The importance of fluorspar to the United States and the world and the role it plays in industry and society extend far beyond that which is suggested by its measured production and consumption quantities and declared value. Compared to many other industrial minerals, the annual worldwide consumption of 5 million short tons valued at less than $500 million are not impressive figures. Fluorspar is made special primarily because of its status as a critical and strategic commodity; it is essential for the processing of most steels and all aluminum. It also is the raw material for the production of elemental fluorine, which plays a part in uranium refining.

Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. Remarks of Aurel Goodwin, Chief, Division of Health, Metal and Nonmetal Mine Safety and Health, Mine Safety and fEealth Administration, U. S. Department of Labor, before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME, Littleton, Colorado, on October 18, 1979. I appreciate this opportunity to speak before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. The topic of my presentation is the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA) concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals - the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals which possess a fiber like structure capable of being woven, like and into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps made about 430 B.C. with incombustible wicks of "Carpathian flax." The Romans used asbestos as cremation clothes to conserve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (1). Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Bath wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages.

Introduction and Historical Background State Geological Surveys have been deeply involved in industrial minerals from their inception beginning in the first half of the 19th Century. To Massachusetts belongs the credit of having carried out the first Geological survey under state auspices on the Western Hemisphere. One of the causes leading up to this survey was. Governor Lincoln's message to the legislature of May 29, 1830, from which I quote in part: "Much knowledge of the natural history of the country would thus be gained (from a geological survey), and especially the presence of valuable ores, with the localities and extent of quarries and of coal and lime formations, objects of inquiry so essential to internal improvements and the advancement of domestic prosperity, would be discovered.". Similar phraseology is present in practically all of the initial organic acts creating the first State Surveys. High on the list of priorities for these embryo surveys was an inventory of the mineral resources of the State with particular emphasis on the industrial minerals. Prom these early beginnings, the state surveys have developed a great wealth of geological data either directly or indirectly relating to the development of mineral resources. One can gain some conception of the effort that state surveys today place on industrial minerals studies by noting the projects in which they are engaged as reported in the State Geologists Journal. In recent years public concern over the environment has grown enormously. A very aware populace has exerted pressure on its legislators to enact enforcement laws dealing with pollution. Among the different types of pollution, sulfur dioxide in the air is a large and readily identifiable constituent. Air pollution, according to the EPA, costs the U, S. billions annually with SO2 a major portion of this cost. Fossil fuel and oil fired power plants release better than 50% of the SO2 in the country. Thus great attention is being focused on the methods power plants are utilizing to control emissions. With a time schedule of compliance by early 1975, decisions are being made and systems chosen that will have to perform - and perform - and perform. Therefore, a large majority of the power plants are presently considering lime in the planning and operational phases of their stack gas desulfurization programs. The reasons for this are: Lime scrubbing has more development and pilot work completed than most other methods; the removal potentials are relatively high; the stoichiometric ratios are not excessive and, the process has relatively low capital and operating costs. Many pilot plant studies have been completed recently using lime and the first operational full scale lime scrubbing unit is now in the start-up phase at this time at Duquesne Light Company's Phillips Station here in Pittsburgh. Also, because of completed development work, the problem of solid waste disposal will also be tackled at this power station at the same time. There are various methods for the use of lime in scrubbing for S02, but for our purposes I would like to describe the cyclic wet lime process. This method called "Scrubber Addition of Lime" involves contacting the flue gas with a slurry of milk of lime.

Assumptions about future commodity prices need to be made with close regard to the purposes for which they are being used. Prices generated for financial planning or trading purposes are unlikely to be suitable for the longer run purposes of project evaluation and reserve estimation. In this latter context, price assumptions need to be realistic, stable and rooted in a rigorous fundamental analysis of long run industry drivers. Amongst the factors to be considered in such analysis are price history, production costs and structural dynamics. It is also important that prices adopted are consistent with other information being used by a company in its decision-making.

INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam's operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer's Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer's Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. A typical section through the maximum height of the starter dam is shown on Figure 3. A small confining dam, approximately 1.6 meters (5 feet) high, is constructed beyond the limits

Since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro and the publication of the agenda 21, the concept of Sustainable Development has become one of the major issues for governmental politics, societal developments and entrepreneurial policies. Current projects that deal with Sustainable Development in the mineral raw materials sector mainly focus on large-scale mining operations - especially for open pit mining - or on artisanal small scale mining. Artisanal small scale mining is in this connexion characterised as non-mechanized and mostly illegal mining activities. The number of workers is mostly far below 20. However, until now there exist no assessments or analyses with respect to the actual or potential contribution of industrial small scale mining to sustainable development. Industrial small scale mining refers to high technology or highly mechanized/automated extraction of small, high-grade deposits that due to their small size ? in combination with geological, depth and other constraints ? are not economically exploitable with large-scale mining operations. The Institute of Mining Engineering I and the Institute for Processing of Mineral Raw Materials at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany is currently conducting a research project financed by the German Research Foundation in order to investigate this issue. In the course of this project the sustainability of industrial small scale mining will be assessed. Therefore sustainability indicators, an assessment system and recommendations as well as options for actions and policies will be developed, in order to evaluate current industrial small scale mining activities as well as the potential for future developments in industrial small scale mining, both from a technological as well as from the point of view of sustainability, considering economical, social and environmental chances and risks.

