The acid leach-solvent extraction processing of oxide copper ores can be improved when selected cation additives are utilized. Bench scale testing showed improvements in both sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction processing. Treatment with the method to be described shows improvement in copper recovery in the acid leaching section as well as reduced acid consumption and reduced iron and aluminum dissolution. Processing the copper bearing leach solution with LIX-64N shows increased loading of the LIX reagent which relates to reduced aqueous and organic flow rates, reduced organic loss and inventory as well as a reduction in the size of mixer-settlers. The use of selected monovalent cations controls fluctuations within the pro- cessing system to accomplish the above named improvements. Additionally, these cations are totally compatible throughout the processing system and are quite inexpensive. Bench scale recycle data will be presented both for the leaching section and the continuous solvent extraction processing section up to (but not including) processing the loaded electrolyte. Material balances as well as major solution component monitoring will also be presented.

Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

"The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

Medusa Cement Company, a division of Medusa Corporation, is a medium-sized cement manufacturer serving the midwest, east, and southeast. Medusa's eight plants are located in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada. Of these, six have active limestone, shale, clay, and sand quarries now in operation. This paper deals with the various individual state laws regulating mining and reclamation at the Georgia, Illinois, and Pennsylvania quarries. Several recommendations for future state mining laws are discussed also.

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.

The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

Almost nine years after the assertion of enormous and pervasive federal control over coal mines by means of the Federal Coal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969, 30 USC Section 801 et seq, as amended by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (which basically increases the punitive powers of government) a brief assessment of some of the underlying causes, present status, and possible alternatives to governmental control is appropriate. In a governmental system based upon the principles of democracy and the protection of individual freedoms and constitutional rights the ultimate mechanism for abrogation of these rights is the creation and exploitation of fear. Machiavelli in rendering advice concerning the power over men provided by fear stated, "... it is much safer to be feared than loved .. fear preserves (the government) by a dread of punishment which never fails." The Prince. Within the context of the assumption of control by the government over industries or segments of our population - popular fear provides a convenient and almost necessary mechanism for the avoidance by law or regulation of democratic principles. The popular fear of coal mines has been successfully exploited by various goal oriented groups in the past and most recently by a Congressional constituency with a vested interest in controlling the mines through regulation.

Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion-resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

CYCLING WITH CEMENT "THE WHEEL IS COME FULL CIRCLE" Shakespeare's King Lear Act V, Scene 3, Line 176 The time clock of the cement industry has been turned back to the early 1950s. After the trials and tribulations of the decade of the Sixties, the hands now stand where they did just over twenty years ago. Cement shipments have steadily increased, with a record 419 million barrel level (78.8 million tons) being reached last year. Plants are operating at average utilization rates in excess of 85 percent of rated capacity. The spread between supply and demand has narrowed to where a definite shortage of cement now exists within the industry. The notable and unfortunate difference between the two periods however is that, back then, cement's returns were a respectable 14 to 18 percent, whereas today they stand at less than half those levels. Insufficient return forms the present foundation of the U.S. cement industry. This lack is destined to have a cumulative effect. Just as the industry's balance between supply and demand is returning to favorable proportions, promising a period that has historically and now should generate those profit levels required to modernize and provide for capacity addition, cement instead finds itself frozen by federal price controls into the semi-depressed condition that has existed for over a decade and from which it was just starting to emerge. Capital is not attracted to continued low returns, and increasingly restrictive pollution control measures are necessitating great non-productive expenditures be made as definite costs to stay in business. Even a clouded crystal ball would reveal that additional cement plant closings can be expected.

