"INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The lower ore grades [2] in the past couple of decades have demanded an increase on power size and efficiency of process machines to maintain a competitive plant throughput; Hydro-cyclone feed pumps to control both under and over milling or grinding are not the exception; Fig. 1 shows a conventional drive train [3] comprising an (1) asynchronous motor (also known as squirrel cage induction motor = SCIM), a high speed coupling (2), a gear reducer (3) and a low speed coupling (4) attached to the shaft of the pump (5), to accommodate the motor rated speed (typically 1800 rpm) to the process requirements (in the range of 250 rpm to 350 rpm), requiring additional components related to the gearbox: instrumentation, maintenance, disposable lubricants and filters, spare parts, thus reduces the overall system efficiency ultimately reflected into CAPEX and OPEX.WHY VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES FOR CYCLONE FEED PUMPS Hydrocyclones or commonly referred as “cyclones” are one of the most important devices in the minerals industry [4]; almost universally used in close-circuit grinding because of their high capacity and relative efficiency, the evolution of Power Electronics made affordable the use of Medium Voltage - Variable Frequency Converters (VFC) for Cyclone Feed pumps in combination with induction motors larger than 500hp (373kW) to gain multiple benefits: - Soft start with minimum electrical utility disturbance = inrush current mitigation - Full Torque available at zero speed for overload startup with pulp solidification after long still stand periods, superior to any other reduced voltage starting method. - Optimum and constant pump speed (independent of the electrical network or load condition), compared to across the line SCIM operation - Flexible Motor Voltage and Speed regardless of the power distribution Voltage and Frequency - Improved Power Factor (close to unitary), over the entire operating speed range"

Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits. From the beginning of the century up to the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, not less than the following figures were extracted of some Cuban minerals: Refractory Chromium 3,300,000t Manganese 7,650,000 t Copper 9,000,000 t Iron 22,000,000 t Nickel 150,000 t (Ni oxide and sulphide These productions were practically directed to cover the demands of the U.S., industry and some-times these Cuban ores were almost the sole suppliers of the market.

An open pit mining operation can be considered as a production system with at least two products: ore and overburden (waste). A primary mine planning task is to schedule the production of ore and waste over its life span subject to several technical and economic constraints to maximize some objective such as the overall profit from the operation. Two major constraints are (i) the feasible combinations of ore and waste productions and (ii) the limiting function for ore production as a function of mine life. The task in scheduling production and stripping ratio (ratio of waste to ore production) is to find an ore production curve below the upper bound function of ore production, and a stripping ratio curve within the feasible domain of ore production and overburden removal while maximizing the defined objective. Zn this paper, feasibility of developing computerized optimization models to perform such a scheduling process is explored. Two optimization models are proposed for the task. In the first approach, a linear programming (LP) model is employed and in the second, a dynamic programming procedure (DP) is outlined. In these models, in addition to the consideration of the two major constraints mentioned earlier, various other contributing factors such as interest rate, equipment purchase cost and installation schedule, operating cost, and equipment idle cost are incorporated. An example is provided to illustrate the LP model application.

Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold losses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

ShouSteel Mining Ltd., a subsidiary of ShouSteel (Group) Co., was founded in 1959 and is located in QianAn City in Hebei Province, China. ShouSteel?s pelletizing plant uses iron ore as a raw material combined with limestone, dolostone, or olivine, with bentonite as a binder. After mixing the raw materials and forming them into small, spherical balls, ShouSteel then fires pellets in kilns for hardening. The company sells the finished pellets as raw materials for blast furnaces used to produce industrial metals such as iron. ShouSteel?s handling capacity is approximately 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy) of ore. The company?s production capacity is 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of oxide pellets and 560 Mt (650 million st) of sinters. Until recently, ShouSteel Mining had not replaced its electronic scales in its series of ingredient chambers. Because of the wear and tear on these older scales, the weighing system began to encounter regular problems. The company experienced a high failure rate from the integrator, an unstable signal, weak anti-interference ability and low accuracy. ShouSteel also found that spare parts required during repairs were consistently high in cost and that system calibration was becoming increasingly frequent.