In this study, the formation of zeolites around Kizkapan and Karlikoy villages (Sothwest Kesan) were investigated. In this region, stratigrafically, Upper Eocene Kesan Formation, i.e. sandstone and rarely shale are observed at the bottom. Early Middle-Oligocene Yenimuhacir Formation is composed of sandstone, marl and tuffs. The zeolitisation is determined in the dasitic tuffs of the Yenimuhacir Formation. In this tuffs' zone, alteration had primarily resulted in zeolites, mainly mordenite, heulandite-clinoptiIolite. Silicification and alteration to clay minerals are also common. The Miocene-Pliocene Ergene Formation and alluvium deposits are the top units in the area. In the studied area, zeolite occurences have economic importance. The results show that successively rapid and short term periods are responsible for the clinoptilolite-heuylandite formations. The homogene chemistry of the solutions may be evaluated for a possible successive zeolitisation period. Multi-periodic vocanic activity and also circulation of thermal water had resulted in a continous dissolution of volcanic glass; moreover, resulted in the formation of suitable conditions of zeolite formation. The mineral crystallization sequences and alteration products as zeolites within the wall-rock, circulated solution reaction depends on a serie of parameters such as chemical composition of both initial materials and volcanic solutions during rock¬solution interaction period. The previous researches and the chemical studies support our results and observations in the studied area. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of zeolitisation and to explain the formation steps of zeolitisation in Kesan Area by considering the content and distribution of major and minor elements determined in zeolite bearing tuffs. The chemical structures of both zeolite bearing volcanics and zeolite minerals are compared to the results of previous studies. Two dimentional behaviours of major and minor elements were discussed in order to caracterize zeolitisation development and to postulate a probable formation type of zeolitic alteration.

When blasts are designed, the assumption is made that all blastholes release near ideal energy. In many types of mining operations, some blastholes release very little useful energy. These blastholes will be called malfunctioning blastholes. Recent studies indicate that on many types of blasting applications, 30 percent of blastholes are malfunctioning. This malfunctioning routinely occurs on the operation and is not an unusual occurrence. This paper will discuss the cause of malfunctioning blastholes and methods to minimize the detrimental effect on both safety and costs.

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. By way of background. it is important to keep in mind that the information presented in this paper relates specifically to synthetically produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers. Natural calcium carbonate fillers manufactured by grinding limestone, marble and chalk, though having similar chemical and physical analyses to PCCs, normally contribute somewhat different performance properties in paint, paper and polymer systems. Many factors have been cited and numerous theories have been proposed for the observed differences. Particle size parameters, surface chemistry and particle morphology are the items most frequently mentioned. A discussion of this subject is beyond the scope of this paper.

The accurate determination of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes is of increasing interest to Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) gold extraction operations as cyanide consumption is an important economic factor in the processing of complex ores. Characteristically complex ores are high cyanide consumers and these ores usually contain a range of sulfide minerals e.g. covellite (CuS), digenite (Cu1,S), chalcocite (Cu, S), Pyrrhotite (Feci-x)S), marcasite (FeS2), arsenic and antimony sulfides and zinc sulfide. These minerals can consume significant quantities of cyanide, e.g. various copper(!) cyanide complexes such as CuCN, Cu(CN)2·, Cu(CN)/ and Cu(CN)/ can form, depending on the cyanide to copper ratio in solution. Measurement of free and complexed cyanide is thus a prerequisite for efficient cyanide dosage control. Free cyanide can be determined potentiometrically or amperometrically but the methods are prone to error and are laborious [1]. Metal cyanide complexes can be determined by reverse phase HPLC, however, the species ofa single cation (e.g. Cu(CN)i-, Cu(CN);2 and Cu(CN)/) elute as one species [2]. Additionally the high amount of suspended matter in CIP leach solutions tends to introduce errors. Raman spectroscopy has the potential to be used as an in­line or on-line method of analysis. Free cyanide and the cyanides of gold, silver, copper and iron have been studied in aqueous alkaline solutions with a view to developing such a method. Spectra were obtained with a Bruker RFSl00 FT-Raman spectrometer using a 1064 nm laser delivering 800 mW of power at the sample. Depending on the solution, 250, 1000 or 4000 scans at 4 cm-1 resolution were accumulated. The cyanide stretches observed were relatively narrow (10 15 cm-1 full width at half height) and well resolved (Figure 1 ).