After the presentation of a co-authored paper, "The Cost of Transporting Ores and Raw Materials in World Markets", at the February SME meeting, one questioner commented, "You have been talking about the large shipper and ship loads. What does the small shipper do?" This paper will attempt to answer that question, at least in part. Probably the questioner hoped to hear about specific new tools and new techniques that he could apply. But one paper could only scratch the surface of the vast fund of information available; so rather than talk specifics we should take basics, that is, people, management and technology.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential for use of UAVs in underground mines and present a prototype design for a novel autorotating UAV platform for underground 3D data collection. The mining industry has recently shown increased interest in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist in everyday operations [20, 11, 4]. Above ground, small UAVs are in some cases a more efficient, inexpensive, and safer alternative to manned aircrafts currently used for photography, inspection and security [6, 10]. For example, attaching camera, infrared and LiDAR payloads, UAVs can provide a low-cost method of obtaining highly accurate 3D photogrammetric data and aerial photography. UAVs are now commonly used in open pit mining operations for applications that include stockpile surveying, 3D pit modelling, facilities management, accident reporting, progress monitoring, and environmental assessment [11]. There are numerous companies offering UAV services for mining applications; e.g., UAV Geomatics, Leica Geosystems, Sky Futures, SenseFly and FlyTerra, to name just a few. Common services include stockpile and open pit volume computations, environmental assessment, aerial mapping and photogrammetry. Although the aforementioned services are thosemost commonly provided by UAV surveying companies, they may also add value to other daily mining operations. For instance, SenseFly offers pre and post-blast monitoring in order to identify the presence of misfires and wall damage. This data can also be used to reconcile the blast results with expected results. GEM Systems offers a UAV equipped with a magnetometer for mineral exploration surveys. Companies such as Barrick have even used UAVs for solids modelling at tailings dams and stability monitoring [11]. UAVs in mining have so far been mostly limited to surface applications. Harsh underground environments pose many obstacles for flying UAVs. The confined space, dampness, reduced visibility, air movement, and lack of control signal propagation hinders most operators from being able to fly a drone underground. It may be that truly practical uses for UAVs underground will require either autonomous or semi-autonomous flight capabilities. Although there are many difficulties with flying underground, the potential benefits from a working system could greatly improve mining operations. The potential benefits of deploying UAV platforms underground include access to unreachable and dangerous locations and removing personnel from unsafe situations. These benefits have the potential to greatly improve mine monitoring and mine safety. Research has shown that current UAV technologies exist that allow for autonomous indoor flight. Extensive research has been done to develop UAV systems that are capable of performing on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which can allow them to navigate and map a foreign environment autonomously [5, 7, 1, 13]. Grzonka [7] successfully used an open hardware quadrotor to autonomously navigate and map an office building. The research outlines the localization, mapping, path planning, height estimation and control of the autonomous quadrotor. Other research has been done that exploits autonomous UAVs for search and rescue. Kassecker [9] proposed a software and hardware framework for a quadrotor capable of indoor and outdoor urban search and rescue and Rudol [19] developed a system for human body detection and geolocalization using an autonomous UAV.The use of autonomous UAVs in search and rescue has the potential to improve situational awareness and surveillance for a rescue team. Similar research has been done that uses autonomous UAVs for indoor exploration. Pravitra [15] outlined a strategy for autonomous exploration of miniature air vehicles (MAVs) within indoor environments and Rudol [19] developed a method for using an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a UAV for cooperative indoor exploration. The importance of grinding as a unit operation in all industry has caused much effort to be expended toward improving the facility with which grinding can be done. Endeavor has continued nearly 100 years to formulate laws governing crushing and grinding. This has not been without controversy. However, grinding is an experimental science and our useful knowledge originates in experience. The recorded experience is grinding history. Today, many types of size reduction equipment, each with variations, are available to industry. Frequently, more than one type of grinding equipment will meet a requirement of grinding. However, an economic evaluation of installation and operating costs generally indicates a preferred type. The selection of grinding equipment requires' a consideration of the purpose in grinding, the characteristics of the material to be ground, equipment available for grinding, and the manner in which it can be applied best.

With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

The operation of a modern coal preparation plant, particularly in western Canada, is a very complex task. Most western Canadian operations are processing two or more, sometimes up to ten, different seams through the same plant. This requires a sophisticated multi-circuit plant that needs close operational control. Add the soft nature and large amounts of natural fines of western Canadian coal and you have a formidable cleaning task. To assist in the operation, programmable controllers and sophisticated control concepts are being more widely used. Two of the newest coal preparation plants in Canada have been designed by Raymond Kaiser Engineers Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, Phillips Barratt Kaiser Engineering, Ltd. The use of programmable controllers and control systems will be illustrated by showing their application in a "typical" western Canadian coal plant. This example will cover flowsheet design, control concept systems application, and possible future uses.

To the safety engineer, mine planning engineer, and mine inspector associated with an underground operation, stability of the underground structure is of the utmost importance. In the United States in 1961 rock falls killed 167 miners, crippled many more, and cost the industry a fortune in lost equipment and production. Much research has been carried on to try to find ways to eliminate this loss of life and property. Within the past few years the interest in rock mechanics as a science has been at its highest point, Private industry, government agencies, universities and foundations have launched studies to gain a better basic understanding of the stability of underground openings.

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.