By mechanizing the adjustment procedure, personnel are removed from the line of fire, and the accuracy of axial movement is increased,” said Ron Bourgeois, director of slurry pumping technology group for Weir Minerals."

The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach is a relatively new method to study the mechanical behavior of rock masses. Recently, an SRM approach was established to estimate pillar strength from laboratory scale to in-situ dimension using the two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). In this study, the developed methodology is applied to the S-Pillar database to estimate pillar strength and failure mechanisms as a function of width-to-height ratio of the pillars. First, stone mine rocks are categorized into three as low-, medium-, and high-strength according to their uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Later, laboratory-scale intact rocks are scaled-up to the average in-situ pillar dimensions by explicitly considering the naturally existing joint sets. It is found that the strength of the pillars with low-UCS are overestimated when compared to pillars with high-UCS. This observation is attributed to the high joint density of the pillars with high-UCS. After obtaining in-situ pillar strength, the width-to-height ratios of the pillar models varied from 0.5 to 2.0 to gain a robust understanding of pillar mechanical behavior. Tensile failure is found to govern the pillar behavior with the width-to-height ratio of 0.5 while the combination of tensile failure in rib elements and shear failure in the core

The operation is unique because it is integrated into the main process stream of the copper circuit The plant processes 1408 m3/h of copper solutions containing about 10 mg/L of uranium. The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. Discussion by J.L. Weeks Discussion I wish to comment on Kissell and Sacks's paper "Inaccuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines." It is well established in industrial hygiene that area sampling is not an accurate measure of personal exposure. To measure personal exposure, one must use a personal sampler. Kissell and Sacks, using data from coal mining, reached the same conclusion. This is the right answer but it is the wrong question. This issue arises because the machine-mounted respirable dust continuous monitor (MMRDCM) is being considered to monitor coal-miners' exposure to respirable dust. This device may be mounted on a continuous mining machine, and it would take a modified area sample. I refer to it as "modified" because a mining machine is not really a fixed location, as is the typical area sample. The concern with whether this machine would provide an accurate estimate of the machine-operator's exposure, however, overlooks important features of the MMRDCM. Specifically, it displays dust concentration as it occurs and at the place where it is needed, not 10 days later, as is the case with the current system. Used in this way, it allows for timely intervention to control exposure to dust and it leads to greater first-hand knowledge of specific conditions and mining practices that result in excess exposure. If one knows the dust level is excessive at the time the dust is being generated, it is possible to use known and effective methods of dust control to reduce exposure. By measuring again, one can determine whether control methods have worked. This is a generic procedure followed in any industrial process: measure, adjust and measure again. It leads to more effective and more efficient dust control and is preferred to taking a sample, waiting 10 days for the results and then trying to apply that information to a situation that no longer exists. The MMRDCM also records the dust level automatically, and it runs continuously, making it harder to tamper with. Dust monitoring in underground coal mines has been corrupted by some operators having submitted fraudulent samples (and being convicted on criminal charges because of it), weakening the credibility of the current system. The MMRDCM is, in part, a response to this corruption, and an effort to focus attention on dust levels and dust controls rather than on the perpetrators of fraud. Use of the MMRDCM is an evolutionary change from the current system. With the current system, one takes a personal sample of exposure of the "designated occupation" (DO, defined at 30 CFR 70.2 (f)), the occupation regularly exposed to the highest level of dust on a section. Typically, on sections using continuous mining machines, this is the mining-machine operator. The rationale behind DO sampling rests on some of the findings that Kissell and Sacks report. They reviewed several studies that showed that dust concentration varies with location on a mining section and that there is a concentration gradient with the highest concentration occurring closest to the face. The logic behind DO sampling strategy is that if the dust concentration at the place where it is highest is below the exposure limit, then concentration elsewhere on the section is also below the limit. In this way, one will have achieved the objective or keeping dust concentration below the exposure limit for all miners on the section by measuring the exposure of only one miner. The