Ore blending for process optimization is becoming an increasing factor for managing cost and productivity. Economic mining and processing a very low value ore in an extremely competitive market results in constant cost-cummng initiatives. The inherent conflict between the lowest possible mining cost and the lowest possible milling cost is reviewed here in the context of blasting for autogenous mills. Iron ore blending focuses on a number of properties-liberation values, weight recovery and concentrate silica being the most important. Other chemical and metallurgical factors are also commonly controlled. Recent research has fueled an emerging interest in blending on physical ore properties as well. Fully autogenous mills rely on the large, competent fraction of crushed feed to act as grinding media. Previous test work indicated that Hibtac mills require specific amounts of 6- to 10-inch ore. High recirculating loads require a steady influx of large rock fragments. Blast designs, therefore, are presently characterized by wide patterns and low powder factors. Current efforts are aimed at improving mill throughput while reducing overall energy costs. Based on research and published case studies and the advent of optical measuring devices, Hibbing Taconite Company has embarked on a blast optimization program to identify optimum mill feed and to design blast fragmentation goals for each geological unit and each mining area. This paper outlines the preliminary findings of an ongoing, broad-based team effort which requires close cooperation of geologists, mine engineers, crushing and milling personnel. Three specific areas of investigation are reviewed: I) Historical relationships between powder factor and mill performance, 2) Blast fragmentation modeling using the Kuz-Ram model, and 3) Drill

Coal mining is one of the major sources of methane release to the atmosphere by human industrial activities and is believed to contribute to -30% of the total methane emissions from industrial activities. In 1993, world saleable black coal production, attained almost 3.5 billion tonnes from which around 65% was produced underground. Coal in underground mines can contain high quantities of methane and some deep coal seams have methane content as high as 50 cubic meters per tonne of coal. Gas is re- leased during coal mining from the mined seam and in a higher degree from the neighboring unmined seams and gas bearing strata which are fractured as mining advances. This paper de- scribes a study which was undertaken to estimate the extent of methane emissions from coal mining in the world. Measured emission related data were collected from most underground coal producing countries in the world. The data included methane flows in the ventilation system, methane flows in gas drainage system, in-situ gas content, methane utilization and coal production. More comprehensive data were collected from a range of gassy and non-gassy Australian mines. Residual gas content of samples from run of mine were also measured. Using the Australian data, mathematical expressions were established to evaluate methane emissions as a function of coal production and in-situ gas content for other mines. These emission models were then used to evaluate the emissions for the countries or coal basins without measured emission data. Trends in methane emissions from underground mining for the year 2000 and beyond were also estimated.

Production In 1993, it was estimated that United States mine production of barite increased 24%. Barite consumption, either sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 39% and imports increased 4%, according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 80% of the total, followed by Georgia. It is estimated that 83% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 17% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Prices The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 1%, according to the USBM. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1993 decreased from $40.09/t ($36.37/st) in 1992 to $37.72/t ($34.22/st). Uses Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals, fillers in paper, plastics, brake shoes and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1993. The average number of rotary rigs operating in the United States was 754, 5% greater than the 1992 average of 717. Imports Crude barite imports in 1993 were 443 kt (488,000 st) greater than 1992, representing an increase of 137%. Imports accounted for 67% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States.

With increased CO2 emissions from steel and coal industry, there is great opportunity to capture CO2 and utilize the captured CO2 for economic advantage. The primary goal is to develop energy-efficient processes that reductively couple CO2, an abundant and renewable carbon source, for the production of value-added chemicals such as methanol, ethanol, and oxalic acid. These chemicals can be used elsewhere in the refining process or sold as valuable by-products. Geological sequestration, in comparison, has no economic return. Current CO2 utilization research at Michigan Technological University focuses on electrochemical reduction of CO2. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. This paper will present different ideas and their viability to utilize CO2 as a feedstock to produce several value-added compounds. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere will need to be drastically reduced to curb the various undesirable effects of climate change. The large contribution in total CO2 emission originates from coal or natural gas power plants, and a considerable amount from steel plants. Average CO2 emissions in the US from steel industry is 2.9t CO2/t steel (Global CCS Institute 2013). Capturing the available CO2 from the steel and coal industries for economic advantage is a win-win situation for the industry. This technology is not only important scientifically but is also vital for a sustainable future. The various ongoing investigations can be categorized as biochemical, thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemical approaches. Among these, the electrochemical method shows the most promise as an efficient form of CO2 conversion technology, because of its many advantages like high reactivity under ambient conditions and good extensibility from small- to large-scale processes1 BACKGROUND Extensive research has been done on the chemistry of transforming carbon dioxide into more useful products. Methods are known to convert carbon dioxide into a wide variety of substances, including methanol, isobutanol, carbohydrates, methane, carbonates, urea, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide, epoxides, formaldehyde, and so on. Several of these (carbohydrates, formaldehyde, isobutanol etc.) are primarily results from biological processes. The rest are results of strong reduction reactions or electrolytic reduction. In short, electrolytic reduction can be used to form methane, methanol, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide2. CO2 reduces at the cathode in an electrolysis cell. These processes have the general form of generating the carbon dioxide anion radical (2⋅−) and allowing it to react with itself or the electrolyte3. Catalysts can be added to influence the formation of the anion radical or to suppress side reactions3. The electrolyte, catalyst, voltage, electrode material and CO2 content are all known to effect the reaction pathway. Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. Gravity based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets; but, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grab-sample on-the-spot sink-float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is both serious economic as well as environmental losses. While the economic losses are obvious, less obvious environmental losses, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. A control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has until recently escaped technology.
