properly determining production cost is complicated by the fact that few if any alternative methods exist to identify the inaccuracies in overhead allocation. To avoid errors, some firms simply ignore overhead costs in their product cost calculations, particularly those resulting from marketing and distribution of the final product.

The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach based on deposit-specific information, such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are: • leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, • detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess manganese distribution and leaching efficiencies, • deposit characterization and evaluation, and • development of potential manganese recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau's research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

This paper describes a process which finds the maximum worth of a mineral deposit. The procedure requires two phases. The first uses a microcomputer evaluation model to find the optimum design input, with minimum attention giving to actual mining constraints that might exist. The second phase runs the first-phase design parameters through a direct simulation model on a mainframe computer. In phase one, financial, economic, and geotechnical data are entered; and an idealized list of design parameters is output. The list includes optimum values for cutoff grade, mine life, mine size, paytons, paygrade, and payvalue. In addition, the model generates pro forma operating and cash flow statements and it indicates the maximum net present value (NPV) possible for the deposit along with the probability of that oc¬curring. The initial results imply perfect mining conditions. In phase two, when actual mining selectivity, sequence, and other practical design considerations are related in a direct simulation model to the optimum criteria found above, the maximum NPV invariably decreases. However, if it is still satisfactory (NPV greater than or equal to zero) then the maximum worth/ optimum design have probably been found in the first iteration. If, on the other hand, NPV is now unsatisfactory, then design compromises must be made and simulated, and the results rerun through the evaluation model. If several iterations fail to yield a positive NPV then the deposit is most likely unfeasible t for the forecast economic conditions used in phase one.

A detailed breakdown of capital and operating costs is an essential element in the planning and evaluation of any mining project. The OPCOST System was developed by Golder Associates to provide mining engineers with the facility to synthesize detailed cost estimates for all aspects of an operating or potential open pit mine. The system can also be applied to underground mines equally as well. Such estimates can be prepared at a variety of levels depending on the detail required by the project. The OPCOST System is a suite of computer programs linked through a common hierarchical data base. It simulates the thought and reasoning processes within the quantity takeoff and cost estimation phases of a mining project. The system was developed as a mining cost engineering tool on the basis that it would have to satisfy a variety of purposes, namely:

The general manner in which the liberation function must change during size reduction is described. Data from float-sink (washability) analysis of a coal is used as an illustration, and a Locking Index is defined and calculated. Ash is not distributed equally with respect to sieve size but is concentrated more in the finest sizes. On the other hand, the ash is less locked with coal in the finer sizes than in the larger sizes. Further crushing showed decreased locking in intermediate sizes, but the material in the fine sizes (produced from breakage of highly locked larger sizes) was more locked than material of the same size in the feed. Future work is also discussed.

Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

Geotechnical theory is reasonably well developed to evaluate the stability of rock slopes for surface mining projects. It is recognized widely that structural geology, groundwater pressures and seepage, and blasting are key factors that influence the stability of such slopes. However, our capabilities to model the structural geology, to determine rock strength along discontinuities and to model groundwater pressures and profiles are still very approximate. Plus, practical experience of the rock mechanics engineer is one of the most important inputs to the design of open pit mine slopes. To emphasize the use of practical experience, a number of case examples are reviewed here to illustrate key factors that must be evaluated. These case examples comprise a continuation of other examples presented in the Jackling lecture to the SME in 1986 by the author (Brawner, 1986). Example no. 1 In situations where the orientation of geologic discontinuities will not influence rock slope stability, extremely steep slopes can be developed, providing blasting and groundwater are controlled adequately. An excellent example of this condition is the Republic Pit of Cleveland Cliffs in Michigan. The rock slope in Fig. 1 isover400fthigh with a face angle of approximately 80". The rock is hard and massive, and blasting was carefully controlled. The original design of this slope was at45", a standard design angle at that time. The competency of the rock and the lack of critical geologic structure subsequently was recognized, and the much steeper slope angle was developed successfully. The rock proved to be so competent and the slope sufficiently stable that an underground crusher station was developed with entrance and exit tunnels excavated at the toe of the steep wall.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to measure the improvement provided by fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20-um size) in an effort to improve flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the flotation cell were measured as a function of time and position and used to increase the precision of a fine particle, turbulent flotation model. For the mineral system investigated, improved flotation response was obtained under laboratory conditions by using small bubbles and intense agitation. These results matched the model's predicted response.