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem in mining activities. Prediction is the first step for evaluate the potential of acid generation and there are some possible methods to estimate it. They are described as static tests, which examine the balance between acid producing and acid consuming materials, and kinetic tests, which attempt to predict drainage quality over time. Static methods are very simple and give a qualitative classification of the ores based on their potential to generate acid drainage. The characterization of ores to determine their acid producing potential is vital for the prevention of long term environmental liabilities. Laboratory tests were conducted under different methodologies to predict the acid producing potential of sulphide overburden, ore materials and tailings from a deposit of copper ore.

The Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) has been an advocate for the U.S. mining industry since 1895. For several decades, the organization has represented mining members located mostly in the Northwest and some southwestern Canadian provinces. Today, though, the NWMA?s membership is located in 42 states and seven provinces and has become a national voice for the mining industry. So, during the association?s 119th and final meeting as the NWMA, a name change was announced. The organization is now called the American Exploration and Mining Association (AEMA). But that?s not all that has changed, according to the association. The new name reflects more closely the diversity and location of the AEMA?s membership. It will still be an advocate for the mining industry, dealing with land, environmental and community issues on state and federal levels. The conference, held in December 2013 in Reno, NV, attracted about 2,500 attendees. And the accompanying exhibit included 230 equipment and service suppliers in 246 booths. Technical programming ran the gamut of mining industry issues and technologies, including surface and underground mining; high technology systems and automation in mining, metallurgy and exploration; along with social issues, finance and safety. The following is a sample of some of the sessions.

The cooling water system for the Seabrook Nuclear Station involves 10.25 Km (33,623 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) OD hard rock tunnels, over one third of which is under and terminating over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The major excavation is accomplished by two TBM's concurrently driving the intake and discharge tunnels which by mid-January, 1981, completed 92% of the excavation. This paper presents the case history of the excavation work and describes a computer program developed to evaluate major activities of TBM excavation on a shift-by-shift basis. Details and summaries of the production efforts are computer plotted in different forms to facilitate the evaluation of production performance, trouble spots and trends.

Lead and zinc have been mined for over 90 years in parts of the Lower Benue rift in southeastern Nigeria. However, there has been little interest in the sustainability of the environment and the inhabitants of the host communities. Adverse effects include soil and food crop contamination, lack of education, poor healthcare, unemployment, and no access to potable water. This work suggests practicable mitigation strategies to ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

This study presents the application of low-cost dust monitors (LCDMs) for real-time monitoring of respirable dust in a mining environment. LCDMs significantly enhance data collection by providing continuous, granular and cost-effective dust concentration readings. This case study demonstrates that by deploying LCDMs, mining operators can respond quickly to changes in dust levels, improving occupational safety and air quality management. The results show how such monitoring technologies can be integrated into routine operations to reduce dust exposure and prevent health hazards such as silicosis, especially when coupled with appropriate mitigation strategies.

INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

The use of industrial wastes, such as quarry fines of crushed stone, should represent a basic component of sustainable development indicators. Therefore, increasing investments should be foreseen in techniques of treatment and recycling of residues in mining, as well as by-product attainment that generate jobs and income. The standards of identification and discarding of industrial wastes vary significantly between countries. However, practically all nations have started becoming more restrictive regarding environmental legislation, especially concerning production, transport, treatment, recycling and final discarding of industrial wastes. Under an environmental point of view, solid wastes produced by a system (such as a quarry) can be handled in two ways: a) they can be discarded in piles or b) they can be internally or externally recycled and reused. This second practice is translated to an additional economic consequence such as an increase of income as well as a decreased environmental impact. This option is more advanced and should be included in company policy. This paper presents cases where this practice is used, i.e. diminishing the environmental liabilities through the use of the quarry fines in the manufacture of industrial devices, incorporating such wastes in the productive chain, instead of storing them in piles.