Introduction Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, numerous developments have taken place in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991). Mesh selection methods A procedure for mine ventilation network solution based on mesh equations typically consists of two steps: • the mesh selection step and • the network solution step. The mesh selection step establishes a set of independent equations to solve the network. The resulting equations are nonlinear. One method of solving nonlinear equations is to linearize the equations and iteratively solve these linear equations. The four analysis methods previously discussed in this paper use this approach. The linear equations required for solution can be written in matrix form as: P•dQ = dF (1) where P is the pseudo-resistance matrix, Q is the quantity matrix, and F is the Jacobian matrix (Kim and Mutmansky, 1991). The efficiency of the solution method depends on the characteristics of the P matrix, which in turn depend on the method of selecting meshes. To understand the impacts of the mesh selection methods on the efficiency of the ventilation network analysis procedures, the characteristics of the P matrix must be understood first. The diagonal elements of the P matrix, m in number, are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches contained in the m meshes necessary for solution. The off-diagonal elements are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two meshes. For example, P12 (first row, second column element of the P matrix) is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches common to mesh 1 and mesh 2. When solving the system of equations expressed in Eq. (1), three of the iterative procedures (the Newton-Raphson, the linear theory and the second-order approximation methods) use the direct factorization method (Burden and Faires, 1985) on the P matrix. When the direct factorization method is used, the computational efficiency is enhanced by larger diagonal elements and a sparser P matrix. Generally, the sparsity of the P matrix is more important than the size of the diagonal elements. There is no known mathematical method of predicting the efficiency of these procedures, but heuristic methods can be used to study the efficiency. The Hardy Cross algorithm applies the Gauss-Seidel method of splitting the P matrix and applies the Newton-Raphson procedure. The efficiency of the Hardy Cross method depends on the spectral radius of the matrix[[D-L]-1U], where D is the diagonal, L is the lower triangle and U is the upper triangle of the P matrix for the Newton-Raphson method (Ortega, 1972). The smaller the value of the spectral radius, the faster the convergence. As with the other three methods, larger diagonal elements and a sparser matrix aid in faster convergence. With the Hardy Cross method, however, the size of the diagonal elements is more important than the sparsity of the matrix. Remembering that each of the diagonal elements of the P matrix is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches in a mesh and that each off-diagonal element is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two different meshes, the following strategies can be used: • Avoid having branches with larger resistance values shared by multiple meshes. This increases the size of the diagonal elements and reduces the chance of off-diagonal elements being large.

Eighty samples from Roman wall paintings from ancient Corinth were studied by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy coupled to an energy dispersive analyzer, X-ray diffraction and image analysis techniques. The goals of the study were the identification of the exact nature of the pigments and the technical features of paint application (binding medium, adherence to plaster, thickness of the pigment layer), which would provide evidence about the painting technique (fresco or secco). The main plaster is calcitic with secondary calcite as a cement binder to the primary calcite grains. All pigments, except Egyptian Blue, were naturally occurring ochres or pigment minerals, such as limonite, goethite, hematite for yellow, brown and red hues, cinnabar for red hues and celadonite for green color. The presence of specific elements such as Ni and Cr or minerals such as olivine, in the yellow, brown and red pigments, gave an indication about the provenance of the original pigments, which seems to be from Cyprus. The black color was represented using charcoal. It seems, finally, that for the pigment application the fresco technique was used, while secco is also apparent.

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1).
